Very average book.......2007-03-04
From my perspective this is a quite average book. You find some interesting charts and amazing facts. But in fact the book is riding the commodity investment theme. Apart from this there is little discussion which companies will profit from a rising Asia...
Asia, a great opportunity.......2006-06-27
China and India, among other economies in Asia, are a tremendous opportunity to profit from their continuous growth. In his book, Mr. Mostrous show us the road to make it happen.
Excellent Overall Perspective.......2006-06-25
Not only on Asia, but some excellent historical perspective on the U.S. markets as well. If you've been wondering about all this talk regarding globalization and how it may affect your investing in the future, this book is a solid read. I would not recommend this for the novice investor but a more intermediate to somewhat seasoned investor.
Global changes, investment opportunities and risks. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did........2006-06-25
An amazing book on everything to changes in different types of food people eat as they have more disposable income to how petroleum is refined into gasoline and different grades of crude. The book is mostly about changes in India and China and the promise and peril of possible investments in these countries with an emerging middle class.
Numerous other important topics that are too numerous to mention. Books about the future and investment themes are not easy to construct if well thought out and with specific, practical, and meaningful suggestions, in this case investment advice. One also has to be open minded and humble, and at the same time confident which the authors seem to be. I think this book accomplishes the above and is a triumph of connecting numerous (moving) dots with expertise and what appears to be a significant amount of research.
This is a well written book. I am a tough grader, but I give it five stars.
An interesting argument for investing strongly in the booming economy in Asia.......2006-05-23
Centuries ago the old silk road and then the spice routes helped enrich Europe for centuries and helped spark the rise of the merchant classes in Italy and other countries. This book makes that case that the Western nations have matured and are actually stagnating while Asia (including India) are benefiting from explosive growth. Since over half the world's populations live in this region, the growth of these economies will make them world economic powers in the decades to come. The authors even make the case for them becoming dominant economic powers.
If you buy into their story, and they are persuasive, you will want to read this book and think about ways to benefit from investing in this growth. After all, it is easier to grow when you start near zero than when you are near one-hundred percent. The book uses all kinds of trends, charts, and stories to make their case.
I will only add two words of caution. First, beware of using the past to predict the future. To quote the economist Herb Stein, "If a trend can't continue, it won't." And as for investing in Asia being different this time, remember the sage advice that whenever someone says to you, "This time it is different" you need to lock you wallet in your safe and change the combination.
The second caution is that there are real risks to property and returns in these countries. You cannot assume that they will treat your invested principle and your gains with the same respect for property (such as it is) as exists in the West. If it suits their interest to change the rules mid-stream, they might well do so. So, be careful.
There is no doubt that there is huge opportunity in Asia and many will find superior returns there. You may be one of them. But many will also acquire losses and make capital gains possible for others. You might be one of them.

Customer Reviews:
What an awesome book!!.......2003-12-07
This was the best book I've ever read concerning finances and heavenly treasures. Robert Katz has that special ability to take a difficult subject to make it simply understandable. He brings to light biblical principals that now appear obvious after reading his book. I love his stories. I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking a deeper understanding of God's true purpose in their lives and in their business. P.S. Be sure to get his first book, 'Money Came by the House the Other Day'. This first book will give you detailed information on how to get your personal finacial house in order.
Purpose Driven Spending.......2003-11-05
In a world where so many are looking for life's purpose, "Biblical Roads to Financial Freedom" makes it clear what purpose God has in mind for our finances. It is a "heads up" approach to meaningless spending and materialism. This book doesn't tell you where to get a bandaid for your debt problem, but rather a heart transplant, performed by the Great Physician Himself. This is a "must have" for every family!
True Prosperity.......2003-11-05
With all the mixed messages on biblical prosperity, this book stands out as a guide to the readers on true prosperity both spiritual and physical. If you feel like you just cannot get a grip on your finances, this book will bring you back to the basics: our relationship with God.

This is an attempt to understand Mexico's steep descent into turmoil, which happened rapidly after the uprising in Chiapas on New Year's Day 1994. Following the assassinations of a presidential candidate and then the congressional leader, President Carlos Salinas de Gortari had barely left office when the peso collapsed. Pursued by allegations of corruption, Salinas then fled the country. Oppenheimer, a reporter for The Miami Herald, argues that the crisis is the result of nothing grander than a turf war within a decrepit ruling party and that the Chiapas uprising is not something new, just another eruption of the Marxist intellectualism that has long flourished in Latin America.

Should be required reading.......2003-05-04
This book is so shocking, it left me hoping the author made it all up. It raises many important questions regarding the US relationship with out southern neighbor. A must read.
GOOD HISTORY, WELL RESEARCHED, FAST PACED READ.......2003-04-12
In Bordering on Chaos, Oppenheimer does a very good job of depicting the events and digging up the dirty that led to many of the most important events in mid-1990s Mexico, including the murder of the leading presidential candidate, the rise of the Zapatistas and the choice of Zedillo for president.
However, instead of pure history, we are presented with deep character development for the two main actors in this process, Zedillo himself (the president to be) and Subcomandante Marcos, the leader of the Zapatista movement. In this process, we learn of the political ploys adopted by the PRI, the almost monarchic party that led the country for most of the century. These include forays into education, health, and the most important social services. Another important area is the corruption going on at the top levels of the PRI, requiring, for example, that business people contribute a minimum of [several] million to participate in the government, or else be excluded, with all that it entailed. There is less than I would like to know on Carlos Salinas, the now disgraced but formerly darling leader.
Overall, a good history and a well written book. If you have an interest in Mexico, or in the crisis period of the mid-1990s, this may offer some of the pieces that build up a puzzle of it.
Facinating account.......2001-12-14
This is a great read for anyone wanting to know about Mexico during the 1990s. It's very indepth, at times it feels like maybe Oppenheimer doesn't have all the information to tell the story, but he sure tells a lot of it. It's also not overly biased, like many books about recent Mexican history. Oppenheimer does a great job of setting the scene, explaining who is who, and helping the reader get their arms around all the different factions that make for a volatile social environment in Mexico. I also read "Castro's Final Hour" which was informative, but not as good (especially since the "final hour" was somewhere in the early nineties, and now it's 2001). I'd love to read more of Oppenheimer.
Andresito has excellent contacts.......2001-02-17
Excellent book on recent Mexican history.
Excellent. Give Us More........2000-12-07
The dearth of good books on Mexico makes this one very welcome. It's architecture rests largely on two character portraits: one of Ernesto Zedillo, and the other of the man who calls himself Subcommander Marcos. There is some sketchy material, too, on Carlos Salinas, but it's the type of data that adds to the enigma of the man rather than to our understanding of him.
With Zedillo, one can see why two huge accomplishments coincided with his term in office, and went largely unlauded: 1) the payback of the bailout money ahead of time, and 2) the holding of real elections.
Oppenheimer shows Zedillo to be honest and smart--unlike many Mexican politicians, his degree from an Ivy League school was not just window dressing; he really is a trained economist. But he was not very popular. As an uncorruptible technocrat, he never would have gotten the nod to be the new president if not for the assassination of Colosio, whose campaign manager he was at the time of the murder. But once he was thrust in by Fate to the number one spot, he proved unusually effective. He was not fashionable or charismatic, and not very well loved by the electorate, which understandably blamed him for the devaluation which occurred at the very beginning of his term. Carlos Salinas was fashionable and charismatic, and there can be little doubt that the conditions necessitating the devaluation accumulated during his term.
Even now, with Zedillo gone, those two accomplishments loom over the future more powerfully than anything else that has happened in Mexico for many years. The payback of the bailout money signals that though there may be stumbles on the way to free trade with the US, a quick recovery is possible instead of a long Japanese-style tailspin. The bailout money could have gone into the pockets of well-placed Mexicans, (where now are the millions that the World Bank poured into Russia?) but it did not. I would guess that a lot of credit for that goes to the unfashionably honest Zedillo.
The conversion to a truly multiparty system where it is possible for anyone to win also bodes well for the future, both economically and culturally. Mexico could have started having real elections a long time ago, elections that were more than just costly and showy formalities, but it did not. They didn't have a real election until it was time to replace Zedillo. The irony is that a corrupt system put into power an honest man, who then reformed it.
The other character that makes this book work is Rafael Guillen, AKA Subcommander Marcos, the leader of the Zapatista uprising, who turns out to be neither an Indian nor a peasant nor even a native of Chiapas, but simply a garden variety marxist from a middle class family in Tampico. An undereducated and underworked lout, he acquired a degree from the National Autonomous University of Mexico with a dissertation on capitalist oppression (what else?). Employing in this dissertation a style reminiscent of the Unabomber, he revealed the family to be the first "unit of oppression", followed by schools, the second "unit of oppression", and so on. The only thing that can break this ubiquitous oppression, according to the budding Subcommander, is "proletarian politics".
Oppenheimer doesn't go into how this ideological huckster managed to convince the peasants of Chiapas he could help them--that would be an excellent and highly entertaining book in itself--, but he does show clearly what type of person cooked up the rebellion, which did no good for anyone. In short, it was the kind of person without enough sense to use something other than a ski mask (wool?) to disguise himself in the tropics.
By making plain the character of these two men, Oppenheimer adds much to our understanding of what has gone on in Mexico in the last few years. Still, much goes unanswered, such as the actual legality or illegality of the billionaires' banquet, where each of thirty rich men pledged $25 million to the PRI for the election of 1994. Oppenheimer tells of what a scandal there was when the publication El Economista broke the story, but doesn't say whether anyone was prosecuted or even had in fact broken the law. The implication of the secrecy of the banquet and the subsequent scandal, is that there are legal limits on campaign contributions in Mexico, as there are in the US. I'm not sure this is the case.
If in fact there are no legal limits, it becomes a question of whether Mexicans in general disapproved of their richest compatriots throwing their financial weight around. It's to Oppenheimer's credit that he notes the alternative to wealthy men giving dizzying sums to the PRI, which is the Mexican government giving dizzying sums to the PRI, which is the way it had been done since the Revolution.
Frankly, if I were a Mexican taxpayer, I'd rather the PRI got its money from the billionaires.

like being at the candy store........2001-08-20
Hmmm. where to start. Endless resources and contacts make this book the single best investment I've made to spread my music to radio, 'Zines, mp3stations and the like. The only downfall is, while it saves you ALOT of legwork (and guesswork), it only lists the URL's of each entry. Ya gotta score the contact names and email addresses on your own...and a few of the links are now defunct.A form to order a free update is included, though, so ya really can't go wrong.

Book Description
Declared dead some twenty-five years ago, the idea of freedom of contract has enjoyed a remarkable intellectual revival. In The Fall and Rise of Freedom of Contract leading scholars in the fields of contract law and law-and-economics analyze the new interest in bargaining freedom.
The 1970s was a decade of regulatory triumphalism in North America, marked by a surge in consumer, securities, and environmental regulation. Legal scholars predicted the âdeath of contractâ and its replacement by regulation and reliance-based theories of liability. Instead, we have witnessed the reemergence of free bargaining norms. This revival can be attributed to the rise of law-and-economics, which laid bare the intellectual failure of anticontractarian theories. Scholars in this school note that consumers are not as helpless as they have been made out to be, and that intrusive legal rules meant ostensibly to help them often leave them worse off. Contract law principles have also been very robust in areas far afield from traditional contract law, and the essays in this volume consider how free bargaining rights might reasonably be extended in tort, property, land-use planning, bankruptcy, and divorce and family law.
This book will be of particular interest to legal scholars and specialists in contract law. Economics and public policy planners will also be challenged by its novel arguments.

Book Description
After three decades of successive rounds of negotiations, the EC Convention on Insolvency Proceedings was finally signed on November 23, 1995. Several drafts were discussed and abandoned in the process. This book offers an introductory insight to the 1995 EC Insolvency Convention, beginning with the basic structure of the Insolvency Convention. The 1995 Insolvency Convention equalizes the rights of creditors in the EU on a cross-border perspective by means of a mandatory dividend-received deduction for creditors and a surplus-transfer in favor of the main proceedings. It ensures the equality and uniformity of rights and obligations arising out of the Convention, both for the Contracting States and the parties concerned. For this purpose, it confers on the Court of Justice of the European Communities (ECJ) jurisdiction to rule on the interpretation of its provisions. The Convention represents a major step forward in the international regulation of cross-border insolvencies. It provides a framework of well defined, enforceable rights which will enable a high degree of intra community cooperation. While not a cure-all, for the first time in many years, a European Community (EC) mechanism for a better and more efficient international cooperation is really at hand. The author provides a unique perspective: he was co-author of the explanatory report to the Convention. In this distinctive work, he offers his own personal views on the subject. This unmatched perspective, the comprehensiveness of the work s treatment, and the topicality of the Convention itself make this an important resource for academics and practitioners.

Book Description
In recent years experience has shown that the complex issues raised by cross-border insolvencies cannot be adequately addressed by existing national bankruptcy law regimes. In order to deal effectively with such emerging factors as multi-jurisdictional intellectual property rights and contractual issues surrounding employment or immovable property -- as well as such long-standing problem areas as choice of law and recognition of judgments -- a system of international bankruptcy and insolvency law is sorely needed. This important monograph shows how such a system is ready to hand in Europe and potentially available at a global level. As an obvious step in this direction, Professor Torremans examines the EU Regulation on Insolvency Proceedings. He analyses all its provisions in detail, and sets out the solution it puts in place, partial and imperfect as it may be. He concludes that within the EU this Regulation promises to improve matters substantially, and that it bodes well to become a model for international co-operation in this area. To demonstrate the need for a coherent cross-border insolvency law regime, Professor Torremans first describes two very different national approaches, those of Belgium and the United Kingdom. He explores these two traditional approaches in detail, stressing their practical applications, and finds neither system can offer a satisfactory solution in a cross-border context. Finally, recognising that this problem does not stop at the EU's borders, Professor Torremans examines the UNCITRAL Model Law in detail to see whether it does indeed make a useful contribution. Towards a European Bankruptcy and Insolvency Law is a valuable and highly practical analysis that can immediately be put to good use by practitioners and officials charged with the organisation of bankruptcy and insolvency proceedings anywhere in the world.
