5 out of 5 stars A wonderful primer on starting a business with contact information for locating startup funds if necessary........2006-09-03

This is a valuable book (resource) for budding entrepreneurs. It seems to try to cover all the bases for starting a small business, but it can't do them all well in the space available between its covers. The book is only 288 pages long. If you are in the planning stages of starting a small business, then I highly recommend you get a copy of this book. Read it, study it, and outline it. There are helpful checklists to help you grasp the subjects. You will come up with a plethora of keywords and terms that you will want to google to find Web pages giving more detailed (and maybe more current) information.

I am a SCORE counselor (Senior Corps of Retired Executives) who typically does face-to-face counseling sessions three nights a month. It would really be neat if my clients would read this book BEFORE they came to their session with me because they would pretty much be "educated customers" ready to ask educated questions. Our sessions would be so much more beneficial.

My favorite chapters were:

1. Initial business concerns
2. Your business' structure
3. Business start-up details
5. Sources of business assistance (SCORE is mentioned here)
7. Your smart business plan (and a good sample plan is included)
8. Obtaining the financing you need

The book is weak when it comes to how the Internet can be used in corresponding, hiring, and marketing. But this is just one example of how googling keywords and concepts found in the book will make the book more complete. Don't treat the book as authoritative on the law. It isn't. Nor was it ever intended to be. It is light on tax information as it relates to small business.

I was particularly impressed with the material presented in Chapter 2: Choice of Legal Entity. That subject is sorely ignored in most small business books, and it is critically important. It is a subject I regularly must spend a great deal of time discussing at my SCORE sessions. This book does a pretty good job on the topic.

Chapters 4 and 9 through 12 are easy to find fault with. The topic of each could fill a book. But having these topics covered definitely will help a budding entrepreneur know some of the issues they raise.

I would have liked the book more if Chapter 6 (marketing) had been less superficial. When I read it I got the impression that the author was more a public relations expert than a marketing expert. I generally categorize public relations as a subset of marketing. Marketing includes advertising, public relations, and a whole host of other promotion techniques. I did not get this message when I read the book. I also would have liked the book better if the Internet, email, and Web sites had been discussed more. But there are many books on those subjects. Therefore, I can't complain too much about the limited discussion of computers.

When you read this book it may feel a little like it was produced on an assembly line. Maybe it was? There are 50 versions of this book sold; the only state I haven't found a copy for is Montana. Content is king, and this book has it. 5 stars!

2 out of 5 stars Lightweight: maybe a good overview, but missing details.......2004-08-11

How to Start a Business in Texas includes chapters on initial business considerations, business structure, licensing/permits/taxes, employer responsibilities, sources of business assistance, marketing, business plan, obtaining financing, finance & accounting, human resources management, insurance, setting up your office, and info on Texas. In most cases the info was Texas specific but at times it was not (e.g. "Many states have repealed their bulk sales law ... consult your secretary of state or attorney.") The chapter on business structures was 18 pages. It was pretty light on tax information and did not include any sample forms for incorporating, nor did it include a sample operating agreement for an LLC. I also thought the tax information for an LLC was confusing. The summary states that the profits and losses pass through the LLC to the owners for tax purposes. Later the author states, (paraphrasing) Even though the IRS has ruled the LLC will qualify as a partnership for tax purposes, Congress has yet to pass any legislation to that effect. A 1997 IRS decision allows sole proprietorships to convert to LLC status. "This "check-the-box" legislation allows LLC's to be treated as corporations or partnerships for tax purposes." The chapter on setting up your office failed to provide any information on tax deductions. The marketing chapter has one paragraph on using the internet to market your business, so don't expect anything useful on setting up a web site. The chapter on insurance doesn't discuss errors and omissions insurance and basically states that a discussion of liability insurance is either beyond the scope of this book or you should consult your insurance agent. The chapter on accounting and finance is very lightweight.

2 out of 5 stars Not A Serious Source of Knowledge.......2004-12-10

If you're even moderately aware of the basics of business, such as what you would learn getting an undergraduate degree in business (or maybe in just one or two courses), then this book won't tell you anything you don't already know. It spends a lot of time listing basic terms and defining them. By basic, I mean mentioning that a sole proprietorship is a business run by an individual. I was done with it in 20 minutes and I don't consider myself anywhere close to an expert on the subject.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for starting a Texas business.......2003-04-22

If you're thinking about starting a business in Texas, this book is perfect for you. It covers general issues like what type of business should you start (Sole Proprietorship, Corporation, etc.), Insurance, Employment and Labor Laws, and most importantly specific issues associated with Texas. For instance, Texas requires Franchise Tax be paid by all corporations and Limited Liability Companies. Texas also requires a Sales and Use Tax form be completed for any business selling taxable items (tangible and intangible property). I have read the other book "How to Incorporate and Start a Business in Texas" but it is more focused on the legal rammifications of corporations and not on specific Texas related issues. It is also good, but I recommend this book because it covers basically everything. Great reference manual.

              Book Description

This book investigates the relationships between education and national development in an area of the world where both have acquired considerable importance. It questions assumptions which view education primarily as a direct investment in human capital and approaches which measure the efficacy of educational provision solely in terms of quantifiable differences between inputs and outputs. Unlike most of the more general works in this field, it does not set out either to confirm or to refute a particular theory. Instead, the main perspectives which have been adopted to explain the role of education in development are explored. The role of education in the development of eight societies in East Asia, including Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, South Korea, Malaysia, Macau, and the People's Republic of China, is examined. These societies are compared in order to highlight the diverse and complex role played by education in their development.

                  Book Description

This book brings together for the first time the most current research about the academic effects and policy implications of the school reform known as parental choice. The topic of choice in education is discussed in terms of why, when, where and how, if at all, it should be implemented. The contents are fourteen original papers written by scholars from Israel, UK, the United States and Canada and brings together the empirical studies of school choice examined in an international context.

                    Book Description

The theme of this issue is international buyer behavior. The papers collected in this volume contribute to theory development and contain important implications for managers and policy makers. With chapters written by leading marketing scholars from around the world, including current and/or former Presidents of the American Academy of Advertising, the European Academy of Advertising, and the Korea Advertising Society, this volume focuses on cutting edge issues that affect buyer behavior in an international context.

The first of the four sections of the book focuses on a controversial topic: the impact of direct to consumer prescription drug advertising on consumers. Next is a group of papers that looks at the role of emotions in advertising and retailing contexts and their impact on buyers. The third section of the book examines cultural factors as they pertain to buyer behavior in multiple contexts, including explaining apparently paradoxical buyer behavior among Koreans and examining drivers of satisfaction with industrial goods across markets. The final set of chapters examines a truly hot topic in international buyer behavior research: interactive marketing in international contexts. Papers in these chapters examine current issues such as developing loyalty to on-line communities, reactions to mobile gaming and banner advertisements, and cross-national differences in website structure.

                        Book Description

Switzerland is universally respected for its highly successful economy. It has long enjoyed low unemployment and inflation, and an exceptionally satisfactory transition process for youngsters from school to work. This book provides a nuts-and-bolts comparison of how this successful transition is brought about. It explains the different emphases of Swiss secondary schooling by focusing on the way in which both academic and practical subjects are taught. The different ways in which career guidance and intervals of work experience are handled in the two countries are also considered.

                          Book Description

Traditionally, government bureaucracies have been the source of public policy initiatives and recommendations, but today the growing challenges to governance-more complex issues, the demands of civil society, and the changing nature of representative government, in particular-have made alternative or nongovernmental sources increasingly important if not essential.

In this volume, experts from Brazil, Germany, India, Japan, South Korea, Poland, the United Kingdom, and the United States offer a comparative assessment of the state of policy advice from such alternative sources as independent "scholarly" think tanks, interest and advocacy centers, party think tanks, blue ribbon commissions, and legislative support organizations. Authors survey the availability and adequacy of these alternative sources of advice and offer specific recommendations for how to improve the quality of the advice.

Once known as the Queen-of-Incapable Cooking, Brook has been spotted securing saran wrap with sailor knots, baking a cherry pie without pitting the cherries and coloring unboiled Easter eggs. Frustrated with the lack of a family dinner hour in her home (her husband had opted for large lunches at work), she set out to create a cooking system (much to her husband's dismay) that would allow her to put great meals on the table quickly.
A CEO, mom, wife, daughter, volunteer, church-goer, author and speaker, Brook's time is at a premium.
Brook created simply stellar meals and menus for everyday enjoyment. Now, for the first time, Brooks first four "Rush Hour Pocket Series" cookbooks are available all in one volume. Within these pages you'll find Presto Pasta, Effortless Entertaining, One-Pot Wonders, and Family Favorites. Enjoy over 200 simple, quick and easy dishes.

This is a book of fast recipes, many depending on canned soups and convenience foods like frozen hash browns. They are "kid tested" meaning if your offspring are tending to dine on chicken fingers and hamburgers as the exclusive source of their nourishment, they probably will spoon up some of these dishes, too.

Recipes include Noodle Bake, Strogonoff Supper, Pizza Pockets and Mexican Casserole This last I had to check out because at work, we have a war-word for bad food at the headquarters and it's (whisper it) Mexican Lasagna. This atrocity was perpetrated on us last April and consists of tortillas and taco meat posing as lasagna, Wrong, wrong wrong. Mexi-Casserole here, however, is elbow mac and taco-seasoned hamburger. In other words, Chili Mac. You are safe serving this to anyone, probably, except gourmands and vegetarians. Desserts are cinnamon baked apples, banana cream pie, no bake peanut butter choco squares and the alluringly if bad-for-you-sounding Snickers Salad

The organization of ths book leaves a lot to be desired, but if you know a young mom who is overwhelmed by the kitchen or someone who inherited the job of cooking for a herd, this is a great book gift.
