Human Development Report 2005: International cooperation at a crossroads. Aid, trade and security in an unequal world (Human Development Report) (Human Development Report)

ASIN: 0195305116 |
Product Description
The Human Development Report 2005 examines the scale of the challenge facing the world at the start of the ten year countdown to the 2015 Millennium Development Goals mark. The Report focuses on three pillars of cooperation, each of which is in urgent need of renovation. The first pillar is international aid; the MDG project has been compromised by chronic and sustained under-financing, allied to problems in aid quality. The second pillar is international trade; under the right conditions, trade can act as a powerful catalyst for human development. The 'development round of World Trade Organization talks, launched in 2001, provided northern governments with an opportunity to create those conditions. The third pillar is that of security; violent conflict is a source of systematic human rights violation and a barrier to progress towards the MDGs that must be overcome.

Manufacturer: World Bank Publications ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0821363549 |
Product Description
The book presents estimates of total wealth for nearly 120 countries, using economic theory to decompose the wealth of a nation into its component pieces: produced capital, natural resources and human resources. The wealth estimates provide a unique opportunity to look at economic management from a broader and comprehensive perspective. The books basic tenet is that economic development can be conceived as a process of portfolio management, so that sustainability becomes an integral part of economic policy making. The rigorous analysis, presented in accessible format, tackles issues such as growth, development and equity. Where is the Wealth of Nations? is organized in four sections. The first part introduces the wealth estimates and highlights the main facts on the level and composition of wealth across countries. The second part analyzes changes in wealth and how they matter for economic policy. The third part deals with the level of wealth, its composition and links to growth and inequality. The last part reviews existing applications of resource and environmental accounting.Download Description

Toward High-quality Education in Peru: Standards, Accountability, and Capacity Building (World Bank Country Study) (World Bank Country Study)
World Bank Manufacturer: World Bank Publications ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0821370170 |
Product Description
Peru has made great strides in educational coverage. Although the gender balance is not perfect, it is at about the same level as that found in the rest of Latin America. However, Peru has an inequality problem which cannot be explained solely in economic terms. Other factors, such as linguistic or cultural discrimination or a lack of attention to pedagogical development for the poor, seem to be at work. This situation is a consequence of the lack of quality standards in education, no accountability and monitoring of the level of performance, and not enough teachers' training. This book has three main recommendations. First, it is necessary to generate basic standards, quality goals, and quality measurement systems. Second, once quality can be measured, a clear system of accountability should be implemented based on these standards and quality goals. The clients will play a central role in these systems by demanding their rights to quality services; this will only become possible once there are standards and goals that clarify clients' rights. Third, once there are standards and systems of accountability, investment is needed to strengthen the institutional capacity of the providers.
