Several years ago gay and lesbian studies departments were added to the curriculum of several universities and today there is a revision going on in those departments because things have been changing so fast. There has always been something of a conflict between the discipline known as "queer theory" and the broader field of GLBT studies in the academic world. "LGBT Studies and Queer Theory" attempts to take queer theorists head on and tries to marry the two disciplines.
The book is a collection of essays in many different fields from leading academics. The goal is to place queer theory into both social and historical contexts while looking at the entire field of academic studies. The book shows how queer theory is linked to major issues in the world today including the rise of capitalism and the study of gender, among others.
This is not a book to be read for the pleasure of reading, rather it is a highly scholarly study which shows the influence of homosexuality on the way we live today. For those who are not familiar with the academic approach to GLBT studies, this book can serve as a Bible--as a guide through academia. The book is conveniently divided into specific discipline areas such as "Bisexuality and Queer Theory", "Assimilation Politics and Cinematic Hedonics..." and "Sexual Values and Citizenship" to name a few.
The numerous disciplines that are involved in queer theory are all here--history, cinema, communications, religion and ethics, etc. but "LGBT Studies" even goes one step further to include disciplines not usually associated with it. The issue that I was especially glad to see was how to deal with the issues that arrive from working in and teaching queer theory. Is queer theory a viable choice to find a home on the university level? How does one explain his career choice when he opts to work in the area of queer theory? These are two questions I often think of. Much of the success of any type of "queer" curriculum depends upon two things--those teaching and those learning. Both sides must be completely comfortable in who they are. We live in a world that is constantly evolving. I recently took a group of adolescent boys to a hotel out of town for the weekend. Five years ago this would have been unheard of--a gay man driving a group of adolescent boys across state lines and sleeping in the same hotel with them. The world is changing very quickly and everyday there are new challenges and new freedoms. We deserve the right to be studied. We have made some valuable contributions to the world. Would we have done so if we were straight? Is there any merit attached to sexual orientation? These are questions for queer theorists. To have them, they must be trained. To train them, there must be material. "LGBT Studies and Queer Theory" is a step in that direction.

Traditional approaches to nationalism tend to exaggerate the antiquity of the nation-state while ignoring the eighteenth- and nineteenth-century origins of nation building in Western Europe and North America. Jim Mac Laughlin argues for a more grassroots, place-centered approach to understanding nation building. Mac Laughlin assesses competing models of nationalism and nation building in the works of key theorists such as Gellner, Hecter, and Nairn, and puts forward an alternative dialectical model grounded in historical and geographical specificity. Using Ireland as a case study, he locates Irish nationalism and Ulster unionism in a variety of clearly defined regional and social class contexts. Emphasizing the strategic and symbolic significance of "place," Mac Laughlin identifies certain areas as nationalist or unionist heartlands while others remain contested terrain over which both sides continue to disagree.

Decent Introduction.......2007-10-02
This wasn't the most exciting history book I've ever read but it was an informative and concise history of the region. The region known as the Adirondacks is a huge tract of wilderness in northern New York that, as Terrie describes it, is "an unintended mix of private land, villages, and state-owned wilderness." In the opinion of this lifelong frequenter of "The Dacks," it is one of the most beautiful places on earth. Terrie thoroughly explains the conflicting intentions for the region that have plagued it since it was first explored and settled in the 18th century. The conflict was between those who recognized it's unique natural beauty and wanted to preserve it as such, and those who saw it as just another land to be exploited for it's natural resources. More recently, the struggle continues as everyday residents of the region battle the bureaucratic Adirondack Park Agency for the right to grow economically, something which has been consistently denied to them, due to the stringent restrictions on any kind of development. Originally published in 1997, it is a bit dated, but for any fellow Adirondack lovers, I would say it's definitely worth checking out.

This is truly fine work. The relatively new genre of environmental history has produced the usual amount of academic turgidity, but many of these young historyians clearly love the land that they write abot, and have the skills to make discussions of the history of human interacton with natural systems into literature. If you enjoy Terrie, you should also pick up Bullough's Pond by Diana Muir.

I have always loved the Adirondacks, but after reading this astonishingly well-written book I have a new appreciation for this remarkable region. If you're a fellow Adirondacks-lover I HIGHLY recommend this book. Also, if you have time to read only one history of the Adirondacks, then this is the one to read.

They present the first comparative cross-national study of the labor relations in Japanese North American automobile transplants, Japanese joint ventures with the Big Three automakers, and Japanese-style General Motors auto plants. They specifically focus on the challenges the Japanese lean production model has posed to North American auto labor's organizing, collective bargaining, and shop floor representation experiences and how the United Auto Workers and the Canadian Auto Workers have responded to these challenges. The authors point to the pressing need for the North American labor movement, whose legal rights are rooted in a mass production regime, to rethink its interests and goals if it is to successfully confront the formidable obstacles presented by a changing international and hemispheric political economy increasingly dominated by Japanese lean production practices.

The book provides practical advice and suggestions. I found the comprehensive check list of all the things that must be considered prior to startup quite useful. Also helpful are the phone numbers and addresses for various MD, VA, and DC government and economic development offices.
The book is a great resource relative to making sure that you don't overlook things that could be critical to your business. For example, I found the section of hiring and firing enlightening relative to potential impact on a new company's unemployment compensation rate. Who would know that the IRS would make your company chargeable for the unemployment claims of an ex-employee who voluntarily leaves for another job and gets fired after a few weeks.
I would highly recommend the book to anyone starting a small business. It is well organized and a quick read. It helps you know what questions to ask and who to ask. It is not intended as an in-depth resource book.

Compiled by J.Q. Adams and Pearlie Strother-Adams, Dealing With Diversity is less an anthology and more a collection of opinionated articles regarding sociological issues. While this anthology features many works by reknowned people in the field, neither author of the anthology really goes into any great depth in regards to the articles. There's plenty of interesting stuff here though that sociology majors will find handy for reference, which is about all this anthology ends up being good for anyway. Worthwhile for advanced students and majors in the field, and that's about it.

Diversity in the workplace has made significant progress in United States companies. Unfortunately, much of the apparent progress has been at the surface-level of diversity (Hiller & Day, 2004), where readily visible characteristics identify people of varying genders, ages, ethnicity, and religions. What are needed are prescriptions, based on solid theory and research, that will allow the deep-level diversity to transform well intentioned affirmative action programs from their old reliance on surface-level diversity to a new reliance on deep-level diversity. It is our hope that this volume will stimulate the scholarly activity needed to make progress toward the above stated goal of making deep-level diversity the benchmark of human progress in the workplace.

This is essential reading for local church pastors and their supervisors. It helps explain the various dynamics of how individuals grow spiritually into various "types". By figuring out your own spiritual "type" and that of your congregation you can clearly see where difficulties could occur in pastoral care and preaching. Seminarians would be greatly served by reading this along with their theology and biblical books.

I purchased an autographed copy of this book at the Goddess 2000 festival. It was meant to be a gift for my lesbian employer. I read the book on the flight back to WV. I laughed all the way home. I love the Fionna Morgan's wicked sense of humor. The photos showed the beauty of ordinary women. Shining through was Hidden hints of eroticism, intriging yet in good taste. not tackly like some of the opposite gender type photos. The recipes are great too. Healthy stuff that makes a body feel alive with energy for the "other" suggestions in the book. I must confess, I never did give the book to my employer. I kept it myself.

I ordered this book as a holiday gift for my partner. After I received it, I could not stop reading it long enough to wrap it!
We have found lots of yummy new dishes, thanks to the generous vegetarian sections. Though with all of the beautiful photographs and erotic stories to distract us, I'm still surprised that we managed to actually cook anything!
