5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-03-27

Just finished reading it. Wow, what a mind trip. Fast shipment too!

4 out of 5 stars Investing for Dummies.......2005-05-03

I cant believe that I went through college without taking business or econ classes (except for political economy). This is a way for me to catch up.
I like this book because it is easy to read and understand. So easy even an elementary school kid could understand....ok maybe junior high.
Eventually I would hope to read the Intelligent Investor.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent basics.......2004-12-08

This book is excellent for learning the basic concepts in investing and finance. If you would like to iniciate in this area, i recommend this book as an entry door with the basics.

5 out of 5 stars The Best.......2004-05-25

As many have said in their reviews, this is a great starting point for those new to investing and financial markets. In fact, it's the best I've ever found and I've looked a lot. The simple, plain English explanations are what makes this book stand out. For the nuances and more detailed information regarding the topics in the book, look to a textbook from a college finance class. But for the person who knows very little, start with this.

4 out of 5 stars Good for beginner investors.......2004-05-23

If you are new to investing and need a simple primer, read this book. It's well organized and written. Those that have invested for a while will find this book simplistic. Nevertheless, I think every beginning investor should get a copy and read it.

3 out of 5 stars There is an alternative........2007-08-20

WSJ Guide to Money is out of print. That is why the cost has gone through the roof. Standard and Poor's Guide to Money and Investing (Standard & Poor) The Standard and Poors Guide to Money is by the same authors and is even a year more current. Take a look at the cover you can even see that it is the same book and that all that was done is WSJ in the title is changed to "Standard and Poors Guide to Money and Investing". Same book by the same author. The only difference is that is is in print so the price is reasonable.

4 out of 5 stars Handy Little Book.......2007-05-03

Although this isn't the largest book in the world, I really enjoyed reading it. I thought that I was pretty savvy as far as the way things worked, but this book definitely enlightened me. I also appreciated the pictures that made things clearer.

4 out of 5 stars A little bit tough to read, but worth it........2007-04-28

If you're a beginner, interested in investing, this is a very decent primer to start with. Buy it with Eric Tyson's Investing for Dummies, and you'll be fully set!

A nice introduction to wall street if you were raised on Mars. For people who want to do investing for a living this is a waste of time

4 out of 5 stars To get the whole picture.......2006-12-22

I think this book did a great job in helping me understand the universe of money and investing beyong the scope of stock. I have been trading for 1 year and wanted to buy a small book that gave me a general education on the subject. Although much more can be written on each topic covered it is good for beginning to understand the whole picture.

                        Book Description

Architects of Our Fortunes is the first publication of the Civil War letters and journals of Eliza A. W. Otis and her husband, Harrison Gray Otis, who went on to become the publishers of the Los Angeles Times. These intimate letters and journal entries reveal an earlier and simpler chapter in their lives, when he was a printer who joined the Union army and she was a poet and teacher who traveled through the Upper South to stay close to her soldier husband. Their writings reflect their love for each other, the fears aroused by the war, and the shaping of their ambitions and moral purpose by the forces of history in a tumultuous time.
The book is divided into three parts. The first documents are letters written from Harrison to Eliza just after their marriage in 1859. Eliza's journal, which she kept from 1860 to 1863, forms the second, much longer, section. The journal draws a highly readable portrait of this young newlywed, whose thoughts and experiences tell us much about the women of her era. Her candid comments on the people around her are especially revealing of her own character and of Victorian sensibility. The final section, a brief Civil War diary written by Harrison in the field from 1862 to 1863, provides a common soldier's view of that great struggle.
The three sets of documents shed light not only on the Otis family but also on the experience of ordinary Americans during the Civil War. They also suggest the widespread impact of the war on the development of the West. Harrison and Eliza Otis were but two of the thousands of soldiers and their families who resettled in California after the war to begin a new life. The experience and ideals expressed in the documents in this book were widely shared. The emergence of the Otises as major public leaders in Southern California and the success of the Los Angeles Times grew out of their struggle during the Civil War years and the values they forged as a consequence of that conflict.

4 out of 5 stars The Civil War through the eyes of two literary stars.......2001-07-14

My review may be somewhat prejudiced because Ann Condon and I collaborated on our books. Ann has taken the diaries and correspondence of two literary figures from southern California whose writing efforts may have started in the mountains of West Virginia during the Civil War and put them together in a fine book. Dr. Condon sets the stage for the works of Harrison Gray and Eliza Otis with an introduction to this husband and wife team. The diary of Eliza Otis is particularly well writen and a wonderful insight to a woman's view of the Civil War. Her descriptions of the wild country of the Kanawha, New and Gauley River country of West Virginia are exceptional. What is sad from a historian's perspective is that these writers did not continue their diaries beyond the summer of 1863 or that they are not available. This wonderful book provides a view of the Civil War beyond battles and campaigns giving a wonderful insight of the time.

The risk of accident was considerable. A gun might go off by mistake, a wounded buck might charge, the cattle might trample you, or a fall on one of the smooth boulders might result in a fractured thigh, yet we were never less than eighty miles from a doctor, and often over two hundred miles away from one. The fever and the complaints resulting from it were, however, our worst enemies.

                                Book Description

This book is based on the true story of an Oregon youth who surveyed on the West Coast and worked in the Detroit court system before following in the footsteps of his famous uncle on the University of Michigan football team. After college he worked on dam construction in California prior to joining the Army Air Corps, where he acquired the nickname "Crash" from his fellow cadets by surviving several crack-ups.

Released by the Army due to the Great Depression and unable to find work, he finally re-enlisted as a private and was sent to the Philippine Islands. Eventually he bought his way out of the military and flew for a small commercial airline in the Islands, experiencing many narrow escapes flying through typhoons and piloting mining engineers to remote areas, at times accompanying them in their treks deep into snake-and crocodile-infested jungles.

Returning to the States, he learned of Colonel Chennault's need for pilots in China and joined him there, instructing the Chinese to fly against the Japanese who were at the time conducting regular bombing on their cities.

                                        Book Description

In her autobiography, the remarkable feminist and social worker Alice Salomon recounts her transition in the 1890s from privileged idleness to energetic engagement in solving social problems. Salomon took the lead in establishing the profession of social work, and built a career as a social reformer, activist, and educator. A prolific author, Salomon also played a key role in the transatlantic dialogue between German and American feminists in the early twentieth century. Her narrative concludes with the account of her expulsion from Germany by the Nazis in 1937.
Salomon's formative influence on the field of social work makes her story crucial for the history of the discipline. This work will also appeal to anyone with an interest in the history of the feminist and socialist movements or the political and social history of twentieth-century Germany. The volume also includes several of Salomon's essays on social work and women's issues, along with photographs of Salomon, her students, and her colleagues.
Andrew Lees is Professor and Chair of the History Department at Rutgers University, Camden.
