Book Description

People thrive on conflict in most areas of their lives--football games, political debates, legal disputes--yet steer clear from workplace conflicts.

But conflict is actually a healthy way to challenge the existing order and essential to change in the workplace. The real problem is not conflict per se, but managing conflict.

This authoritative manual explains step by step how to design a complete conflict resolution system and develop the skills to implement it. Packed with exercises, case studies, and checklists, the book also supplies:

* an overview of workplace conflict * diagnostic tools for measuring it * techniques for resolving conflict, such as negotiation, labor/management partnerships, third-party dispute resolution, mediation, arbitration, more.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Resource.......2002-07-28

There are all sorts of opportunities for conflict in the work environment. Personal issues, varying perspectives, separate agendas, labor issues, and mental difficulties. When conflict escalates to violence-from shouting to shooting, it's time to start paying attention to the problem.

Marick Masters is the Executive Director of the Center on Conflict Resolution and Negotiation at the University of Pittsburgh. Robert Albright is also a professor in the field and both have done their share of corporate consulting. They obviously know their topic. The author suggest that conflict occupies thirty percent of a manager's time, so streamlining the process of dealing with conflict-and improving effectiveness-can be a significant value for an employer.

This book is worthwhile as a read-through and as a reference text. Executives, human resource professionals, consultants, and behavioral scientists working in the organizational arena will be delighted with the presentation of the material. It's surprisingly readable and, thanks to some good design, is easy on the eyes. Decent-sized type and open leading are a welcome benefit.

The book is organized into five parts. The first, appropriately, Getting a Handle on Workplace Conflict, has chapters on understanding, diagnosing, and dealing with conflict. The second section explores alternative resolution methods: negotiation, facilitation, mediation, arbitration, and potpourri. Lots of understandings here. Part 3, Special Topics, gets into Confronting Workplace Violence, EEO Disputes, Unions, and international issues. Part 4 takes the reader through the how-to of establishing an Integrated Conflict Resolution System, Education, and Training. The last section provides a brief map and guide, summarizing the essence of the book.

There are two appendices in this publication. The first gives the solutions to the twenty exercises in the chapters. The other offers a simulation of an EEO Mediation. The source list is a special treasure-a dozen pages of books, journals, web sites, and government publications to open more doors to learning for readers.

Everything you wanted to know in this field-if it's important in the workplace-is between the covers of this book. Certainly recommended for those responsible for keeping conflict at a minimum in any organization.

4 out of 5 stars Invaluable Reference Guide for Human Resources Personnel.......2005-07-30

Human Resource managers and specialists have a lot of legal material to learn. They have to keep up with the latest changes in the laws that affect the way they handle employees and the way they administer benefits. This guide, updated each year since its initial release, is designed to help human resource personnel find the answers to legal questions.

The most striking feature of this guide is its length. It is more than 1,100 pages long and contains 43 chapters. It needs to be this way, of course, to encompass all of the different laws pertaining to human resource management. It covers most everything about HR one can imagine, from rules and regulations regarding hiring and terminating to laws covering sexual harassment and pension administration.

Even though this book is a very good resource, there are still a few things you will not be able to find. The primary function of this reference guide is to provide an overview of the federal laws. Thus, many of the laws unique to the individual states are not discussed here. There are a few exceptions, but there are many state- specific questions this guide will not be able to answer. This is what happened to me one day when I consulted this book for an answer regarding workmen's compensation. It didn't have what I needed to know about my state, so I had to look elsewhere. Still, it pointed me in the right direction so it did have its use.

The organization of this book is ok, but some things about it are a little cumbersome. The table of contents, for example, doesn't include page numbers. Instead, it references the various pages based on the chapter number and the subsection (for example, "23.02" means turn to chapter 23, and then look for the second section). I think it would be better if it showed the page number.

There are plenty of references in this guide to specific court cases, pointing out new decisions and how they were decided. Human Resource laws change all the time, which is why a book like this becomes outdated quickly. Fortunately, the author of this handy guide updates it every year with a new release. It's a large, bulky book that may not be organized in the most efficient way, but is still invaluable as reference guide for HR personnel.

4 out of 5 stars Rabbi Trust.......2003-07-10

Your a teacher and don't know what a Rabbi Trust is? Shame on you. Look it up and learn it and stop thinking everyone is Anti-Semitic. As a Jewish man I take offense to your comment.

4 out of 5 stars Shilling's Text is Jam Packed.......1998-09-16

I am using this book for a master's level personnel law course. It covers all the topics quite thoroughly. It might be useful as a quick selective reference tool for HR administrators unfamiliar with one or more of the specialty areas. Some chapters (such as the one on benefits and the one on pensions) might benefit from another look at organization of the material. However, most of the information is accurate, if necessarily streamlined in many areas. Since personnel law now covers several deeply specialized areas, this is not surprising.

Stylistically, the book's sentences are jam-packed with information. This might prove difficult reading for some. In a few cases, a series of issues will be "hidden" by a single sentence that is oversimplified, but this is apparent only to a reader who is familiar with the field. The advantage is that the author has made a very creditable attempt to address all the issues. The author generally avoids drawing temporal or one-sided conclusions, which may mislead in a field that is fraught with disputes. I appreciate the even-handedness of this approach.

One small but annoying detail. On page 220 is a reference to a "rabbi trust". I took offense at the use of this term in the book, without quotation marks. I think later editions should avoid or explain the use of language which is apparently bigoted. In fact, I will recommend that my students not use this term because I can offer no good explanation for its continuance.

If you're in danger of losing your job, Richard C. Busse provides advice about how to turn things around and improve your relationships at work. If you do lose your job, he explains how to cope with termination, negotiate the best settlement and understand your rights. He answers many questions about U.S. employment laws and how they differ from state to state. We recommend this book to anyone who fears he or she may be "fired, laid-off or forced out" of a job, now or in the future. Managers, supervisors and human resource professionals will also find useful tips about legal issues and conducting performance evaluations properly, so they can avoid the risk of wrongful termination lawsuits.

I hadn't read it when my inccident happened but i called in my Union President, after paying for 4 years worth of dues they better do something. It said to do this in the book, so i was right on it. But, there is alot of other stuff in it, that is just good to know

5 out of 5 stars Anyone working should read this book.......2006-12-15

Regardless of your current employment status, one must read this book. It is excellent guide on what to do to protect one's best interests when it comes to salary negotiation for the new job, or severance negotiation when a job is lost. If you are in the rush and want to just skim the book read the tips at the end of the each chapter and that will have to determine if you need to read all of it or some of it. My advice however would be read the book cover to cover because you could only wish to have Richard Busse is your employment lawyer. If you are 40 or older you definitely want to read this book and better yet, keep it in your library for a refresher reads in the future.

                Book Description

This book provides readers with the first survey of social conditions since the opening of the borders between China and mainland Southeast Asia in the early 1990s, which saw radical changes in the economic policies of the various states involved, in particular, China, Vietnam, and Laos. Each chapter provides a close-up survey of a particular area and problem, but cumulatively they provide an invaluable general picture of social and cultural change in the border regions where China meets Southeast Asia.

                Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Vital Book on a Vital Region.......2001-06-04

The border regions of China, Burma, Vietnam, Laos and Thailand are hotbeds of trade, migration, and smuggling. Opium and heroin, rubies and jade, endangered species, cars and women follow ancient trails across modern borders. The recent openning of borders has increased economic opportunity, but also spread drugs and AIDS. This book confronts these issues with a sophistication rarely found in similar collections. Most of the contributers are anthropologists with long research experience on the ground -- not economists who never leave the capital. There are many valuable chapters; to cite a few: David Feingold's witty exploration of the relationship of opium production to the trafficking of hill tribe girls, Andrew Walker's discussion of trading in Laos, Jean Berle on the role of Chinese Moslem traders, a Chinese biologists analysis of 'ecology without borders' and the animal trade, and Evans' useful introduction. This book is essential for both scholars and development experts (who may need a re-think), and will be re-read for its theoretical insights long after the particularities become dated. It also places current issues in historical context. A paperback would be welcome.

                Book Description

Spring, 1864 . . . the Civil War's two greatest generals face each other in the field of battle. Ulysses S. Grant spurs his Army of the Potomac across the Rapidan River as part of a grand offensive plan designed to crush the Confederacy in a single blow. Awaiting Grant and his Federals is the Army of Northern Virginia under the command of Robert E. Lee who, for two years, has repelled every Union attempt to penetrate south of the Rapidan. Again, Lee foils Federal intentions, swiftly striking Grant's army as it struggles through the tangled darkness of Virginia's most impenetrable forest, known as the Wilderness. With dogged determination uncommon to Federal armies fighting in the East, Grant turns to face off with Lee. For two days the great armies wrestle amid the nightmare landscape that would give this bloody battle its name. Book Description

1928. Woodward takes the reader on a journey through the life of Ulysses S. Grant. Beginning with a sketch of his parents, we travel through Ulysses' falling in love, being a pacifist, becoming a general of the army, his battles in the war between the North and South, his meeting General Lee, the fall of the Confederacy, becoming President, through his death. An accurate and enthralling tale of this American hero. Illustrated.

The entire book is really a slam against General Grant. Writing in 1928, Woodward is one the many historians who favored succession and slavery. The whole point of "Meet General Grant" is to show how imcompetent and stupid he is.

What else can you expect from the man who wrote in "A New American History" that "The slave system did incalculable harm to the white people of the South, and benefited nobody but the negro, in that it served as a vast training school for African savages. Though the regime of the slave plantations was strict, it was, on the whole, a kindly one by comparison with what the imported slave had experienced in his own land. It taught him discipline, cleanliness and a conception of moral standards."

For a good and accurate account of General Grant, try Jean Edward Smith's "Grant."

1 out of 5 stars The worst book ever written on Ulysses Grant.......2004-02-19

Run, do not walk, away from this book. A massive joke in the Grant community, no one with a shred of common sense or historical sensibility would endorse this dreadful biography. The author, William E. Woodward, was an avowed racist, who openly states in the book that "slavery was a good thing." He understood next to nothing about his subject and when in doubt, simply makes up entire incidents to suit his warped fantasies. Grant had a famously happy and passionate marriage. This doesn't fit into Woodward's scheme of things, so the hapless cretin claimed Grant was "incapable of love or devotion." Had Woodward bothered to read Grant's many love letters to his wife, he wouldn't have written such inanity.

It would be impossible to count the errors in this masterpiece of banality, they appear on nearly every page, ultimately rendering the book a hideous malady. It was written 70 years ago, it is beyond out-dated, it is a pitiful, pathetic and truly wretched book. It's only usefulness might be to stoke the fire in your hearth. The apex of awful, that is "Meet General Grant."

While looking through the stacks of a bookstore at a local flea market, I found a hardback copy of Woodward's "Meet General Grant". Figured any old book was worth $4, so I added it to my collection. I found this book extremely educating and quite interesting. Even though I am a "distant relative by marriage" of Grant, I didn't really know much about him. Visited his birthplace, childhood home, etc. which is right across the Ohio River from where I live in Northern Kentucky - but, well - he's just not a man that I had read a lot about.

Woodward gave me not only an excellent sketch of Grant, but of the social events and mores of the time. In short, I learned a LOT about the man and his times. Some of the language (e.g. his somewhat antiquated viewpoint of African Americans) seems dated, but hey, the book was first published in 1946.

I liked it. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn the true "genius" of the lesser revered general of the "War of Northern Aggression".
