Lederach's work stands at the forefront of the emergent field of conflict transformation study. A professor at Eastern Mennonnite University, he also has extensive field experience. In "Building Peace", he focuses upon the necessity of constructing relationships across multiple social levels, de-emphasizing the role of political elites, and instead focusing both upon mid-level elites (bureaucrats, intellectuals, "influential" persons) and grassroots-level activism. He also stresses the need to develop long-range objectives, to delink expectations of short-term results from questions of involvement, and the need for implementation of training programmes to create what might be termed a "culture of peace" within the society: trained mediators indigenous to the society. In doing this, the hope is that the "parachute" problem of credibility (the idea that mediators are dropped from the above---IGO/foreign gouvernment, etc---and have no particular attachment to the conflict) may be reduced, and transformation of the conflict may be initiated.

Lederach's work is exceptionally lucid, and he draws upon a smorgasbord of substantive examples. Highly recommended.

The Earth Charter in Action is a collection of over seventy thematic and descriptive essays inspired by Earth Charter, and demonstrating the rich diversity of its uses. It points toward the many possibilities of future utilization, including its ability to bridge the Islamic and Christian worlds and to work across the divide between the northern and southern hemispheres.

5 out of 5 stars The U.N. Global Agreement For Peace, Prosperity, and Sustainability.......2007-01-06

For many years now I have been wondering what an agreement on international cooperation that all nations could readily agree to would be comprised of. With the publication of The Earth Charter In Action, my musing is over. The Earth Charter is simple yet succinct; it is profound and compelling. The first paragraph from the PREAMBLE sets the tone:

"We stand at a critical moment in Earth's history, a time when humanity must choose its future. As the world becomes increasingly interdependent and fragile, the future at once holds great peril and great promise. To move forward we must recognize that in the midst of a magnificent diversity of cultures and life forms we are family and one Earth community with a common destiny. We must join together to bring forth a sustainable global society founded on respect for nature, universal human rights, economic justice, and a culture of peace. Towards this end, it is imperative that we, the people of Earth, declare our responsibly to one another, to the greater community of life, and to future generations."

The Earth Charter book has the entire Earth Charter document interspersed with commentaries from it's many contributors such as: Wangari Maathai, Mikhail Gorbachev, Jane Goodall, Peter Blaze Corcoran, et al. The Earth Charter website also has the entire Earth Charter in a viewable and downloadable format. There is a large and growing body of world-wide endorsers at the website and the list includes almost every country along with an impressive and varied list of NGOs, schools, business, religious groups, and individuals.

The Earth Charter will hopefully be the document that brings every person on Earth together for a peaceful, democratic, and sustainable future with a knowledge of our interconnectedness and interdependence not only amongst ourselves, but with all other life forms on Earth. My heartfelt thanks to the many contributors world-wide for this beautiful document!

Book Description

How can leaders craft political institutions that will sustain the peace and foster democracy in ethnically divided societies after conflicts as destructive as civil wars? Under turbulent conditions the leaders of ethnic groups, governments, and international organizations face the challenge of designing political arrangements that can simultaneously meet the tests of equal representation, democratic accountability, effective governance, and political stability. At critical junctures in the transition from intense (often violent) conflict, power-sharing arrangements may offer a compromise acceptable to most ethnic elites. Philip G. Roeder and Donald Rothchild find that these short-term accommodations come with high longer-term costs: the very institutions that provide a basis to end a conflict in an ethnically divided country may hinder the consolidation of peace and democracy over the longer term.

The contributors to Sustainable Peace examine institutional settlements in Ethiopia, Lebanon, India, and South Africa as well as the Soviet successor states, south Asia, central Africa, west Africa, and the Balkans. Roeder, Rothchild, and most of the contributors conclude that power-dividing, rather than power-sharing, solutions are more likely to result in durable political compacts and peace.

4 out of 5 stars power sharing not working?.......2006-04-07

The book starts off on a very topical and current note [circa 2006], by discussing the situation in Iraq, where a Shiite majority is trying to establish a majority rule in a newly [perhaps] democratic nation. Where here, perhaps refers to both the democratic and the nation. Certainly, the discussion on Iraq is meant to grab the reader's attention. Due to the still rapid unfolding of events in Iraq, you should be aware that the book tends to discuss other, more settled conflicts, like the Balkans.

The authors of the papers/chapters in this book argue that the traditional power sharing approach used in the aftermath of several civil conflicts offers little long term solace. At least in terms of building a lasting democracy. The conflicts analysed here often involved minority ethnic or regional groups that feared, perhaps rightly, a tyranny by the majority if a democracy was imposed or installed. A reflection of this is in the cynical phrase "one man, one vote, once", which was attributed to describe the newly independent African countries since the 1950s.

The book suggest that the power sharing might tend to freeze in the divisions already present in a country. Instead, alternative ways of divvying up the power are suggested, that might in the long run lead to a more sustainable and peaceful nation. Some readers might not necessarily agree with the conclusions presented, as being perhaps rather idealistic.

Building Sustainable Peace is an anthology of essays by learned contributors focusing on the complex problem of reconstructing and building a sustainable peace, particularly in Afghanistan and Iraq but also with an eye for other nations such as West Africa's Liberia and Sierra Leone. Individual selections include "Rethinking Humanitarian Intervention", "Praxis versus Policy", "From a Culture of Violence to a Culture of Peace", and many more. A serious-minded compilation that blends philosophy with a coldly practical eye for twentieth and twenty-first century conflicts and acts of terrorism and genocide. Numerous specific peace building strategies are exhaustively discussed in this heavily researched compendium particularly recommended for college libraries, activist organizations, and political science shelves.

    Book Description

Intense fighting in the Northern Region of Ghana in 1994 and 1995 led to the loss of 15,000 lives and the displacement of 200,000 people. A formal peace treaty, negotiated by the government, ended the fighting but did not address the underlying causes of the conflict, which was a complex mix of economic, political, and ethnic factors. An informal consortium of NGOs, initially involved in delivering humanitarian aid, set up a parallel peace process, seeking to build up trust through a series of peace-education workshops and the creation of a multi-ethnic Youth and Development Association. The success of the process was symbolized by the signing of the Kumasi Peace Accord in 1996.This report, commissioned by the Northern Ghana Inter-NGO Consortium, demonstrates how a network of NGOs, sharing skills and building up local capacities, can play an invaluable role in promoting a sustainable peace after conflict.

      Book Description

Building Sustainable World Peace under Jesus CEO: World Religious and Management Principles for Universal Peace by H.G. Liem was the product of many years of study, research, and experience. It included one year of full time research that started in March 2000. The project was vision driven. Author researched the viable methods to create world peace using related areas of study including management, history, applied philosophy, and religion. Author came up with the solution using a combination of thinking methods known by different terminologies including scientific thinking, lateral thinking, system thinking, holistic thinking, and transcendental thinking. In theistic religion, they are called the revelations of God.

This book implicitly presents the following theses in formulating world peace principles:

Thesis # 1: From Organizational Management point of view, the world needs one common CEO, one common vision of peace, and value-adding preferences. We must manage the world using the best organizational management knowledge we currently apply to large and complex organizations.

Thesis # 2: The Principles of World Peace must be measurable and founded on accurate historical data like any other areas of science. Unless they are founded on truth, they are simply empty theories that tend to be useless and even destructive. History has shown that the peace and prosperity of the world are founded on Jesus. As we stray away from Jesus, world problems increase.

Thesis # 3: Total Quality Management demands that we solve problems throughout all stages starting at the source. To foster sustainable world peace, we must proactively educate people to desire value-addingness starting as early as possible (source solution) so that they would become contributing members of society by their own free choices instead of simply by the bondage of the laws. That way, value-addingness gives them happiness and true freedom. It is not compassionate to let people live unsustainable happiness and punish them at the inspection line of the laws (tailpipe solution). Tailpipe solutions such as jail and warfare are expensive and inhumane, and should only be used as the last option.

Thesis # 4: To solve world problems, we need to deal with the reality of life. Since most people already believe in God, we need to use God to increase value-addingness in the world. Historically, there was no sustainable democracy apart from Jesus. Instead of suppressing religious believers, we need to encourage people to rigorously discuss and apply religious beliefs in a way that would promote universal peace.

Thesis # 5: The world needs to propagate the highest and most prevalent vision of world peace. Focus determines destiny. Without vision, people wander in the pursuit of self-happiness. This book explores the vision of peace that permeates the whole Bible: "God will bless all people on earth through Jesus." The Bible calls Jesus as the CEO of Peace with the responsibility to create peace on earth and goodwill in people. Historical data and ideological analysis tell us that the world will experience unprecedented peace and prosperity when we bond and align to Him. Through Jesus, people desire win-win happiness that builds up society and the world.

Thesis # 6: The world needs to propagate value-adding preferences such as agape-love and truth. Agape-love expresses itself in the preferences and behaviors that produce good deeds. Truth is the foundation to know and make sense of the world, just as it is the foundation of science. The ideology of Jesus is founded on the First and Second Greatest Commandments. The First Greatest Commandment is to love Yahweh our Elohim with all our heart and all our soul and all our mind. The Second Greatest Commandment is to love our neighbor as ourselves. Living the First Greatest Commandment unites the world into one team under one CEO of Peace. Living both commandments produces win-win, universal love. By understanding these two commandments, people can separate the true followers of God from the false followers.

Thesis # 7: The world needs to follow the CEO who has the power to unite the world into peace. This CEO needs to exemplify and teach agape-love and truth. He needs to transcend the world. For the CEO to be effective, the world needs to believe in His power to reward value-addingness and punish value-hoggingness. 9/11 terrorist attacks would not have happened if the jihadists had believed that they would end up in eternal damnation in Hell. This book shows that the world scriptures of Islam, Hindu, Buddhism, Judaism, Chinese, and Christianity all have prophesied of Jesus Christ as the only Savior. Knowing these scriptural verses lead people to Jesus and thus unites the world into one team under one CEO to pursue one common vision of sustainable world peace.

                  Book Description

The Weightless World is the first book to map an economic world that has been turned upside down by digital technology and global business. How will our careers, businesses, and governments change in a world where bytes are the only currency and where the goods that shape our lives--global financial transactions, computer code, and cyberspace commerce--literally have no weight? Addressing such problems as economic inequity and unemployment, Diane Coyle calls on individuals and governments to develop a new politics of weightlessness so that the economic benefits can be shared fairly. She proposes the creation of a "radical center" as the way to a new era of human creativity and economic prosperity.

                  4 out of 5 stars A Good Read!.......2001-06-02

U.S. Federal Reserve Board Chairman Alan Greenspan originated using "weightless" to describe computer-powered information technology. Diane Coyle employs his metaphor to explain that the European world is afflicted with unemployment and insecurity because of the evolution from industrial output to weightlessness. Her view of the new technology's international economic impact is distinctly European/British. She paints her strategy for managing the digital economy with a colorful but broad brush: better education, international ethical standards, governmental flexibility, liberalism. Her writing features quirky phrases, challenging sentence structure, and a few British spellings. Coyle includes surprising anecdotes and sparkling quotes from diverse sources - a valuable lexicon for further reading. We [...] recommend this book to those with an eclectic, liberal, literate, European view of the difference between the U.S. economic experience and that of the rest of the world. Such a reader will be delighted here.

4 out of 5 stars An interesting read about the future.......1999-12-04

An interesting read about the future, provocative optimism, and predictive anticipation for the future. Academic researchers will, however, find a missing link---that to theory. But, for the most part, well worth a quick read. The author shows the trees in a world where too many of us care about the trees.

3 out of 5 stars Low Carb exchanges.......2005-07-21

In reference to previous review-any diabetic, who has to watch their simple carb intake to live, knows that 1 carb exchange does equal 15 grams. That's the standard used by anyone, including doctors and dieticians for meal plans. As a diabetic, with a prescribed meal plan from a dietician, I am allowed anywhere from 45-75 grams of carbs for each meal, depending on which one of the three meals I am eating. This of course is also based on height and body weight. 20 grams of carbs per day is not healthy for a prolonged period of time. Best recomendation is moderation of a good mixture of fresh foods.

1 out of 5 stars Cookbook Title is Misleading.......2005-06-29

This cookbook is NOT low carb. The editorial statement says that in the book 1 carb equals 15g carbohydrate. Pa-lease, give us all a break, many low carbers do not use more than 20g carb per day...let alone 15g or more per meal.
