3 out of 5 stars Some good points but..........2003-08-11

The book is often very general. It gives you a series of questions ie: do you want to work at a small/large organization? and then maybe a couple paragraphs that might help you understand which is best for you. I picked up this book already having a general idea of what kind of organization I want and what kind of work I want to do, so there was not much that was helpful. It did give me a few more things to consider

The book really seems most suited to people who have already identified a few potential workplaces and want to see if they really are a good match. It doesn't give much information on how to find companies or surprisingly, how to research workplaces beyond talking to current employees. For example, there's no mention of the various websites for researching workplaces, although it does list the general jobseeker websites (monster, careerbuilder, etc.)

It also does little to explore governmental or nonprofit work other than asking you to consider whether or not it is important for you to work at a place where your work helps others/changes the world. It didn't discuss any of the other real pros/cons to working in these sectors.

The book also is clearly geared towards good economic times with low unemployment. It states that the "competitive advantage has shifted to you, the worker" and "as we move, through this new century, those conditions [booming economy and a technological explosion] will only improve." Since this is obviously not true today due to very high Unemployment, this information left a bitter taste in my mouth. Anyway, a minor detail but it did annoy me.

I would only recommend this book for people just entering the workforce or those who really are uncertain about what direction they want to head in. Furthermore, I suggest you check this out from the library and save your money. I was able to scan the entire book and pick out the relevant bits in about two hours and it won't be a book I'll return to.

P.S. The book includes short blurbs about what the best companies are doing to make employees happy. They weren't very helpful but were interesting. It also gives you several worksheets to fill out, encouraging you to rate the factors that are important to you and to consider what you liked or didn't like at previous workplaces.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Effective International Joint Venture Management.......2000-11-10

Effective International Joint Venture Management by Dr. Ronald Charles Wolf, an American attorney resident decades in Lisbon, Portugal, has received joint acclaim from the academic world and from corporate entrepreneurs. It is a practical guide to all the essential steps required in the formation and management of an international joint venture. This explicit and lucid textbook is for all members of the international business community, lawyers, teachers and students. It is written in non-technical language but reviews thoroughly complex commercial, financial and legal topics. It is an indispensable guide for the international executives responsible for cross-border mergers and acquisitions and their advisors. Typical comments are:

"There has been a large amount written in the strategic management literature about when to set up an international joint venture (IJV), how to choose a partner, and how to manage the new venture. However, the legal aspects have not commanded great attention. Ronald Wolf remedies this oversight. His book is exhaustively detailed and deals in a very readable fashion with everything you need to know if you are contemplating an IJV. An invaluable addition to the library of the international businessman, and one not likely to gather dust," David Faulkner, Tutorial Fellow, Christ Church College, Oxford University.

"A truly useful guide to establishing and managing IJVs...[Wolf's book] has certainly enlarged the boundaries of my thinking on the subject and enriched the breadth of practical legal insights needed for executives and students," Associate Prof. Yadong, College of Business Administration, University of Hawaii.

"...[A] comprehensive guide to the complex business and legal issues of forming, governing, and even dissolving international joint ventures...Wolf offers pragmatic solutions in business-manager terms, which can be easily grasped and effectively executed...This book is recommended as an excellent step-by-step conceptual guide for those embarking on their first [international joint venture], as well as a solid reference on specific issues for the more experienced venturer," Patrick Tolbert, Executive Vice President, Chief Financial and Administrative Officer, LSG Sky Chefs, Inc.

"Effective International Joint Venture Management contains a wealth of practical information, highly pragmatic advice, and an easily followed road map. This book is an indispensable tool for the business executive who needs a concise guide to all matters affecting the formation and management of IJVs," Mark J. Bissell, President & CE0, Bissell, Inc.

      Book Description

This volume examines whether multinational corporations have obligations under international law and, if so, how they may be held accountable if they act in breach of these obligations. It concludes that multinational corporations indeed have such duties, particularly in the fields of human rights and the environment, and that they may be held accountable in both domestic courts and intergovernmental organisations.

The book first takes stock of the standard setting and supervisory activities regarding multinational corporations undertaken within international fora, such as UNCTAD, the UN Sub-Commission on Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities, the Conference establishing the International Criminal Court, and the OECD. It then continues to analyse the lawsuits alleging violations of international standards by multinational corporations that have been brought so far in the United States and the United Kingdom. It finishes by assessing the prospects for similar lawsuits in other countries, such as The Netherlands.

Contributions are by leading experts in this new field of international law, including attorneys acting on behalf of plaintiffs in Doe v. Unocal, Wiwa v. Royal Dutch Shell, and the cases against Cape plc, as well as experts involved in the creation of the sessional Working Group on Transnational Corporations of the UN Sub-Commission on Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities, the drafting of the Statute of the International Criminal Court and the revision of the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises. The book features the text of relevant international instruments, tables of statutes and cases, an extensive bibliography, and a subject index.

        Book Description

Regulatory Encounters reports on a path-breaking study of how government regulation of business in the United States differs in practice from regulation in other economically advanced democracies.
In each of ten in-depth case studies, the contributors to this volume compare a particular multinational corporation's experience with parallel regulatory regimes in the United States and in Japan, Canada, Great Britain, Germany, The Netherlands, and the European Union, noting precisely which regulatory precautions were actually implemented in each country. The regulatory systems analyzed include aspects of environmental protection, product safety, debt collection, employees' rights, and patent protection. The studies in Regulatory Encounters indicate that the adversarial and legalistic character of American regulation imposes higher costs and delays on economic activity than comparable regulatory regimes in other economically advanced democracies, and often does not generate higher levels of protection for the public.

From the supplier: The increasing globalization of business makes it necessary for corporate security managers to develop a good understanding of different cultures and business practices. They should take these differences into account when developing and implementing security programs for the organization's foreign operations. Attention should be given to such issues as risk assessment, travel preparations, local customs and law review, and language considerations.

                    Book Description

“A Rational Approach to Business Design” presents a rigorous and tested approach to business re-engineering. The author presents five tools, deemed an absolute minimum, that enables a consultant or manager to re-engineer companies in an objective and consistent manner. These tools are, process mapping, network diagrams, control diagrams, transformation diagrams and primal-dual matrix diagrams.

The book was written specifically for fully informed, practicing managers who know that there is a better way to run their business, but are not sure how to proceed or how to nurture consensus within their companies for this need.

The author's intention in writing this book was, to present the real hard stuff of business re-engineering, so that anyone can re-engineer their own business. It explains the, what and how of business re-engineering so that business re-engineers can be consistently successful in their projects.

The book starts off with a discussion of factory operations. Based on the author's work at Texas Instruments, the author demonstrates that both push and pull systems are equivalent. This is major departure from current thought in both operations management and business re-engineering.

Given this equivalency, several inferences and questions come to mind. First, if they are equivalent how can companies gain a competitive advantage by switching from push to pull? They can't! The answer lies in understanding planning complexity. One of many new concepts explained in this book. The second, is there a kanban system for push system? Yes! It is detailed in the book.

The third, with push and pull equivalence, why then does Just-In-Time work? JIT de-couples the production-scheduling problem into many smaller problems that can be `transparently' solved in real time. The author proceeds to explain that scale economy is a function of wip management systems and lot-to-machine assignment systems.

The book clearly explains how to use transformation diagrams to map the logic of the business. There is no guessing or fuzziness. There are only an even number of key success factors, usually 2 rarely 4; and it is “commitment” that determines these factors.

The author presents a radically new approach to business strategy. The Holistic Business Model consists of the Operations Layer, Revenue Transaction Layer and Business Management Layer.

Porter's five forces model is based on the premise that businesses use strategy to respond to competitive forces. The Holistic Business Model, however, shows how business design determines business structure; business structure in turn determines the competitive forces. That is, on the one hand design determines forces and on the other, strategy is used to manage competitive forces. Management will find this significantly more empowering than current strategy models.

The book shows how to map the logic of the business, industry rivalry, and one's business strategies to evaluate strategy (not financial) sensitivity analysis. This sensitivity analysis, enables one to determine how sensitive one's strategies are to price wars, new entrants and the economy.

Unlike other business strategy models, the Holistic Business Model enables one to infer your competitor's strategic options from public information. The upshot of this is that the Game of Business is now one, where every player knows the others' hand!

In the spring of 1999, following a series of programs devoted to losing weight, Good Morning America ran a Cut the Calories Cook-off. Over 1,100 viewers of this popular TV show submitted recipes for either an entree or a dessert. The resulting cookbook features 120 recipes, including a few contributed by chefs Emeril Lagasse and Sara Moulton. Dishes include the 50 semifinalist recipes, plus others considered delicious by judges Lagasse, Moulton, Wolfgang Puck, and Michael Lomonaco of Windows on the World in New York City.

The grand-prize winners? Oven Fried Chicken with Andouille Sausage and Caramel Cheesecake with Praline Sauce. The chicken's crunch comes from crispy rice cereal and this all-American dish is seasoned with Parmesan cheese and cumin. The conquering cheesecake, a snap to make, is accompanied by a creamy sauce studded with pecans. The recipes, overall, reflect America's broadening taste for spicy foods and national acceptance of ethnic ingredients, with dishes calling for chili peppers--chipotles, anchos, green, even red jalapeños--and Chinese hoisin sauce, Italian balsamic vinegar, and Cajun Andouille sausage.

Cheesecake is truly a favorite American dessert, with six recipes for it in this book. A cook from Oregon even managed to slim down one with a chocolate crust, chocolate filling, and hazelnut topping. Fruit desserts are well represented, too. Most remarkable is Sweet Nachos featuring cinnamon-sprinkled, crisped tortillas topped with a luscious, warm raspberry "salsa" and creamy topping.

With so many Americans needing to slim down, this book should be a big winner, thanks to its easy and alluring recipes. --Dana Jacobi

                    3 out of 5 stars A little Disappointed.......2003-04-16

An OK cookbook. There are others I liked much better. All the Weight Watcher cookbooks for example. Most likely I will only cook only a few of the recipes in this cookbook.

                    5 out of 5 stars Yum........2001-04-07

I'm a huge cooking fan. I'm a huge food fan. And I'm a huge Sara Moulton fan.

So I almost fell over when I saw that not only was Ms. Moulton editing a cookbook, but she was going to be at a booksigning in my town. But I digress.

There I got to try a few of the cookies that were in the book, which was nice. As soon as I got home, I made the lemon meringue cookies, which I still make @ least weekly - they're incredibly easy, really really good, and low cal. Does it get any better?

Also, I enjoyed reading this cookbook. It was interesting to read about the people who submitted their recipes, as well as the stories behind them. All in all, a very good find.

5 out of 5 stars Good Morning America the Calories Cookbook.......2001-01-24

So another year another time at attempting to eat right. I saw Good Morning America when Sara was tempting Charlie and Diane with the different dishes. So I thought I would give the book a shot. It is the absolute best cookbook I have. My kids and my husband love the food that I have made so far. I am dropping the pounds and we are all eating healthier. Most important rule of this cookbook was that the food had to taste good. Try the grand prize winner Chicken and Andouille Sausage it is the best.

As co-editor of THE GOOD MORNING AMERICA CUT THE CALORIES COOKBOOK, I'd just like to say that Sara Moulton is a joy to work with, the consumate professional-- knowledgeable, decisive, cooperative and upbeat always. She hopes to be writing her own cookbook soon-- look for it a couple years down the line. Meanwhile, please check out two books of my own (which, incidentally, are two of Sara's favorites): THE NEW DOUBLEDAY COOKBOOK (big and basic) and THE AMERICAN CENTURY COOKBOOK (a culinary nostalgia trip through the 20th century with more than 500 of that century's most beloved recipes). jean anderson

5 out of 5 stars She cooks for everyone...........2000-04-24

Sara Molton is a cook for everyone. She breaks it all down, and makes it so easy for an average person to get into the kitchen and create. She's wonderfully talented and such a great people person. Her receipes are fun, healthy and really easy to follow. And, she knows that average people want to make healthy receipes that are tasty too. She's a great resource and her TV shows on the FOODNetwork, are top notch. I recommend this book for everyone that loves to cook, and for those just starting out.
