Put your dinero where your boca is..........2003-10-07

The reader from Atlanta really trashes this dictionary and takes care to provide some examples of the flaws discovered. I was surprised, because it was recommended to me by an official translator in Madrid and I was considering purchasing it. Given that the Atlanta reader doesn't like the Rutledge dictionary, I'd really appreciate his/her recommendation of a better dictionary to serve as reference for business translations, especially in the investment field. Thank you.

Many, many errors.......1999-11-23

There are literally dozens of errors in this dictionary. "Banner year" is translated literally as "año insignia," which is nonsense in Spanish. "Mover and shaker" is also translated literally ("promotor e impulsor"). It's as though the author didn't understand English! Other absurdities are "herein" (aquí dentro--should be "en el presente"), hereunder (más abajo--should be "conforme al presente"), etc. Again, these are literal translations that do not fit in business or legal writing. "Judicial notice" which is actually "reconocimiento de hechos notorios" is translated as citación judicial--again, complete lack of understanding of the term. I'd stay away from this one like the plague.

Best Spanish Commercial Dictionary.......1999-09-02

As a translator who specializes in financial and commerical texts, I can honestly say that the Routledge is the most complete dictionary I have found on the subject. There is nothing that compares to it.

A wealth of information.......2001-06-02

I bought this one in 1998 at a bookshop at Harvard square.I have most of my work in economic and financial administration though I don't have a formal degree in economics.I have found this dictionary as a sound starting point to quickly get an idea about an economic concept especially from an applied and interdiciplinary perspective. The definitions and explanations for the entries are quite clear and crisp.The references at the end of a term are very relevant and particularly useful for research purpose. Cross referencing also comes very handy in completing the gaps in a given concept. Some of the common economic terms( e.g.Recession ) could be accorded a more exhaustive treatment.More terms from Development Economics could perhaps merit inclusion.I also feel that a new edition of this fine dictionary should now be overdue especially as the new economy came and went away(!)in the meantime with so many of its terms crying for inclusion in such a tome.

For my purposes, I found this book to be very inadequate, if not inutile. I have a workable knowledge of the Italian language in both a conversational and written (in terms of journalism and literature) sense, but my business vocabulary is seriously lacking. Hence,I thought it prudent to purchase this book to help me with a project I am doing at work for which I must read Italian financial and insurance company and related informational websites to write a report on e-commerce in the Italian finance/insurance market. As in English, there are many every-day words in Italian that when put in a business context take on a different meaning. This book did not contain any of these words for which I needed definitions. In fact, what is included in this book are the larger words for which most people wouldn't require a glossary, because the words resemble their English counterparts. Another thing that this book seriously lacked was a glossary for acronyms and abbreviations, which as any businessman knows, are bandied about in the business world like take-out menus in a New York apartment building. You won't even find the English or Italian translation for S.p.A....not even under societa. I recommend looking elsewhere for your business Italian language needs.

A Dictionary Should Not be Biased!!!.......2000-10-05

The hallmark of a good dictionary is fairness to all schools of economics, but the editor, Robert Beynon, lives up to his profession of "yellow" journalism. Imagine a dictionary on "globalization"--the end of communist command economies, global free markets and entrepreneurship, the dynamic financial markets, currency crises, etc.--and the editor has NO entries for Milton Friedman and the Chicago school!!! The Routledge dictionary has separate entries on Keynes, Marx, Solow, Galbraith, Malthus, Marshall, Mill, Say, Smith, Pigou, Schumpeter, Hicks, Modigliani, and Ricardo, but no entries on Friedman, Stigler, Fisher, Mises or Hayek. The latter two deserve special mention because they were the principal economists to predict globalization and the collapse of Soviet central planning! The book doesn't even have an entry on Paul A. Samuelson. Go figure.

A poignant summary of modern economics.......1999-05-16

This book is a must read for students of economics, policymakers and business people alike. The essay contributions cover a host of interesting topics in economics not to mention an impressive list of contributors. I especially enjoyed the piece by Paul Ormerod on What Economics is Not. The papers summarize the economic topics in a very reader friendly format as well as raising some interesting questions for the future of economics. The A-Z entries are a useful guide for readers with a less formal background in economics

This is the same as other self help books: encouraging, but it has one message that continually stands out in the book: you need to have ambition and a plan. A good guide for someone in their early 20s or late teens. Similar books I would recommend, how to be twice as smart (old book but good advice) and how to win friends and influence people by dale carnegie....

Simply Incredible!!! It's no wonder this book recently hit the NEW YORK TIME's BESTSELLER LIST!!!

This book is the first book I've ever seen and read that actually speaks to people's real world issues and challenges. There is no fluff here, unlike many books on success. It provides practical solutions and strategies on how to acheive meaningful success at an early age and is a must read for anyone in their late teens to early 30s!

The few people below who didn't give it an outstanding rating must have either read a totally different book, didn't actually read it at all, or work for a competitor's book!!! Buy this book today and you won't be sorry. No question about it!

I don't really recommend this book. I would say that the 1 star guy above put it pretty well. It doesn't contain insight beyond what the average person already knows (like most books in this category... written down common sense).

It is encouraging, the authors are enthusiastic, that's for sure. Unfortunately their biggest success appears to be the marketing of a book on achieving success.
