Democracy and the Rule of Law in Classical Athens: Essays on Law, Society, and Politics
Edward M. Harris Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 052185279X |
Book Description
This volume brings together essays on Athenian law by Edward M. Harris, who challenges much of the recent scholarship on this topic. Presenting a balanced analysis of the legal system in ancient Athens, Harris stresses the importance of substantive issues and their contribution to our understanding of different types of legal procedures. He combines careful philological analysis with close attention to the political and social contexts of individual statutes. Collectively, the essays in this volume demonstrate the relationship between law and politics, the nature of the economy, the position of women, and the role of the legal system in Athenian society. They also show that the Athenians were more sophisticated in their approach to legal issues than has been assumed in the modern scholarship on this topic.

Rules and Networks: The Legal Culture of Global Business Transactions (Onati International Series in Law and Society)
Manufacturer: Hart Pub ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 1841132969 |
Book Description
International business transactions are heavily influenced by culture, practice and rule. The pursuit of business relationships within nation-states can be subject to differences in the generation of norms and the processing of disputes, but these conflicts are magnified many times over in cross-border transactions where nation-state control and support is weak or absent. This book seeks different explanations of the ways in which business people and their legal advisers try to minimise the effect of these magnified difficulties. Since most explanations are dominated by North American and European legal scholarship and practice, a concern of this book is to open up the discussion to competing explanatory frameworks. Specifically, it develops the notion that global legal convergence may not be the immediate, inevitable result of increased global economic interaction. Rather, less formal mechanisms for achieving normative understanding and predictability in bu! siness dealings may also flourish.

Deadly Force, Colonialism, and the Rule of Law: Police Violence in Guyana (Contributions in Comparative Colonial Studies)
Joan R. Mars Manufacturer: Greenwood Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0313311048 |
Book Description
In post-colonial countries such as Guyana, the legacy of colonialism and its influence on policing and society is of crucial significance in developing an explanation for police violence and police-caused homicide. Mars applies a contextual approach, grounded in the conflict theoretical perspective, to explain and understand variations in police violence over time, and she extends her study to include the social, political, and legal structure in which such actions are embedded. Her findings support the notion that police violence is a function of decades of coercive state rule under British colonialism, as well as the state's legitimization of violence in police work. In this first study on police violence and homicide in Guyana, Mars presents and analyzes data covering a 14-year period. She also provides comparative and descriptive information on the use of excessive and deadly force by the police, and, in addition, discusses laws relating to such incidents. Mars finds little support for the community violence hypothesis in reference to Guyana and concludes instead that the level of violence in the community and the everyday dangers of police work does not significantly influence the rates of police-caused homicide in that country.

Legal Rules and International Society
Anthony Clark Arend Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0195127110 |
Book Description
This book provides an interdisciplinary examination of international law by addressing four critical questions: How are international legal rules distinctive? How does an investigator determine the existence of a rule of international law? Does international law really matter in international politics? and What effect could the changing nature of international relations have on international law? Using Constructivist theory, Arend argues that international law can alter the identity of states, and, consequently, have a profound impact on state behavior.

The Rule of Law: Nomos XXXVI (American Society of Political and Legal Philosophy)
Ian Shapiro Manufacturer: NYU Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items: ASIN: 0814780245 Release Date: 1995-07-01 |
Book Description
From the sprawling remnants of the Soviet empire to the southern tip of Africa, attempts are underway to replace arbitrary political regimes with governments constrained by the rule of law. This ideal which subordinates the wills of individuals, social movements--and even, sometimes, democratically elected majorities--to the requirements of law, is here explored by leading legal and political thinkers.
Part I of The Rule of Law examines the interplay of democracy and the rule of law, while Part II focusses on the centuries-old debate about the meaning of the rule of law itself. Part III takes up the constraints that rationality exercises on the rule of law. If the rule of law is desirable partly because it is rational, then departures from that rule might also be desirable in the event that they can be shown to be rational. Part IV concentrates on the limits of the rule of law, considering the tensions between liberalism and the rule of law which exist despite the fact that reasoned commitment to the rule of the law is preeminently a liberal commitment.

How to blend project management into a business model.......2006-04-13
Broad Industry Project Management.......2004-03-10
I have had the privilege of attending a course by Dennis Comninos, and I have seen the practical wisdom in the authors' approach. After starting to read the book, I find that wisdom repeated.
Frigenti and Comninos bring their experience to bear in this book, in which they discuss an organisation-wide application of project management principles. The case studies in the book will at times seem autobiographical to anyone involved in project management, especially in organisations with limited project management maturity.
A simplistic approach to project management (one which the book avoids) involves transferring techniques from construction projects to softer areas such as IT and expecting the process to work.
From page 129: Because of its strong focus on results or objectives, ODPM [Objective Directed Project Management] can be and is being effectively used to plan and manage 'fuzzy' projects that do not respond well to the more scientific project management tools, techniques and processes. Such 'fuzzy' projects commonly exist in business, information technology, human resources and culture change or transformation projects.
I strongly recommend this book. Even the case studies will alert you to possible unforseen problems when you are planning a project.
