    Book Description

In recent years, stories of reckless lawyers and greedy citizens have given the legal system, and victims in general, a bad name. Many Americans have come to believe that we live in the land of the litigious, where frivolous lawsuits and absurdly high settlements reign.

Scholars have argued for years that this common view of the depraved ruin of our civil legal system is a myth, but their research and statistics rarely make the news. William Haltom and Michael McCann here persuasively show how popularized distorted understandings of tort litigation (or tort tales) have been perpetuated by the mass media and reform proponents. Distorting the Law lays bare how media coverage has sensationalized lawsuits and sympathetically portrayed corporate interests, supporting big business and reinforcing negative stereotypes of law practices.

Based on extensive interviews, nearly two decades of newspaper coverage, and in-depth studies of the McDonald's coffee case and tobacco litigation, Distorting the Law offers a compelling analysis of the presumed litigation crisis, the campaign for tort law reform, and the crucial role the media play in this process.

    3 out of 5 stars Objection Sustained!.......2007-05-21

After having read Stephanie Mencimer's "Blocking the Courthouse Door" I became more interested in the arguments against "tort reform." However, this book did little to enhance that interest.

In defense of the authors, Haltom and McCann, they have presented a thorough discussion of the topic as it relates to politics, media and the litigation crisis, just as the subtitle says. There are chapters for pro-business tort reformers, plaintiffs and sociological scholars opposed to it, newspaper reporting and information selection, the story of "the McDonalds Hot Coffee Lady," tobacco litigation, and a final chapter, which I confess, I had no idea what they were talking about, mainly because I had lost interest. Their analyses are so in depth that they would probably even have John Stossel scratching his head.

My hypnotic trance was due to the academic presentation of information. In fact it was so dry, it almost gave me the Heaves. I object to this for the person who wants to learn AND be entertained. The objection is overruled for the reader who wishes to pursue serious academic study of the tort misinformation from different directions. For the latter, it is at least four stars. Either one will be better informed, and may God have mercy on your soul!

For me, it was a solid three, only because I wanted to find the information interesting.

      Book Description

This volume brings together essays on Athenian law by Edward M. Harris, who challenges much of the recent scholarship on this topic. Presenting a balanced analysis of the legal system in ancient Athens, Harris stresses the importance of substantive issues and their contribution to our understanding of different types of legal procedures. He combines careful philological analysis with close attention to the political and social contexts of individual statutes. Collectively, the essays in this volume demonstrate the relationship between law and politics, the nature of the economy, the position of women, and the role of the legal system in Athenian society. They also show that the Athenians were more sophisticated in their approach to legal issues than has been assumed in the modern scholarship on this topic.

        Book Description

International business transactions are heavily influenced by culture, practice and rule. The pursuit of business relationships within nation-states can be subject to differences in the generation of norms and the processing of disputes, but these conflicts are magnified many times over in cross-border transactions where nation-state control and support is weak or absent. This book seeks different explanations of the ways in which business people and their legal advisers try to minimise the effect of these magnified difficulties. Since most explanations are dominated by North American and European legal scholarship and practice, a concern of this book is to open up the discussion to competing explanatory frameworks. Specifically, it develops the notion that global legal convergence may not be the immediate, inevitable result of increased global economic interaction. Rather, less formal mechanisms for achieving normative understanding and predictability in bu! siness dealings may also flourish.

          Book Description

In post-colonial countries such as Guyana, the legacy of colonialism and its influence on policing and society is of crucial significance in developing an explanation for police violence and police-caused homicide. Mars applies a contextual approach, grounded in the conflict theoretical perspective, to explain and understand variations in police violence over time, and she extends her study to include the social, political, and legal structure in which such actions are embedded. Her findings support the notion that police violence is a function of decades of coercive state rule under British colonialism, as well as the state's legitimization of violence in police work. In this first study on police violence and homicide in Guyana, Mars presents and analyzes data covering a 14-year period. She also provides comparative and descriptive information on the use of excessive and deadly force by the police, and, in addition, discusses laws relating to such incidents. Mars finds little support for the community violence hypothesis in reference to Guyana and concludes instead that the level of violence in the community and the everyday dangers of police work does not significantly influence the rates of police-caused homicide in that country.

              Book Description

This book provides an interdisciplinary examination of international law by addressing four critical questions: How are international legal rules distinctive? How does an investigator determine the existence of a rule of international law? Does international law really matter in international politics? and What effect could the changing nature of international relations have on international law? Using Constructivist theory, Arend argues that international law can alter the identity of states, and, consequently, have a profound impact on state behavior.

                    Book Description

From the sprawling remnants of the Soviet empire to the southern tip of Africa, attempts are underway to replace arbitrary political regimes with governments constrained by the rule of law. This ideal which subordinates the wills of individuals, social movements--and even, sometimes, democratically elected majorities--to the requirements of law, is here explored by leading legal and political thinkers.

Part I of The Rule of Law examines the interplay of democracy and the rule of law, while Part II focusses on the centuries-old debate about the meaning of the rule of law itself. Part III takes up the constraints that rationality exercises on the rule of law. If the rule of law is desirable partly because it is rational, then departures from that rule might also be desirable in the event that they can be shown to be rational. Part IV concentrates on the limits of the rule of law, considering the tensions between liberalism and the rule of law which exist despite the fact that reasoned commitment to the rule of the law is preeminently a liberal commitment.

                      Book Description

An examination of women's roles in poltics and society in the contemporary Russian Federation as it creates a new market economy and democratic course born of a millennium of history and nearly 75 years of authoritarian communist rule. The stage is set in the introduction followed by an examination of the history of the Bolshevik socialist state in 1917 through the participation of women in recent multiparty elections in 1993. The tsarist and Communist gender culture is presented, and the book then considers why and how, the Soviet Union disintegrated. Next the editors explore the reborn Russia of President Boris Yeltsin and women's rights under Soviet and post-Soviet rule. The book is enriched by statistical tables and glossaries of the names of leaders and terms for easy identification.

Enzo Frigenti and Dennis Comninos' THE PRACTICE OF PROJECT MANAGEMENT: A GUIDE TO THE BUSINESS-FOCUSED APPROACH illustrates just why a different project management approach is needed to blend project management into part of the business. From helping organizations make changes to blending project management into a broader business perspective, this isn't your usual project management guide, but more a bible on how to blend project management objectives into overall business structures for added effectiveness. From project organization to workshop models and results, THE PRACTICE OF PROJECT MANAGEMENT will also make a fine classroom text for business courses.

5 out of 5 stars Broad Industry Project Management.......2004-03-10

Enzo Frigenti and Dennis Comninos have consulted to industry before writing this book. They have extensive practical experience, and they command wide respect. They have managed a large range of project types, including ones as soft as social change in third world countries.

I have had the privilege of attending a course by Dennis Comninos, and I have seen the practical wisdom in the authors' approach. After starting to read the book, I find that wisdom repeated.

Frigenti and Comninos bring their experience to bear in this book, in which they discuss an organisation-wide application of project management principles. The case studies in the book will at times seem autobiographical to anyone involved in project management, especially in organisations with limited project management maturity.

A simplistic approach to project management (one which the book avoids) involves transferring techniques from construction projects to softer areas such as IT and expecting the process to work.

From page 129: Because of its strong focus on results or objectives, ODPM [Objective Directed Project Management] can be and is being effectively used to plan and manage 'fuzzy' projects that do not respond well to the more scientific project management tools, techniques and processes. Such 'fuzzy' projects commonly exist in business, information technology, human resources and culture change or transformation projects.

I strongly recommend this book. Even the case studies will alert you to possible unforseen problems when you are planning a project.

5 out of 5 stars Great Learning Tool.......2007-09-25

It's all fun and games with Alphabet Puppets. My three year old & I have taken on a new letter every two weeks and are really having fun at it. During the week while she's playing around the house, she sings the songs from the book to herself. And she's learning letter names and sounds! We love it!

I found this book in the library and checked it out several times. I loved it and used a lot of the ideas out of it. I decided to start a preschool and went to purchase the book only to find it was out of print! I looked for it everywhere and couldn't find it...even on EBay! But I finally found it on Amazon.com and I'm thrilled! It's a great book and I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Way to Teach the ABC's.......2002-07-23

I first saw this book in the library about 10 years ago and then decided to buy it after I had my 4th daughter. It is an economical program to use to teach your child their alphabet. You can make the puppets out of material or use paper lunch sacks which is what I use. One of the games for the letter C is a variation of "Mother, May I?" in which Ms. Coudron makes it "Captain, May I?" My four-year-old likes the cooking activities the best. For the letter C we make carrot curls and hot cocoa. Very simple inexpensive cooking recipes. For B we made butter which my daughter thought was lots of fun. This book is great if you only have time for 1 or 2 letters per week.
