Book Description
This is the clearest, most fully illustrated version of the navigation rules that every captain must have on board—in fact, boats 12 meters (or 39 feet) and longer are required to carry a copy. For years, the United States Coast Guard has produced a guide to operating vessels safely and lawfully in both international and inland waters. But its language is legalistic, complex, and not always very comprehensible. Chapman’s easy-to-read edition has exactly the same information, but with additional illuminating commentary by Editor-at-Large Dan Fales; an explanation of many of the rules in simple, lucid detail; and advice on real-world application. With eight more illustrations than the Coast Guard’s book, the manual looks better than ever, too. No matter whether you navigate a small sailboat, motorboat, or spacious yacht, you won’t want to head onto the water without it.

MUST HAVE FOR ANY ONE ON THE WATER.......2007-01-14
Great book, really does a wonderful job of going into detail and sighting examples of the ROR. Though this is NOT a substitute for having the true COLREGS on your bridge, it is still a great learning tool and a must read for anyone spending time on the mighty (or not so mighty) seas.

Book Description
The fourth edition of the well-respected Rules of the Road contains the latest changes to the Rules as of the date of printing. The Rules are presented in a straightforward fashion designed to be useful for all who need to learn and apply the Rules, such as recreational boaters, maritime students, and professional mariners. To achieve this, the Rules are side by side on the left-hand page and the authors' comments are on the right. Differences appear in bold type. As an aid to those professionals who will be taking the Coast Guard examinations, the book includes practice questions as well as a suggested method of study.

The Best Side by Side Comparison.......2007-04-02
If you've ever had to study the nautical rules of the road and tried to compare the differences between the international and inland rules by reading the actual rule text, you'll appreciate this book. This is the best side by side comparison I have seen. The differences in the rules themselves are printed in bold font for easy identification. Also, there is helpful, practical insight where clarification of a rule is needed. This insight is given from court case results (helping to define what the authorities deem acceptable actions in traffic situations) and practical experience. If you want to get into the nitty gritty and enjoy reading more legalistic text, Farwell's might suit your fancy, but this book I would recommend to all mariners who are just learning the Rules for the first time and for those who just need to brush up before going back out to sea.
Book Description
Official publication contains International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, 1972 (COLREGS), incorporating amendments, which became effective on November 19, 1989 and November 1995. Also includes the Inland Navigation Rules that have been in effect for all inland waters, including the Great Lakes, since Mar. 1, 1983. Provides all revisions through January 1, 1999. International rules and inland rules for similar subjects are printed side-by-side for comparison.
Customer Reviews:
A very good COLREGS book.......2001-01-17
This is the "bible" that no boat should be without. It covers all the navigation rules that mariners are required to know, and is the basis for the NavRules for Windows program. The text of this book is included in an on-line help file with NavRules for Windows, and all the lights, dayshapes, and sound signals covered in the book are included in the NavRules program.
Keep this book onboard at all times........2000-09-20
The single objective of this book is to prevent collisions at sea. Licensed Captains must know this book from cover to cover but all boaters should have this little gem onboard at all times.
In fact, it is required to be onboard vessels 12 meters or more in length by Federal Law.
The book provides both International and Inland Rules and includes: vessel hierarchy (who has the right of way), Steering and sailing rules, lights and shapes and sound and light signals.
Ok, so you're cruising at night and see three white vertical lights off your bow. Trust me, you better know that this is a tugboat towing astern and the barge under tow exceeds 200 meters from the stern of the tugboat. That's right, exceeds 200 meters can be two miles....And when 'Mister tug' signals you with 5 short blasts, he is not saying "Hi, have a nice day".
No, this is not an easy reading fun filled book but it could save your life. Don't think twice about buying this book, just buy it and keep it handy. - Sig@SeaDolphin.com

Book Description
Corruption respects no borders, knows no economic distinctions, and infects all forms of government. Today, corruption has moved to the top of the global political agenda as its dramatic impact on economic development and its corrosive effect on political stability and democratic political institutions has become increasingly obvious. In the new millennium, the OECD and associated governments, which account for over 75 percent of trade and investment worldwide, will play by stricter rules. The Convention on Combating Bribery of Foreign Public Officials in International Business Transactions will outlaw the practice of bribing foreign officials, making competition for international business much more fair and open. Bribery in commercial transactions is only part of the problem. A whole arsenal of legal instruments to combat corruption have now been developed to improve ethical standards in the public sector, to end tax deductibility for bribes, to curtail money laundering, and to clean up public procurement practices. This book provides the key elements needed to build and preserve corruption-free institutions, systems, and private enterprises.

Corruption Training.......2002-07-07
This book is a very good springboard for anyone wanting information on corruption. I am teaching a course on corruption to law enforcement personnel in Europe and this is excellent source material. The OECD is an outstanding organization and has been very helpful in my research for this class.

Customer Reviews:
A great introductory read into PM.......2007-08-26
As I am taking the responsibilities of a technical leader, I am being introduced more and more into the concepts of project management, and this book has helped me a lot understanding and getting insights into the subject. Compact, rich, simple, and assumes no prior project management experience. I would recommend it for anyone who is entering a senior position (especially in the software development industry).
GREAT book...both for beginners and brushing up.......2006-01-30
I think what makes this book stand out from all the others is how well the information is laid out for the reader. This is definitely a great starting point for a PM beginner. However, I think it's also an outstanding reference guide for those that have been in the field of project management for many years. Anyone that has read the PMBOK or other PM books knows that the material can become overwhelming when it's not communicated clearly. This book does an outstanding job of making the topic easy to understand. I wish this book had been around when I was starting in this field, and even studying for the PMP exam. I highly recommend it!
Emelee Mitchum, PMP
It really does deserve its 5-star rating!.......2005-10-28
If you're either a new project manager (without PM training), or
somebody interested or involved in project management, then this
book is for you.
I've read the Project Management Institute's Project Management
Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) cover to cover and I honestly don't
know how I prevented myself from going to sleep.
This book, on the other hand, is the most exciting book I've
ever read about project management. Greg's 16 years of
experience is evident in his writing.
Get this book, read it and before you know it, you're on your
way to become a better project manager.
Very good for the absolute (and I mean absolute) beginner.......2005-09-19
If you knew nothing about project management, then this would be the book I would have you read.
Project Managers Must Have Bookshelf Reference.......2005-08-04
Project Management comes in many forms and Greg covers them all in this easy to read quick to reference guide to PM. When managing multi-level projects with teams and leaders involved it is key to have a method to the madness. Greg gives you a path to follow and makes sure the team understands that path. Love the side notes and the personality of the book as well. A successful project manager is essential to all areas of business. Most professionals should considering brushing up on this language and steps in execution to handle any type of deliverable. I read the book with a new business structure in mind and it brought to light many things that I would not have explored had I not taken the short time necessary to follow steps that force you to consider all angles of an endeavour.

Book Description
Spices and aromatics--the powerful, pleasurable, sensual ingredients used in foods, drinks, scented oils, perfumes, cosmetics, and drugs--have long been some of the most sought-after substances in the course of human history. In various forms, spices have served as appetizers, digestives, antiseptics, therapeutics, tonics, and aphrodisiacs. Dangerous Tastes explores the captivating history of spices and aromatics: the fascination that they have aroused in us, and the roads and seaways by which trade in spices has gradually grown. Andrew Dalby, who has gathered information from sources in many languages, explores each spice, interweaving its general history with the story of its discovery and various uses.
Dalby concentrates on traditional spices that are still part of world trade: cinnamon, cloves, ginger, pepper, saffron, and chili. He also discusses aromatics that are now little used in food but still belong to the spice trade and to traditional medicine: frankincense, myrrh, aloes-wood, balsam of Mecca. In addition, Dalby considers spices that were once important but that now are almost forgotten: long pepper, cubebs, grains of Paradise.
Dangerous Tastes relates how the Aztecs, who enjoyed drinking hot chocolate flavored with chili and vanilla, sometimes added annatto (a red dye) to the drink. This not only contributed to the flavor but colored the drinker's mouth red, a reminder that drinking cacao was, in Aztec thought, parallel with drinking blood. In the section on ambergris, Dalby tells how different cultures explained the origin of this substance: Arabs and Persians variously thought of it as solidified sea spray, a resin that sprung from the depths of the sea, or a fungus that grows on the sea bed as truffles grow on the roots of trees. Some Chinese believed it was the spittle of sleeping dragons. Dalby has assembled a wealth of absorbing information into a fertile human history that spreads outward with the expansion of human knowledge of spices worldwide.
Book Description
Spices & aromatics are woven into human history, taking pride of place in the markets of the world for their contribution to food, drink, health, perfume, sex, religion, magic, & ritual. Interest in their application to diet & pharmaceutics, expressed by classical writers & developed by medieval Islam, has continued in many traditional societies. The search for Eastern spices & drugs led the Portuguese to open up the sea route to India & the East Indies, & Columbus to discover a New World with aromatics of its own. This illustrated volume offers a fresh perspective on these exotic substances & the roles they have played over the cent. It shows how each region became part of a worldwide network of trade -- with consequences ranging from disaster to triumph
Customer Reviews:
Good information, but not a real good narrative.......2007-08-22
I found the book to contain good information, but the story line really did not flow very well for me. I've enjoyed "single substance" books, but this book covers a multitude of spices, so the narrative is essentially restarted for each spice. I respect the amount of research that went into the book, but I cannot say that I enjoyed reading it. If one is looking for good narrative flow, I do not recommend this book.
History of Spices.......2007-04-05
Dalby does a great job of discussing spices, both common and obscure. He introduced several spices of antiquity that I'd never heard of before his book. His writing is clear, though one can detect the English writing style. His sourcing is first rate, and his interpretations are backed up with evidence, not just opinion.
It is a short book, but definitely not a quick read - this book is information dense. I read it as a break from my daily technical reading and my regular science fiction/fantasy or military history fare - "Dangerous Tastes" was very compelling.
Who knew that spices had contributed so much to warfare?
And some of the more obscure spices - off to an Indian market to see if I can find them.
Intriguing.

Fascinating Look at the History of Spices.......2005-09-23
This book was a pleasure and a joy to read. I couldn't put it down. I even find myself rereading it, because the information is so much fun.
Besides describing the history of spicees, Dalby quotes from many ancient sources, showing what people believed in the old days about spices: how they came to be, where they grew, how they were harvested. Some tales are truly astonishing, but that's no surprise, since for many centuries, spice merchants kept the true sources a closely held secret.
While not comprehensive, the book covers all the major spices and many more unusual ones. I recommend this book to all my friends who are interested in the history of spices and the spice trade.
I agree mostly with Foxwold's review.......2005-05-02
Foxwold (his review is above mine), gave no stars to this book but I give it one. Ultimately, I think Foxwold is right that the author doesn't appear to really be an enthusiast about the history of spices.
The book is not a comprehensive view of the subject by any means, but I would still enjoy the it as a whole had it mitigated against the normal 'dry' result of reference works by being an interesting read. Dalby doesn't manage to do this at all... The style of writing is not nicely flowing and the way in which the information is organized is sterile and uninteresting. I gave him one star because I learned a FEW interesting things while reading it but ... if I am not looking at an encyclopedia or a reference text, then I want my reading material to be stimulating too.
Tough going, small result.......2004-02-26
Clearly, the author didn't have those who's interest is in the culinary use of spices in mind as an audience. One of my degrees is in history, I'm used to sorting through dry tomes for nuggets of fact, but didn't find anything useful here. May I suggest that before taking it on, the reader will want to obtain an excellent historical atlas, and a detailed botanical guide, it's the only hope one has of following along. My interest is in recreation of historically accurate recipes, but found myself sadly disappointed by the lack of reference to flavors, and a great many spices popular in medieval Europe missing entirely.
The author is clearly fascinated by ancient documents for their own sakes, and a linguist. Unfortunately for me, I'm interested in spices for their own sakes. This is scholarly enough that by page 25 I was convinced I was reading a doctoral dissertation, by page 35, I was questioning the editor's judgement. This is a stunningly dull book. Of the 200 or 300 culinary reference books I've purchased over the past 10 years, this is ONLY disappointment. It is quite functional as an insomnia cure, however.
