I thought this would be more useful phrases for everyday Polish, not for travel to Poland. It's a very good travel book. Sections broken down well so you can easily find the right phrases, but this is more for travel.

five times that I visited Poland. It covers everything

A Good Phrase Book .......2006-07-07
This is definitely a good phrase book, the pronunciation guide words are a big help. Depending on how far you plan on going with your polish studies, makes a big deal when it comes to purchasing this product. If you are looking to pick up on a few important phrases or common words, this book will serve its purpose. If you looking to learn a bit more than basic communication. I still recommend this book in addition to some other Polish self-learning courses, preferable an audio or CD-ROM tutorial. Like Eurotalk or Rosetta Language Online. This book will help you commit to memory some of the things these programs teach you, while your at the office or out and about, and need a convenient reference to check your memory against. Overall this is a good product.

I like the layout of the dictionary (the sections of useful material), and the pronunciation guides.
I think it is lacking in the number of words that it translates from the Polish to the English, in particular. Truly wish it had more words than it does, so must give it no more than 3 stars.

I purchased this dictionary because I had to write letters in Polish. I speak Polish; but, I have difficulty in reading and writing it. I found that the dictionary was lacking in quite a few Polish translations for common words.
Very Good Book.......2003-11-21
My 8 year old is learning polish (her choice) and this book has really helped alot! Not only has it helped her but it has also helped my aunt who speaks mostly polish, with helping with her homework.
It also includes alot of extras like numbers, months, and the pronunciation cz, wz and so on. I highly recommend if help is needed in either english or polish.

Excellent Resource for ESL Teachers!.......2007-05-24
I was lucky enough to be in a situation where my adult ESL classroom had enough in-classroom copies for all students to use during classtime. I used this almost everyday. It's a fantastic way to teach new vocabulary, especially when you combine its use with other teaching tools, such as acting out motions. I often had my students use the books to quiz each other. This is a good resource, and if you can get enough copies for everyone in your class to share, DO IT!

I host foreign exchange students and the first few weeks this helps them out till they get just a better grasp of the English language. Most come with a very good understanding, but if they need to go to the doctor's or something this picture dictionary is just the thing to help out. It is useful around the house also.

One of my specialties is vocabulary, so I'm always looking good visual dictionaries. I've bought half I've found, and most of the rest are on my shopping list. This is a very close second to the Oxford Picture Dictionary as my favorite. It's not as comprehensive and the illustrations are not as good, but the topical arrangement is better and it's easier on your budget. The authors have written several other excellent ESL books. Two of their vocabular books include a basic version of this one and Day By Day: English For Employment Communication. Their Foundations is a conversation book but is also a good vocabulary builder.
Ultimate ESL Resource - - I Love It, My Students Love It ! !.......2000-11-06
By the authors of SIDE BY SIDE this is a much more colorful and better organized picture dictionary than the formerly more popular OXFORD PICTURE DICTIONARY. Whenever I bring it to class, if the students don't have it, the first thing atleast 70% will ask me is "Where can I get it ?" - - used with the accompanying flash cards (not included) you can teach entire (and substantive) lessons with just those two things alone... and even without it, you can use it to expand amply from whatever text book you're using. The chapters on the household, occupations, places around town, work activities are especially useful. In my begining classes we learn how to ask each other questions about these subjects, and begin all our classes discussing what we did over the weekend, what we did at work etc. etc. We talk about our house, our family... and all these topics are with Level 1 students, eye to eye (pair work, group work, class discussion)and facilitated by lessons from this book. - - Pictures get students talking and open them up and this is the ultimate resource ! ! !
As a tip, the students love looking at the pictures and discussing them, so to keep activities interactive, have students share books... or make worksheets where the students have to exchange information ! ! !

The author focuses his attention on Sumner's pre-Civil War years when his influence on behalf of the Union and the antislavery cause reached its zenith.
David Donald is renowned for his meticulous research and well written books. He used diaries, manuscripts, scrapbooks, family histories, letters, newspaper files, and valued secondary sources to flesh out his subject. Donald spent ten years on this book and during that time had to absorb the arcane knowledge of the 19th century in such subjects as medicine, law, politics, etc. His scholarship is impeccable. Though forty years have elapsed since the original publication of this book it still satisfies both the casual and serious reader.
If a theme can be assigned to this very good book, it would be, "Sumner was a man who wouldn't compromise his principles no matter the cost." Sumner believed, "...to sanction the enslaving of a single human being was an act which cannot be called small, unless the whole moral law which it overturns or ignores is small." He was convinced that the appeasement of slave holders was impossible; that the various compromises enacted by the Senate were abdications of Northern principle in order to placate the South and to forestall an inevitable constitutional crisis. Sumner pointed out that supporters of the Compromise of 1850 were in fact extreme sectionalists, while antislavery agitators were the true nationalists.
The author points out that slavery was the one great issue beginning in the late 1840s and continuing through the Civil War. Sumner battled the "peculiar institution" for years and made the abolition of slavery paramount. He became the chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, a post which he made more important than that of any Ambassador and more influential than that of the Secretary of State of the United States. By 1851, Sumner was one of the most powerful men on the North American continent and was known throughout Europe.
When first viewing slaves Sumner said, "They appear to be nothing more than moving masses of flesh, unendowed with anything of intelligence above the brutes." This book clearly illustrates why his opinion changed and why this complex man fought the lonely fight to remove all legal barriers that sustained racial discrimination. Sumner believed such discrimination fostered racial inferiority and was psychologically harmful to Blacks. He believed the pledge in the Declaration of Independence for universal equality was as much a part of the public law of the land as the Constitution.
In this regard, Sumner continually excoriated the public to reform slavery and eventually influenced hundreds of thousands of Northern voters. When read today, his fiery speeches seem ponderous and stilted. Further, Sumner often used illogical reasoning and had a tendency to extend a principle to its utmost limits - he could be irritating and obtuse at time. Regardless, he was a powerful spokesman for the antislavery movement and his speeches solidified Northern opinion in the "great crusade."
In reading this book, its clear Sumner was insensitive to the power of his words. He really didn't care as he had a remarkable power of rationalization and convinced himself that expediency and justice coincided where the abolition of slavery was concerned. The author hasn't overlooked the part that fortuitous circumstances played in the selection of Sumner as one of the most powerful and enduring forces in the pre-Civil War government. (He led the Radical Republicans during the Civil War) While the borderline between myth and history is often blurred, the author proves that the myth in Sumner's life more often than not matched the real Charles Sumner.
Sumner's involvement in the slavery issue seems compulsive to 21st century readers but it was an outgrowth of his life and times. The humanity of a society can be measured by the quality of its compassion and its ability to feel the anguish of others. In contrast, the inability to feel the lash that strikes another's back is the most destructive trait a society can possess.
Sumner's moral compassion wouldn't allow him to act otherwise when it came to slavery. Sumner believed the issue was simple: Slavery was evil, stamp it out!
This is superb Americana.
