5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Information!.......2003-06-08

After receiving an early-retirement offer from my employer, I diligently went about reviewing my options. I was not sure whether to take a company annuity or a lump sum from my pension fund. I was not certain about how to handle my 401k. In defense of my company, they offered informational seminars however the best information has been this book. I would recommend, actually I would highly recommend this book for any employee thinking about changing jobs or retiring. This is a great-easy to read resource.

Don't Get Caught With Your Pants Down is survival guide, true to form. With all of the teacher layoffs in California supposedly looming on the horizon, I definitely recommend it for all who could be affected and or already have been affected by a layoff. This book is perfect for currently employed who want to get a jump on retirement and for those who would like to learn about investing and how to do it properly; god, it is such a great book, with so many uses I could talk about them all day but unfortunately I have to sum it up in 1000 words or less. Bottom line, read it, use it and don't get caught with your pants down, I didnt!!!

I haven't let this book stray too far from my side since my employer (major airline) offered me an early retirement. Very helpful!

5 out of 5 stars Great info!.......2003-01-29

The cover and title of this book are certainly reflective of its contents. No fluff straight to the point. When I put this book down, I came away with the feeling, "everything is going to be okay"!The author provides some great commentary as to "why" employees do not have the same job security our grandparents enjoyed. I would say this book was written for the average person looking for general information about Rollover IRA's, good/bad retirement investments, wills and trusts etc. Alternate publications may be more appropriate if you need complex estate or retirement planning strategies. Bottom line: My stomach was not in knots after reading this book. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Buy this Book!.......2003-01-29

Don't Get Caught With Your Pants Down is a wonderful crash course for the layman on investments, long-term health care insurance, wills, trusts and IRA's. I enjoyed the tips on selecting an investment advisor and how to determine the fees you really pay to have a bank, brokerage firm, or mutual fund company when they assist you with your affairs. Other books I have read about investments & retirement tend to be real yawners, not this one! This book answered all my questions. As a bonus it is filled with some great one-liners, and is a pleasure to read. Buy it!

Through prose, pictures and poems, this book gives one the "feel" of truely being a North Carolinian. Even if you have never visited the state, you can laugh, cry and dream as Charles Kuralt paints picture words of his home. A lovely relaxing read.

Book Description

In the twentieth century, industrialization transformed the Piedmont Carolinas from a poor, largely agricultural and backward region into one of the most vibrant and attractive areas of the nation. While many things played a part in this transformation, one indisputable factor was a reliable and economical source of electricity as provided after 1904 by what became Duke Power Company.

This book covers the history of Duke Power from its foundation up to 1997. Unlike most of the investor-owned electric utilities in the United States, which were controlled by giant holding companies or investment banks, the Duke Power company was financed largely by a local family, the Dukes of Durham, who had made their fortune in tobacco and textiles before turning to the electric-power business in the early 1900s. J.B. Duke speculated that development of hydroelectric power would draw business industries such as textiles to the rural South and reinvigorate its economy. His power company did that and more, lasting through the struggles during utilities regulation and labor organization, harnessing of nuclear power, continuing to diversify its operations into the 1990s. Robert F. Durden has chronicled Duke Power's contributions to the rich economic diversity of North and South Carolina and its effect on the people for whom it has provided power for almost 100 years.

This, then, is the story of a distinctive electric utility that early on took and held a leading place among the investor-owned utilities of the nation and its effects on the economic life of the Carolinas.

3 out of 5 stars A bit scholarly...........2007-09-10

Lots of data, but perhaps too much. The book did an OK job of giving the history of the Duke Power Company, but leaned, in my opinion, a little too heavily on stats from the annual reports. It made for dry reading from time to time.

I would be interested in seeing a follow-up from 1997-2007.

For a piece of this puzzle, check out "Continental Reach: The Westcoast Energy Story" by Peter C. Newman. Duke acquired Westcoast in 2001.

5 out of 5 stars Engrossing, unique, comprehensive, and "reader friendly".......2001-10-14

Robert Durden's Electrifying The Piedmont Carolinas: The Duke Power Company, 1904-1997 is the inside story of how industrialization in the form of the Duke Power Company changed the Piedmont Carolinas from a poverty-stricken land into a popular and economically successful place. One J. B. Duke speculated that hydroelectric power would bring textile industries to the rural south and recharge the local economy; the rest is economic history. Electrifying The Piedmont Carolinas is an engrossing, unique, comprehensive, "reader friendly", and highly recommended regional American history that spans nearly all of the 20th century.

          Book Description

An annotated listing of everything published by the University of North Carolina Press since its founding in 1922, this new edition of Books from Chapel Hill will be a valuable reference tool for scholars, bibliographers, librarians, book dealers, and bibliophiles.

Two previous editions of Books from Chapel Hill have been published, the first on the occasion of the Press's twenty-fifth anniversary and the second, on its fiftieth. Like its predecessors, this edition includes, in a comprehensive list arranged by author, brief descriptions and complete bibliographic information for the more than 3,000 books that have been published by the Press. The book also includes a full title listing, an expanded subject listing, a list of series, and a list of major awards received since 1969. The volume opens with essays by former directors William T. Couch, Lambert Davis, and Matthew Hodgson, that, taken together, present a brief history of the Press.

A publisher's booklist tells its history. Here, readers will find evidence of the Press's early commitment to publishing on race relations, its contributions to regional publishing, its continuing strengths as a publisher of some of the best books on southern and early American history, and its more recent interest in gender studies and cultural history. More than just a catalog, this book documents the tradition and achievements of the University of North Carolina Press.

              Book Description

Peter Erspamer explores the 'Jewish question' in German literature from Lessing's Nathan der Weise in 1779 to Sessa's Unser Verkehr in 1815. He analyzes the transition from an enlightened emancipatory literature advocating tolerance in the late eighteenth century to an anti-Semitic literature with nationalistic overtones in the early nineteenth century.

Erspamer examines Nathan in light of Lessing's attempts to distance himself from the excesses of his own Christian in-group through pariah identification, using an idealized member of an out-group religion as a vehicle to attack the dominant religion. He also focuses on other leading advocates of tolerance and explores changes in Jewish identity, particularly the division of German Jewry into orthodox Jews, adherents of the Haskalah, and converted Jews. The tolerance discourse ended with the Napoleonic incursions into Germany, when nationalism was on the rise and Judaism came to be viewed in racial as well as religious terms.

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Professor David Murphy's Review from German Studies Review.......2000-06-20

Peter R. Erspamer, The Elusiveness of Tolerance: The "Jewish Question" from Lessing to the Napoleonic Wars, reviewed by Dr. David T. Murphy, Professor of History at Anderson University, in German Studies Review, Vol. XXII, No. 1, pp. 116-117

The title of Peter Erspamer's study of early German literature concerning what became known as the "Jewish question" is well chosen, in two ways: Not only have the goals of legal toleration and cultural acceptance for eligious and ethnic minorities in Germany and the West proven elusive, but, as this study makes abundantly clear, agreement upon the meaning of the term "tolerance" itself has turned out to be equally difficult to attain. In Germany during the Enlightenment and Revolutionary eras, for example, "tolerance" could and did signify a range of meanings. While the term evoked a narrowly conceived sense of permission or "sufferance of evil" to some, for a smaller group of others it suggested a much broader notion of freedom of convictions.

Erspamer's revised dissertation provides a competent introduction to the early decades of the literary debate over the proper status of Jews in Germany. Taking as his starting point Lessing's Nathan the Wise of 1779, a work whose impact upon public understanding of the struggle for Jewish rights led George Mosse to describe it as the "Magna Carta" of German Jewry, Erspamer follows the reactions which Lessing's philo-Semitic drama provoked among a number of German audiences over the next several decades. The author gives particular attention to the views of Prussian officialdom, as expressed in the writings of Christian Wilhelm Dohm, the responses of Germany's various Jewish communities themselves, the emergence of a short-lived school of emancipatory drama and of course, the beginnings of the more enduring anti-Semitic backlash against the drive for emancipation.

Among the strengths of this monograph is its insightful attention to nuance in the response of Germany's Jews to the public debate about emancipation as it was carried on both within the Jewish community and in the larger Gentile culture. Contrary to widespread Christian perceptions, German Jewry of the period constituted a highly fragmented and heterogeneous group, embracing the reform-oriented Maskilim of the Jewish Enlightenment, the considerable community of "Taufjuden", or converted Jews, and the German orthodox community. The diversity of Judaism conditioned a wide range of responses to the drive for emancipation, from the almost Deistic Judaism of Moses Mendelssohn, the most famous Jewish proponent of emancipation, to the involved struggle toward self-identity of the remarkable converted Jew Rahel Varnhagen.

Erspamer also does a nice job of explicating the emerging anti-Semitic ideology which began to be elaborated in response to demands for Jewish emancipation. At this time, the remarkably durable Judeophobic religious prejudices of the Middle Ages began to merge with the clearly racial anti-Semitism of theorists such as Ernst Moritz Arnt, crystallizing and then disseminating what Erspamer describes as popular "myths of ethnic homogeneity." The author's understanding of the paradoxical ideological appeal of anti-Semitism as both the tool of an authoritarian state as well as a form of political expression of an oppressed people is perceptive.

While this work is well edited in regard to technical matters, it is burdened by a few stylistic shortcomings, including unnecessary repition of key concepts and sometimes of almost complete sentences in the early portions of the book. Clumsy neologisms like "dialecticizing" also crop up occasionally, though that is perhaps unavoidable in a contemporary work of literary criticism. Taken as a whole, however, this is a study whose virtues considerably outweigh its defects and which provides valuable insight into the dynamics of the evolution of ideas.

5 out of 5 stars Professor Erlis Wickerham's Review from Choice.......2000-06-20

The Elusiveness of Tolerance: The "Jewish Question" from Lessing to the Napoleonic Wars, by Peter R. Erspamer, reviewed by Erlis G. Wickersham, Professor of German at Rosemont College, in: Choice, July/August 1997--Vol. 34, No. 11/12, pp. 182-83

In this interesting, well-conceived study, Erspamer considers the tolerance debate in Germany and Austria from the publication of Gotthold Ephraim Lessing's Nathan the Wise (1779) to the end of the Napoleonic era. Erspamer makes excellent use of sources, presenting a balance of documents for and against the Enlightenment ideal promulgated by Lessing and influenced by the leading figure of the Haskalah: Moses Mendelssohn. He discusses both authors in fresh, insightful ways, while providing a balanced view of historical criticism. He analyzes pamphlets engendered by Lessing's book from writers like Pfranger, Dohm, Ascher, and Diez, and dramas with Jewish themes by writers like Reinicke, Bischof, Lotich, and Ziegelhauser. In such chapters as "Emancipatory Drama after Lessing" and "Myths of Homogeneity: Anti-Semitic Literature after 1800," he traces the devastating effects of nationalistic sentiments inspired by the Wars of Liberation. He illuminates the polemics of antisemitic Romantics like Achim von Arnim and Fichte, using well-chosen quotations in German. Despite quirks of style, Erspamer provides an integrated view of a seminal era for German-Jewish relations, needed materials, and valuable insights. Extensive bibliography, notes, and index. Recommended for all collections.

Book is true of facts and shows the true Abraham Lincoln. One of the best books on honest Abe. Takes you back to a time long passed and puts you in the mind of one of the true patriots of America.

5 out of 5 stars The True Story.......2005-06-19

I had long wanted to own a hardcover edition of Herndon's famous book on Abraham Lincoln and the purchase of this one by Digital Scanning, Inc. fulfilled my desire perfectly.

Everyone with a serious interest in Mr. Lincoln's life should read this book. Originally published in 1888, it is one of the main starting points for all subsequent works devoted to understanding this complex man. It remains a great book for reading after all of these years.

5 out of 5 stars REVIEW OF WILLIAM H. HERNDON'S LINCOLN BY JOHN CHUCKMAN.......2005-02-25

With a certain group of American historians, largely those concerned with preserving images of America's founders and luminaries as saintly figures in white plaster togas, this book remains controversial.

In fact, it is perhaps the greatest biography of an American historical figure ever written. It is recommended highly to all lovers of good biography. It is indispensible to serious students of American history.

The official defenders of America's Civic Religion dislike this book because it captures some raw and awkward aspects of Lincoln, but Lincoln was rather raw and awkward and self-taught. It is the rise of such a man to such heights, plus his great natural eloquence, that make Lincoln remarkable.

Such historians love to cite this or that relatively insignificant error (in a 500-page book replete with details) to discredit Herndon, but Herndon's own detail and sense of honesty make him the best argument against such foolishness.

No one was better qualified than Herndon to record the life of Lincoln, having been his friend and business partner for many years. Herndon also conscientiously compiled a large archive of letters and memorials after Lincoln's death.

Herndon focuses on the personal Lincoln, and it is especially his observations about Lincoln's religious skepticism and family life that so disturb those who would have Lincoln embalmed like Lenin. Herndon gives us a vivid Lincoln, and if you like good biography, you will be impressed. The book was clearly a labor of love, and that fact still comes through more than a century after it was written.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting Perspective of Lincoln.......2002-10-25

You know its funny to be writing a review about a book that was written so long ago, but I think this review may help encourage others who haven't already been acquainted with this wonderful book to take a look at it. It offers a very human view of Lincoln before he became the president of the United States. I agree with the fact that it doesn't reveal a lot about the civil war, but you know what, that was the authors intention. William Herndon, Lincoln's Law partner for about 20 years, knew that other people were going to focus on the war years far better than he could (Like John Hay and John Nicolay who worked for Lincoln in the White House) therefore, his focus is to reveal Lincoln as he was as a young man, but mostly during his years living in springfield, illinois. Its really quite entertaining, and at times comical to read how quirky he was back in those days. Sure, Herndon has been criticized about his biography over the past 100 plus years its been out in circulation, particularly his whole take on the Ann Rutledge affair and attitude on Mary Todd Lincoln. Regardless of that, I think he honestly attempts to provide an accurate portrayal of Lincoln without holding back any details. He wants to reveal Lincoln the way he viewed the man through his own eyes--as an ordinary man who had faults like anybody else--who went through tough, turbulent, and dark times--had a sense of humor--had insecurities--but in the end remained an honest to goodness human being who struggled to make his mark in this world. Trust me folks, this is a fascinating read. You will have a difficult time trying to stop reading.

5 out of 5 stars One and Only.......2002-10-07

There are, it is said, more books about Lincoln than there are about anybody but Jesus. Every man setting out to write about Lincoln has an idea of him, a shadow to look for Lincoln in and the huge weight of tradition and history on his back while writing. Even Nicolay and Hay, his secretaries, and authors of the voluminous collected papers which are probably the best source on the Presidency, only knew the man in office, once he had enfolded himself, if you will, inside his great ambition. Herndon knew the man. He shared his office with him, a law practise which consisted of Lincoln throwing the case notes and money into his hat before putting it on to his head, and splitting all the money down the middle. Herndon also went around talking to everyone who knew Lincoln while he was alive before they died.

There are flaws to this book. Herndon drank, so Lincoln didn't take him to Washington with him. This book tells you nothing about the war, about Lincoln's policies, or even a great deal about Lincoln's debates with Douglas, say. But. And it is a great but. This is the only book that gives you a smell of the goofy, tall, funny, awkward, galumphing and generally likeable oddball that emerged as the greatest leader this country ever had. This is the only book I would advise an actor to read if he was going to undertake to play Abe Lincoln. All the other books describe a monument. This one describes a man who went on dates, told dirty jokes and had a funny way of laying his legs across the desk and reading upside down. The rest is second hand.

                                Book Description

Volume 14 of the Australian Dictionary of Biography, the second of four volumes to deal with the 1940-1980 period, records the lives of Australians whom many of us will remember from the recent past. It reflects the changes and constants in Australia's demographic composition and social values in the years of World War II and its aftermath. A range of biographies illuminates large themes in Australia's recent history, themes such as immigration, accelerating industrialism, urbanization and suburbanization, war, material progress, increasing cultural maturity, conservative and radical politics, conflict and harmony, and the loss of isolation and innocence. It also reveals something of the greatness and the littleness of which human beings are capable.

Since 1966, the Australian Dictionary of Biography has provided concise, informative, and fascinating descriptions of prominent men and women who contributed their vision and energies to a growing nation. The subjects come from all walks of life--from premiers, generals, and bishops, through artists, actors, authors, farmers, engineers, and schoolteachers, to prostitutes, bushrangers, and murderers--providing a representative cross-section of Australian society. While biography necessarily focuses on the individual, the sweeping range of these personal stories illuminates large themes in Australia's recent history, including immigration, rapid industrialization, urbanization and suburbanization, war (WWII, Korea, Malaysia, and Vietnam), material progress, conservative and radical politics, and the loss of isolation and innocence. Maintaining the ADB's tradition of scholarship, this volume covers the period 1940-1980, from Pik-Z.
