Golden Rules of Economic Growth
ASIN: 0333732782 |
Book Description
A crucial issue in the era of globalization and internationalization, is whether the relationship between investment and finance is beneficial to growth and development. Similar questions have been raised about education and its rate of social return; is education necessary for improving the skill of the workforce, or does it serve primarily to facilitate the adoption of these new technologies? This book brings together a case of leading international scholars to analyze the importance of education, research, and human capital and the impact of financial systems on growth and development.
Product Description
History: Fiction or Science? is the most explosive tractate on history ever written - however, every theory it contains, no matter how unorthodox, is backed by solid scientific data. The book is well-illustrated, contains over 446 graphs and illustrations, copies of ancient manuscripts, and countless facts attesting to the falsity of the chronology used nowadays, which never cease to amaze the reader. Eminent mathematician proves that: Jesus Christ was born in 1153 and crucified in 1186 The Old Testament refers to mediaeval events. Apocalypse was written after 1486. Does this sound uncanny? This version of events is substantiated by hard facts and logic - validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources - to a greater extent than everything you may have read and heard about history before. The dominating historical discourse in its current state was essentially crafted in the XVI century from a rather contradictory jumble of sources such as innumerable copies of ancient Latin and Greek manuscripts whose originals had vanished in the Dark Ages and the allegedly irrefutable proof offered by late mediaeval astronomers, resting upon the power of ecclesial authorities. Nearly all of its components are blatantly untrue! For some of us, it shall possibly be quite disturbing to see the magnificent edifice of classical history to turn into an ominous simulacrum brooding over the snake pit of mediaeval politics. Twice so, in fact: the first seeing the legendary millenarian dust on the ancient marble turn into a mere layer of dirt - one that meticulous unprejudiced research can eventually remove. The second, and greater, attack of unease comes with the awareness of just how many areas of human knowledge still trust the three elephants of the consensual chronology to support them. Nothing can remedy that except for an individual chronological revolution happening in the minds of a large enough number of people.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Fenomenal.......2005-09-30
The complete kit offered by Dr. Anosike O Benji is complete, including in cases of deportation. He explains it step by step without just telling you the basic. This kit is designed to help your from the beginning to the most complex case you could think of. Luckily, he accurately explains it and define some terms which makes it understandable. I love it and I hope he writes a new edition to keep the readers in the latest in imigration law
Good intentions but flawed in so many silly ways:.......2004-08-10
I picked up this book from the library to learn more about the steps necessary for me to marry my American girlfriend. I had already read quite extensively both on the "About.com" pages but also on the official US immigration site.
The content of this book is, as far as I can tell, fairly accurate although I question one of the statements (see below). So why did I only give it 2 stars then?
My problem with this book can be divided into two parts, the authors fault and the publishers\editors fault:
The publisher\editor
The book is hardly more than an unfinished draft. On several pages, printed words have been blocked out with a pencil and corrections made by hand. One paragraph heading used the word "ENTERY" where the second "E" had been crossed out with a pencil. In other places, commas have been added and whole sections painted over and typed on top. Sometimes the headings are misaligned compared to the rest of the document and at one place it was so bad that some letters of the heading had "fallen" off of the page and been written in by hand. The booklet is also riddled with misspelled words. I don't pretend to be super-qualified in English and I know of the difficulties faced when writing in a non-native language, but then again I haven't published my texts as a book yet. To me it seems that someone messed up and handed in one of the unfinished draft papers to press instead of the finished, edited and proof read draft.
As a footnote, the printing quality in my version of the book was of low quality, often it looked like the press was running out of toner and a good light and straining eyes would have to be employed.
The author:
As for the contents, it is detailed, quite well organized, and as far as I can tell, accurate. My biggest grief was caused by the extremely long sentences used throughout the book.
(example: "Whatever else may be said to be involved in obtaining an entry visa by which an alien can become lawfully admitted into (or to remain in) the United States, the process itself is, at its most basic level, primarily a clerical and ministerial operation, requiring no complex "legal" procedures or expertise or any specialized technical theories or knowledge of law, or one which calls for a lawyer or other such professional.")
In my opinion, after having read extensively in the book, the text leaves a lot to be wished in terms of "easy reading", but is quite covering non the less if you can force yourself to keep reading.
However, one advice I can not figure out. In chapter 7 "The K-1 Visa: A Special Entry Visa For Fiance(e)s Engaged To Marry A U.S. Citizen" it was written that: "In fact the K-1 Visa has no real value or purpose - other than, in other words, to serve as a preliminary step to getting a permanent resident visa." (The quote is accurate down to the bad sentence structure.) He also claims that money would be saved by just go ahead and marry and then file for a visa as an immediate relative instead of first getting the K-1 visa, marry and then apply for the immediate relative visa. At first this sounds reasonable, and the claim that you would save money sounds true, BUT consider this:
If the alien travels to America with the intent to marry, he has to lie to get in, or risk being turned away at the border (this is why the K-1 even exists), and in order to get the immediate relative visa based on marriage, you have to enter America legally. Clearly the alien can not go to America to marry then. So the American travels to the alien and marries there, adding expenses in the form of extra round trip tickets. Also, the newly wed could not return to America as a couple, rather the "better half" would have to stay in his country of origin pending the processing of the "immediate relative based on marriage visa". Maybe I just missed out on something, somewhere, but I honestly think that the 135$ K-1 Visa fee is worth it, since you can then travel to America, get married and stay. Also, in the chapter of marriage based Visa, he goes on in great length about the importance of honesty throughout the application process and the difficulties of proving that the marriage is real and not a bluff to get a green card.... So why not do it the proper way through the K-1 visa then??
To sum up: Do not buy this book (pick it up at your library instead), look for other books on Amazon or better yet, spend the hours on the official page and guides. It has good information, but is not worth the money and almost not the time it takes to read it either. The information contained can for the most part be picked up using the official web-page, although that isn't trivial a task either. Libraries are a fine thing, use them.
All the basics of obtaining a temporary type of visa.......2003-05-15
To Obtain Your U.S. Immigration Visa For A Temporary Stay: The Non-immigrant Visa Kit: Immigration Manual, Benji Anosike's focus on understanding lawful admission to the U.S. explains all the basics of obtaining a temporary type of visa, whether it be for a student, businessman, or worker. From explanations of how to qualify to immigrate to this country to tips on how to stay legally in the U.S. and understanding the deportation process, this covers all the legal basics, from forms and paperwork to the rights of aliens and natives alike.
Book Description
In her first book, which won the L. L. Winship/PEN New England Award, Jane Brox writes of going back to the farm where she grew up, to help her aging father and the troubled brother who works the land with him. She memorably captures the cadences of farm life and the people who sustain it, at a time when both are waning.
Customer Reviews:
a little book about a small farm written with unusual poetry and love.......2007-08-31
I am a city person, and the closest I have been to a small farm is buying apples in the autumn at a roadside stand. I have no idea how I chose to buy this book and Jane's two other ones, but I did buy it and fell in love with it. The poetry is deep; she tells the story of her aging father who in his eighties tries to keep his beloved farm going, her brother who has stayed to help but is angry and sometimes dysfunctional, her mother, and her own return after many years. These are wound around and blended with tales of seasons of growth -- of apples, berries, all sorts of corn and the customers who show up decade after decade to buy what they loved last year. It is truly a spiritual book, and gives this city girl a sense of the enduring earth and its gifts and the people who are closest to it.
Here and Nowhere Else.......2000-01-04
Here and Nowhere Else captures with its perfect language the timeless undulations of rural living. It is not so much like reading a book as it is like walking the land with someone who respects both the comfort and the pain it can give. A truthful recording of enormous loss and a lyric epitaph for a family farm.

The Soul of Vermont
ASIN: 1557883602
Release Date: 2001-07-10 |
Book Description
Some say Vermont is America's last bastion of the simple life. Stubbornly resisting the modern trend to prepackaged, processed food, the Green Mountain State upholds natural, do-it-yourself ways, from its sugarhouses and orchards to its dairy farms and cornfields. In a Vermont Kitchen is an indispensable treasury of recipes that celebrate the bounty, the beauty, and the quirky individualist spirit of this unique region.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent all-around, great recipes!.......2003-10-17
I keep coming back to this book, not only finding new recipes each time but repeating favorites and varying ingredients for even more interesting dishes. There are a lot of favorites in here but the drunken apple chicken and the maple chicken are both excellent - hearty northeasterner meals. I highly recommend.
I have to disagree with everyone else..........2002-09-28
This is by far the worst cookbook in my collection. I consider myself to be a decent cook, producing beautiful and delicious results from recipes in all of the other books in a rather large collection.
Every single item (save one) tested from "In a Vermont Kitchen" has been nothing but disaster! The "Cranberry Nut Pumpkin Bread" does NOT need to bake for 90 minutes. A Cranberry Nut Brick is what came out of my oven ten minutes short of that time. "Drunken Apple Chicken" is the only meal I have ever literally pitched into the trash and then reached for the phone to call the pizza man. "Maple Magic Mousse?" Not magical. The recipe doesn't tell you where to add in the gelatin, resulting in a little too much experimentation for my taste, not to mention a disappointing result. Cranberry Apple Conserve was satisfactory, but today's recipe was the last straw for this book. "Brie Pizza with Apple Onion Sauce" - the apple onion mixture is truly disgusting! After following the instructions to the letter, I have a limp and gross-looking mess that I would not want to feed to my dog, let alone put on a pizza shell for my guests later this evening...
A rich, warm culinary experience that delivers true Vermont.......1999-11-03
I have always been suspect of cookbooks that carry beautiful covers. Often the treats inside cannot live up to the magical picture the eye is first drawn to. This book has forever changed that suspicion. From page one I felt wrapped up in the honest, poetic style with which Amy Lyon has painted upon these pages. Suddenly I was not in Ohio experimenting with a recipe, I was in a small farmhouse smelling a robust meal that only Vermont could deliver. The recipes were easy enough for me to follow, but I still felt like I had created my own masterpiece after I was finished. I could write on and on, but the chill wind of November is urging me to retreat to the kitchen and visit Vermont with Amy Lyon!
Informative, easy to follow and "delicious".......1999-11-01
The recipes were easy to follow and the results were superb. Never have I had such "delicious" results with my cooking from the many recipes I tried in this cookbook. I particually enjoyed reading the narratives at the beginning of the recipes and learning about the backgrounds of the contributors of some of the local restaurant owners.
It is so well written you forget you are reading a cook book.......1999-10-14
I bought this book in a local book store because of the title and because of the cover. I bought one for my mom as a birthday present and started reading it and could not put it down. I ended up buying another book for myself. I especially recomend the Chedder Sweet Potato and Bacon Chowder. This is a great book and I really recomend it!!!!
Customer Reviews:
Saw this one, had to have it........2002-05-14
I used to visit New England sheep farms every year on a Wool Day tour that took you from farm to farm in New Hampshire. It was so wonderful. So I had to take a look at Candace Strick's tribute to New England Sheep Farns.
Handdyed country wools are used beautifully in this book to make 26 designs. But WHY I bought this book is due to one sweater alone, an indigo and natural design that has a pattern that combines both an Escher like mosaic with a Japanese or Islamic looking pattern. The patterns uses two variants of one motif, one with an added dark band. The use of two similar small patterns makes an overall larger design that is incredibly pleasing.
There are the usual picture sweaters here. The notes about the farms are fun to read if you love New England (ok, so I am homesick a bit.) All in all, a beautiful book with sweaters that would make elegant gifts.
For those who love to knit:.......2002-02-03
This turned out to be a good purchase on many levels for me. The patterns are presented from easy to experienced, the text gives insight to the lives of the fiberists, and the pictures are very satisfying to puruse. Having just gotten into natural dyes over the past year, I also found some inspiration from some of the fiberists that were showcased in the book.
A fabulous knitting book!!.......2001-07-15
This book is extremely well done; the sweater designs are superb, and there are several interesting techniques included with some of the designs. The instructions are clear and easy to follow. I don't usually "read" knitting books, but the author's descriptions of her visits to the various farms are really interesting and fun to read. The accompanying photographs are excellent. I also really appreciated the inclusion of substitute yarn suggestions for those of us who might not have access to the specialty yarns used in the book. This book is a terrific addition to my knitting library, and I hope to purchase more of her books in the future.
For anyone seeking unique and satisfying needlecraft.......2001-02-17
Candace Strick is a talented hand knitter and designer who draws upon her many years of experience and expertise to present twenty-six classically handsome sweater patterns inspired by the unique qualities of the custom-dyed yearns from eight sheep farms across the New England countryside in Sweaters From New England Sheep Farms. Strick clearly explains how commercial yarns may be substituted for hand-dyed and blended yarns, and offers simple, easy-to-follow directions for following each of the patterns. Photos of finished sweater projects and the sheep farms enhanced her "knitter friendly" text. An ideal "how to" guide for beginners and an invaluable source of projects for experienced knitters as well, Sweaters From New England Sheep Farms is a "must" for anyone seeking a unique and satisfying needlecraft project.
A wonderful source book!.......2000-05-28
Great patterns by a master knitter emlivened by the most wonderful wool yarns searched out by the author from New England artisans. A definite must-have book for your knitting library.

Here, too, readers are granted a fascinating and touching glimpse of how two great imaginative writers interact with one another: This edition reproduces the handwritten pages from Virginia Woolf's diary in which she recounts her now-famous visit with the very aged Thomas Hardy at his home, Max Gate, in 1926.

"It is among such communities as these that happiness will find her last refuge on earth..". Against this backdrop Hardy tells a vivid story of life in rural Wessex which centres on the independent and beautiful Bathsheba Everdene. She decides to manage the farm she has inherited and finds herself in a powerful position for a woman of the 1840s. But power brings tragic complications when she has to decide between three rival suitors.

Great copy of a good novel.......2006-03-27
The norton critical edition was very useful for this novel. Having all the background about the novel as well as all the footnotes throughout the novel really aided me in my understanding of the novel. Without the information in these footnotes, the book would not have had the same meaning for me. The book itself was also very good, although a bit difficult to read. It was very interesting and it led me to a better understanding of the Victorian era and trials ordinary men at that time had to go through. A good read.
Great book, awful editing..........2006-02-15
This is a wonderful classic for many reasons. But, I urge you not to read this edition, because the notes are terrible! There are notes for things that are obvious, and a lack for those things which need them. The worst offense, however, is that one of the notes (which readers are likely to check, as it gives background on a forgotten song sung by one of the main characters) gives away not only the important action of that short chapter, but also gives away the main line of the story. Awful, awful editing...
This book is worth reading, a terific love story!.......2004-12-11
i do think it's a wonderful fiction! in the process of reading this book, i was captivated by the twisted development of the story and also Hardy's mastery language. it gives you a great picture of beautiful scenery in rural England, and there is romance, expections for what happens next. i really enjoy it !
Forget the infamous "love triangle"..........2004-03-03
In Far from the Madding Crowd, Thomas Hardy introduces us to the precarious "love square". At the core of all the turmoil is beautiful farm girl, Bathsheba Everdene - spirited, vain, intelligent and adept at toying with the hearts of men. Inevitably beguiled by her charms a humble and kind farmer, Gabriel Oak, fervently attempts to win Bathsheba's affections. Enter the competition: (suitor#2) Farmer Boldwood - a wealthy and temperate middle-aged man respected in the community, eventually plunges into maniacal obsession at the mere possibility of making the beloved Miss Everdene his wife; and (suitor#3) Sergeant Francis Troy - a dashing young philandering soldier, with his share of inner demons, ruthlessness and vanity, vies for Bathsheba's hand in marriage. Bathsheba's ultimate decision, and the cataclysm it evokes, lies at the epicenter of Hardy's unforgettable ambivalent story.
Far from the Madding Crowd, Thomas Hardy's fourth novel, saw publication in 1874 and earned him widespread popularity as a writer. A delicately woven tale of unrequited love and regret, set in the mid-19th century, Far From the Madding Crowd is a masterpiece of pure story-telling. Hardy's classic style is a pleasure to read as he masterfully brings his characters and their dealings to life. I would not hesitate to say it definitely captured my heart as another favourite.
Wild and wooly in Wessex.......2003-10-31
Few literary settings are more distinctive than Thomas Hardy's Wessex, a hilly, chalky, bucolic quilt of pastures and villages occupying the southwest of England, its residents sworn to the immutable cultural traditions of centuries long past. But it is not the goal of "Far from the Madding Crowd" to be merely a sentimental portrait of a region for which Hardy has a great affection, but a grandiose drama about the eventual union of a man and the woman he loves. In summary, Hardy does accede to a Happily Ever After ending, but how he gets to this point is why his novel deserves to be read.
It's not surprising that the novel was originally attributed to George Eliot because the protagonist, Gabriel Oak, as the novel's moral anchor, is very similar in character to Eliot's Adam Bede. Oak is trying to make a living on his own as a farmer, but a stroke of bad luck compels him to take a job as a shepherd for a beautiful young woman named Bathsheba Everdene who has recently inherited her uncle's farm and commands a large number of workers and servants. Oak iconically personifies the rustic setting, not only because of his surname but because of the intimacy with which he communes with nature, and his fondness for playing the flute seems designed to evoke an image of Pan.
Oak has an awkward history with Bathsheba -- he had known her before her windfall, but in her independent spirit she spurned his love. As the head of Weatherbury farm, however, she can't get by on her independence alone, and she needs Oak's expertise in ensuring her sheep are healthy and fit for wool production. Her romantic attention turns toward a profligate soldier named Francis Troy who, through an unlikely error, has just barely avoided wedding Fanny Robin, one of the Weatherbury servants. Bathsheba's eventual marriage to Troy breaks the hearts of Oak and another rival, a neighboring farmer named Boldwood whose affections she had once teased and whose obsessive nature erupts at a most climactic moment in the novel.
The plot developments are a flamboyant display of contrivance, but Hardy masters his devices so well it's impossible not to go along with him for the ride. As an example, consider the jilted Fanny who is so weary from sickness that she has to use a dog as a crutch to get to her destination where she finally dies; not until Hardy reveals what's written on the lid of her coffin do we (and Oak) realize the role Troy played in her death. Likewise, Troy's impulsive reaction to this incident seems like a purposely destructive measure that intends to stir even more turbulence into the story.
A large part of Hardy's appeal is his prose, which maximizes the value of a mastery of language; his sentences are like finely cut gems that demand to be held up to a light and studied for their craftsmanship. I believe that Hardy is the consummate novelist; he approaches the art of the novel as a painter looks upon a canvas, a weaver upon a tapestry, a composer upon an opera -- as the supreme representation of man in harmony with nature and in conflict with fate.

They include multigenerational farms and their methods for preserving land and heritage; farms using progressive pest and soil management techniques, whether it be Integrated Pest Management or organic farming; Community Supported Agriculture farms, where community members pre-buy a crop to guarantee income for the small farmer; and farms where those searching for a more fulfilling life have found a second career. Quick and easy recipes, using each farm's raw ingredients, make the direct, and often overlooked, connection between the farmer who grows the food and the cook who prepares it. The author also offers menus for traditional events of the state and a resource section that will allow readers and cooks to locate the farms and their products.
