Book Description
Selecting Business Partners for Success contains fourteen chapters on how you can qualify a potential business partner for compatibility with your style and the way you like to conduct business. Such topics as personality profiles, financial/lifestyle profiles, business philosphy/ethics, management styles, talent contribution/titles, work ethic, personal vs. corporate goals, conflict resolution, relatives as partners, and buy an sell agreements, can all contribute to either success or failure in a business partnership. If an entrepreneur is thinking of having one or more partners in a business endeavor, they will save themselves untold grief, and undoubedly monies, by following the qualifying process contained in this book. Even if you THINK you know your potential partner(s) well, you owe it to both yourself and the potential partner(s) to ask some hard questions. The author has received countless testimonials from people who, thankfully, did not enter into a partnership after reading this book. Those who did, did so with their eyes wide open and with a basic understanding of many important issues that were sure to arise in the course of doing business in a partnership. Protect yourself! The dissolution of a business partnership can be every bit as painful and costly as a divorce.

From the supplier: The process of auditing the tax return of a partnership is difficult because individual partners, not the partnership, pay income taxes. Partnerships must select a competent tax matters partner (TMP) to represent the partnership during an audit. A TMP must be a US citizen or resident and must have been a general partner during the tax year. A TMP may begin an investigation of tax liability by filing the Administrative Adjustment Request.

Free yourself from the limiting belief that you cant draw and move into the dynamic world of visible thinking for you and your students. The authors have compiled a symbolary of easy- to-draw iconographs that can be used to enrich communica- tion, provoke deeper thought, and make the process of creating Mind Maps and Mindscapes for note taking and review in your classroom a breeze. Visual Thinking breaks down the process of drawing into small steps so that anyone who thinks they cannot draw will find that in fact, they can. Visible thinking templates help students work through challenging problem-solving activities. As their thinking processes are recorded, students become more thorough and skillful in reaching conclusions and making decisions.
Customer Reviews:
A Book for Teachers and Students!.......2005-10-12
Visual Thinking is a book made for teachers who want to help their students use images and words to record ideas in a creative and memorable way. That is why I, as a middle school teacher, find it so appealing. The "symbolary" gives you hundreds of easy to draw images and there are many templates, too, that encourage visual thinking -- that is using visual metaphors to think through challenges, make plans and more. I think you will find many uses for this book! I certainly did.
Excellent resource.......2005-10-06
In this excellent new handbook on mind-mapping as an instructional tool, the authors include how to create mindscapes, easy ways to learn drawing skills, how to create and use symbols, and how to create mindscape templates for developing higher order thinking skills, problem-solving, studying, and goal-setting. Even those who believe they have never been able to draw, will find it easy to develop this skill. Included in this useful book is a "symbolary" of easy-to-draw iconographs that can be used to enrich communication and facilitate the understanding and learning of almost any subject. What a fine tool to have on hand for both teachers and students.
Educators: Take a look!.......2005-09-24
"I was brought up believing that "I cant draw" and I was hesitant to get this book, but I am so glad that I did! Reading and practicing with "Visual Thinking," I began to feel more confident in my ability to teach others using "pictures" that are worth more than a thousand words! There are so many students these days who have difficulties with language and comprehension when only the written word is used, but who are able to comprehend and express themselves very clearly and in detail when using symbols. So many wonderful templates are provided in the book that students and teachers can use to teach, learn, record information and review. Mapping with symbols as suggested in this book allows us to see connections that we might otherwise overlook. It is a fun text, easy to use and well done in every way! Thanks to the authors!"

Quite disappointed by this new book & with the two authors!.......2005-09-14
I am quite disappointed by this new book & with the two authors, whose past work I am most familiar with. Having read (& reviewed with gusto!) the principal author's two earlier pieces of work i.e. Mapping InnerSpace, I find this book to be somewhat of a letdown.
It is natural that I would compare this book with `Mapping InnerSpace.' Much of the material in the new book has apparently been rehashed from the earlier work. The only new stuff I can find is the `symbolary' of easy-to-draw iconographs, which is now been re-organized from A to Z, & a handful of new `Mindscaping' application templates in the last chapter. That's it.
Surprisingly, the authors even continue to make use of the same Foreword, which goes back to the late 80's & which appeared in the first book.
I get this funny feeling that the new book has been based on perfunctory desk research & no attempt has been exerted to conduct some real field research to cover new developments or advancements. Worst of all, & sad to say, the material is still restricted to the authors' own limited field of work.
Based on my own exploration, the field of visual thinking has obviously made tremendous progress in the last few years, in both the educational & business arenas. A quick search & browse across the net will give readers a good appreciation of what has happened/is happening out there.
I actually expect the authors to provide a quick round-up (or snapshot) of developments & happenings with regard to new & exciting visual thinking applications across the educational as well as business realms. There have been abundant application variations as well as radical enhancements in the field of visual thinking for business professionals. I am well aware that field research is no easy task in the light of many proprietary methods, but with a little ingenuity & persistent legwork, it would have been rewarding for both authors to go the extra mile. The new book, taking into consideration the prevailing developments outside their own sphere, would have been great for all the readers, especially the professionals.
For examples, the creative work of heavy weights in the field of visual thinking as applied to business & industry, like Jim Channon (large system imagineering with Advanced Visual Language), David Sibbet (graphical visualisation of organisational change with template-based methodology) & Matt Taylor (creative augmentation, with artful integration of visual space technologies, collaborative environments, & knowledge-intensive work processes), to name a few, have not been captured &/or exemplified. Not even in the Resources page. I am also very intrigued as to why the innovative work of Christine Allen Ewy (Teaching with Visual Frameworks) & Elizabeth H Wig (Map It Out: Visual Tools for Thinking, Organizing & Communicating) is not even captured in the Resources. There are many others.
In today's technology-savvy world, there is no mention of using technology to augment one's visual thinking approach. The Mind-manager software quickly comes to mind. Xplanations is another innovative one. There are many others, too.
In these respects, the book does not stand up to its title, Visual Thinking: Tools for Mapping Your Ideas.
For the beginner, particularly a teacher or a parent or a student, who is currently looking for plain visual thinking approaches, this book still stands as great work. I would attribute this to the wonderful symbolary.
To sum up my review, I reluctantly rate this book a 3 in the light of my foregoing comments, although it deserves a 5 in terms of useful & practical learning for the beginner in the field of visual thinking.

Book Description
Two important scheduling techniques for modern construction managementâthe precedence technique and the arrow techniqueâare developed and analyzed. The parallel treatment of these two applications presents a basis of theory and practice for the civil engineering student and the practicing project manager. Introduces the concept of the scheduling plan as a design process. Shows the steps for developing the list of activities as the basis for any networking technique. Gives computations for arrow and precedence diagrams. Covers practical techniques for making time-cost adjustments to early start schedules. Concludes with discussion of applications of techniques in the context of real-life projects.
Customer Reviews:
One of the best construction scheduling books in term of quantitative analysis.......2007-01-06
This book is one of the best construction scheduling books in term of quantitative analysis. The book does a good job on explaining the fundamental concepts of construction scheduling and further the concept to calculation part. Every concept is presented with examples and solutions, which are very useful. The contents of the book are:
1. Introduction. This chapter gives readers background in general about construction scheduling (such as resources, network, bar chart, and schedule).
2. Project Breakdown. This chapter is about deciding, preparing and organizing information (such as level of detail, activity data and constraints).
3. Basic Arrow Diagramming (or Activity On Arrow, AOA). This chapter is all about how to construct an arrow network (activities are represented by arrow shapes). If you don't plan to do manual calculation, he might want to skip this chapter. Moreover, commercial software these days does not use arrow diagram (AOA) anymore. However, redundant link, dummy activity (which is very tricky for AOA) and how/when to use dummy activity are well explained in this chapter.
4. Basic Precedence Diagram (or Activity On Node, AON). This chapter presents how to construct Precedence Diagram (AON) and show step-by-step how to eliminate redundant link.
5. Establish Activity Durations. This chapter is 5 pages long. However, I never read it. :P
6. Scheduling Computations for Arrow Networks (AOA) and 7. for Precedence Networks (AON). These chapters focus on the calculation of both types of the networks. The author shows how to use network diagrams (drawings) and how to use table (like spreadsheet but manually calculate) to calculate activity properties (such as early start date and floats). Formula for the calculation is well explained along with many examples. In both chapters, four types of floats and their formula are presented according to the type of the network (AOA and AON). In addition, the concept of using matrix (another kind of table) to update total float (TF) and free float (FF) is presented in the chapter 7. This matrix becomes handy when manual calculations of updating TF and FF are required. (You better get familiar with this matrix if you want to study one of the unlimited resource leveling concepts called Minimum Moment Method, explained later in chapter 11)
8. Communication the Schedule. This one is more like "How GUI of scheduling software (such as report format and bar chart) looks like 30 years ago". Surprisingly, nothing has changed much from today software. What a shame.
9. Project Control. This chapter discusses level of control, setting target scheduling, monitoring project, evaluating and forecasting project, control period, and updating project progress. This chapter shows you what can be done in term of project management and scheduling according to the knowledge discussed in previous 8 chapters. Moreover, it also guides readers to a new topic, Time-Cost Tradeoff.
10. Time-Cost Adjustments. This chapter presents the concept and the calculation of time-cost tradeoff analysis during pre-construction phase. The idea of varying crew sizes associated with their direct costs is discussed. A good example is used to demonstrate the idea and also the application of Fondahl's technique. Besides the concept of time-cost tradeoff which is well explained, I am not a big fan of Fondahl's technique because it is very tedious, error prone, and not guarantee an optimal solution. I suggest you to read the concept and try to use EXCEL to optimizing a time-cost tradeoff problem. Moreover, the author does not discuss cash flow analysis.
11. Resource Leveling. This is one of my favorite chapters since I am so into "resource leveling". This chapter discusses two different types of resource leveling which are Limited Resource Allocation and Unlimited Resource Leveling. For limited resource allocation, a traditional method (very simple and used in most commercial software) is explained. For unlimited resource leveling, the author uses an example to show how to level (reducing the fluctuation in resource required per day) unlimited resource by using Minimum Moment Method (MOM). Later, he furthers the leveling concept of single resource to multiple resources, and also demonstrates how to schedule activity so that the schedule will accommodate resource constraints. In brief, the author did a good job in this chapter compared to those in other scheduling books. Since this book was written in the early stage of construction engineering and management, the concept of leveling resources for multiple projects and the idea of leveling resource and still maximize resource learning curve are not discussed. In addition, later the author developed a new unlimited resource leveling called PACK which is more effective and less computational effort than MOM. Unfortunately, PACK method is not presented in the book. Last word about this chapter, MOM and PACK are most likely to outperform those resource leveling features some commercial software.
12. Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT). PERT is a probabilistic scheduling method that calculates chance of finishing project within a particular period. This book as well as many other books probably say the same thing and show how the calculation of PERT. So, nothing is special. However, I would like tell you that these days we use simulation to get the same information from PERT with less pain. However, if you are old school, please read a method called Probabilistic Network Evaluation Technique (PNET). PERT only considers the longest path while PNET considers the longest path and other high independent paths with high variation in duration. Since variation exists in activity duration, the longest path may not always the critical path (hmm this sounds confusing).
13. Overlapping Network. From chapter 1 to 12, activity dependency is only described as finish-to-start relationship. This chapter introduces new types of activity constraint: start-to-start, start-to-finish, finish-to-finish. Formula and an example (which is enough) are used to explain the idea of overlapping network.
14. Selected Application. I never read this chapter since it is 30 years old.
The only major thing that is missing from this book is a scheduling concept of linear scheduling. Since this book was published when construction was not interested or not really appreciated the idea of maintaining resource utilization, eliminating resource idle time, the concept of scheduling linear project or repetitive project (such as high-rise buildings and highway projects) were not presented. Besides that, this book is an excellent book with cost of $60.
Ultimate Textbook for Construction Scheduling.......2003-02-16
This is one of the best, perhaps the best, construction scheduling books available in the market. The book contains all important contents in this issue. The book is very easy to understand, therefore ones without knowledge in scheduling can understand readily. Moreover, it contains several advanced topics in scheduling, including PERT, overlapping networks, and time-cost tradeoff. The author, Robert Harris, is a well-known pioneer in this field and has been a professor teaching scheduling classes at the University of Michigan for many decades. I strongly recommend this book for everyone who wants to own an excellent scheduling book.

First Time user- primarily for Queuing theory.......2002-03-01
I find the book to be very well written and the programs easy to use. The setup screens are very intuitive and the solutions quite detailed. The text assumes that the student is already quite familiar with the undelying math and therefore is light on clear detailed explanations of the process.
I find it frustrating that there is no "Technical Support" website or phone number. There appears to be an error in the calculation of the Utilization factor RHO and a software malfunction in the same step. The value continues to increase as you repetively cycle beteen screens. This is clearly a malfunction but in addition the value for Rho is not Lamda/Mu-- the calculated value appears to be in error. How do I contact the author concerning this problem? IF any reader knows how to solve this problem or can otherwise help, I would appreciate it.

A Fantastic Cook Book.......2005-08-03
I have had this book for a few years and have tried most of the recipes and they are right on the mark. You cannot fail if you follow the directions. The cookies are very tasty even the ones I was skeptical about. You will love the jazzed up taste at least that's what my guests say. The book is very well written and the techniques are easy to follow. I have all of Ms. Benedicts cook/entertaining books and I am truely a fan of all of them. I cannot wait till she comes out with another book.
A Unique Guide.......2004-07-03
The Sophisticated Cookie does an excellent job with a tricky subject: cooking with booze. While it is perhaps a fallacy that "all the alcohol bakes out;" at least most of it does, and we are frequently left with flavor that is, well, sophisticated. You might find your liquor cabinet woefully understocked for some of these delicacies; on the other hand, you might be inspired to finally reach for some of those neglected aperitifs you've been so carefully sheltering all these years. Thanks, Jeanne Benedict, for raising the humble cookie to its rightful place in the pantheon of ciusine.

Fabulously Different Cookies.......1999-04-15
I make between 100 and 150 cookies each week for the S.C. House of Representatives of which my husband is a member. This is my fifth year of making the cookies and I never repeat a recipe, so I'm always on the lookout for good cookie recipes. I made the Wild Walnut Wheels this week and they were a huge hit. I was amazed at how good the Kamikaze cookies were - who ever heard of a lime cookie? This is the first cookie cookbook I have owned that truly has some new and different recipes. Highly recommended!!!!!!!!
Lots of good ideas for innovative cookie treats.......1998-11-27
This is a good collection of recipes using spirits in unusual ways. Some of the directions may be a little sketchy, but the ideas are "stimulating" and can be extrapolated to creations not suggested here. I would like to see a book with recipes for other baked goods using liquors and liqueurs.
Fresh ideas for everyone from beginners to experts!.......1998-11-24
I have made thousands of cookies in my life. I find this book a fresh new idea to Christmas baking as well as all times of the year. The techniques are easy to follow and are beneficial to everyone from begininner baker to the expert. I have sampled many of the recipes and found them delicious and have gotten rave reviews from the tasters. Ms. Benedict has a great idea and I can't wait for the next volume of sophisticated cookies. Thanks for the book and keep baking!!
