Book Description
When many people retire, they discover to their dismay that they're no longer in Who's Who, but in Who's He? The psychological change is much greater than they'd expected, but it doesn't have to be that way. In fact, the Third Act can be the best part of anybody's life.Customer Reviews:
Act Three (if you have lots of money).......2003-06-24
Also, in several places you will find the myth that people who don't work have a meaningful life. This is absolutely not true.
The one plus for the book are the resources given Appendix B. Some of the things listed look like they have value to the non-wealthy.
A Self-Serving, Unimportant Book.......2002-07-30
Iýve got a pile of newspaper and magazine and even web-based articles by journalists with apparently no near-term plans to retire who build articles around quotes from financial planners with the same mindset. In these articles, we get forewarnings about possible problems and disappointments with retirement: ýa life of leisure is not all itýs cracked up to beý or ýpeople discover a year or so into retirement that hitting the golf course daily is boring and traveling is tiring.ý These are direct quotes from a recent article written by an Eileen Ambrose from the Baltimore Sun, who gives us this other tidbit: ýExecutives miss the deference once shown by underlings now that they are merely among other retirees.ý Do you believe that? She seems to be saying that, to some, spending the rest of oneýs life ýmerely among other retireesý would be a fate worse than death! And this leads us to a review of Mr. Bronfmanýs new book.
The thesis of The Third Act seems to be that it is not only right, but also very possible, if you work at it, for folks who were prestigious and important in their work life to retain similar status and recognition in retirement. To prove his point, the author brings us name after name of big shots, what they did in their careers and what they are doing or plan to do in retirement. The end result, unfortunately, is a self-serving, name-dropping effort that tries to make us believe that the author and his buddies are on to something unique in their quests for a meaningful retirement.
I think the book is baloney. Youýll find no retired bus drivers or ex-cops or clerks from back offices featured here. No, every ýretiredý person introduced in this book is 1) a big shot by definition and 2) a dear friend of the author. Wouldnýt it be really nice if all the big shots, including the author himself, had the opportunity to write a good-selling book about themselves and their buddies in retirement? Such a system would keep them where they deserve to be: in the limelight and gaining income at the same time. Baloney!
Starting with the author, who really is writing a book about himself more than anything else, the people in the book are those of privilege. His father, for example, ran The Seagram Company, and his son, the author, became CEO after him, and, guess what, the authorýs son took over after him. In this theme, the author introduces former president Jimmy Carter right off as ýan excellent exemplar of the vitality and promise of the Third Act.ý Not exactly a typical retiree, of course. When Carter finds that heýs a million bucks in debt when he leaves the White House, he simply signs for a book deal to wipe that out. Boy, do we learn something there that will help other retirees be successful. Not!
Then there is the overachieving Dr. C. Everett Koop, who the author says will be ýgoing full speed until the day he dies.ý While this goal may be a worthy one in retirement, who is the enemy? In the book, Koop goes on to define his fear that he may become like others he knows in retirement who ýcease to be interested in life and follow their wives around the supermarket.ý Again, surely a fate worse than death, like, Iýd guess, a former sports star relegated to sitting on the bench. Baloney!
We are introduced to lawyers and CEOs, directors of art galleries and presidents of Universities, and, perhaps most importantly, celebrities. Walter Cronkite and Mike Wallace make the list, but the most unabashedly silly parts of the book are reserved for ýmy friend Kitty Carlisle Hart.ý She offers other retirees or soon-to-be-retirees such important advice as ýIým out every day and every night, and Iým always put together. Iýve got my makeup on, my hair done, and I have a nice dress. Whatever else may come my way, Iým up, Iým out and I look good.ý Cool!
The author tells us that he and his wife met Ms. Carlisle years ago while on a trip to Jamaica, where he shares with us that he ýleaned over and lightly kissed those smiling lips.ý An important insight, for sure. Later, the author says, ýKitty is real tonic. Sheýs charming, beautiful, and tough as steel. She personifies the can-do factor so necessary in the Third Act.ý While this may be true, we doubt if she would have made the book if her name didnýt precede her.
While the book is a light, quick read and will not hurt anyone in the process of its publication, it is, again, in my opinion, a bust as far as providing meaningful insight for retirees or soon-to-be retirees. For those looking for better guidance and deeper insight, might I recommend "breaking the watch," by Joel Savishinsky and "The Joy of Not Working," by Ernie Zelinski

Damage Them All You Can: R.E. Lee's Army of No. Va........2002-12-28
Walsh's book is a true delight to read, the principles in the book seem to come alive as you read on in the book. The prose is written with vivid descriptions and the author gives the reader insights albeit shrewd of how the battles were fought.
I got the inpression that I was there with the incisive insights the author gives the reader, from the Generals, to the commanders, right down to the trenches, told with deeply moving detail. I encourage anyone interested in reading about the Civil War or the "Yankee War of Aggression" to read this book.
I've read Foote, McPherson, and Catton's writings about this time in American History, but Walsh's account here is the best and most personal one that I've ever read, with a probing into the character and the battles that made them feel like they were fought right before your eyes.
This book is, by all accounts, for a single volume the best book written about one of the best fighting armies the Confederacy ever had... the Army of Northern Virginia. This book is worthy of a place in your library on American History.

ASIN: 0807843741 |
Book Description
Since its original publication in 1987, Channels of Discourse has provided the most comprehensive consideration of commercial television, drawing on insights provided by the major strands of contemporary criticism: semiotics, narrative theory, reception theory, genre theory, ideological analysis, psychoanalysis, feminist criticism, and British cultural studies. The second edition features a new introduction by Robert Allen that includes a discussion of the political economy of commercial television. Two new essays have been addedone an assessment of postmodernism and television, the other an analysis of convergence and divergence among the essaysand the original essays have been substantially revised and updated with an international audience in mind. Sixty-one new television stills illustrate the text.
Each essay lays out the general tenets of its particular approach, discusses television as an object of analysis within that critical framework, and provides extended examples of the types of analysis produced by that critical approach. Case studies range from Rescue 911 and Twin Peaks to soap operas, music videos, game shows, talk shows, and commericals.
Channels of Discourse, Reassembled suggests new ways of understanding relationships among television programs, between viewing pleasure and narrative structure, and between the world in front of the television set and that represented on the screen. The collection also addresses the qualities of popular television that traditional aesthetics and quantitative media research have failed to treat satisfactorily, including its seriality, mass production, and extraordinary popularity.
The contributors are Robert C. Allen, Jim Collins, Jane Feuer, John Fiske, Sandy Flitterman-Lewis, James Hay, E. Ann Kaplan, Sarah Kozloff, Ellen Seiter, and Mimi White.

Carole Pegg Manufacturer: University of Washington Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 0295980303 |

This book celebrates the power of music, dance, and oral narrative to create identities by imaginatively connecting performers and audiences with ethnic and political groupings, global and sacred landscapes, histories and heroes, spirits and gods.Three distinct cultural eras of Mongolian society are represented. Many Mongols are now performing publicly the diverse traditions of Old Mongolia that they practiced in private following the communist revolution of 1921; some are perpetuating the Soviet transformations of those traditions introduced prior to 1990; and yet others are dipping their curly-toed boots into new performance arts as they revel in musical encounters on the global stage. By highlighting the sheer variety of repertories, this book illustrates the rich diversity of Mongolia's peoples and performance arts.
An accompanying compact disc contains musical examples linked to the text.
