Not good for the CISA exam.......2007-10-02
I bought this book as an additional material to study for the CISA exam. However it didn't help me with the exam at all. Furthermore, in an attempt to cover many things, it did not cover anything in detail. This book is just an endless recollection of bullet points. On top of that, it misses very sensitive topics like disaster recovery planning.
Useful reference material.......2007-02-02
This book has some material relevant to the CISA examination based on the 2003 content areas, although it is not organized or focused as a CISA examination guide. If you are looking for CISA review material for the test, I would strongly suggest to stick with ISACA's combination of review manual and questions CD. I also searched everywhere for study aids for this grueling test and ended up using ISACA's expensive material, but it proved to be the best choice as I passed the Dec 2006 test.
However, as owner of a copy of this book, I assure you that this is an excellent reference of IT management, planning, implementation, risk assessment and control procedures for anyone in the IT business. Most of the material is still relevant as of 2007.
Finally a usable explanation of controls!.......2006-12-30
Audit is not the most exciting topic in the world, but this no fluff book really sets the standard. The care the authors took is obvious from the start, the table of contents is one of the most detailed I have ever seen, it allows the book to be used as a reference.
My favorite chapter was Quality Management, best job of making quality approachable I have seen to date. My least favorite was Project Management, it seemed to lack the application and lean to theory a bit.
I am not an auditor, but as an auditee, this book really helped me understand how they think. Recommended!
Too thin.......2006-03-24
This is a huge book but spends no more then 1 page on any topic. In my opinion the authors only have financial audit experience and little understanding of IT controls. This book shows the failure of the 'integrated auditor' as the authors are tyring to be IT auditors with little IT experience. They touch on some very good points in a few instances and, in general, the book is decent. The authors do not know much outside of the CISA, IIA and financial based certifications as they seem to think that the ISSA (Information Systems Security Assoc.) is sponsored by ISC2/CISSP's (it is not). Overall, I have not been impressed with this book.
Great resource.......2005-12-13
Not having much experience in the IT audit field, this book was a great resource and was easy to understand.

Addresses business and technology issues - RECOMMENDED!.......2001-07-20
This book provides a unique approach that blends traditional IT auditing with business goals and objectives. Using the auditing strategy that Mr. Dayton outlines you can develop a valid baseline of your IT operational posture and its alignment to company strategy and tactics.
In addition to the audit and alignment baseline, the information gained from an audit performed in accordance with the methods given in this book also forms a complete "as is" picture. This is useful for determining where to put resources for improvement initiatives, or for determining if a complete reengineering of IT is in order. As I read through this book the strong emphasis on business issues outside of the boundaries of IT led me to conclude that a complete audit based on this approach should be a prerequisite for establishing a governance or program management office function.
The book itself is not exactly a page turner because the writing is somewhat dry. However, the approach and the wealth of worksheets and checklists (also provided on the accompanying disk) compensate for this. Among the parts of this book that I especially like are: (1) strategic business worksheets, which when completed and compiled will give a comprehensive picture of the company's business posture (it's unfortunate, but true, that this information will be a surprise to many IT departments), (2) Chapter 6 on evaluating new technologies, which takes a life cycle view of technology evaluation and selection, (3)Chapters 10 through 12, which cover recruiting, evaluating, managing and training technical personnel and working with consultants. These chapters provide a clear and unbiased assessment for the HR side of IT. The information here can also be used to develop policies, processes and procedures for human resource management, and will also provide a solid foundation if you elect to measure your organization against Software Engineering Institute's People Capability Maturity Model.
This book is an excellent resource for management and technology consultants, and larger IT organizations. The worksheets alone are worth many times the price of the book, but the true value is the way the author integrates IT and business factors into a comprehensive audit method. Highly recommended and earns 5 stars.

The best dumplings ever..........2004-02-23
I have to say that Maria Polushkin has outdone herself with the recipes in the "The Dumpling Cookbook." I have made approximately half of dropped dumplings in this recipe book and they get better each time.
The other night I told my husband I was going to make Ricotta Gnocchi for dinner. I've made them before using many other recipes, but they were always like lead balls. He and I were very disappointed in the final product. When he sat down to eat, he bit into one and said, "WOW", these are incredible. He was right; they were the best I've ever eaten. They were like slicing into butter. It was difficult to push myself away from the table.
Calling All Dumpling Lovers!!.......2000-11-29
This book is wonderful!! It spans numerous cuisines to provide a nearly complete listing of dumplings from around the world. The work includes recipes for Chinese dim sum dumplings, Italian gnocci, Jewish knishes, Eastern European perogi, and many more. A must for dumpling enthusiasts!! On the bad side, many of these dumplings are really time consuming to make. Some of the ingredients are also expensive/hard to find so it might prove a fun read but not a useful, everyday cookbook. Still, if you love dumplings, check out this book!!

I purchased this book as a quick way to make tasty healthy lunches for my husband to take to work. I found many very delicious filling recipes, which I have prepared and enjoyed myself. I also found a wide variety of wrapper recipes as a scrumptious variation for the fillings. It also has a selection of ready-made wrappers that you can purchase in your grocery store. I'm sure you will enjoy this delightful book.
I can't recommend this book.......2002-02-19
The strongest part of Edible Pockets is the various dough recipes. I've tried only a couple, but they worked. I did have to adapt the process to working dough with a stand-alone mixer. I didn't mind, but in a book that seems aimed at the complete novice, it's surprising that German doesn't address this popular alternative to bread machine and totally manual approaches.
My biggest complaint, though, is the filling recipes. Have you ever made tuna salad as usual for sandwiches and wondered how it would work if heated? Probably not, but German recommends this in the "tuna and cheese" filling and I was sucker enough to try it. For the record, celery just enough off crisp to be soggy is not a wonderful texture. And the cooking directions for fillings are misleading, as another reviewer has pointed out. An example is the "Cornish Pasty Filling," which was already well on its way to mush at half the hour's cooking time prescribed. In general, most fillings lack moisture and make for a mighty dry pocket.
German's directions for assembling the pockets are also at fault.
It's nice to know one can roll out the pastry to 1/8", but there are plenty of fillings that work best with a thicker-sided pocket. German does mention the possibility of letting the yeast-dough pockets rise before baking but fails to point out that the fillings must be at room temperature if this is going to happen. I also wonder why she is so keen on using pressing molds for calzones and other standard pockets. Unless you are cooking for an army, crimping with fingers seals the pockets just dandy.
When German says "If you have leftovers ... try using them as pocket fillings," she hits the nail on the head. If you have access to a toaster oven at work, her book helps provide a tasty lunch solution. Throw away the second half of the book, though, and dream up your own fillings.
Genuinely Addictive.......2000-04-03
My copy of this unpretentious little book is rapidly getting dog-eared. If the recipes weren't so very good, my family would surely be dog-tired of pies and turnovers by now, because I can't seem to stop making them! I literally had to start decorating my productions so that we could distinguish the three or four kinds we usually have on hand.
The book has two parts, one on wrappers, and one on fillings. Wrappers are further subdivided into yeasted, pastry, and ready-made wrappers. Fillings are split into Savoury, Vegetarian Savoury, and Sweet. I have no sweet tooth whatsoever, so I can't comment on the sweet fillings, but of the fifteen or twenty savoury fillings I've made so far, there has only been one dud.
So why only four stars?
1) The section on pastry wrappers could be a little longer, with more instruction on the often-devilish details of pastry-making.
2) I like my fillings to have interesting textures. Ms. German seems to prefer puréeing everything.
3) She has a tendency to overcook fillings (astonishing comment, coming from a Brit!)
4) She has a fondness for frozen vegetables.
The last three quibbles are obviously easily rectified by adjusting the recipes to your taste.
Highlights: Spicy Asian Chicken, Chinese Orange Beef, Piroshki, and both of the empanada recipes.
Ladies and Gentlemen, start your bread machines!

Yummy Fest.......2007-09-27
This is a terrific book. The recipes are spot on and the writing is superbly crafted. It's a delight to have a cookbook co-written by a poet! The illustrations are what really seperate this book from others. They're delicately crafted with a real eye for depicting everything from peaches to a baby lamb. You have to see it to believe it. Oh, and the pies, once cooked, are amazing. Try the blueberry peach pie and send me a piece, I'm addicted to it!

I bought this book about 2 weeks ago and made my first recipe from it. Cranberry Pear with A Walnut Crumble. This pie rocks! Easy to follow instructions and a recipe that allows the ingredients to shine through without a lot of fussiness. Already, fielding calls asking for tips and advice. But I won't give up my pie secret! Great book!

I love this book! I think it would be great for bakers of all levels of experience. I'm a seasoned pie baker, but this book definitely inspired me to try recipes outside of my comfort zone, and I had great results. The instructions are clear, easy to follow, and they think of everything ahead of time so you aren't stuck in the middle of a recipe with a sudden daunting task. And the bonus? You get to have Bubby's Pies at home!! This is a book everyone should have in their kitchen.
Happiness on every page..........2007-09-14
What simpler comfort and happiness than pie? I've used a lot of cookbooks (I own over 100) and what the best all have in common:
1)Instructions so clear, so simple--you want to dive right in. The authors have anticipated and solved all problems you could face. Just do what they say and you'll be an instant success.
2)Predictable results--I made 10 peach cobblers over Labor Day weekend and all were world-class, the best ones I've ever had.
3)Careful attention to basic techniques makes this a great book for beginners and a thoughtful, almost meditative exercise for experts. All you need to know about baking--indeed about cooking--is revealed in baking pie crust. It's a never-ending exercise in reaching elusive perfection, but you get closer each time.
Silver and Bervin give nothing away to James Beard and Alice Waters's best work on all these points! You'll congratulate yourself and buy many copies for your friends, I promise.
The finest pies in America.......2007-09-04
I've been buying pies at Bubby's since they opened their doors. And for a very good reason: they make the best tasting pies I've ever eaten. Whenever I visit relatives or friends a Bubby's pie is a required house gift (I'm frequently told which variety and how many).
So, when Bubby is prepared to teach me how to do it, I pay attention.
The first pie I made was the blueberry peach. Simple, easy-to-follow directions and fun descriptions lightened the fear factor. It was great. The next pie was Brandon's steak and guinness pie. It was every bit as good as Bubby's own, and I made it myself.
My only concern is, now that I can make these incredible pies myself, what will happen to Bubby's?
If you love pie and you can't get to Bubby's, BUY this book!
