      Book Description

One of the most contentious and high-profile aspects of European Community competition law and policy has been the regulation of what may be described as serious antitrust violations, typically involving large and powerful corporate producers and traders operating across Europe, if not also in a wider international context. Such 'hard core' cartels characteristically engage in practices such as price fixing, bid rigging, market sharing and limiting production in order to ensure 'market stability' and maintain and increase profits. There is little doubt now in terms of competition theory and policy at both international and national levels about the damaging effect of such trading practices on public and consumer interests, and such cartels have been increasingly strongly condemned in the legal process of regulating and protecting competition. Indeed, a number of legal systems are now following the American lead in criminalizing such activity. This may therefore be seen as the 'hard end' of the enforcement of competition policy, requiring more confrontational and aggressive methods of regulation, yet also presenting considerable challenges to effective enforcement on account of the economic power, sophistication and determination of the typical participants in such cartels. The focus of this study is a critical evaluation of the way in which European-level regulation has evolved to deal with the problem of anti-competitive cartels. It traces the historical development of cartel regulation in Europe, comparing the pragmatic and empirical approach traditional in Europe with the more dogmatic and uncompromising American policy on cartels and asks whether a fully-fledged criminal proceeding (with its attendant level of legal safeguards) is the most appropriate approach to legal regulation .

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Possibly WAITLEY's best program.......2004-06-17

In New Dynamics of Goal setting, the great Dr. Denis Waitley introduces the concept of FLEXTACTICS of which there are 10 Flextactic strategies:

      1) Thrive on Risk as a part of life
      2) Use your past to chart your future
      3) Set your life-forming goals to keep on track
      4) Set your life forming goals to keep on track
      5) Let reality influence your goals
      6) Turn obstacles into your advantage
      7) Be selective to gain the most from today
      8) Change your attitude toward work
      9) Find goals that motivate yourself and others
      10)Be flexible in your expectations
11)Set your new standards when you exceed your goals

Overall, a totally different approach to goal setting and achieving goals. Written back in the mid 90's to address the millions of jobs lost during Pres. Clintons administration where over 1/2 million jobs were lost and continued after his term was over.

To succeed in these time you have to be flexible and Waitleys FLEXTACTICS does just that.

4 out of 5 stars definitely a step in the right direction.......2000-02-23

As the world changes rapidly around us, Denis Waitley recommends, among others, a good old fashioned remedy: "Write your ideas on paper. Then review them frequently."

For years I've been looking for a one-stop-shopping technique for tying together goals, plans, personal philosophy. This book offers "flextactics," which are almost the answer for me. Not quite, though.

I really like the encouragement Mr. Waitley provides. The book is worthwhile for that reason alone. I also like his step-by-step flextactics instructions - in theory, at least. But I found that I could not get past even the first day's exercise. He suggests identifying your all consuming, driving life's purpose. Subsequent days' exercises build upon that life's purpose. I'm one of those people who can't quite identify the long term purpose, but who has plenty of energy in the short term, and even medium term.

I eventually gave up and just fell back to the simple technique of writing, writing, writing, and occasionally regrouping and rewriting. This process in itself has been remarkably useful.

So I guess you could say I exercised some of the book's core principles. I will revisit this book a year or two from now.

5 out of 5 stars Will make you believe 'you can do it'.......1999-12-05

.. and you will be able to 'do it' with this book's help. I certainly recommend this book to anyone who needs guidence and encouragement in setting lifetime goals and establishing them. I bought another copy for my brother, too. I wish I had read it earlier in my life.

4 out of 5 stars Flexible is the watchword for goal setting in today's arena........1999-01-04

Flextactics sounds like the perfect plan for our ever changing world. First copyrighted in 1993, this work takes the cookie cutter pieces of self help and puts a flexible spin on them that makes them more pliable and useful in this spin-on-a-dime changing society. The fact that most of the new jobs ten years from now probably haven't been invented yet, makes this a timely and insightful look into goal setting and coping with change.

4 out of 5 stars Great vegan sweets collection.......2007-08-27

This is a wonderful cookbook filled with sweet treats for vegans and easy to follow recipe instructions. The only gripe that I have with this book is that most of the recipes use maple syrup in large quantities which is not economical for most of us.

      5 out of 5 stars Delicious.......2007-08-22

I've eaten the results of these recipes, served by Fran, herself. They are simply delicious. Knowing that they are healthy makes them all the more yummy.

5 out of 5 stars Fool Your Taste Buds Easily.......2007-03-26

If you're new to vegan baking, you're likely to be intimidated by the process, and concerned that the results won't stand up to what you expect and get from your old standards.

Well, fear no more, as expert vegan baker Fran Costigan makes vegan baking easy and you can count on results that will fool your friends, family and loved ones because their taste buds not might not realize that you've given them vegan baked goods and other tasty treats.

Some of my favorite recipes are Mango Pineapple Mousse, Super Fudge Lowfat Brownies and Currant Scones, which I produced with terrific results.

There are wheat-free recipes that work wonders when you get those guests with specific needs, and everyone else will like them, too.

While the recipes are great, even better are the specific instructions and information on equipment, unusual ingredients, and secrets to baking great vegan cakes.

If dessert is on the menu, this is the go-to book on my bookshelf.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book on Baking Ever!.......2007-02-16

I absolutely love this book. Everything in it comes out perfectly. The cranberry apple pie is simply the best pie I've ever had. The chocolate cake recipe is excellent as well.

5 out of 5 stars Kids can lick the bowl... adults too! .......2007-02-14

For my son's 7th birthday he wanted chocolate cupcakes in school. As a mom who makes a living helping parents raise health children, I grabbed "More Great Good Dairy-Free Desserts Naturally" and made the Chocolate Cake...to live for. Only twist was I bought dinosaur molds and made very cool 3-d dinosaur "cupcakes." You should have seen the faces on the kids in his class when we handed these out -- and then lots of mmmm's and smiles after the first bite! I usually bring in frozen bananas for a healthy, dairy free birthday treat, and although those usually go over great, I know my son was so happy to have a cake option this year.

I have to say this book has turned me back into a cool mom in the eyes of my kids. They can't believe when I ask them if they want to bake something with chocolate as one of the ingredients (I'm usually the fruit smoothie, sorbet, fruit salad dessert maker-- all favorites in our home, but even I enjoy indulging in chocolate!).

Whether your family needs to eat dairy free, or you just prefer it as I do, this book is a must buy!

I love this book had it for years and misplaced it. Just had to get a replacement. I'm not much on eating my vegies but this book makes it easy and interesting. Really glad I was able to get a copy.

      2 out of 5 stars Good recipes but I can't overlook author's ignorant statements..........2006-11-15

This book has some good recipes, as has been stated already, but I have two points to make that might be of interest to others when considering buying this book.
      1) The author states at the beginning of the book that the purpose of cows is to give us [meaning humans] milk. Now, I would expect that type of a statement perhaps from the brainwashed 3-year-old daughter of a dairy cow "farmer," but not from a grown adult who, presumably, had biology classes and/or has some understanding of mothers and their babies. I understand that sometimes vegetarian cookbooks are lacto-ovo or the watered-down definition of "vegetarian," and I don't fault those books for being such; however, I think the author's statement is shocking and actually horrifying that he would be so selfish to think that a mother cow providing milk only at a time she has a calf would be his for the taking. I won't ramble on about that, since this review needs to be about the book itself.

      2) There are so many fried foods in this book. I don't think I've ever seen a cookbook with more deep-fried food recipes! I know that fat and oil taste good and provide a crunch to food, but I sure hope no one eats that way every day or even every week. I'm sure some can be baked instead. I would note these may be good in making dishes for omnivores and lacto-ovo vegetarians [or people used to high-fat food] who might find lower-fat items bland.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE IN THE KITCHEN!!.......2003-03-25

I have been a vegetarian since i was born and i LOVE cooking. I have probably had this cookbook for 10 years and have used it regularly along with three other cookbooks by Kurma. I do eat dairy (organic and with no animal hormones or any other animal ingredients) but i have never eaten any meat, fish, eggs, chicken or gelatin.

If you like to eat food that actually has taste than this cookbook is an essential for your kitchen! A lot of the time people think that vegetarian food is some tasteless tofu or a little salad.....because "WHAT IN THE WORLD DOES A VEGETARIAN EAT??" I have heard that question many times. Well we eat a variety of things and this book is a great tasting way to understanding what good vegetarian food tastes like!

The spices aren't so hard to find......mostly they will come from your local indian grocery store (which are actually quite common) or even the regular grocery store and you might spend a bit to buy most of them but they last for quite a while and you will have more freedom in deciding what you are going to cook. I would say that its a little more challenging to find the ingredients for the chinese and thai dishes just because they are much more unfamiliar but never hurts to try and it will be worth it when you get to eat! Also for those of you who don't like garlic or onions or both...Kurma offers a great alternative called hing or sometimes aesfatita (which is a yellow powder spice from india)which works great.

In addition to cooking with Kurma i would recommend Yamuna's Table although i haven't spent as much time with her recipies..... i have used them and they turn out excellent as well but require more ingredients and preperation time.

I really love the carob cake.......you might be worried that 'without eggs how can you make a cake?' but it turns out perfect every time. I have to admit that i am a chocolate lover and so i use chocolate instead of carob.....but thats the beauty of these recipies.... have fun with them...improvise a little! ENJOY! I know i am!!

5 out of 5 stars The only vegetarian cookbook you'll ever need.......2002-10-02

I'm taking steps to ease my way into vegetarianism, and this book has been a godsend. For me, the best features of this book are the short explanation of the authors's philosophy of vegetarian cooking (keep in mind that Hare Krishna considers cooking as an act of worship), and a two page list of suggested menus for different occasions, which is really helpful for those who spends more than 20 minutes deciding what to cook for a proper three course meal. Also impressive is the glossary section, which give an explanation of the herbs and spices you might encounter in the book.

To top it off, the book is actually a good read! Clearly this book is a labour of love.

General note: if you want to take cooking a little bit more seriously, take my advice - don't buy those 30 pages recipe booklets sitting near the supermarket counters. Spend some money and get a proper recipe book - along with good kitchen tools.

5 out of 5 stars The best veggie cookbook ever!.......2001-12-25

This book is wonderful. Its recipes are foolproof and fun to make. I have tried most of them and none of them ever really failed. If you are a vegetarian, this book is an absolut MUSTHAVE!

4 out of 5 stars One of my most used books.......2007-06-09

I'm not even vegetarian and this is one of my most used books, especially in the summer when fresh fruits and vegtables are abundant. Very tasty and adaptable recipes.

3 out of 5 stars This book is the bargain basement of vegetarian recipes:.......2007-04-26

Having gone veggie a few years ago, this was my first non-introductory style vegetarian cookbook, and although I commend Spitler and company for the sheer quantity of recipes here, I've found the recipes to be very hit or miss. I think this is partly due to the often non-intuitive combinations of ingredients found in many of the recipes. While sometimes these out-of-place ingredients are genius (i.e. the black -not adzuki- beans in the egg rolls, or the more than liberal use of celery seed in the bleu cheese dressing), sometimes these combinations can turn what seemed like a tasty dinner into something even my dog looks askance at (like the orange juice and zest in the hummus or the cream cheese and cranberries in the savory wontons). The dishes err more on the sweet side of the palate than on the spicy side. That said, all of the dessert type foods I have tried so far have been solidly good, while the majority of the entrees required a healthy dose of crushed red pepper. My suspicion is that these recipes were generated by a crew less than adequately familiar with vegetarianism, as many of the recipes attempt to make use of meat substitutes (i.e. Mexi "meatball" soup, rigatoni with italian "sausage" and fennel pesto, "burgers" provencal, swedish "meatball" and dilled potato cassarole, etc, etc)with less than appetizing results. There are a least two problems here: first, there are plenty of amazing veggie dishes that don't try to imitate the "meat and potato" style meal (there are almost NO Indian entrees in this book), and second, nothing makes one miss the real thing more than a poor substitute. Yes, those tvp crumbles look innocent enough in the grocery aisle and are easy enough to throw into the pasta sauce, but unless you want to spend you're evening sobbing over your half eaten plate of "sausage" lasagna for your momma's home cooking, then PLEASE skip the phoneys and throw in some chopped baby bellas instead. To summarize, this book is like the bargain basement of vegetarian recipes: over-stuffed with so-so items, but amidst the bland and the out-and-out bad, there are a few gems that make this book deserving of a place on your shelf.

As a bonus for those tracking diet information: each recipe is tagged as vegan, lacto-ovo, lacto, or ovo, to make finding appropriate recipes easy, and all recipes come with calorie counts, basic nutrition information, and the exchange listings for the ADA.

      4 out of 5 stars great reference.......2007-02-05

I bought this because my friend has this and made so many great recipies from here. It's huge with many great recipies that I use very often. My only complaint would be it's no frills without photos. Everything I've made is great... hard to believe it's all healthy!

      5 out of 5 stars Every Recipe a Winner!.......2006-07-11

I've had this cookbook for six months or so, and I've made somewhere around 40 of the recipes. Every one has been a huge success! Sue Spitler understands that vegetarian doesn't have to be boring. I've fed non-vegetarians meals made from these recipes and have had rave reviews! If you're new to vegetarianism, or if you want to bring excitement to your meals, you have to own this cookbook!

4 out of 5 stars Interesting recipes, Excellent Nutritional Information.......2005-08-26

PROS: This book is wonderful for those who are planning low-fat meals for dieting purposes. Even before I prepare the meals, I am able to see the total nutritional information for the serving for that meal. It also gives me greater flexibility to omit or half some of the ingredients that are higher in fat grams (for example if a meal says 5g fat per serving I choose to: a)omit the oil or oil based (or high fat) ingredient OR b)half the serving). Knowing the nutritional values in the meal gives me freedom to manipulate it until I'm satisified that I'm getting the lowest fat intake possible. The book is beautifully laid out based on meal categories (eg. Soups & Stews, Sauces, Veggie Express, etc.) So I decide what I want for a meal and then I turn to that page. One note to buyers: I recommend that you browse through the meal ingredients the day before to get an idea of what you need to buy at the store. Each recipe is labelled so that each vegetarian type would know at a glance whether that meal is right for them. WONDERFUL!

CON: Some of the ingredients asked for are too exotic for me to find where I live. (e.g. cactus leaves, achiote oil, adzuki bean). This isn't too much of a CON, since I can skip those meals and choose something else.

This is a wonderfully laid-out book with a wealth of dishes that allow you to be creative with vegetarian meals. I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Our Vegetarian Bible.......2005-12-02

We could not live without this cookbook! It has an entire section on one-dish skillet meals, which is perfect for a busy, two-job couple. All of the meals are incredibly simple to make, and all are very tasty. And, as other reviewers have mentioned, every recipe has its own picture, which I consider essential in any cookbook.

If you or someone you know is a vegetarian, you absolutely must get this book!

4 out of 5 stars Good even for non-vegetarians.......2002-11-15

I've had this cookbook for several years now, and have made many of the dishes inside it. All have been easy (simple, actually) to make and most have been tasty. There are sections on soup, salads, entrees, etc. Each recipe has a picture, which is important to me. It probably only contains about 80 recipes or so, split into about 5 categories (soup, salad, etc), so it's not all-encompassing. But I would recommend it to anyone.

I waited over a year for this book to be published in the United States. When it arrived I was shocked to see that the measurements in the recipes are in grams, litres and celsius. If I had wanted this I could have ordered the book from Amazon UK.

In addition the book bills itself as being a macrobiotic cookbook yet it contains both tomatoes and peppers, both of which are not eaten on a macrobiotic diet.

The book is a piece of useless fluff.
