A dictionary like none other.......2001-11-19

I have used many Spanish-English legal dictionaries, but never have I found a book as useful as this one. Unlike the others, this dictionary includes explanations of many of the terms. If you're trying to figure what the difference is between an "embargo" and "secuestro," this book will explain it to you. If you're translating a "sentencia," you can look up that word in this dictionary, and it tells you about the four parts of a "sentencia" in a Spanish-speaking country. The other thing that is completely different about this book is that it contains terms from Guatemala, Peru, El Salvador, Bolivia, Chile, etc.--in other words, terms from all the countries that a dictionary from Argentina is not going to include (because they don't turn up in Argentine documents). In short, if I could only have ONE Spanish-English legal dictionary, this would be it!

An Excellent Resource for Translating Spanish Legal Document.......2001-06-27

Tom West brings his expertise as a translator and attorney together to produce this excellent resource. Focussing on difficult legal and commercial terminology, his translations are accurate and correspond to actual usage among the U.S. legal community. I have found this dictionary particularly useful for translating jurisprudence and court decisions from Spanish to English. Mr. West identifies several country-specific terms. In addition, he often includes information on the type of context in which a term is used and/or gives an explanation of the legal concept behind the term. For example, the dictionary explains the difference between "good offices" and "mediation." So if you're trying to understand what a "decreto exento" means in Chile or what the term "decretar pruebas" means in Colombia, or if you're looking for a way to say "casación" in English and make sense to an American lawyer, this is the book that has the answers. Mr. West's dictionary is designed as a supplementary reference work for high-level, experienced legal translators in the Spanish to English combination. If you fit that category, his book is a real treasure.

A waste of your money.......2001-01-26

This book is most useful if you are only looking to translate Spanish to English (about 225 pages). But do not get this book if you need English to Spanish translations (about 70 pages). This section is very limited. And I mean VERY limited. Most of the legal terms, even the most basic ones, weren't there, and I did find them in my regular English/Spanish dictionary.

I wish I had read the review from St. George before purchasing it. But I got this book a while ago, and after repeated, frustraing times looking up words I decided to go ahead and write a review.

A very limited Spanish / English Dictionary.......2000-04-15

As you will note from the reviews that follow, this is a good Spanish - English Dictionary IF YOU ARE TRANSLATING FROM SPANISH INTO ENGLISH; it is not so good if you are translating from English to Spanish. Being a lawyer who speaks Spanish, I occasionaly have Spanish clients, and I need to come up with a Spanish word for a legal term I am aware of in English. I read the other reviews before purchasing this Spanish-English dictionary. I, finally, put forth the $75 to purchase it. When I received it, I decided to look up the Spanish word for "Judge" - to see if I was using the right term (is it "Juez" or "Juzgado"). I turned to the page for "J" and, low and behold, THERE WAS NO WORD FOR "JUDGE"! IT WASN'T EVEN LISTED! I turned to the Spanish section and found "Juez" - which was listed as "Judge"; also, I found "Juzgador" - which was listed as "Judge." (I discovered that "Jugado" is "Court" - rather than "Judge" as I had presumed.) I realized that this book wasn't going to work for me - having to translate FROM English INTO Spanish. On the other hand, I recently had to translate a Spanish Adoption record into English. There were Spanish legal phrases which, after several hours of using my regular (Non-legal) Spanish/English dictionary, I was able to deduce the equivilant legal phrases in English. Well, this dictionary probably would have been useful. As the author notes in his preface: "Because my research focused on Spanish-language materials, my original intent had been not to include an English-to-Spanish section at all." He, then, notes that he decided to include a (VERY LIMITED and relatively small) English-to-Spanish section. So, if you are translating FROM Spanish INTO English, this dictionary will probably be useful; however, if you are trying to translate FROM English INTO Spanish, I suggest you try another Spanish/English Dictionary. (I'll probably return this one and get my $75 back.)

A desktop companion for transnational practice.......1999-11-10

Mr. West's Spanish-English Dictionary of Law and Business lives up to the promise on the dust jacket. It IS a must for any lawyer or translator who works with legal and business documents in Spanish. In carefully chosen entries and bracketed explanatory notes Mr. West anticipates potential snares in usage and cultural anomalies-between civil and common law and among civil law jurisdictions. Having tested it in my transnational practice in Mexico, I found it a more current reference than my dog-eared Sell's COMPREHENSIVE SPECIALIST'S DICTIONARY (1957) and more thorough than any of my Spanish-English legal dictionaries that are still in print. It beat out Robb's DICCIONARIO DE TÉRMINOS LEGALES (1991) for the spot on my credenza between and the DICCIONARIO JURÍDICO MEXICANO (1992) and my Bryan A. Garner collection.

Charles G. Dahlgren came from a family that played a prominent role in the effort to preserve the Union. His older brother, John, was a rear admiral in the U.S. Navy and enjoyed a measure of fame for inventing naval guns. In 1864, John's son, Col. Ulric Dahlgren, died in a Union cavalry raid against Richmond. Charles's other brother, William, spent part of the war in England spying on Confederate purchasing agents. In ironic contrast, Charles's compelling story evolves within the hierarchy of Southern aristocracy.

Herschel Gower eloquently traces the rise of Charles to social prominence in the South. As a young man, Charles became a protégé of Nicholas Biddle, the prominent Philadelphia financier, who dispatched him to the cotton states to look after his interests. Ambitious and in search of wealth and position, Charles established himself in Natchez, Mississippi, married an heiress, started a family, and prospered. When Mississippi seceded from the Union, he stood in defense of his cotton plantations, his ownership of slaves, and his hard-won security. In July 1861, the governor of Mississippi appointed him brigadier general of volunteers. Under criticism, he resigned the post and took an advisory position overseeing gunboat construction. Charles's fortune evaporated with the fall of the Confederacy, and his family suffered severely. After the war, he was reconciled with his brother John and returned to the North. He died a Confederate carpetbagger practicing law and accounting in New York. Readers interested in the antebellum South, an ambitious family's struggle to attain social status, and the consequences of allegiance during the Civil War will be enthralled by Gower's provocative biography.

Delicate power with style and grace.......2002-09-15

Future meet the past, and the quality of human spirit that is an integral part of modern America. Time travel is possible with Herschel Gower's beautifully written book. The story of General Dahlgren has everything necessary for a work of fiction, but this is, indeed, fact. General Dahlgren was a first generation American, a hard working self made man, a lawyer, a planter, a frontiersman, a business man who rose to greatness within his community, joined the ranks of the Confederacy in defense of his ideals, then faced bankruptcy and poverty in defeat, only to remake himself and rebuild his shattered world. Mr. Gower is not interested in hero worship, however, and the General is presented to us with intimate detail, both good and bad, both invigorating and humiliating. This intimacy is often from the General himself, who Gower allows to tell his own story at every turn. There is so much to glean from a history of this sort, from a deep and varied accounting of day to day existence to an understanding of the minds and thought patterns that shaped men's worlds in the 19th Century. Anyone who reads this work will develop an admiration for a time, place and people completely self aware, not only of surroundings, but of advantages that a lifetime can put into rare and fragile perspective. The similarities are sometimes suprising, for instance: boys playing pranks and party goers appreciating a pacificity of existence. Who today hasn't remarked that life is good? But who today could survive the daily struggle that was a 19th century life, and do so with grace, humility and humor? General Dahlgren's story is compelling and fascinating and perfectly relevant in today's world of financial boom and bust. Herschel Gower's work is impressive in scope, delicately and beautifully written and as much a page turner as any adventure novel. This book is definitely a must.

Survivors of Hard Times.......2002-08-18

Intrigued by initials carved on a rock on August 31,1860, and discovered on August 31, 1990, Herschel Gower began his research on the Dahlgren family by identifying all the members of a house party in the last summer before the Civil War. The resulting narrative of lives and homes and dreams changed and lost from 1861 to the early twentieth century is the story not only of Charles Dahlgren and his family but also of many Confederate families with Union relatives. Their letters and diaries are eloquent with the truth about survival in hard times. One of the survivors, looking back in 1917, said of the Dahlgrens in 1860, ". . . we were happy and we knew it and we thought the happiness would go on and on."

Great story, great history.......2002-06-21

Herschel Gower's meticulous research and well written story of Charles Dahlgren and his family have brought history and the Dahlgrens to life. Any reader will find this a fascinating story as well as a great insight into history. Congratulations to Dr. Gower for his splendid work!
