A good guide to start.......2003-01-08
While Crampton's book is a good place to start your search for small town living, it is important to realize that each small town offers a unique personality. Some generalizations simply do not apply to Silver City. For example, it is not necessary to join a church (or country club) in order to fit in here. Even a small community like ours has diverse sub-populations: recent retirees, most of whom have some affinity for the arts; old-timers, most of whom are the conservative church-goers Crampton describes; and Hispanic families, many of whom have worked in the mines.
These groups rarely interact, although we usually get along very peacefully. We also have a number of folks who teach at the university -- and we rarely see them around town.
To learn about Silver city, you won't get much information from the Chamber of Commerce or the editor of the newspaper. You'd do better to spend some time hanging out at the AIR cafe, talking to whoever comes in. The morning and afternoon groups are quite different and everyone is friendly.
The author gives some nuts and bolts about each small town. Unfortunately, with the exception of weather, much of this information will change by the time the book is printed. And your decision may well be made by factors that can't be added up.
The best part of the book is the section on economics of small town living. Here, he's right on. You have to budget for travel to a large city now and then. Air travel will be more costly and you need time to drive to a large airport. His view of housing prices seems optimistic. If you move to a desirable city (such as Silver City) expect to pay more for a house than he allows.
And if you move to retire, your economic picture will be quite different. Many newcomers to Silver City are beginning a second career as an artist or writer. Moving without a job is scary -- and I do not recommend it unless you fit the profile I describe in my own book, Making the Big Move.

Looking to live somewhere where houses are cheap? Head to Waterloo-Cedar Falls, Iowa, where the average home costs $75,700, and annual property taxes for that home are about $960. Perhaps a good job market is a higher priority. In that case, pick Phoenix, Arizona; Las Vegas, Nevada; or Riverside, California, as they top the list of places projected to have the highest-percentage increase in new jobs by 2005. Most of those jobs, by the way, are expected to have above-average pay. This and other detailed information can be found in the sixth edition of Places Rated Almanac, a helpful resource for people thinking of relocating as well as those with a desire to learn about cities and towns. Metropolitan areas are rated in nine categories: costs of living, job outlook, transportation, education, health care, crime, the arts, recreation, and climate. But don't go looking for statistics on Podunk--the focus remains on 354 metro areas, metro defined as a city or urbanized population of at least 50,000, located in a county with a total population of at least 100,000.Places Rated is laced with intelligent and, unexpectedly, witty writing. The whole concept of judging places, the author notes, may seem the utmost of brass. "Yet everyone does it, privately. Some suspect that culture in Omaha or Des Moines or Saskatoon is a contradiction. Others surmise that daily life in Miami consists of surviving drug-trade shoot-outs..." Organized intelligently, Places Rated acknowledges that "livability" and "quality of life" are moving targets. Livable for whom? The artist who wants mountain vistas? The entrepreneur who wants low taxes and no red tape? With these limitations in mind, the book ends with a chapter titled "Putting It All Together," where the reader is invited to rate cities with a customized list of priorities. Arriving at your customized list, however, requires answering 72 questions that force you to decide once and for all what you value most--a low cost of living or good school districts or mild winters or some other criterion. And should you find that climate matters most, head for Santa Barbara, California, where winters and summers are mild and natural hazards are few, and stay away from Rochester, Minnesota, unless you're willing to endure 35 days when it's 0 degrees Fahrenheit, and 165 days of 32 degrees Fahrenheit, annually. --John Russell

not too impressed.......2005-07-14
Major letdown, very dissappointing!.......2003-04-15
When I saw this book for sale I immediately ordered it and had it shipped express...I couldn't wait to read it! I was so excited by what great examples and tutorials would be inside waiting for me to eat up! Now that I've read it I don't even remember 1 thing to walk away with.
To be fair, this book offers some helpful tips for running a general business like budgeting, insurance, different types of corporations, getting an accountant and some very basic design suggestions, but that's about it.
Theres nothing in this book to sink your teeth into and absolutely no secrets are given away, it's just very basic information: you should have atleast 32MB of ram in your computer, update your paysite often, say please and thank you when communicating with customers.
I'm particularly bothered by the fact that the author(s) said they would present stories of people in the business, but there are only 2 short quick stories in the beginning that are barely a paragraph long about a soccer mom and a guy who worked as an adult movie assistant then started making his own and now he's successful.
Whoo-PEE!
How about some more stories of real people who made it? How about breaking down their stories and showing some samples that your readers could use?
How about more on tgps. Should I start one? Would you suggest I use a traffic trading script and skim, or keep it clean and go for the bookmarkers? Should I go for niche or general theme on my tgp? What kinds of income do people generate with making galleries and running 1 or more tgps? How long can I expect it to take for my tgp to start generating income?
How about some information to getting serious traffic to my site besides recip linking and putting meta tags on my pages? Chapter 14 was a joke. I can't believe it's so scarce on information.
How did "Eric P" become so successful selling his movies?
How much did he have to start with? Where did he find models? How did he promote his site? How did he get that traffic to his site and sell 1000 copies a week? Through Meta tags (laff)?
How about getting into the nitty gritty like your title suggests?
Dont tell me that some people have become rich from thinking of ideas that are outside the box, show me some examples! So frustrating!!!!
This book is all over the place and doesn't give any concrete examples of people who have done it and how they did it. Almost everything given in this can be found in tutorials all over the web.
What a waste of time.
