        Would that all business presentations could be made as succinctly and stylishly as this nifty little 72-page thumbnail guide. It makes its own points, starting with presentation preparation (knowing your audience, location and purpose; finding, structuring, and writing your material; and using audio-visual aides, and rehearsing), then covering self-preparation (improving your appearance, body image, and voice, and eliminating tension), delivery (speaking confidently, and closing effectively), and handling an audience (judging the mood, fielding questions, and coping with hostility, should it arise). On every page, boxed tips, crisp graphics, mini case studies, sample material, and handy checklists make the whole process clear and easy to follow. Granted, if you're looking for very specific or in-depth guidance, you might find this book too cursory and general in its approach. But, if you're looking for a thumbnail guide to the basics, it'll do just fine.

        It's worth mentioning that the book is part of the "Essential Managers" series by reference publisher Dorling-Kindersley--a series comprising 20 itty-bitty books on business and career topics that range from communication, leadership, and decision-making to the management of time, budgets, change, meetings, people, projects, and teams. Combining the talent of the "For Dummies" book series for breaking down a lot of information into bite-sized bits and sidebars with Dorling-Kindersley's signature design style of crisp, classy graphics on a gleaming white backdrop, the books don't represent the cutting edge of business thinking or reflect necessarily any unique individual perspective. Instead, it's as if someone had collated the best general thinking on these 20 topics, and rolled them out into 72 brightly designed and easy-to-read pages--studded along the way with boxed tips, color shots of a multiracial cast of "coworkers" animatedly hashing through the workplace issues of the day, and, on the last few pages of each volume, a self-test of one's skills in the topic at hand. Again, they're not for anyone who's looking for more in-depth or focused help on any of the covered subjects, but they're perfect as a quick general-interest reference; and, let's face it, they're so damn cute, and look so smart in a neat little stack or row, that probably you'll want to buy a whole bunch to give as gifts to your entire staff or department. --Timothy Murphy

        I would much rather have someone else give the presentation, to be quite honest. So, I am giving this book to my husband. I thought the information in the book was practical and it enourages preparation. There is a section on how to reduce your fears of speaking in public.

        Knowing your audience, dealing with logistics, knowing your location, clarifying objectives, finding material, structuring material, writing a presentation, using audio-visual aids, rehearsing, preparing yourself and enhancing your body image are all good points. The avoiding bad habits section was especially good. I mean, if you stand in front of the baord, who can see it? If you slouch, it looks unprofessional.

        It all sounds so complicated...can't we just all head for the beach. ;> But seriously, this is a fun book filled with basic information for those who have to make presentations to keep others informed about business decisions.

        3 out of 5 stars Things I learned in Architecture School & The Military.......2001-06-13

        This books isn't a bad purchase for the price...it's a low cost, handy reference. It is worth the cover price, but most of what it teaches, I have already learned through attending that High Priced University and by joining the Military (Death by Power Point!) I guess it always helps to have a refresher course, and something to refer to in a tight spot. Design, remembering your audience, and how to speak in front of people...maybe I could have saved the college tuition if I had this book 10 years ago! Enjoy it when you get your copy!

          Like all the small handbooks in the DK series, Moi Ali's Effective Public Relations is a summary of the field. It's well-presented and easy to follow and covers traditional PR (not more modern techniques such as stunt marketing or stealth marketing).

          It wouldn't be enough to get you started in the PR business, but it's a useful refresher if you once had a course in college, or a helpful adjunct for professional marketers who work with PR counsel.

            This little book is packed with important information any small business or nonprofit should be aware of and use. And its price is less than what you will pay for a movie matinee special on a Saturday afternoon. While this book is small and short (only 72 pages), it covers all the basics for (1) getting your business known by potential clients and customers, (2) enhancing your business' reputation, and (3) helping with damage control when your business faces a crisis or problem. The print inside the book is small, so there is lots covered on each page.

            The book includes four chapters:

            1. Understanding Public Relations
            2. Developing PR Skills
            3. Working with the Media
            4. Producing Publicity

            The chapters and pages are highly formatted in order to pack a lot of information into the book. There are many pictures and diagrams in the book so it is not a boring treatise on the basics of PR. If you are looking for a publication on PR that you plan to read in an afternoon laying in bed under an electric blanket while snow falls outdoors, then this book is probably not for you. However, if you are responsible for the PR aspect of your business' marketing program and you are in the process of putting together a written PR plan and implementing that plan, then definitely get this book. 5 stars!
