Book Description
This book examines the transferability of Japanese organizational practices to Japanese owned industrial transplants in the United States, and demonstrates that relations of power and conflict on the corporate structural level are equally as significant as the social and cultural differences between American and Japanese practices in the workplace. The research is based upon extensive ethnographic fieldwork at automotive transplants in the Midwest and high-tech transplants in California, as well as a case study company in New Mexico, and focuses primarily on their adaptation to the US industrial environment.
Extensive interviews demonstrate that organizational practices of Japanese transplants are significantly different from either their Japanese or American counterparts. Relations of power at the case study company are examined in depth and reveal two contrasting forms of control. American managers tend to exert hierarchical control in the manufacturing department using a top down approach and clear distinctions between work and private lives. In contrast, the Japanese managers utilize what the author calls "poka-yoke" (fail-proof) control over the repair department. Poka-yoke control is characterized by strict attendance and dress codes, emphasizing loyalty and dedication to work. At the same time, the US. headquarters in New York and the parent company in Japan impose remote control, thus limiting the autonomy of local managers.

Depending on the reader -.......2007-01-17
As a student at a business college, we were mandated to take this course. Our teacher assigned numerous material for this class with constant reading of this book.
Depending on the level of the reader, it may not be fun for everyone. If you're looking to get into Management, then perhaps this may be an interesting book. For many however, this book is one that will surely numb you. A huge problem with this book is that it points much of the obvious out. To any that have decent to sub-par observation skills, if you are of 18 and older, many of the points mentioned will not be of knowledge or of use to yourself. The previous reviewer was right, there are numerous examples and of stories that attempt to provide interest. However, the concepts, numerous as they are, are often much too basic and lack the ability to garner interest in any shape or form.
At a certain point, you may realize that while certainly you cannot name all the specific terms and definitions that they have for any type of behavior, you already have seen it before and rereading it fails to enforce any new learning.
Dr. DuBrin is a master!.......2000-11-14
I just finished a 10 week course with Dr. DuBrin and this book was wonderful. It is written in a very easy-to-understand manner, yet still explains the basics of Organizational Behavior. The book is easy reading, but uses lots of real life examples, so it keeps your interest. Good job Dr. DuBrin!

A brilliant way to introduce our baby to cultural diversity... through food!!!.......2007-09-23
My husband and I are both foodies. We love ethnic cuisines quite a bit. So, we are so happy that our little boy, who's almost a-year-and-half, already loves items like pasta, onigiri, dim sum, fried rice, taco, quesadilla, etc.
I was so excited when I discovered this book series one day. I thought it would be a great addition to his little library, as well as being a great supplement to our effort to introduce him to all the various yummy food different people throughout the world eat. I began with "Yum Yum Dim Sum." It provides lots of fun, helps him associate these yummy dishes with exciting pictures. I cannot wait to get more.
Highly recommended!!!
LOVE this book--love the entire series!.......2007-06-27
My son *loves* this book, as well as AWS's other books in the World Snacks series. You should have seen him labeling the siu mai and other dim sum on the carts at our local restaurant! So fun, educational and beautifully illustrated too.
cool and quirky board book.......2007-05-07
My one year old son loves this board book! We actually have the entire series. It's fun and creative, and I don't have to worry about him ripping the pages. We are hooked!
Wonderful, informative book........2007-01-17
I love this book, my son loves this book, it's all good. Plus, when we go out for dim sum, he can ask for siu mai by himself. Actually, it's even educational for adults who might want to learn a bit more about dim sum. Very creative, fun illustrations, too.
Bad Illustrations.......2007-01-09
Although the idea of this book is excellent and the illustrations are creative, my son cannot tell that it is even food, so he will not even let me read it to him. He is an avid reader (2 yr old) and loves all of his books...except this one. I would love to see this series of books with a different type of illustration.

Book Description
In English, dim sum means “little hearts,” or “touches the heart,” but to this young girl, dim sum means delicious. On a visit to a bustling dim sum restaurant, a family picks their favorite little dishes from the steaming trolleys filled with dumplings, cakes, buns, and tarts. And as is traditional and fun, they share their food with each other so that everyone gets a bite of everything.
Just right for young children, Dim Sum for Everyone! celebrates a cultural custom and a universal favorite activity–eating!

Another Cute Grace Lin Book.......2007-08-05
My 3-year old daugher loves Grace Lin books with colorful pages. I think she likes seeing the same family in many of Ms. Lin's books.
Great for Multicultural Learning.......2007-01-09
I bought this book for a classroom lesson on Multiculturalism, I included a puppet with the book and the students loved it. This is a great book, and a must have for all teachers and classrooms.
FANTASTIC!.......2006-02-02
This is a fantastic book to teach young children about the Chinese brunch called dim sum. It has excellent illustrations and even has the correct names for some of the most popular dim sum dishes. My husband who is Chinese loves to buy this book for our god children and read it to them before we have dim sum! I completly recomend this book for anyone but especially those who are interested in the Chinese culture.
Dim Sum for Everyone is OK.......2005-08-03
I expected a little more from this book. A little more storyline, a little more dialogue, a little more substance. I think for an early intro to Dim Sum this books does the job, but lacks a real story. The brief history at the end included good info.
Great Intro To Dim Sum.......2005-07-27
My three year old daughter loves this book. She enjoys picking out her favorite pieces of dim sum in the book and then pointing out my favorites. The illustrations are beautiful. My daughter likes to bring the book with her when we go out for dim sum and then she matches up the food items at the restaurant with the pictures in the book. It is a good book to introduce dim sum to a child.
Customer Reviews:
Simple and delicious recipes, as good as most tea houses........1998-11-10
This is a superb book with mouthwatering dimsum. Some techniques need to be mastered, but most are simple. Seems to be very authentic with the "tea house" taste. I love this book and recommend it to everyone!
Nice update to the 82 dim sum book........1997-06-10
This is a modern version of Eileen Lo's 1982
dim sum book . . which is my personal favorite
recipe book for dim sum.
I noticed that in accordance with the new low-fat
trends of the 90's, Ms. Lo is using more infused
oils and broths than in her 82 book.
The recipes are very clear and easy to follow,
never any guess work involved.
Ms. Lo writes a little about each recipe,
explaining tid-bits about the translation of the name, regionality of the recipe, or modifications she has made.
I was especially pleased because this is the only
book I have found a recipe for "baked" BBQ pork
buns, instead of the steamed kind, a treat that
until now I could only get at chinese specialty
bakeries.
I consider this and the '82 Dim Sum book, a necessary part of any chinese cookbook collect.

There really is no reason to own any other book on the subject. I am very pleased that I bought this book and will be ordering the rest of the author's titles.
In my opinion, acquiring all of the author's cookbooks first before buying the other English language Chinese cookbooks makes an important foundation to understanding what you eat in America and how the food is cooked at home. Then proceed to the other cookbooks and hopefully to eating the more elaborate levels of Chinese cooking. I didn't pick up the author's cookbooks until very recently and only after learning that the author is from Sun Tak. I wish I had bought her books long ago.
A rare gem!.......2006-02-02
Not only does this book include all the favorite Hong Kong style dim sum dishes, but it also includes step-by-step illustrations in beautiful and yet informative pen-and-ink drawings. You will use this book for every Chinese meal, so buy two, in case one of them gets tea spilt upon it.
Customer Reviews:
What a hoot! and useful, too........2006-04-15
Each of these 30 cards is a postcard. But I can't imagine you'll ever mail one, because you'll want to keep them all for yourself.
When you go to a dim sum restaurant, the waiters drive carts around and you pick-and-choose the items you want to eat. You're charged by the plate; some, obviously, are more expensive than others. However, if you're new to the dim sum experience, the choices can be overwhelming; there's just so far you can go by pointing randomly at steamed or fried lumps that look appealing. At some point, you may want to know what an item is (so that, perhaps, you can ask for it by name when it's missing).
Each of these cards has a clear picture of one of the most common items found at a dim sum restaurant, such as shrimp dumpling, glutinous rice with chicken, sesame ball. It also includes a few items that are less common, at least at the dim sum restaurants I've been to, like pig's blood congee. The card also has the Chinese characters for the item and its pronunciation (such as "ha gow" for shrimp dumpling). The whole deck is the size of a small paperback book, so you could shove this into your purse without feeling like a tourist.
Do I need this? Probably not. But it's fun. And it would be a WayCool stocking stuffer for a foodie friend. I'm sure to buy a few more for that very purpose.

This is THE book on Dim Sum.......2007-01-18
I borrowed a copy from a friend and was delighted with the recipes. She's had her copy for years and it's held together with a rubberband. The pot stickers, shu mai, and green onion pancakes are all devine! If you want to make traditional Chinese dim sum in your home this is the book for you. Recipes and techniques are well described.
Authentic history wrapped around each recipe. The chinese experience the way my mother knew the world from 40's-70's........2005-08-27
This book has many of the recipes and ways of life that my family lived with in China. There is one special recipe in the book for deep-fried sweet sesame balls that no one else could make any better. It is this kind of unique and obscure recipe that makes this book interesting. The lore behind where the recipes came from or how people make a living with these foods is what makes the book a really good read. I love all the recipes that are included.
This is the seccond printing of the original Chinese Peoples Cookbook published in 1979. It's the same book in paperback.
It's a pretty good Chinese cook book.......2005-01-26
I have over 40 cook books covering just about every continent & country except Africa, Central & South America, & the country France. What I am looking for is for the authors to explain why a recipe works, not just giving the how + some glossy photos. This book is pretty good. It gives the basics such as type of cook ware that are needed & a few simple techniques that an average Joe can do at home. I'm giving it a 4 because I don't think any book, be it a chemistry or cook book, can explain everything. One needs a collection of books to be competent in a subject.
