Book Description

Politics matter for human development. Reducing poverty depends as much on whether poor people have political power as on their opportunities for economic progress. Democracy has proven to be the system of governance most capable of mediating and preventing conflict and of securing and sustaining well-being. By expanding people's choices about how and by whom they are governed, democracy brings principles of participation and accountability to the process of human development. Human Development Report 2002: Deepening Democracy in a Fragmented World examines political participation as a dimension of human development. Far from being a luxury for developing countries, democracy's strategic importance to security and stability puts political participation high on the human development agenda. But the links between democratic governance and social and economic development are not automatic. Too many democratic countries have failed to deliver for large segments of their populations. Deepening democracy can make governance truly responsive and accountable to the demands of ordinary people. This process requires the spread not only of democratic institutions but also of democratic politics. And in the interdependent world of the 21st century, democratic principles and practices must extend to international institutions and governance systems to address transnational issues--most notably, terrorism, globalization, and environmental decay. Human Development Report 2002: DT Examines the challenges for democracies young and old of broadening participation and strengthening accountability--or risking democratic reversals DT Calls for more democratic principles in global institutions and negotiating to prevent further fragmentation in the world DT Argues that democratic governance of security forces is the way to build capacity for peace DT Transcends the conventional wisdom of good governance to propose a framework that is not only efficient but also just, equitable, and conducive to human development DT Surveys the main tools for measuring political and civil freedoms and their relationship to the Report's human development index (HDI) DT Presents the first-ever country-by-country ratings on progress towards the Millennium Development Goals In addition, Human Development Report 2002 features contributions by Kofi Annan, Aung San Suu Kyi, Mohammad Khatami, Abdoulaye Wade, Jody Williams, and Bono.

Policies for development and growth in the Arab region must focus on freeing people from deprivation, in all its forms, and expanding their choices. Over the last five decades, remarkable progress has been achieved in advancing human development and reducing poverty. However, much still needs to be done to address the backlog of deprivation and imbalance. Since 1990, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has been providing (and Oxford University Press has been publishing) annual Human Development Reports that set out the basic social and economic indicators for the nations of the world. The Arab Human Development Report 2002, published this summer by the UNDP's Regional Bureau of Arab States (RBAS), is the first regional report of its kind. Focusing exclusively on the Arab world, the Report carefully dissects and analyzes the region's strengths and failings and explains why the region has fallen behind so much of the world. Written by a team of elite Arab intellectuals and policymakers, the Report concludes that the Arab world today is a civilization bypassed by global trade, democracy, technology, and by women's rights. Scrutinizing the 22 member states of the Arab League and their 280 million people, the Report argues that the root cause for Arab underdevelopment is threefold - three deficits: a deficit of freedom, a deficit of women's rights, and a deficit of knowledge. The Report probes the causes of these deficits and identifies three areas where Arab institutional structures are hindering performance and crippling human development: governance, women's empowerment, and knowledge.

A helpful examination of the entertainment business.......1999-05-05

As an attorney teaching an entertainment law course to undergraduates at the University of Notre Dame, I've found this text book to be very useful. Not only does it address and examine legal issues that face entertainment industry persons, it examines *how* the entertainment industries actually work. The vast majority of my students have found this book to be useful and worthwhile.

great for all interested in the history of our great state.......2000-01-06

I started reading this book for a paper I was writing in one of my history classes. I loved it so much that I constantly find myself referring to it in everyday conversations. It's not your typical history book. It is a collection of essays and interviews with people that lived during the thirties told from their own mouths in southern slang. Needless, to say it is hard to put it down once you start reading. Would be a great read for anyone interested in Alabama and/or the time period. I recommend to anyone and have even given out a few copies as gifts to people.
