Check Out the Person.......2007-06-28
Saw this guy hawking his hype on TV and decided to do a little background checking. While his general priciples are expoused by any financial "guru" the fact remains he's been bankrupt at least once following his own information. Real estate is risky business and not the bed of roses he makes it out to be. Just wait until your first stinker of a renter and when the state comes a calling because the person you rented a 1 bedroom apartment to has two kids and the law doesn't allow this (after the person told you they had no kids).
Wouldn't surprise me that most of his money comes from selling these books more than real estate.
A good read.......2007-05-22
Like other author's book, this one is also easy to follow, a good bedtime read. Unfortunately like other books it lacks more specific detail on the subject although it is present more here then in the other books.
The whole series is a good eye opener but author would do all of us a favor if he would make all of it into one book.
Good Motivator.......2007-02-26
Once again, the Rich Dad series has an inspiring and motivational book. No it doesn't give you all of the answers, but tells you how you need to think to be rich. Why do most lottery winners go broke? Because they don't know how to think and act rich and just blow their money. This book will definitley help you think rich and become rich if you beleive in yourself.
A bit old.......2007-02-16
This is Rich Dad Poor Dad reprinted with a few additions. The message of the book is correct: create assets that create passive income, avoid debt, get out of the rat race, don't count on job security etc.
One element is missing, though. The risk of building a business is also high, as well as failure rate. Kyosaki is a very successful businesman, but like many other successful people he fails to mention the role of chance in building a successful business. Yes, if you persevere, you may build a good business and become financially independent. But you also have a chance of being broke, bancrupt and have a heart attack. Dentists on the average financially do better than college dropouts, even though some of the dropouts may become very rich, like Bill Gates.
By all means, read this book and follow its principles. But read also Taleb's "Fooled by Randomness", a sobering balancer.
Order is Not Important - The Message Is!.......2006-12-04
Many know that I am (proudly) an advocate of the teachings of Kiyosaki. However, that does not mean he can get off without some constructive criticism every now and then as I see it.
First the positive: Retire Young - Retire Rich (RY-RR) is an solid (but not necessarily essential) component of the RDPD series of books/products. Within RY-RR one will review the key components of his prevous books and add to the base the important role of leverage and how it accelerates one's goal of becoming financially independent/wealthy. As I have stated in previous reviews, he begins his books after RDPD with a sound review of previous lessons and fundamentals and ends with new thoughts/introductions to new concepts. Within RY-RR leverage is applied/incorporated to the teachings of the first three books of his RDPD series and when combined - accelerates wealth-building. Specifically, he introduces an explanation (backed by sound references - primarily by government sources) of the passive-portfolio income levels. Second, he discusses in-depth that retiring young and rich is not about thinking differently, but thinking the opposite of how the poor and middle class think. Next, in Section III (until the end), he goes into the leverage of passive and portfolio income strategies that will accelerate one's goal of becoming financially independent while you're still young enough to enjoy it.
However, there are flaws. This book, if you read the first three books in the series (and maybe the fourth, which I don't consider in my reviews because of the target audience, which I am not a part of) will be slow - Sections I and II were forced reads. One may find the need to read hoping to catch every gem of wisdom and thought of a powerful force in the finance/investment world (Kiyoaski), but may find it slow. Having read the first few books in the series, the power and discussion of leverage may seem a bit late - either because you know about it and/or discovered it if you are an action-oriented reader. Also, I agree that the concept of leverage is important - it is a KEY ingredient to beooming financially successful and independent. This book would have been better placed within RDPD and CFQ with Section III being incorporated within Rich Dad's 'Guide to Investing.'
Now if you are only a casual reader of investing and finance then let me disclaim and insert a spoiler: Read pg. 104 and you have what you're looking for. But if you really want to continue in building your millionaire mindset influenced by Kiyosaki - read the entire book and have fun with Section III.
The good news as the reviewer of this book is that Kiyosaki stands firm and I believe in his concepts because they are many of the concepts I utilize in my investments. Furthermore, a financial paradigm shift is a on-going process. Sometimes redunancy is good - but again, in this particular book, it goes on too long. Allow me to give you some key points to focus on:
- Serving more and more people with less and less effort
- Adhearing to and following your plan even during times of disappointment
- Conepts of shorts, puts, and options - don't gloss over this: If you are a "doer" in this section, you may disagree with Kiyosaki points (some of which I do), but the concepts are well-explained in lay terms.
Bottomline: Is RY-RR essential reading in the Kioyaski series? The answer is "no," plain and simple. Is it worth the read? To use one of Kiyosaki's favorite phrases: "It depends." It depends on where you are financially, your knowledge base, and your understanding and application of his previous work. But just as important: It depends on your patience to get through the first two sections of the book and overcoming what I am confident will be a shared opinion: Your willingness to hear the same message again with the topic of leverage appearing two books too late.
Oh - least we all forget: Kiyosaki, as of the placement and order of this book within his series, does not give you a blueprint. So, if you're reading hoping that it's written with concrete steps of how to reach the affluent-super rich categories then don't buy - I will argue that you will be disappointed almost with every book written by him. But if you seeking fundamentals and looking to increase your knowledge level and expand on the mind-set format of which he writes for a practical $18.00 value - you may enjoy (all points considered in the review above).

Some investment books claim only one true path to stock-market riches. Fund manager James O'Shaughnessy has five, and he has the data to back them up. He was the first independent researcher to be granted full access to a Standard & Poor's database containing computerized information on almost 10,000 stocks going back to 1951. From the data, O'Shaughnessy derived five portfolio-building strategies that, over the past 45 years, have consistently beaten the market average. How to Retire Rich also contains a wealth of useful information on mutual funds, online trading, and using the Internet to research stocks.
Book Description
Now in paperback--the groundbreaking investment guide by bestselling author James O'Shaughnessy that shows you the simple way to create the fully funded retirement you deserve.
Even if you think you're in great financial shape and can afford two cars and several vacations a year, the numbers in your savings and retirement plan don't always add up to a wealthy--or financially secure--future. In
How to Retire Rich, investment wizard James O'Shaughnessy uses his revolutionary analysis of the Standard & Poor's CompuStat Database and stock market history to identify exactly which strategies have consistently beaten almost all active stock pickers over the past four decades--and to show regular folks like you how to apply these proven formulas to your 401(k) and your savings plan, and, over time, grow as little as $2,000 into more than $4 million.
By adopting O'Shaughnessy's logical, proven approach and by avoiding hunches, hot tips, and trendy advice from high-profile gurus, you, too, can master the basics of investing, dramatically increase your net worth, and fund the retirement of your dreams.

O'Shaughnessy's strategies work.......2007-05-18
I read the book in 2001 after listening to the audio book summary. I then modified his Leaders with Luster strategy and I am still using it today after further slight modifications. The results are outstanding! All his numbers on market capitalization, cashflow etc. are totally outdated by now, but the concept still works and he explains to get updated numbers build into your screening tool. The screen should return about 140 companies, sort them logically and hand pick from there. The same strategy got me into the top 2% of the CNBC portfolio challenge that closed on 5/11/07. Use your head when reading this book and modify the screens to your investment objective. Look at sectors when hand selecting your final stocks and question the number of stocks O'Shaughnessy suggests. This is a great book and his strategies (modified) are still working for me.
Great book-investment strategy really works........2006-06-17
This is my first Amazon book review, although I have been reading them for years. I read this book many years ago, and immediately started investing in what was then the O'Shaughnessy Cornerstone Growth Fund (now the Hennessy Cornerstone Growth Fund-HFCGX). This fund is based directly on the investment strategy outlined in this book, and the performance has been outstanding. Since I first started investing in this fund, my two daughers accounts have grown at just under 18% per annum, which I might state is the historical average for this investment strategy if it had been used from 1952 onward. If this per annum return continues, their $10,000 invested in 1999 will turn into over $1 million by the time they are in their mid-forties. I now have rolled over my 401K plan into this same fund based on the principals in this book, and my Roth IRA. I read tons of investment information prior to buying this book, and even invested in a few other funds, but nothing has touched the strategy of the investment information in this book. I highly recommend buying this book.
Read What Works on Wall Street instead.......2004-03-07
In this book Mr. O'Shaughnessy takes four different (fictional) characters and shows them how to use his investing methods to beat the market based on his exhaustive study on what really beats the market. Basically this book takes his knowledge from What Works on Wall Street and makes up stories for these couples.
Mr. O'Shaughnessy thinks we should buy 50 stocks and rebalance those 50 stocks at the beginning of each year. In fact I am surprised that I haven't seen FolioFN giving away his books to their members since his methodology seems to be meant for those of us who have folios.
One of the major things that I didn't like about this book was in his descriptions of how these couples could retire rich he basically cut and paste each one and changed the ending result, in my opinion he made this book very boring and is a waste of paper. The only part of this book I liked was pages 139 and 140 these pages have various "doom and gloom" headlines from 1951-1997 and show that the market always has recovered.
Since now the strategies in this book are out in the public they probably won't even work right, so I would advise the majority of investors to put their money in an S&P 500 index fund since you'd be beating 80% of fund manages without having to do any research.

How to Retire Rich - Reasonable Runaways.......2003-12-26
A truly amazing strategy. I recently concluded tracking a 25-stock Reasonable Runaways strategy and the results are eye-popping. The portfolio turned in a 77.81% return dating from November 8th, 2002 thru November 7th, 2003. I will be putting real money to work now that I was able to see it with my own eyes...
A Nobel Prize for O'Shaughnessy!.......2003-08-05
The main message of _How to Retire Rich_ is that if you want to retire rich, or retire at all for that matter (ever!), you must invest in the stock market. You just don't have a choice in the matter. Sit down and let James O'Shaughnessy take you through the math---you'll quickly see that that is just the financial reality. The good news, however, is that investing in the stock market, when done properly, is not what you think it is. It's not about outsmarting all the other investors out there. It's not about trying to get a 'ten-bagger' so you can buy a cool car and brag at parties. It's not even about shrewd business savvy and scanning financial reports. It's about picking an effective strategy and sticking with it year in, year out until the day you retire, never pulling your money out of the market.
But if that sounds hard, don't worry. One of HTRR's strongest points is the wealth of wisdom it provides on the mental aspects of investing over the long term. What do you do if your portfolio tanks? What do you do if it soars? This is a problem? You'd be surprised! O'Shaughnessy is probably the only author with a completely rounded, mature outlook on the emotional aspects of investing. Reading HTRR will give you the confidence you need to invest and stay in the market through good times and bad.
So how do you invest? O'Shaughnessy breaks it all down for you, telling you exactly what to do. We're not talking the usual vague, feelgood accepted wisdom here such as 'buy market leaders' or 'buy on weakness, sell on strength'. Throw all those books in the trash! HTRR will tell you how to quickly find the precise stocks you should buy. You'll finish the book at 2 o'clock and have a list of the stocks to buy in your hand at 2:30. Yes, it's just that easy. You'll also know exactly when to buy them (now) and when to sell them (a year from now), and what do after that (repeat the process until you retire). What could be simpler?
O'Shaughnessy should be nominated for a Nobel Prize. He is a modern-day Charles Darwin with a theory that has all the hallmarks of a revolution in scientific thought. The theory is simple, but deceptively so. Many readers come away thinking they have understood it, only to later demonstrate that they clearly haven't. Even Motley Fool was apparently unable to grasp Reasonable Runaways (one of the strategies in HTRR). They tried to test it with a universe of stocks picked from Value Line (!). When it wasn't performing well after six months (!), they wondered how they could tweak it (!) to "make it dance" (their words). You'll understand just how ridiculous all of this is when you read HTRR.
Perhaps the reason for this widespread misunderstanding is that while the theory itself is simple, its ramifications are not---and without understanding its ramifications, it is impossible to truly understand the theory. Like Darwin, O'Shaughnessy has taken 'God'---the human element---completely out of the picture. That's what readers find so hard to grasp. O'Shaughnessy has shown that not only is human intervention in portfolio management not necessary, it's downright harmful. Given enough time, any human intervention will only lower a portfolio's returns from the optimum returns that could be obtained using a simple model.
I hesitate to include the returns I have earned over the past four years using the Reasonable Runaways strategy in this review, because I don't think they're typical. I have earned 93.15% (CARR of 17.88%) versus 1.17% (CARR of 0.29%) for the S&P during the same period (July 15, 2001 to July 15, 2005). And this is during a time period that includes 9/11. But as you'll discover from reading HTRR, four years is a meaninglessly short amount of time over which to gauge performance. Also, giving out exciting returns numbers shifts the discussion away from the real message of the book---get in the stock market and stay there (investing properly of course). It's the only way you'll ever be able to retire, rich or otherwise.

A Good Read!.......2001-03-21
Joseph S. Coyle offers basic advice for people pondering retirement. The book outlines straightforward strategies for saving and investing, and urges investors to start early and to put as much as they can into 401(k) plans and IRAs. So much for the obvious. Coyle also offers specific and useful guidelines for buying mutual funds and allocating assets. He realistically presents issues you may face in retirement, such as the emotional difficulties involved in leaving a career and having enough money to support your lifestyle (so buy a bond instead of that snazzy watch). Some of the book's basic advice will seem redundant to sophisticated investors, but the more detailed information will intrigue even them. We at getAbstract recommend this book for anyone looking for guidance about saving and investing for retirement. [getAbstract note: The investment advice here - tax laws, stock markets, and what not - is extremely U.S.-oriented, although the lifestyle information is broadly applicable.]
Not too bad..........2000-03-31
Don't be fooled by the title, the author spends a lot of the book explaining the realities of retirement. That is, we're living longer in retirement and not saving enough to meet the challenge that presents. Early retirement will take a determined effort and persistent savings to achieve. Just think about it, if you retire at 55 and expect to live to 90 you are talking about 35 years of living off your investments! The book is well written and even gives some good ideas of what towns you might want to consider for retirement living. Retirement, let alone early retirement presents a challenge for everyone, this book is a good place to begin thinking about the subject.

A TOUCHING PERSONAL INSIGHT INTO LIFE DURING THE WAR........1999-09-26
THE MORE I READ OF THIS BOOK, THE HARDER IT BECAME TO PUT IT DOWN. I FELT A PART OF THE WRITER'S EXPERIENCES, FRUSTRATIONS AND LONGINGS. READING A BOOK LIKE THIS PUTS ME INTO THE LIVES BEING DESCRIBED AND EXPOSES ME TO THE HEARTBREAK THEREIN. VERY TOUCHING AND ONE THAT I WILL READ AGAIN. MY HEART GOES OUT TO THE SUFFERINGS OF MARION AND AMANDA AND THEIR FAMILIES.
History from the mouth of a common soldier.......1999-01-03
This simple farmer who went to war wrote letters home to his wife and child describing what his daily routines were in the army, including the homesickness and heartaches. The daily truths he describes make it hard to idealize and glorify any war.
Great insight into hardships of war from a soldier's view........1999-01-02
If you want to know what it was like to be a soldier in the Civil War, read this book. It gives incredible insight into the day to day hardships that a soldier faced. It is an emotional journey that presents the pride of fighting for a cause and the heartaches of leaving ones family.
Letters to Amanda..........1998-12-24
My great-grandfather fought along-side Marion Hill Fitzpatrick as a member of the 49th Georgia, a sister regiment of Thomas' Brigade. This book gave me a very personal, heart-wrenching insight into not only what these men went through, but also the daily ordeals of surviving of their families back home. My thanks to the the folks who produced this wonderful work.

Excellent look at a soldier's life during the Civil War........1998-12-18
This book captures the feel of a soldier's life during the Civil War. The hardships and the heartaches of the war are made all too clear through the letters of this simple Georgia farmer to his beloved wife Amanda. A must read for any Civil War buff and an excellent slice of real history for anyone.

Book Description
The remarkable breadth of Erasmus' contacts throughout his life is reflected in this unique, informative three-volume biographical dictionary. Together, these fully illustrated volumes will contain information about more than 1900 people mentioned in his correspondence and other writings.
Differing substantially from the national biographical dictionaries which restrict themselves to major figures, these volumes combine the famous with the obscure: the Dutch pope, Adrian VI, appears next to Adrianus, a messenger who carried letters between Erasmus in Paris and Jacob Batt, a tutor in Toumehem. A random sampling includes the infamous Pope Alexander VI; Catherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn; Andrea Alciati, the interpreter of Roman law, whose chief fame rests on the creation of the Renaissance emblem book; Luther's wife, Katharine von Bora; Albrecht Durer, portraitist of Erasmus; Emperor Charles V; and Etienne Dolet, accused of blasphemy and sedition, who was tortured and hanged and his books burned publicly.
Biographies of loyal friends of Erasmus, like Pieter Gillis, clerk of the city of Antwerp, are interspersed with those of his critics and enemies, such as Guillaume Farel, whom Erasmus characterized as insane and a seditious liar. The famous and infamous - Henry VIII, Machiavelli, Francis I, Pope Julius II, Isabella of Castille, and many more - appear next to the not so familiar, but no less intriguing. Cassandra Fedele, implicated in a scandal involving counterfeit money, who survived shipwreck in the Mediterranean and ended life as the superintendent of a hospital in Venice.
The cast of characters is a Who's Who of the period: painters like Holbein and Metsys; the printer Aldo Manuzio; Bishop John Fisher, martyred for opposition to Henry VIII's divorce; Martin Luther and his parents; the knight Ulrich von Hutten; and dynastic families such as the wealth Fuggers of Bavaria and the Medicis, including Lorenzo the Magnificent (patron of Botticelli and Leonardo da Vinci), the petulant Alessandro, the extravagant Cardinal Ippolito, and Lorenzo II, Duke of Urbino (to whom Machiavelli dedicated The Print.
A fascinating array of characters brings this turbulent period of history vividly to life. Contemporaries of Erasmus will not only intrigue the general reader; it will be indispensable for those who have searched in vain for a biographical dictionary covering this period.
