    Book Description

Over the last fifteen years the world's largest developing countries have initiated market reforms in their electric power sectors from generation to distribution. This book evaluates the experiences of five of those countries - Brazil, China, India, Mexico and South Africa - as they have shifted from state-dominated systems to schemes allowing for a larger private sector role. As well as having the largest power systems in their regions and among the most rapidly rising consumption of electricity in the world, these countries are the locus of massive financial investment and the effects of their power systems are increasingly felt in world fuel markets. In-depth case studies also reveal important variations in reform efforts. This accessible volume explains the origins of these reform efforts and offers a theory as to why - despite diverse backgrounds - reform efforts in all five countries have stalled in similar ways.

Since the late 1970s China has made extensive policy reforms and infrastructure investments. Although there have been significant investments made over the past decades, most of these investments came from the public sector. The goal of this report is to help improve China's approach to private participation in infrastructure focusing on roads, water and sanitation, and power generation by expanding foreign direct investment and domestic financing in such projects. It compares China's experience with those of other countries.

4 out of 5 stars problems of success.......2006-09-21

The amazing rise of China is reflected in it now being the world's second largest electricity user, behind only the US. The authors of this OECD report study how China is expecting to handle continued power growth. Several aspects are analysed.

One being the reduction in coal pollution. For the near future, coal will be used to supply most of the electricity. Unfortunately, the coal burning plants are one of the biggest airborne polluters in China. With very bad effects on the health of people. Thus the government is incorporating environmental costs into the pricing structure of coal supplies. This should act as an incentive for power plants to do more filtering of pollutants. To most Chinese, coal pollution is perhaps the most visible and most negative aspect of their electricity supply.

Other topics in the book include a more transparent pricing scheme for transmission of electricity in a national grid. The intent here is to enable a rational and efficient investment in upgrading the grid. A cost plus approach has been suggested by the government, which amounts to an effective setting of a rate of return on investments in the grid.

Despite the many real problems described by the book, the reader should keep in mind that these are all problems of success. Other less developed nations might wish for such problems.

                Book Description

The road to an objective analysis of an energy system is called "Integrated Energy Analysis" and covers a cradle-to-grave system approach. This book contains such an analysis of the electricity energy system in Shandong-Province, one of China's 32 Provinces. It also presents a decision support analysis tool. It should allow decision makers in China to choose the right system of electricity supply with minimum environmental impact and/or minimum "true" cost.

The book contains a DVD, which contains a more extensive record of the research results obtained. It also contains all the tools, which have been developed. The methodology presented in this book and DVD is easily applicable to other Provinces in China and also other countries and regions. This research presents a pioneering effort in bringing together the three essential partners for any such research program, Industry, Academia and the Stakeholders, i.e. prospective users of the results. An important aspect of this international program with 75 participants was the leadership provided by a dedicated and professional Program Management Team from Industry.

Developing a sustainable energy supply in China is an essential part of a global strategy to promote development while mitigating environmental pollution and the effect of greenhouse gas emissions.

                    Book Description

Challenging the stereotype of premodern China as an agricultural nation, this book examines the development of the maritime sector, maritime institutions, and sea power in the premodern era. Initially discussing topics related to China's exports, such as ship design and construction, goods produced solely for export, capital accumulation and investment in the maritime sector, and trade networking, the volume goes on to consider the impact of maritime institutions, governmental trade and non-trade policies, and Confucian attitudes toward maritime activities. Finally, the book shows how China obtained technological, economic, and naval supremacy in Asian waters until the 18th century and goes on to discuss the reasons for the decline of the maritime sector in the 19th century.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Resource for Mastering the Concept of Value-Added Selling.......2007-02-23

This book is the definitive and primary source for value-added selling. Tom Reilly is by far the most knowledgeable and articulate spokesperson on this topic. This book sets the ground rules and provides a specific, how-to-do-it way to become a master at value-added selling.

There have been scores of books published that attempt to accomplish what this book accomplishes in the sense that the others are strictly "Johnny-come-latelies." Anyone who does like or appreciate this book certainly does not understand sales and the contemporary role that value-added selling plays in today's sales world.

One of the book's best ideas is how to present your price and stack your benefits relative to how your prospect wants to perceive value. That concept alone is worth the price of the book.

5 out of 5 stars Just Closed Largest Order and Made $$$$.......2007-02-23

I have been a professional salesperson for over two decades, and have sold all over the world. Finding a sales book that actually makes me money is difficult. Most sales books are very general and motivational based. Tom Reilly is right on target. This is not the first book I have read from this author. Crush Price Objections and Coaching For Sales Success were two books that I found to be excellent. His book Value Added Selling is even better. If you want to become a multi-million dollar producer, the ideas in this book will make it happen. I don't give my commission away anymore. I am an avid reader of sales books and consider this one of the best sales books written. I just closed one of the largest orders (profitable) in my sales career using tips from this book.

3 out of 5 stars Great content shaby book.......2007-02-15

Like the content. But needs a value added hardcover printer. You open the book and right away the spine breaks wherever you open it at. Very sad. If you cant make a quality hardcover then stick with the soft cover.

Strange that he talks so much about value but then uses a shabby printer to print his book. I would have paid a couple extra dollars for better quality.

I do admit that the contents are great. Would buy again

                    3 out of 5 stars Not a great read.......2007-02-10

Perhaps it's because this is old information to me but I found this book to be tedious and rather uninteresting. I must admit I stopped reading it and put it up for sale. But this is just my personal opinion. Others may find it very useful. I certainly do believe in value added selling.

                    5 out of 5 stars Value-Added Selling at it's best !!!!.......2006-08-23

This has to be one of the greatest books on selling I have ever read.

The common sense approach and detailed ideas are easy to understand and follow.

If your not Value-Added Selling in todays market then this book is a must read.

                      Book Description

This book teaches salespeople how to sell the total value that they bring to the table. Most companies fail to get full credit for everything they do for the customer. Value Added Selling Techniques instructs salespeople how to sell value, not price. Value added salespeople are encouraged to make a difference with their customer, not just a deal.
