How do you review a book containing regulations? The detail in this CFR is intense, as you would expect from any government set of rules and regulations.

This issue is outdated now. The updated versions are now on the internet. However, in dealng with any legal issue of the Federal Government with the American Indians, this book should be on your desk.

I purchased the CD version of this book, which consists of one audio CD and a downloadable CD. The audio CD, which sounds alot like an infomercial, consists of little more than useless fluff about the California business climate and other very generalized information. Please don't waste your money (or time) on this garbage.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful primer on starting a business with contact information for locating startup funds if necessary........2006-09-05

This is a valuable book (resource) for budding entrepreneurs. It seems to try to cover all the bases for starting a small business, but it can't do them all well in the space available between its covers. The book is only 288 pages long. If you are in the planning stages of starting a small business, then I highly recommend you get a copy of this book. Read it, study it, and outline it. There are helpful checklists to help you grasp the subjects. You will come up with a plethora of keywords and terms that you will want to google to find Web pages giving more detailed (and maybe more current) information.

I am a SCORE counselor (Senior Corps of Retired Executives) who typically does face-to-face counseling sessions three nights a month. It would really be neat if my clients would read this book BEFORE they came to their session with me because they would pretty much be "educated customers" ready to ask educated questions. Our sessions would be so much more beneficial.

        My favorite chapters were:

        1. Initial business concerns
        2. Your business' structure
        3. Business start-up details
        5. Sources of business assistance (SCORE is mentioned here)
        7. Your smart business plan (and a good sample plan is included)
        8. Obtaining the financing you need

The book is weak when it comes to how the Internet can be used in corresponding, hiring, and marketing. But this is just one example of how googling keywords and concepts found in the book will make the book more complete. Don't treat the book as authoritative on the law. It isn't. Nor was it ever intended to be. It is light on tax information as it relates to small business.

I was particularly impressed with the material presented in Chapter 2: Choice of Legal Entity. That subject is sorely ignored in most small business books, and it is critically important. It is a subject I regularly must spend a great deal of time discussing at my SCORE sessions. This book does a pretty good job on the topic.

Chapters 4 and 9 through 12 are easy to find fault with. The topic of each could fill a book. But having these topics covered definitely will help a budding entrepreneur know some of the issues they raise.

I would have liked the book more if Chapter 6 (marketing) had been less superficial. When I read it I got the impression that the author was more a public relations expert than a marketing expert. I generally categorize public relations as a subset of marketing. Marketing includes advertising, public relations, and a whole host of other promotion techniques. I did not get this message when I read the book. I also would have liked the book better if the Internet, email, and Web sites had been discussed more. But there are many books on those subjects. Therefore, I can't complain too much about the limited discussion of computers.

When you read this book it may feel a little like it was produced on an assembly line. Maybe it was? There are 50 versions of this book sold; the only state I haven't found a copy for is Montana. Content is king, and this book has it. 5 stars!

4 out of 5 stars Off To A Good Start..........2002-09-08

If you are clueless as to how to start a corporation in the State of California, this book is a great place to begin.

A few things about the title of the book are slightly misleading, which I will get out of the way up-front. First of all, this book in no way encourages you to start a California corporation on your own. This is not a do-it-youself kit that walks you through the process of forming a corporation. Rather, it is largely aimed at helping you to decide what type of business entity is appropriate for your company, and how to get started. It gives comparisons between C-Corporations, S-Corprations, LLCs, sole-proprietorships, partnerships, etc. It comes to the author's slightly biased (but correct) conclusion that all but corporations are inappropriate for most business use.

Another problem with the title, but which is more of an oddity than a real issue, is that the cover and title refer to forming a corporation as "A Simple 9-Part Program". Once you get the actual book though, you will find that the cover and title vary slightly from what is advertised. It is actually "A Simple 6-Part Program"! I am not sure what happened to the 3 other "simple parts", but they somehow disapperared between the time I ordered the book, and the time I received it! Odd, but unimportant.

One other point, there is not a great deal of information in this book specific to the State of California. Most of it is more general in nature concerning corporations. Also, some of the info is slightly dated, as it was published in 1998. The reference section definitely could stand to be updated with website addresses, rather than just mailing addresses and phone numbers. The vast majority of general information still applies though, and has not changed since the time this book was initially written.

The author of this book is a lawyer, and urges you to go through one when starting your California Corporation. For anyone even considering doing something as foolish as filing to become a corporation on their own, this book will set them straight. The book does help you with may items that you would likely have to pay an attorney extra for though, such as providing templates for many forms, and answering many questions that would cost you big bucks to get your attorney to answer. All in all, it is an excellent value, and will save you quite a bit of time and effort when it comes to finding answers to simple questions as to how to get started. Although you will not really be able to run a corporation after reading this book, at least you know exactly what you are up against, and where to get started. The author's writing style is excellent, and the book was enjoyable enough to read, for such a relatively dull subject.

3 out of 5 stars Covers a lot of information, but not very thoroughly.......1998-08-24

The table of contents lists an ambitious amount of material, but the coverage is very general and has no depth. After I read the chapter on incorporating, I didn't know any more than when I started, and my knowledge is very general. This is too light for a person seriously interested in starting a business.

                  Book Description

Operations research techniques are extremely important tools for planning airline operations. However much of the technical literature on airline optimization models is highly specialized and accessible only to a limited audience. Allied to this there is a growing concern among the operations research community that the materials offered in OR courses at MBA or senior undergraduate business level are too abstract, outdated, and at times irrelevant to today's fast and dynamic airline industry.

This book demystifies the operations and scheduling environment, presenting simplified and easy to understand models, applied to straightforward and practical examples. After introducing the key issues confronting operations and scheduling within airlines, it goes on to provide an objective review of the various optimization models adopted in practice. Each model provides airlines with efficient solutions to a range of scenarios, and is accompanied by case studies similar to those experienced by commercial airlines. Using unique source material, and combining interviews with alumni working at operations and scheduling departments of various airlines, this solution orientated approach has been used on courses with outstanding feedback.

The book is structured to maximize its course teaching potential. Used on MBA courses with students grouped into small teams, it requires students to assume the role of operation managers, responsible for creating their own airlines, selecting routes and flight networks, considering fleet diversity, aircraft routings and maintenance locations, and examining hub and spoke systems, air/ground crew scheduling, and gate assignments.

The readership includes graduate and undergraduate business, management, transportation, and engineering students; airlines training and acquainting new recruits with operations planning and scheduling processes; general aviation, flight school, International Air Transport Association (IATA), and International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) training course instructors; executive jet, chartered flight, air-cargo and package delivery companies, and airline consultants.

                      Book Description

Winning Airlines: Productivity and Cost Competitiveness of the World's Major Airlines examines the supply side of air transport services, where airline management has considerable control. This volume focuses on fundamental issues related to productivity, input prices, exchange rate dynamics, global sourcing of airline labor, maintenance and other services, and unit cost competitiveness of the airlines. It also examines underlying trends in the airline industry and provides systematic analysis of airline productivity and cost competitiveness using the latest available data.
Winning Airlines: Productivity and Cost Competitiveness of the World's Major Airlines aims to accomplish four major goals: to provide a review of trends in international air transport's regulatory and business environments; to provide practical insights into the key issues determining airline cost and productivity performance; to improve existing methodologies for comparing the productivity and cost competitiveness of various airlines; and to identify aspects of airline strategy, planning and operations where airline management and public policy makers should focus their efforts to enhance competitiveness in the globalizing airline markets.

                                Book Description

However depressing the Depression Era may have been, the manufacturers of glassware did their best to add color to peoples lives. The kitchens of America were awash in blue, green, pink, and golden glasswares, not to mention the opaque hues of Jadite, Delphite, and milk glass. Prominent among them were the milk glass spice shakers shown in this book. They are avidly collected today with lithographed (no decals) apples, birds, butterflies, cherries, cattails, dogs, Dutch motifs, flowers, fruit baskets, hats, figures, leaves, Mexican motifs, musketeers, Niagra Falls, sailboats, and more. For Depression glass collectors and shaker collectors alike, this is a valuable addition to the available literature. Hundreds of shakers are presented in 119 beautiful photographs. Prices are provided for each shaker, with check-off boxes to record additions to your collection. This book will delight and inform.

5 out of 5 stars Great pictures, realistic prices -- a well planned guide........2001-08-05

For the collector of kitchen shakers, especially shakers manufactured by Tipp City, Barbara has successfully captured a diversified collection of patterns and colors which have been wonderfully photographed so that you can see each shaker clearly and precisely. Yes Gene Florence has wonderful depression glass books but Barbara has the best pictures available at a reasonable price, especially to the beginner. A lot of designs have never even been found in a kitchen depression glassware book previously. The GUIDE is arranged to be used as a check off for collectors. Prices are much more realistic than in the latest book by Gene Florence. Nothing against Gene Florence, I have all of his books, but many of the pages are exact repeats of previous editions. Let's give Barbara a chance and a hand for taking on the job of presenting a colorful and informative book on kitchen shakers with realistic prices. I hope she will be motivated enough to come out with a second edition when additional shakers are found for inclusion. I have bought and sold hard-to-find kitchen shakers for over twenty years and I certainly wish this book had happened on the scene a long time ago when prices were $5.00 a shaker. Kitchen depression shakers are very much in demand and a lot of the new collectors need as much information and reference material as possible. Thank you Barbara for your time and effort in this book. This is one dealer that really appreciates it.

4 out of 5 stars GREAT REFERENCE BOOK!.......2001-08-01

Even though this book is limited to a particular group of Depression Era kitchen shakers (milk glass with lithographs and I am biased to these!!), it is an EXCELLENT reference guide for those of you who collect them! And if you do collect them, the check-off boxes are a handy item. GREAT SIZE for taking to those flea markets and auctions to see what you need to have! The prices listed are a good start to bargain with! BEAUTIFUL color photos of the shakers. It sits on my coffee table! Thanks, Barbara!

I would highly recommend this book to shaker collectors as it is much better than any book Gene Florence has ever put out! All I can say is: Go buy it now!

The pictures are unbelievably clear and I love the checkoff boxes to keep my collection organized. The prices are much more accurate than I have ever seen! Awful. Just awful. I know the book is inexpensive, but I literally would not have paid more than 25 cents for it if I had seen it before purchase. Very little information about few types of shakers. Spend a little more for the excellent Gene Florence book.

                                  5 out of 5 stars Old-fashioned New England.......2004-09-01

As resident chef at Canterbury NH Shaker Village, Paige focuses on simplicity, tradition and local ingredients. Recipes for dropped dumplings, corn chowder (with five variations) steamed brown bread, Sister Rebecca's cold pickle and Sister Ethel's deep-dish custard pie are accented with Shaker photos and essays on such traditions as Shaker brick-oven baked beans and Shaker Thanksgiving as well as snippets of advice from The Shaker Manifesto, their 19th century newsletter.

This is a charming and useful New England treasure with recipes to try on every page, from a simple fiddlehead fern saute or creamed oysters to potato-crusted salmon on creamed Maine crabmeat; venison meatloaf or butternut squash puree with cranberries.

5 out of 5 stars food for the soul.......2001-01-22

This is the best, the easiest, the tastiest way to re-create your grandmother's cooking. Simple directions and easily-found ingredients plus appetizing-looking pictures of the food get you going. Preparation and cooking times are included.

We have been to the Shaker Village in Canterbury, eaten at their candlelit dinners - and then I have come home and followed the recipe in the book for what I ate the night before - and it both looked as good and tasted as delicious as when their chef prepared it.

This is one of my all-time favorite cookbooks.
