A powerful look at the horror of the Civil War.......2002-07-12
Private Osborne is a powerful look at the horror of the Civil War through the eyes of a young man who was only sixteen when he joined as a member of the Massachusetts 23rd Volunteers. His letters are presented in this thoughtful account, which provides plenty of historical detail and context to the words of a Civil War battlefield survivor who penned first-hand testimony of the Burnside Expedition, Roanoke Island, and the Second Front against Richmond among his experiences. Private Osborne also follows the soldier's life after the Civil War, up to his death in 1923. A remarkable, gripping testimony, Private Osborne is a welcome and highly recommended contribution to the annals of Civil War history.
Book Description
At 15, Osborne joined the Massachusetts 23rd Regiment, in 1861, and soon fought in the first amphibious battle in U.S. history: the Burnside Expedition against the North Carolina coast. His 23rd Regiment was also in the Battle of Roanoke Island, the first major Union victory. He later fought at Cold Harbor, Petersburg, New Bern, Goldsboro, Kinston and Charleston. He wrote 52 lively, humorous letters to his mother and sister about battles and campaigns, and life in camp and on the march. He kept up with events in the war, commenting on actions by President Lincoln and generals he knew about: Sherman, Grant, McClellan, Burnside, Foster, Hunter and Butler.

Another collection of Civil War letters.......2001-07-02
This book is based around fifty-odd letters written by Frederick Osborne from Salem, Massachusetts who served three years in Company F, 23rd Massachusetts Infantry. His brother Stephen also served in Company G and brother Nathan became a career soldier after securing a commission in the Regular Army. Marcotte tries to create a worthwhile book out of Osborne's rather mundane letters with some decent research. Osborne was only under fire at the battles of Roanoke, New Bern, and Whitehall, all in North Carolina in 1862. The 23rd did not see much active service in 1863 and Osborne was transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps due to a non-combat leg injury sustained in a "scuffle" and missed seeing any action during 1864 before his muster out that fall. Taking Osborne's letters as a basis for the book, Marcotte first prints the letter then explains what you have just read in a text that goes on for 1-3 pages each. He also uses footnotes, but the redundant material of explaining what you have just read, plus information on everything from the lyceum, to Union war aims, to soldier life, could also have been placed in footnotes. If this book was meant for readers who know little about the Civil War, the very limited topic will find few takers. If meant for readers with an interest in the war, most of Marcotte's text is not necessary. This book will interest 1) readers who read accounts by New England soldiers, and, 2) those having an interest in the North Carolina campaign of 1862. Osborne's father was an officer of the Salem Lyceum along with Nathaniel Hawthorne. Unfortunately, there is no evidence why a sixteen year-old son of an educated family would be allowed to enlist in 1861. The book needed a careful proofreader. Major J. Lewis Stackpole is identified as Stockpile, Stackpole and Stockpile again all within a set of notes on page 267. Marcotte makes a game attempt to create a useful book, but given the very ordinary letters that have survived (and it seems many have not) about a campaign that few people in the Civil War community care about, this book has very limited usefulness.

Consider another book........2006-08-15
Butler's Lives of the Saints: New Concise Ed., edited by Paul Burns, ISBN 0-8146-2903-2, Copyright 2003
Consider another book. Despite "Butler's" being in the title, it seems to bear no relation to the Butler's Lives of the Saints published in the 1950s and 1800s.
Defects:
1. There is no index or alphabetical list of saints. If you want to look up a saint by name, you have to scan the list of 366 saints in the table of contents, which is six pages long. An index would have provided quick access.
2. Saints are not listed under their actual commemoration day. Why? Because the saints did not "die on conveniently spaced dates" (page xi). Nothing in the description of the saint alerts you to the date being wrong. To determine the correct day, you have to closely read a paragraph at the beginning of the month.
3. The book does not bear an imprimatur from a bishop or "nihil obstat" showing that it's free from error. To illustrate why this is a problem, one-third of the entry for St. Maria Goretti is not about her; it's a critique of her sainthood and of the Church. Example: in "feminist circles ... Maria has been seen more as a martyr to patriarchal society" (p. 310).
Old heroes to learn about.......2006-07-16
It has been nearly fifty years since I read this book. I had forgotten how much detail Butler placed in his research of the lives of the saints. Although my mind has moved more towards agnosticism, it is of great interest for me to read how the Church appreciated the lives of some of its past members. I am now trying to read of the saints related to that day, but alas my schedule is too busy to read the entire selection.
all 12 volumes.......2006-02-04
This edition of Butler's Lives of the Saints presents its subjects in a vibrant, sober and (as required by the genre) brief way. The books are like the Litany of the Saints invoking these memorable Christians and giving readers a picture of the communion of saints. They came from every time and place. They represent all of human variation. The series does not shy away from presenting weaknesses along with admirable qualities. This clearly comes from the conviction that God's grace does not work only in ideal people, but every variety of person can be a saint.
Butler's Lives of the Saints.......2005-09-08
The rating of 3 stars does not reflect THE BOOK - actually, I have another copy of this book and love it. However, I ordered (I THOUGHT) A LARGE PRINT EDITION. Your presentation on line was very confusing. I requested large print offerings, and, found that not everything that came up for perusal was large print. I made the mistake of selecting what I thought WAS large print only to find, upon receipt, that it was not. I was purchasing this book as a gift for my neighbor who desired a book about the lives of the saints in large print because he is legally blind and cannot read the normal type. For that reason I rated my experience as a 3 because I am disappointed. I AM STILL LOOKING FOR A BOOK ABOUT SAINTS IN LARGE PRINT AND WOULD APPRECIATE ANY HELP YOU CAN GIVE ME. R. Ford
Sorry, I think it's awful.......2004-07-07
Paul Burns is, according to the book jacket, distinguished only by the fact he has a "first-class degree in modern languages" (whatever that is), and has translated many books about liberation theology.
He systematically attacks all of the greatest Catholic saints, like the Cure d'Ars (an "intransigent moralizer"), saint Joan of Arc (maybe she didn't exist!), saint Rose of Lima (she had mental problems), all missionaries ("cultural imperialists!"), etc. Cheers! (www.inquisition.ca)
Book Description
Originally published by Bulfinch Press in 1994 in hardcover, ONE HUNDRED SAINTS is still the only version of Butler's long-revered Lives of the Saints that presents saints in all their splendor-in both word and image. The selection reflects contemporary interest and patronage. All the Apostles are featured, as are the Church Fathers (e.g., Augustine, Jerome, Thomas Aquinas). Also included are saints whose lives and works provide fascinating glimpses into their holy lives and the traditions and beliefs that have grown because of them. We see Bernini's sculptural representation of Teresa of Avila in ecstasy; Sebastian's martyrdom as pictured by Titian; and El Greco's penetrating rendering of St. Martin and the Beggar.

Outstanding Coffee Table Book on the Saints.......2004-08-22
I bought this book from a used book shop and was thoroughly impressed by the beautiful selection of pictures and pieces from Butler's Lives of the Saints. If you are looking for an introduction to the saints, this is well worth the money.
Book Description
There is no greater authority on the saints than Fr. Alban Butler. His enormous research has been the standard reference on the subject for the last two and half centuries. But this new single-volume adaptation presents Butler's beloved work in today's language, and provides an illuminating, accessible guide to the lives and legacies of the Christian saints.
Butler's daily readings give us a unique opportunity to engage directly with these great figures of faith. Turning attention away from the superhuman, miraculous themes that are prevalent in earlier works, Butler gives us saints who are examples of Christian living and practice, who provide inspiration for our own lives, in every time and circumstance. As Butler writes: "They were once what we are now, travelers on earth. They had the same weaknesses we have. We have difficulties; so had the saints."

Superior - by far - of all the modern 'concise' editions.......2007-06-01
One needs to first remember that the original Butler's Lives of the Saints has been frequently edited and revised, beginning with Thurston and Attwater. Since that edition, there have been numerous attempts at updating and revising based(especially)on the new Roman Calendar of 1969.
For more learned opinions and observations, please search out and read the other reviews of the series and other editions made by readers.
That being said, I do believe that this edition by Bernard Bangley is a particularly fine attempt at balancing the lives, stories and examples of the saints, when compared with so many of the other concise editions.
Bangley states in the Introduction:
"To make the collection under these covers as broad as possible, preference is often given to women, laity, recent candidates for sainthood, country of origin, and above all, spiritual relevance for today. Rather than overly repeating familiar themes, I have given special attention to the distinctive aspects of interesting individuals. Many saints are not included. The Church has never assumed that even its extensive list is complete. Moreover, only God knows many saints." (ix-x)
Its best feature, however, is Bangley's very careful attempt to avoid imposing his own opinions, perspectives, editorials and agendas. He states the facts and history, within the context of the times and circumstances of the individual saint/blessed. This cannot be said of some of the other editors and versions currently(or have been previously) published.
Finally, from the back cover page:
"Butler's daily readings give us a unique opportunity to engage directly with these great figures of faith. Turning attention away from the superhuman, miraculous themes that are prevalent in earlier works, Butler gives us saints who are examples of Christian living and practice, who provide inspiritation for our own lives, in every time and circumstance. As Butler writes: '"They were once what we are now, travelers on earth. They had the same weaknesses we have. We have difficulties; so had the saints."'"
If one wants the fantastic, 'golden legend' glorious stories of the miracles of the saints, then the original Butler's would be a great resource - and indeed, those are an integral part of our Christian story-telling heritage.
On the other hand, the saints are also real flesh-and-blood people like each of us. They are teachers of life and faith, and we can study their struggles, their examples, their responses.
This is one version I highly recommend.

Simply put...this is a great resource. It is concise and interesting information compiled in one book that we found fascinating. A great reference book and the profiles will whet your appetite to know even more on the subjects. But we read it because it's just plain interesting!
A Daily Reading on the Saints for Adults.......2005-10-30
"Lives of the Saints" was originally titled as "Lives of the Fathers, Martyrs and Other Principal Saints". Its author was Father Alban Butler, who lived from 1735-1763. It is, as the original title indicates, a book mostly of the priests, bishops, cardinals and popes of the church who were saints as well as of the martyrs and other saints. It was written during the 30 years that he was a professor of philosophy and theology, and was written for adult readers. It contains a concise but good biography on about 400 saints, at least one on his/her feast day for each day of the year. It has a 29 page appendix of more recent saints by a more recent author.

Review from the Publisher.......2001-03-09
Father Butler's famous Lives of the Saints ranks only after the Bible, the Missal and The Imitation of Christ as the all-time most popular and authoritative Catholic book. This handy one-volume edition is taken from the many volumes of the highly revered Father Alban Butler (1710-1763), an English Catholic priest and scholar, who devoted almost 30 years of meticulous research to the lives of the Saints and whose work was originally published in the 1750's. This present edition contains no debunking, as do many other editions; thus, it conveys Fr. Butler's spirit of profound faith in and reverence for our saintly traditions. Additional Saints have been added, however, who have lived since the author's time-including St. Theresa the Little Flower, Pope St. Pius X, St. Catherine Labouré, etc. Based on the traditional Catholic calendar as of 1955. Gives approximately one page per saint, one or two saints per day, plus a brief Reflection based on the virtues of the saint. Extremely valuable to read daily in order to put oneself in tune with our holy Catholic traditions and to develop a truly Catholic approach to life. Shows the fruits of the Catholic Faith as borne out in the lives of its greatest adherents. Excellent for the whole family!! 428pp. PB. Imprimatur.
