Book Description
Formerly, a library was viewed as a place for information storage and information was viewed as simply bits of data. Furthermore, many wielded information as a tool of power, in that those who had more information had more authority. It is becoming increasingly clear that shared collective knowledge of an organization is of far greater value than that of each individual's privately held data. In view of the librarian's changing profession, it has also become clear that they are now being charged with the mission to explore and implement new and innovative methods to encourage sharing and to better manage information.
The articles selected for this compendium are well thought-out and organized and are drawn from the fields of information and library science and business management. Since most special libraries are corporate libraries, the selections are taken from these different disciplines to provide perspectives from both a business standpoint and an information management one. The selections contain many different predictions about libraries and librarians of the future. They focus on new roles and highlight the importance of the profession. With the rapid growth of technology, end-users are being inundated with choices. They need expert advice from experienced practitioners. Currently, much of the literature focuses solely on the management of libraries as opposed to environment in which libraries operate. The purpose of this reader is to correct that.
James M. Matarazzo is Dean and Professor at the Simmons College Graduate School of Library and Information Science. Prior to joining the Simmons faculty, he was Assistant Science Librarian, and later, Government Documents Librarian and Head of Technical Reports at the Libraries of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Jim's research interests focus on three general issues: the closing of corporate libraries, how management values these libraries, and excellence in corporate library operations. He holds a B.A. and M.A. degrees from Boston College, and an M.S. degree from Simmons College, and a Ph.D from the University of Pittsburgh.
Suzanne Connolly is a Manager with Ernst & Young's Center for Business Knowledge, a center devoted to the capture, synthesis and redeployment of knowledge resources. Her work focuses on creating business processes to support Ernst & Young's internal management infrastructure. Suzanne's research examines the changing role of the corporate library in American business and knowledge management within organizations. Prior to joining Ernst & Young, she worked for Fidelity Investments in Boston. Suzanne holds a B.A. in English from Boston College and an M.S. in Library and Information Science from Simmons College.
· The most up-to-date and most relevant articles on the subject drawn from the fields of: information , library science, business management
· Unique focus on the theme of knowledge and libraries' new role/ model within corporations

Customer Reviews:
An Excellent Book on Management.......2005-09-22
I first read "Management" by Hellriegel and Slocum when I was doing my MBA in 1989. Management was one of my favourite subjects then since I needed practical guidance on how to effectively plan, lead, motivate, organise and control my large department in my organisation with large numbers of subordinates under me. I then found the book to be very useful, easy to understand and logical and I used it to achieve excellent results in the subject.
Some few years after graduation, I was back at the university, being a part time lecturer in Management. I again used the book as one of the recommended textbooks. I have since stopped lecturing and still find that the authors have kept the book updated and relevant to the current thinking and practice of management. For students doing an undergraduate course in management, I strongly recommend the book as it is comprehensive, properly structured to introduce the subject and then step-by-step develop it to the end. As a facilitator, I also find the Annotated Instructor's Edition to be very handy as it covers all the topics that are required at undergraduate level and help the instructor prepare and conduct classes. The various "Insights" are very important in highlighting some aspects of the topics. The numerous case studies are also very critical in reinforcing the practical application of the important and interesting subject of management.
ITS A STUDY GUIDE!!!.......2004-12-19
I was MISLEAD by the title of this listing, since there is no picture I thought it was an actual textbook, only softcover. When it arrived it turns out to be a study guide to the textbook!? I am a struggling college student and I lost $45 shipped on this one. (you dont need the study guide unless you have money to burn and and dont know how to take notes in class;p) I had to buy the hardcover textbook of course, another hefty $120 at the time...good going amazon, next time put a picture, or dont offer it for sale!
it is truly an excellent book.......1999-09-16
Teaching from this book is pure pleasure. It is well organized, up-to-date,and has excellent examples.
easy to read; great graphics; competencies are real plus.......1999-09-11
An excellent basic management book. Total coverage of the field. Great examples of managers from all walks of life and all colors.
great book........1999-08-24
the best management textbook on the market

A Superb and Thorough Work.......2004-07-14
This is a book for anyone doing supervision in a mental health field. It provides a much needed and innovative approach to supervision and includes material on strategies, diversity, legal and ethical considerations, role of personal values, evaluation, and disruptions to the supervisory process. There is a wealth of information and resources to enrich every level of supervision. It can be used as a text or for reference and contains excellent tools in the appendices.
A Great Text for Graduate Courses.......2004-07-08
This book reflects an intelligent, scholarly approach to a complex process that examines all aspects of competency in clinical supervision. The chapters dealing with diversity and ethics are outstanding, and the appendices provide a gold mine of practical guidance for both the supervisee and the supervisor. This is a must-read for academics, for practicum, internship, and postdoctoral supervisors, and for licensing regulators as well as a great text for much needed graduate courses.
-Asher R. Pacht, PhD, Department of Psychology, University of Wisconsin-Madison
Excellent text and reference.......2004-07-05
This is an incredible book. The breadth and depth is excellent with insight for the most sophisticated supervisor along with the less experienced. I was very pleased with the chapter layout and the inclusion of personal factors as well as the expansive sections on diversity, evaluation, and legal and ethical considerations in supervision. The panoply of evaluation tools in the Appendix are a bonus that more than justify the purchase of this volume.

Book Description
This book answers two basic questions for educational practitioners. The first is how educators may re-design an entire school system to perform at the highest optimum levels. The second -- and no less important -- is what exactly educational administrators may do not only to manage, but also to reward the performance that sustains those very improvements. This book should be of interest to the K-12 administrator, the teacher and school board member, the consultant, professors teaching topical courses, or any layperson interested in the issue of school improvement.

Customer Reviews:
This is a lovely and useful cookbook.......2006-08-09
Now unlike the last cookbook I reviewed, this has real comfort food! It also has great photos for each recipe. Most of them are easy for the average cook. The macaroni and cheese looked and sounded yummy! The desserts were the best. Coconut custard pie and mile-high chocolate layer cake photos made me salivate.
splendid comfort food.......2002-08-30
Diane Rossen Worthington's "Diner", a volume of Sunset Magazine's "Casual Cuisine of the World", celebrates true American classics like beer batter onion rings, mile-high chocolate cake, chicken pot pie, and---yes, tuna melt! Since the events of last September, many Americans have returned to the "cocooning" joys of family life, and comfort food meals. Frankly, despite the lures of exotic recipes and of the latest fad wonder diets, many of us have always used these American classics as staple family menus.
The photography is gorgeous, and guaranteed to make your mouth-water and head you toward the kitchen. The recipes do require some actual kitchen time and preparation, but as most mothers can tell you, sometimes preparing comfort food is a solace in itself. Experienced cooks will be able to use microwave shortcuts, although these recipes are stove-top and oven in design.
This book can also serve as a coffee-table book because these perennially popular American dishes, so artfully photographed, constitute an art form. Now how about tying on an apron and putting together a coconut custard pie for dessert this evening! Recommended.
Smash Hit on Soup Nite.......2001-02-23
Each week, folks in our neighborhood get together for "Soup Nite". Nothing fancy - Someone brings bread, another salad, another desert etc., good food, good folks, a great time. Soup is our contribution. A few weeks ago we had one of those all-American menues - Cream of Chicken Soup, biscuits, salad & banana cream pie. For kicks I did a little web-surfing for recipes. All roads led straight to this cookbook. Cream of Chicken Soup = the filling from the Chicken Pot Pie recipe plus extras. Banana Cream pie = Coconut Custard Pie recipe sans coconut plus bananas. Results = Absolutely NO left-overs, the couple from England thought they'd died & gone to heaven & many belts had to be loosened a notch or two. Best part = the look of blissful contentment on each and every dinner guest's face. Can't ask for more than that. One other thing, we don't expect to find Chicken-fried Steak with biscuits & gravy as an entree at the superb 4-star restaurant we make a pilgrimage to each year. You'll find that along with burgers, chili & cornbeef hash (but no mention of goat cheese) on the menu at a little place called "The Diner" over on Main St.
A Comfort Food Classic.......2000-09-26
The two other reviews for "Diner" are diametrically opposed so I would like to break the tie.
This is a wonderful little cookbook and everyone I show it to absolutely loves it.
The reviewer who "one star-ed" this book for not being up to snuff is completely missing the point. "Diner" is one book in a series entitled "The best of CASUAL cuisines of the world" and by the name is obviously filled with hearty Diner-style recipies.
It is not a "Lets make the most outragous thing we can think of from a list of ingredients that would make Martha Stewart green with envy" type of book. It is not supposed to be.
The Forward that briefly cronicles the history of the American Diner and the side notes to the recipies are worth the price of admission. The photography is terrific and, even though a FEW of the items are very simple to prepare, all the recipies I have tried are very tasty.
If you are a cookbook SNOB this may not be the book for you, but for the rest of comfort food loving America I think it would be a welcome addition to any cookbook collection! (Especially one that sits out for people to thumb through!)
A worthwhile addition to any cook's collection.......2000-09-25
This cookbook celebrates basic American food with beautiful photographs and wonderful recipes. Yes, some of its recipes are simple; but even these recipes offer seasoned cooks with new ideas and interesting alternatives. The Tricolor Coleslaw and Apple Crisp with Dried Cranberries are far superior to their counterparts with which I grew up. And the Chicken Pot Pie and Barbecue-Style Braised Short Ribs are well worth the time and effort it takes to make them. Using this cookbook is a visual pleasure and results in meals that are pleasing to both family and guests.
