Book Description
A practical, hands-on road map for negotiating the corporate maze, Leading features inspirational stories of business leaders who made a difference, real-life case studies, and discussions of such vital topics as developing a code of business ethics, revolutionizing personnel management, and overcoming setbacks no matter how daunting.
It also explores, and shows how to triumph over, the little-discussed "darker side" of leadership.
Customer Reviews:
a fascinating application of the labyrinth.......1999-08-10
I really enjoyed this book as I have walked the labyrinth in France but never concieved of the three part journey as a path for the corporate leader. The author is an original thinker whose writing style is most engaging and very entertaining.
"It has made me think on a new level".......1998-09-02
I had the good fortune of being in one of Jeff Patnaude's leadership seminars where I got to experience the Maze first hand. Not only does the Journey into inner management work, Patnaude is one who "walks his talk" and lives from the "inside out".
I feel this book is absolutely brillant!!! I love it!.......1998-03-31
This book has great articulation, and great methods of how to incorporate a more personal aspect to the corporate world. I feel that in many companies in todays society, they are lacking a great deal of personality, and is to invloved with the every day buisness of buisness. This book, Leading From the Maze, offers many great solutions as well as humour. I would like to recomend it to anyone to feels stuck in the work place, or feels they need to figure out how to put creativity back into their daily lives.
the labyrinth as a leadership model is brilliant.......1998-01-16
His style of writing is most engaging as he is a story teller, humorist and provocative thinker. If business could encourage this style of leadership, the world would indeed change as the author suggests. I am attempting the "inner management" practices in my work as a result of reading this book. Thank you.

This is a great quick reference dictionary. It does does not contain as many terms as Black's Legal Dictionary does, but it is easy to carry around.

Good Overview of Project Management.......2005-09-12
This book offers a good overview of all the key processes in project management. It is clear and easy to understand. Case studies are included so you can see how the concepts are applied. I don't think the "24 hours" is a gimmick. You can read each chapter in about an hour. However, it would take a little longer if you worked out the exercises for the case study.
Lists and Definitions Only.......2005-07-09
In the project management field, projects by definition are unique and variable, and must be taken on a case-by-case basis. Therefore, beware of books that try to quantify and standardize methods in a field that is vastly fluid and varied by nature. In order to make any sense, such books must remain at a very high level to avoid alienating project managers with especially unique needs, but this very same high level of coverage usually results in terms and recommendations that are so vague as to lose their effectiveness. That goes double for this book. First of all, the "24 Hours" promise of the title is nothing but a gimmick from the Dummies school of bookstore education, and no professional would take such a thing seriously. Based on the nature of your real world experiences and requirements, 24 days, 24 weeks, or even 24 months are more realistic in learning project management.
The "24 hours" gimmick could possibly be ignored except for the fact that this book is constructed as if such a thing really were possible, with the multitudinous characteristics of project management chopped up awkwardly and arbitrarily into 24 segments, which consist of little more than repetitive lists and definitions. The deepest this book gets into the real nitty-gritty of project management is the calculation of basic budgetary percentages and figuring out how many people to invite to a meeting, in the guise of hypothetical "projects" that are hard to take seriously - organizing a banquet and restoring an old building. Missing altogether is the fundamental challenge of project management - dealing with variety while knowing how to deeply analyze the common themes and knowledge of the discipline. Not recommended. [~doomsdayer520~]
Well written and complete.......2003-02-17
Nice book. Does the job of many other books. Good work.
Project Management by Nancy Mingus.......2002-05-01
This is a well written, very thorough book on an important topic. Project management can be dry (as my students will attest), but the clear writing, numerous examples, various kinds of sidebars, and case studies, make it interesting. The sidebars include FYI's, "Just a minute" advice, cautions, time savers, and "go to" cross references. The book is well organized, carefully covering the basics then moving through starting a project, developing, executing, controlling, and closing it out. It includes chapters on project management software, and she even includes a section on celebrating the end of a project with pizza and wings. Talk about being thorough!
The book was written primarily for self-education (the title is "Teach Yourself" ...), but it would serve equally well as the textbook in a project management course, or as a supplement in a systems analysis course.
Personally, I do not care for the "24 hour" idea, with the topics indicated by Hour 1, Hour 2, etc., but that artifact can be ignored.

One of the best MS project references........2006-02-10
I have been a PM now for five years and have created many a project schedule. This book was great for teaching me how to use MS Project as well as a reference now on the features that I don't use that often. I would highly recommend this book if you are new to project. I have never tried to do the exercises, so I would go with the other reviewers on the download problem. For the content of this book on how to use project, this book can not be beat!
Fatal error.......2003-06-22
I purchased this book because I needed to teach myself to use Microsoft Project in a hurry. Unfortunately, there's one big problem. The book indicates that there are "sample Project files" and "solutions to exercises" that pertain to many of the lessons, and that they are available on a particular website. Unfortunately, the files are no longer available on that website, and I can't find them anywhere else.
This makes me furious, because there's no reason that SAMS couldn't make these files easily accessible on their own website, but they don't seem to want to support this book, which is still widely available for purchase. Don't buy this book unless you don't mind that files are unavailable.
PEN IS FULL OF INK.......2000-10-24
With such different reviews, I had to see for myself. Whatever technical difficulties existed with downloading unuseable files have been fixed. This book is indeed logical and well-written in an easy to read but informative style. I'd recommend it for new and intermediate level users who don't like the "press the enter key" style of books. This one gives you "the why's and the how's" and lets you experiment, with the beginning and ending points in the downloadable files.
LIKE A PEN WITHOUT INK.......2000-09-03
I bought this book because it had supporting files which you could download from the website to work through the projects. However, the files were created with the beta version of the software and will not open in the full release version of Project 2000. So in other words you will not be able to do the exercises unless you are wanting to do allot of typing which in turn makes this book not able to be done in 24 hours.
Project made easy.......2000-07-20
This book is well worth it's price. I have been using Project for years now and I was surprised at the lack of references out there in the market. Most books are either too simple or you need a Ph.D. to understand the material. However, this books is perfect for me to give to my students who are new to the program. I love the way the lessons are broken down into segments. The flow of the material is natural and sensible. The style of writing is also very down to earth, as should reference manuals be. The material is accurate and the tricks are helpful. Even though I am a seasoned user, I did pick up a few new tricks after reading the book.
Thank you so much for writing a such a great book. I am confident my students will benefit from reading this book, I know I did!

I think this book is excellent. I found the material accurate and easy to follow. I brought this book for my whole project team, I thought so highly of it meeting it's title claim. I was able to take a topic and actually learn it in the alloted time. The beginning chapters provide a good overview of the topics and using MS Project, setting up the project, and good structured project design. When I have a team I need to get up to speed quickly on MS Project, I will again use this book as the tool.

Teach Yourself Microsoft Project 2000.......2001-01-02
Quinn's Teach Yourself Microsoft Project 2000 is on target. Many of the people that I meet and work with want to learn or enhance their Microsoft Project skills. Learning theory tells us that teaching ourselves is an excellent, effective and efficient way to master new skills. A critical issue is whether the materials are available, and that's a role this book fulfills.
Reviewing and reflecting immediately upon learning new materials lead to mastery of the subject. Specifically, the end-of-the-chapter sections, Personal Workbook, Extra Practice, Visual Quiz, and Real-World Applications, provide superior self-teaching opportunities. This book states it purpose to allow us to learn Microsoft Project 2000 on our own terms and pace and accomplishes its goals. It's a great way to learn this important and popular software.
More useful than any other Project book I've come across.......2000-05-20
The many screen shots make this book very easy to follow, and strategically to-the-point. I love the incredible number of websites mentioned throughout the book; very handy. The review "quizzes" at the end of each section make this a very nice self-teach book...more so than any other I've come across. On a minor note, the size of the book, the fonts, and the colors make this pleasing to read. I'm glad I got this book.
Teaching yourself is the only way to learn this product.......2000-05-18
My view on what a good software book ought to look like has changed a bit over the years. I use to think it needed to include all of the step-by-steps with detailed examples, but the books just kept coming out with longer and longer list of steps that took forever to navigate. Then I wanted comprehensive desktop reference books but found I never read them and I was always throwing them out with my increasing number of phone books that would pile up in my office. Often I would buy one of those books and then realize when the new version came out I had never even opened the book. I am not sure why I though I would read several 1000+ page technical reference books a year. I can't even get throught the New York Times on Sundays anymore. Besides, MSP on-line help has improved so much that approach seems a bit dated.
Oh yes, I am embarrassed to admit, I too have bought the dummy and idiot books. I won't say more.
For me, learning software is all up to me. I have to teach myself and all I need is a basic guide to work with. I want simple, clean, easy to read, and to-the-point types of books. You know, books that give you just the right amount of information about topic to get you pointed in the right direction. Books, that you mind to much when you find yourself sort of thumbing through topics. Sort of learning and little, and then moving to another topic. This book fits the bill for me. I know software pretty well so I just want the "gist of a topic," a good screen example, and then a couple of steps. Then I am off figuring out the rest on my own.
What I also like about this book is the consistency in approach and organization. Every page has two screen captures in the same location. The steps are right below them, and a topic is only going to span a couple of pages.
I like the blue. The book feels good.
One thing I found myself doing with this book is looking up all of the web sites referenced on the odd-numbered pages. Found some cool project management stuff along the way and read chapters that caught my eye.
Seems MSP is starting to look more like a project management tool with its new WBS custom codes and network diagram that seems to actually work. Now, if Microsoft would only spend a little money on the product and give us a multiple undo (say at least 100) for a little if-then-thinking, I would be a happy planner.

Customer Reviews:
excellent cookbook.......2007-09-23
This cookbook is easy to understand and does not require a lot of cooking skill. The recipies are easy and delicious, and a lot of them use the same basic ingredients so you can mix and match with appetizers and dinners. I am very happy with my purchase.
Good cook book.......2003-11-29
We just got back from a wonderful trip to Istanbul and Greece and I must say upon returning I was looking for some more of those wonderful meze and the Turkish Delights (yum). So I took a chance on this cookbook since there aren't many (any others) out there that are vegetarian never mind vegan! I'm really enjoying this cookbook - the first 76 pages (out of 249 so that's not a big deal) are indeed history/travelogue but its kind of fun to flip through and the pictures were of some of the same places we visited so that was neat. Just before the recipes there's a section on subsitites and here the author gives you the info you need to find certain ingedients that might not be in the local supermarket - e.g. there's discussion of egg substitites and where to find them, non-dairy butter substitites and where to find them, meat/fish substitites and where to find them etc. In the recipes there are some ingredients like non-meat chicken broth that is called for. Why not just go with a vegetable broth? I did. Anyway, the recipes have all been great so far. I've tried mostly mezes so far - the fried carrots, the fried eggplant with two sauces, stuffed grapeleaves (mine never turn out looking like they should - need more practice...). There are wonderful soups in here - the only one I've made so far was the hot and spicy soup, but others like the lentil look good too. I definitely recommend this cookbook. I had a *really* hard time finding vegetarian dishes in restarants in Istanbul which is why I enjoyed a lot of mezes, so I can see why there are recipes in here (like Sultan's delight) that use meat substitutes. I think this is quite authentic and the author did a terrific job at trying to bring the Turkish flavors to the vegetarian table!
Disappointed.......2001-06-08
I find this book disappointing. Firstly, one fourth of the book is taken up by the author's travel accounts. It's a different story when an author gives some background to each recipe. But it is not the case here and I find the result of those two books rolled into one very awkward. Second, and more annoyingly, many recipes rely on meat substitutes. I have always found it sad and the sign of a certain lack of imagination when vegetarian cooking tries to mimick meat-based dishes. It is particularly regrettable in a book on Turkish cooking which has a rich tradition of NATURALLY vegetarian dishes. Which is why I ordered the book in the first place !
