    5 out of 5 stars A far-sighted prophet.......2006-12-31

Even though Michael Young was clearly disturbed by the possibility of a society totally based on assigning educational & occupational positions to people based solely on "objective" indicators of merit -- mainly, IQ tests -- he nonetheless made a powerful case for why such a system could arise. Although he didn't credit Max Weber, Young's ideas about the rationalization of social life, based on ruthless means/ends assessments, clearly owe a huge debt to Weber. Young portrayed pre-WWII England as riven with class distinctions, with its economic & social institutions held back by the veneration of traditional elite privileges. Thus, his depiction of post 1959-England follows logically from his account of how various political parties and social movements championed replacing the old system with one that rewarded merit, not the legacies of birth. Most amazing to me is Young's prescient description of how a potent feminist movement arose in the 1960s & 70s to push for greater rewards to merit, regardless of gender. (Remember: he was writing in the late 1950s!) I highly recommend reading this book in conjunction with Jerome Karabel's book, The Chosen, which chronicles the growth of merit-based admissions policies at Harvard, Yale, and Princeton, in response to the same forces that Young describes (Karabel does cite Young's book). Despite its age, this book is most assuredly NOT dated! However, readers unfamiliar with English social history in the 20th century will no doubt miss a lot of Young's subtle satire.

4 out of 5 stars May have made too good a case!.......2003-07-29

Dr. Young gives us a description of a society that abolishes priority based on family lines, and instead is based on intellectual achievement. He warns us against the excesses of such a system, but he does it an interesting way that treads dangerous ground. His narrator is firmly in support of the meritocracy system, and is given great eloquence by the author. Much as Aldous Huxley did in Brave New World, the system he seeks to question is championed by a very effective communicator. Some readers may not realize that Young was NOT an ardent supporter of the meritocracy idea, such is the eloquence of the narrator in its support. An interesting book that contributes greatly to the discussion, both pro and con. The final lines were beneath the rest of the book. A fiction writer can always make his point by having the characters behave in keeping with his theory. The philosophy was much better.

        Book Description

While many have highlighted partisan differences over ideology and educational policies in the Jacksonian period, this study alternatively reveals an underlying philosophical consensus about citizenship training, or education, among opposing leaders of the political parties. Ironically, this consensus existed in tension with the stated ideals of each of the political parties, namely the Democrats, Whigs, and Workingmen. The Democrats and Workingmen were known for their rhetorical commitment to the values of equality and individualism, while the Whigs embraced conservative values, such as social harmony, as well as modern ones, such as individualism. The educational consensus, in its tendency to cultivate a passive citizenry, challenged many of these values, but accommodated socioeconomic conditions and the imperatives of a politics of mass parties. Passive citizens would be content to vote loyally for their party and to demand little to no input in the formation of its platform, habits that were crucial to the burgeoning party system at this time. In exposing such a substantive consensus in an area with profound effects for politics, this study questions the significance of rhetorical differences among the parties at this time and indeed challenges methodologies that rely solely on rhetorical analysis to understand partisan visions.

5 out of 5 stars exceptional historical study of freemasonry in Russia.......1999-08-31

With a wealth of archival sources previously unavailable, this first study of eighteenth-century Russian Freemasonry to appear in English examines the Masonic lodges and their meaning for the men who were drawn to them. As some of the earliest organizations in Russia to open membership beyond social class, the lodges offered the opportunity for social interaction, personal discipline, and a free exchange of ideas. Teaching new standards of civility and politeness, they helped to prepare the way for the birth of a civil society in Russia. WORKING THE ROUGH STONE reveals the private world of Masonic lodges and the significance of the brothers' rituals and practices. By "working the rough stone" of their inner thoughts and feelings, the social and intellectual leaders who belonged to the lodges sought to distinguish themselves as champions of moral enlightenment. As men of conscience and superior moral worth, many envisioned a future of social action that could bring about change without challenging the social and political precepts on which Russia's stability depended. In addition to exploring the inner workings of the Masonic lodges, WORKING THE ROUGH STONE shows how Freemasonry became part of a larger social transformation that saw the development of salons, literary circles, and learned societies. As quiet shelters for men of learning and conscience, these institutions offered a social alternative to life at the tsarist court. The lodges thus played an important role in fashioning personal and social identities at a time when questions of identity were widely debated in Russia. During the reign of Catherine the Great, the lodges were perceived as havens for democratic ideas dangerous to the aristocracy, and many of them were forced to close their doors. Freemasonry would eventually flourish again in Russia, although the lodges' fortunes have fluctuated with history's upheavals. For Smith, Freemasonry is a prism through which to view changes in Russian society Anyone interested in Russia, Europe during the Enlightenment, and the history of Freemasonry will find WORKING THE ROUGH STONE rich with insight into the hidden social nexuses that created cultural politics in the 18th century.

          Book Description

In a rapidly changing and inter-disciplinary world it is important to understand the nature and generation of knowledge, and its social organization. Increasing attention is paid in the social sciences and management studies to the constitution and claims of different theories, perspectives, and 'paradigms'. This book is one of the most respected and robust analyses of these issues. For this new paperback edition Richard Whitley - a leading figure in European business education - has written a new introduction which addresses the particular epistemological issues presented by management and business studies. He approaches the sciences as differently organized systems for the production and validation of knowledge - systems which become established in particular contexts and which generate different sorts of knowledge. He identifies seven major types of scientific field and discusses the establishment and growth of these sciences, including the major consequences of the nineteenth-century expansion of employment opportunities for researchers; the competitive pursuit of public reputations; and the domination of intellectual work by employees. He also examines the divergences in the way research is organized and controlled both in different fields, and in the same field within different historical circumstances. This book will be of interest to all graduate students concerned with the social study of knowledge, science, technology, and the history and philosophy of science.

This book traces the environment movement in Australia from the first visionaries who pressed for preservation of native fauna and for sanitation in cities to a mass social movement that challenges the most powerful interests in society. It covers the major environmental issues that have been at the forefront of Australian politics since the 1960s.

While in essence a history of a movement, covering over 200 years, this books brings the past to life, inciting the reader to search for deeper meaning, and seek out reasoning which may have previously been overlooked.

Another excellent feature is the colleciton of photos - I only wish there were more.

A fantastic read, for anyone interested in the environment movement, and in particular the politics and the people behind it. A book no university student in related fields should overlook.

            Book Description

Advocate and exemplar of women's education, female of aristocratic birth and modest demeanor, Anna Maria van Schurman (1607-1678) was one of Reformation Europe's most renowned writers defending women's intelligence. From her early teens, Schurman garnered recognition and admiration for her accomplishments in languages, philosophy, poetry, and painting. As an adult she actively engaged in written correspondence and debate with Europe's leading intellectuals. Nevertheless, Schurman refused to regard herself as an anomaly among women. A supporter of the female sex, she argues that the same rigorous education that shaped her should be made available to all Christian daughters of the aristocracy.

Gathered here in meticulous translation are Anna Maria van Schurman's defense of women's education, her letters to other learned women, and her own account of her early life, as well as responses to her work from male contemporaries, and rare writings by Schurman's mentor, Voetius. This volume will interest the general reader as well as students of women's, religious, and social history.

                    Book Description

There's something about sailing the ocean blue that whips up a hearty appetite. Good food--and plenty of it--makes for a successful and pleasurable cruise. Whether your shipboard facilities include a fully equipped modern galley or just a primitive one-burner stove, satisfy your hungry sailors with memorable meals. From Chapman, the most trusted boat experts, here are smart strategies for overcoming the limits of a seagoing kitchen plus a whole host of recipes that will gratify everyone and leave you with plenty of time to enjoy yourself, too. Some dishes can be prepared at home and reheated; others feature fresh ingredients that you can easily throw together on board; and still more rely on packaged ingredients--a perfect solution for a long cruise. Start with basics to build on--sauces and marinades, mixes for pancakes and cornbread, condiments and other embellishments. Put together a meal from individual recipes (like Homestyle Chicken Stew, Captain's Corned Beef Hash, Barbecued Shrimp Kebabs, Chef's Salad, Spicy Spinach, Provençal Potatoes, Cherry-Chocolate Brownies), or follow the complete menus, with shopping lists included. Every page has hints to ease your way. Bon voyage--and bon appétit!
