Three Classic Novels Of Other Worlds.......2007-07-03
Henry Kuttner was one of the most prolific and creative of the writers of the so-called "Golden Age" of science fiction. This volume contains three complete novels, taken from the pages of Startling Stories magazine during this literary period: The Portal In The Picture, Valley Of The Flame, and The Dark World. All three, it should be noted, were collaborations between Henry Kuttner and his wife Catherine (who was a superior writer in her own right, unjustly forgotten, neglected and obscure). Ms. Moore typically declined her half of the byline. The first of the three stories was also published (1954) as "Beyond Earth's Gates" as "By Lewis Padgett and C. L. Moore". Since it can be argued that Lewis Padgett was C. L. Moore, perhaps here is an admission of collaboration. Or something. The Portal In The Picture deals with a man from late forties New York mysteriously transported through a strange painting which functions as a gateway between worlds. He finds himself on an Earth where alchemy reigns and science is a forgotten legend. He must save the most beautiful woman on two worlds to escape the treacherous pleasures of this strange world. Valley of the Flame deals with Amazonian explorers who discover a place where time flows at a faster rate. Here a strange race of people guards a stranger secret with the opwer to destroy the planet. The Dark World is sort of a celtic-paganized vision of the tale of Little Red Riding Hood, except the wolf is a werewolf, Red Hood is a witch, Granny is an ancient and malevolent alien entity or something, and the goodies are magic. Great stuff.

A Great Book!.......2007-07-26
I got this book about a month ago and it has been a big help for training at home. Its packed with a lot of information and is written really well...
I really like that it has sample workouts in the back that give you an idea of what you should do for each area you are trying to work on and how much to do...
I'd recommend this book to every martial artist
improve specific martial arts skills through designing and following your own personalized home workout .......2007-01-13
Ultimate Fitness Through Martial Arts author Sang Kim delivers. First by identifing and devoting an entire chapter to each of the main attributes (power; speed; perception; coordination; balance; agility; flexibility; endurance; accuracy; timing and strength) required to perform the martial arts. Second, by breaking-down each attribute into more detailed subsets - for example, power is broken down to explosive power, static power and dynamic power. Third, is how and why our bodies respond (or won't!) when we try to do a technique with power or speed and the result is (or isn't) powerful or speedy!
Kim then presents an impressive number of exercises and variations in each chapter that help the reader improve that specific attribute and/or subset.
This book has been a helpful supplement to my karate class training and has enabled me to accelerate my progress in endurance and flexibility - the two attributes which I am specifically working to improve. This book is an excellent resource.
Kim is the expert.......2006-04-10
Part of my daily routine. I also own his newer book on flexibility. This author has laid out a good comprehensive plan for everyone at every level, not just us who practice martial arts. Although this book was written quite a few years ago, its basic theory is still good-to-go today and it remains fresh.
Full of Very Useful Techniques to Improve Your Training.......2004-07-21
This book has strategies and exercises geared toward improving power, speed, perception, balance, agility, coordination, timing, endurance, accuracy, flexibility and mental strength. Also included are sections on nutrition, injury prevention and sample workouts that mix a variety of exercises from the categories previously listed. This book outlines a very direct and organized approach to the fitness aspect of martial arts training without any fluff or stylistic interpretations. Read it and immediately you will have an arsenal of good exercises for your fitness routine, at home or in a class. Highly recommended.

I practice Taekwondo, but no matter your martial art, this book is so detailed and helpful. Some exercises would be great in the Dojang, but you can do nearly all of them on you own. I believe even if you arent even a martial artist this book will whip you into excellent shape and you will have fun along the way.

Useful reference plus very interesting information.......2004-05-30
The book contains very interesting folklores related to Asian teas and introduced some of the author's favorites. Kam gives a brief introduction to few of the finest teas in the world, and much on the popular teas. Then an interesting tea ceremony. Although at some points I don't agree with the author, I do recommend this book to whoever interested in teas. A pleasure to read.
Very informative, interesting,.......2003-12-13
The Way Of Tea is the flip side to a book like "The New Tea Book" -- it goes in depth on a number of subjects and has information tea connoisseurs may not have known. For those who are mainly familiar with information about tea presented from an Indian standpoint, this enhance your knowledge, as it's more about the teas of China.
One of the first things this book covers in great detail is the history and production of tea. Its history starts in 2700 BC and goes up through modern day -- but don't be afraid, it's not like reading a textbook. It's still light and quick read with a lot of great information.
Then there's a good section on the making of teas and varieties of teas. I learned a lot about the preparation of types of teas -- that is, how they're made before they get to you. There's also a lengthy discussion on the proper preparation of teas, and how to serve them. This includes a discussion and series of photos on the gongfu method of tea preparation and serving.
Additionally, there's a series of homeopathic style recipies for tea as various cures. While some of these may be effective due to the placebo effect, I have tried some of these preparations for my girlfriend when she's sick and she said she felt a little better soon afterwards (without me explaining what I was doing). While it's not to be taken as evidence of effectiveness, it may work a bit. Be aware that if you can't get to a place that specializes in Asian foods, though, you may not be able to do many of the recipes.
In any case, this is a great book and almost anyone can learn from it.

Reader from the Colorado Mountains.......2003-10-24
What complete focus on the kitchen where no other feng shui books have gone. The authors share their own unique insights accumulated from the vast wisdom of their teachers for the past 30 years, experience in owning their own restaurant in London (among all places) called the Immortals and being masters of Chinese marital arts where natural energies and wisdom pearl out of our bodies in the gentlest form.
In a clear, step by step, slow pace each aspect of food and the kitchen is harmoniously discussed. From food cultivation to transportation to preparation to cooking and finally consumption on the table; kitchen landscape and design including placement of electric appliances, storage of foods, selection of flooring, counters and cabinets; eating with nature of the four seasons, and brilliant explation of balancing of five elements of fire, earth, water, air and wood. Also includes easy to follow healthful and easy to obtain recipes.
When the USDA is questioning the food pyramid that has collapsed before us Americans, may they be inspired to look at the root cause of our imbalances which lie heavily in the food we consume.
A reader from New York.......2000-03-24
I found the book fun and interesting. I saw it in a friends kitchen picked it up and found it very informative. In a world of so many toxins, genetically engineered food we need more books like this. I have since bought the book myself, it has opened a new way of looking at food for me and made me do more research into what I eat!

Book Description
This award-winning cookbook by Elisabeth Lambert Ortiz includes 500 recipes from the exotic culinary traditions of the Latin American World, covering the coasts, mountainous areas, and fertile plains between Mexico and Chile. Ortiz selects appetizers, soups, main courses, salads, and desserts from each region and explores the wild array of spices and styles that make these recipes unique.
Using delicious examples, she describes how the Spanish, Portuguese, African, and Middle Eastern influences have combined with the indiginous cooking of the Maya, Aztec, and Inca civilizations. Her recipes range from familiar favorites such as Guacamole and Feijao Preto (black beans), to more unusual recipes: Sopa de Topinambur (Jerusalem Artichoke Soup -- Chile), Matambre (Stuffed Rolled Flank Steak -- Argentina), Pichones con Salsa de Camarones (Squab in Shrimp Sauce -- Peru), Salada de Palmito (Hearts of Palm Salad -- Brazil), Quimbolitos (Steamed Puddings -- Equador), as well as a wide variety of sauces and breads.
This book is the prototype for all books on Latin American cooking and remains the definitive text on the subject.

Delicious, exciting recipes with plenty of background.......2007-01-08
Since my father was Colombian and my mother born in America, I enjoyed delicious Colombian cuisine when we visited his family--arepas, sancocho, empanadas, etc--but never learned how to cook this type of food at home. Luckily for me, Elisabeth Ortiz has compiled this wonderful book!
She begins the book with a comprehensive list of common ingredients of South American cuisine, including a description of the ingredient and where one might find it. She then continues the book with the usual categories of Meats, Vegetables, Sauces, etc. She includes background and information about the food for each of her recipes. For example, she might describe when and where the meal might be served, or some helpful tips about a particular ingredient.
I have made several recipes from this book, and they've all turned out beautifully. The instructions are detailed and easy to follow, even for someone who, like me, has little experience in the particular cuisine. More importantly, though, everything is delicious!
I especially like to use the recipes in this book for special occasions. For example, my favorite dish, Pabellon Caraqueno (Steak with rice, black beans, a plantains--the national dish of Venezuela), while simple, takes several hours to prepare. However, I guarantee that, after you've arranged this meal on a platter and set it down in front of your guests, you will be rewarded with some 'Ooohs' and 'Aahhs' and many satisfied taste buds.
A must for lovers of Latin American cooking.......2006-09-21
This meticulously researched volume offers a mouthwatering and practical introduction to the region's cookery. It is packed with authentic and trustworthy recipes as well as a generous amount of essential information and would be an excellent addition to any cookbook collection.
Also recommended: "The Complete Book of Mexican Cooking," by the same author.
Great variety of South American Recipes.......2004-07-11
I spent my childhood in Colombia and greatly miss some of the "Criollo" cooking of the region. This is one of the few Latin American cookbooks that includes many recipes from South America, along with the more common Central and North American (Mexican) recipes. She has an extensive introduction describing the cooking of different regions and a chapter on ingredients. There are many recipes in different categories, but I believe in a book this size it was impossible to do justice to the cooking of some of the countries represented. Think of it more as an introduction to the cuisine of those countries. I found that there were only two Bolivian recipes listed, and there were very few Argentinian, Paraguayan, Peruvian or Venezuelan recipes. The book does include the Argentinian dishes with which I am most familiar. I wish she would visit the region again and write another book! I have found this book useful in recreating some of the recipes from my Childhood. Some of the recipes I looked up seemed complex and had ingredients that I could not locate, but most of the recipes seem easy to prepare, and adapted to ingredients that can be found in the US. The Colombian recipes included are representative of the two regions that she states she visited, the Coastal Region, and the area surrounding the Capital, Santafe de Bogota (However, my Aunts would be mortified to hear of an "Ajiaco Bogotano" made without Guascas and with just any kind of potato instead of with "papas criollas"). There are not a lot of recipes from the Colombian interior and Mountain regions where I spent most of my childhood, or from the region bordering Venezuela. This is understandable in a cookbook that covers so many diverse cuisines. I will be purchasing some more specialized cookbooks on Colombian cooking. One that I like and I would recommend, is "Cocina Colombiana, Paso a Paso". It is currently out of print, but if Colombian Cooking interests you, you may be able to find a used copy. I am also looking for books on Argentinian and Peruvian Cooking. Any suggestions? Since I own this book in a paperback version that is just starting to fall apart, I will be purchasing it in hardback.
My most delapidated cookbook.......2001-12-25
_The Book of Latin American Cooking_ is one of my favorite cookbooks. It's full of unique ideas and combinations that you just can't find elsewhere. For example, I was surprised to see how much a pureed corn sauce tasted like it contained dairy.
I would never have thought of making a soup with pureed avocados! A lot of the recipes sound odd but are delicious. A few, admittedly, are just odd.
I was having a look here to see if there might be a hardback edition. My current copy needs to be replaced!
Great Cookbook to add to your library..........2001-08-10
Lots of wonderful authentic latin recipies. They have all been very intersting and delightful so far. Some of the dishes can be a little complicated to prepare though.
Book Description
Like The Mafia Cookbook, this is a cookbook with a story. It's about how Joe Dogs, whose testimony sent more high-ranking mafiosi to the slammer than that of any other federal witness, set out on a trip through small-town America, a million miles from Vegas, Miami Beach, Rao's Restaurant, Little Italy, and Tony Soprano country, trying to keep one step ahead of the Gambino crime family members who were determined to whack him and causing confusion, heartache (but never heartburn), and dismay to the federal marshals who were in charge of relocating him in the heartland and who didn't think Joe should be cooking up Italian food for all sorts of strangers or identifying himself with his beloved Yorkie or visiting New York City or enjoying himself with attractive women.
Joe Dogs, being who he is, did all these things and more and writes about them with wit, savage humor, and an unerring eye for detail and the good story, even when the joke is on him. Along the way, he teaches the reader how to cook such mob favorites as Veal Francese, Tuscan Bean Crostini, Broccoli Rabe, Chicken a la Andrea, Fettuccine Alfredo, Filet Mignon Oscar, Insalata con Genoa, Clams Oregano, Filet of Red Snapper Italian Style, Linguine with White Clam Sauce, Mushrooms Stuffed with Crabmeat, Pasta Primavera with Shrimp, plus a meat loaf to die for, and many non-Italian dishes and desserts, all of them based on food you can buy at any supermarket anywhere in the United States.
You don't know how to cook? Fuhgedaboutit! These recipes are foolproof.
What's more, they're quick -- you can cook up these meals in a hurry with one eye on the driveway just in case a black late-model SUV with tinted windows happens to turn up and you have to eat and run. If you want to eat like Tony Soprano at home, without fuss or shopping in specialty stores or taking a course in Italian cooking, Joe Dogs is your man. This is the book to have on hand, in which Joe Dogs Iannuzzi, former Gambino crime family mobster and author of The Mafia Cookbook, tells the vivid story of his life on the run and of the "can't fail" recipes for great Italian dishes whose ingredients can be bought in a small-town supermarket when you're a thousand miles from an Italian grocery store in Little Italy and couldn't go there anyway since there's a contract out for you. These are meals you can't refuse.

Cooking to Die For.......2007-07-05
I was not familiar with Joe Dogs and his other books, so like others, thought this was a fictional mobster in witness protection. Who Knew? The stories are funny and the recipes are quick and tasty. It's a cute hook on 30-minute meals gone Italiano -- so eat and run. Call me crazy but I liked it.
