    Book Description

Back after a four–year hiatus, New York Times bestselling author Scott Adams presents an outrageous look at work, home and everyday life in his new book, Dilbert and the Way of the Weasel.

Building on Dilbert's theory that 'All people are idiots', Adams now says, 'All people are idiots. And they are also weasels.' Just ask anyone who worked at Enron.

In this book, Adams takes a look into the Weasel Zone, the giant grey area between good moral behaviour and outright felonious activities. In the Weasel Zone, where most people reside, everything is misleading, but not exactly a lie. Building on his popular comic strip, Adams looks into work, home and everyday life and exposes the way of the weasel for everyone to see. With appearances from all the regular comic strip characters, Adams and Dilbert are at the top of their game – master satirists who expose the truth while making us laugh our heads off.

2 out of 5 stars Nothing new to say?.......2006-12-28

After doing a pretty good to great job in The Dilbert Principle and The Dilbert Future and an ok job in Joy of Work Adams stumbles here with Way of the Weasel.

The strips are as funny as ever, but you'll have seen them before in the strip compilations and the daily paper. The trouble is that where he had actual insight, philosphy and something to say in his previous books he doesn't here. We either have the same old saws about management cleverly called "Management Weasels" as if it were new insights or what comes down to prose versions of the strips. The actual strips themselves are better than the prose versions.

The book does have its moments. But the start is fairly bad and you'll spend a lot of time thinking "Why am I reading this."

However if you have missed his previous Dilbert prose offerings you probably will enjoy this. If you have read Principle, Future and Joy of Work then you can safely give this a pass. You've seen it before!

3 out of 5 stars A book by weasels for weasels.......2006-11-22

If I was as big a weasel as Mr. Adams assumes I am (by his own admission!), I wouldn't have bothered reading his book before writing this review. Apparently, I have a thing or two more to learn about being a weasel. The first part of this book is so over the top that it seems forced, and doesn't exactly tickle the funny bone. However, as Mr. Adams moves out of the office and begins to discuss weasels in other areas of life, it improves, and there are both good laughs and some scarily accurate descriptions of weasel behavior. As ususal, the comic strips are generally the funniest bits, proving yet again that Mr. Adams talents are best packaged in that format.

5 out of 5 stars Required Reading .......2006-11-04

Scott Adams's Way of the Weasel should be required reading for all office drones/cubicle slugs etc as a survival guide in the business world.
Adams's dead-on interpretation of living in the corporate swamp is his usual fine effort in humor and sarcasm. It will be tough to take notes since the reader will be laughing all the time.

5 out of 5 stars Dilbert & the way of the weasel.......2005-09-19

Prompt delivery, and in great condition. Extremely funny CD's; anyone who has worked for a large company will be laughing out loud.

5 out of 5 stars Laughed So Hard I Cried: IT'S ALL TRUE!!!!.......2005-01-02

I couldn't even get past the first 2 or 3 pages without sobbing in utter hilarity, not only because the writing and wit are exceptional, but the insight is DEAD ON. I've worked for a major financial services technologies division for 14+ years, and in data processing for nearly 30, and Mr. Adams' skewering of what goes on in any company is so on the mark it's uncanny - I SWEAR he has a webcam in my office building and is rehashing what goes on on a daily basis. The flip side of this is that he IS dead on, and it's a sad, sad commentary on the state of the business world as we know it in 2005. I began my career as an eager to learn & produce programmer, and progressed to frustration, disbelief, cynicism, apathy and, now, I guess in all honesty: weaselhood. Wish it weren't the case, but the odds are so stacked against being a responsible, committed, caring professional in this psychotically mismanaged world of ridiculous rules and obstacles - to say nothing of increased outsourcing (decisions made by executives who never have to worry about THEIR jobs being sent overseas...). It is to a point where you can't survive to retirement without weaseling. And what ==is== the point of holding on to shredded values of yesteryear that would result in a precarious suite of 'golden years' when nothing and no one around you cares or supports your sense of integrity and honor? Sad, but true.

    Book Description

A Business of Ferrets, a fantasy done in the style of the Thieves' World series. For those who remember and love the magic, intrigue, and honor among friends of that series: In the decadent Empire of Bharaghlaf, the Scholar King Khethyran sits uneasily on the throne while in the Slums of his capital city an apprentice thief, Ferret, and her four young friends eke out a hand-to-mouth existence. When the beggar Owl disappears, Ferret and the others set out to learn his fate. Sold as a slave to the powerful House Ghytteve, Owl is destined to be the bait at the center of a complicated grab for power. But Owl, whose gifts as a Seer are just beginning to emerge, is far more than the helpless pawn he seems. As Ferret and her friends come closer to the truth, they too are inexorably drawn into the vicious intrigues of the Council Houses. From the enigmatic longshoreman, Sharkbait, to the Emperor's foreign witch, the friends enlist a formidable and varied band of allies-and set out to beat the scheming nobles at their own, ruthless game.

    5 out of 5 stars A Business of Ferrets.......2004-02-23

Ferret, Owl, Mouse, Kitten, Donkey, and Squirrel. They are all friends, and they all live on the streets - with the exception of Mouse, who owns a flower shop with her parents, and Donkey, who works in his uncle's tavern. Owl and Kitten are beggars, Squirrel a messenger boy, and Ferret is a thief. None have great lives, but they have routine and each other.
Until Owl is sold as a slave to a noble house, and their lives change in many ways.
I'm sorry this isn't a very good review, but I haven't read this book for a while. I've read it three times, though, and will read it again in time. It's a great book, and I recommend it to just about anyone.

5 out of 5 stars A Ruthless Game of Theif Against Noble.......2003-01-19

A plucky young apprentice thief, a slave boy with eyes full of visions, a young street artist named Mouse-how can this motley group of slum-children hope to win against the scheming and politics of the nobility and save the Scholar King? With the help of some rather unusual allies, some divine intervention, and a whole lot of luck and courage!

Ms. Hilgartner deftly weaves the lives of her vivid and delightful cast into a tale of high adventure. When a plot to kill the scholar king is uncovered by a plucky young thief named Ferret, she and her young friends soon find themselves unwittingly embroiled in a dangerous world of court politics, with enemies and suspicion at every turn. Each character has their part to play; their move to make in the intricate game that means their very survival. The author maintains a brisk pace, keeping the action moving and all of her characters vivid in the reader's minds. This is a pleasant, if not completely original, romp through an adventure fantasy and perfect for YA readers who enjoy a good story. Those looking for something breathtakingly new may find the plot and story elements all too familiar. Street thieves, beggar children and kings in danger are all fairly traditional elements, but they in no way make for a dull story, as Ms. Hilgartner does an exceptional job whisking us up into her world and her characters' adventure.

Perhaps my main complaint with the book was that the central villain of the book was a little overdone, so that the result was more of a caricature than I think the author was aiming for. The villainy and cruelty is so over the top in a story where most of the characters have more complex motivations that I wished for a little more subtlety. The author's technique of maintaining a large cast of characters and jumping from character to character has its drawbacks in that the story never gives readers enough time or text to touch on the inner lives and emotions of cast. The reader is ever kept at one remove, and the emotional impact of the events is not as powerful as it otherwise could be. One last concern was the dizzying number of names to keep track of; most of them containing the letters y, z, or h in some combination and making it hard to remember who was who at times.

Ms. Hilgartner's writing has only improved with time, and this book is one of her best to date. She is a fine storyteller with a real sense of pacing and energy as well as a skill of weaving her plot threads together into a satisfying whole. While epic fantasy fans may find A BUSINESS OF FERRETS a bit lightweight, it is an excellent, engaging tale and will likely appeal to those readers who enjoy Tamora Pierce and Mercedes Lackey. Don't miss the next book in this series; A PARLIAMENT OF OWLS.

    Happy Reading! ^_^ shanshad

3 out of 5 stars A pleasant but unexceptional fantasy.......2002-12-09

Empire of Bharaghlaf has been blessed with a thoughtful and kind Emperor. Alas, he is almost powerless, and the ruthles noble houses scheme and murder with little restraint. Meanwhile, the slums remain poor and deadly for their inhabitants.

The book describes a group of children from the slums, when they become embroiled in noble schemes. It's written mostly for young adults; there are some intense scenes in the book, though.

The most prominent character, Ferret, is interesting, but the viewpoints shifts constantly between different characters, leaving little room for engagement. Most of the action is streamlined, almost oversimplified; and the magic is fairly superficial.

On the whole, a pleasant fantasy, but not gripping, original or intricate enought to stand out.
    ...

5 out of 5 stars The ultimate culmination of three great books.......2001-01-12

With "A Business of Ferrets" Beth Hilgartner has created a tale (or the beginning of an epic if she continues the series) that is a riveting cat and mouse chase of good vs. evil and weak vs. strong. An Empire in turmoil, a Emperor good and honorable in a time of need, and a world devoid of honor. It will take the lowest members of society to sacrifice all and stand against the power hungry and selfish. Good shall reign once more, the strong shall fall by the weak, and Children shall lead them.

"A Business of Ferrets" is the ultimate culmination of Mrs. Hilgartner's previous books. The deep friendship and character development from "A Murder for Her Majesty" is present and magnified. The chess like maneuvering of corrupt political/religious leaders from books like "Colors in a Dreamweavers Loom" & "A Murder for Her Majesty" is organized into an addictive and unpredictable plot here in "A Business of Ferrets". Finally the rich psychological questioning of self-being, purpose & relationships that was found in "Feast of The Trickster" is more relevant and better used in the latest book. "A Business of Ferrets" is a high watermark for Mrs. Hilgartner and a must read for anyone who loves a great character driven story. My only complaint is to Meisha Merlin & the lack of a hardback copy!

    5 out of 5 stars A page turner.......2001-01-03

I read this book in one sitting, mesmerized by the great story and the great characters. The plotting was superb; there were enough twists and turns to keep me surprised, but at the same time everything seemed thoroughly believable. I loved the multiple levels of the plot(s), just who is pulling the puppet strings and how much autonomy do the puppets have? The minor characters were as interesting as the major ones and the villains were engaging too. My only quibble was that it took me a while to get used to the names of the people at court - all those k's and h's and y's!

4 out of 5 stars Some Good Material.......2004-03-28

There are some witty observations in this collection. Most of it is pretty basic, which is what most comedy is all about. Here are a couple of examples:

                    Q. What is the difference between a chess player and a civil servant?
                    A. A chess player moves every now and then (p. 25).

Employer: We want a responsible man for this job.

Applicant: Well, I guess I'm your man. In all the other jobs I have worked at, whenever anything went wrong, they told me I was responsible (p. 138).
