Book Description

Women have been active in American business since the eighteenth century, and while they have made enormous contributions, they have also had to overcome tremendous obstacles. This encyclopedia chronicles the accomplishments of women in American business since the colonial era and discusses the historical events and issues that have concerned them. The encyclopedia additionally summarizes important legislation and organizations and covers such industries as accounting, advertising, banking, and manufacturing. Quotations from the women profiled capture their experiences in their own words. Included are more than 300 alphabetically arranged entries on such American businesswomen as:
  • Lucille Ball
  • Clara Brown
  • Hattie Carnegie
  • Liz Claiborne
  • Abby Joseph Cohen
  • Jenny Craig
  • Carleton S. Fiorina
  • Jamie Gorelick
  • Rosa Maria Hinojosa de Balli
  • Abigail Pierrepont Johnson
  • Estee Lauder
  • Christine Liang
  • Martha Stewart
  • And many more. Entries discuss the lives and careers of these women and cite works for further reading. The encyclopedia also includes roughly 100 interspersed entries on topics central to American businesswomen, including career planning, childcare, diversity, education, the finance industry, flexible work arrangements, golf, and real estate. Appendices list the most influential businesswomen in America, the top women-owned American companies, and women business leaders from particular ethnic and cultural groups, historical periods, and industries. A chronology details important events in the history of women in business, and an extensive bibliography concludes the encyclopedia.

Krisman's two-volume reference invaluable: women have been active in American business since the 18th century, but overcoming great obstacles to success in the process. Entries discuss both their lives and careers, plus add topics central to American businesswomen's issues, from career planning and childcare to flexible work arrangements and even golf. The result's a substantial reference key to any in-depth understanding of the American business environment.

    Book Description

Describing the men who have led the U.S. Treasury since its creation in 1789, this book profiles those who have held the cabinet position of Secretary of the Treasury from Alexander Hamilton to Robert Rubin. Each profile provides the reader with an understanding of the man, the problems he faced, and the contributions he made. While focusing on the economic policy problems of an era and the solutions the secretary offered, each profile also includes a vignette illustrating the secretary's personality and background. Some represent backgrounds of money and power, others backgrounds of simplicity and anonymity. Some came to the office with greater stature than when they left, while others made a significant mark on our nation's financial history. Alexander Hamilton, the first Secretary of the Treasury, besides collecting and dispersing the public revenue, made the Treasury a prime agency for promoting the country's economic development and fiscal soundness. Since the Great Depression, the Treasury's regulatory functions have been articulated and elaborated. Working with the President's cabinet and with maximum statistical data, the secretaries have sought to analyze the economic outlook and to coordinate official actions, including policies to maintain a strong and stable U.S. dollar. The essays in this book, written by 24 authorities, illustrate how the Secretary of the Treasury is responsible for formulating and recommending domestic and international financial, economic, and tax policy, participating in the formulation of broad fiscal policies with general significance for the economy, and managing the public debt. The biographies illustrate continuing themes of fiscal management as our nation evolved over 200 stormy years of history. They also provide an intimate look at 69 individual secretaries, with stories and facts about their leadership, ideas, style, and administrative prowess, together with their personality and family lives.

5 out of 5 stars If you love the Secretary of the Treasury ...........2005-09-28

If you love the Secretary of the Treasury (the position, not necessarily the man) then you'll love this book. This book is organized like a dictionary (duh) with alphabetical entries for each SoT. Everybody gets a 5-10 page bio written mostly by academic historians and economists (with a couple of banker types thrown in). There are around 25 different contributors, so the essays do vary a bit in emphasis and style, but overall the dictionary is a nice, cohesive piece of research. There's a chronological list of the SoT's up front so you can follow the office through time if you so desire.

I bought the book because I'm interested in the history of the Treasury Department. But the odd thing is -- the book is actually pretty interesting just as a history of the United States. Each short essay ends up focusing on a discrete time period and manages to capture many of the political and economic issues of the time. For example, good ol' Salmon P. Chase who was Lincoln's first SoT saw lots of interesting stuff during his career. Originally an officer of state bank, at Treasury he made recommendations for a national banking system (which was really more about establishing a stable currency and selling Treasury bonds than about regulating banks) that was the basis for the National Bank Act. Feeling rather cocky after that success, he ran against Lincoln for the Republican Presidential nomination, was quickly branded a traitor and lost out early. He came back to campaign for Lincoln, though, and as a reward he was made Chief Justice of the United States. In that capacity he oversaw the impeachment trial of President Andrew Johnson. That's the kind of stuff any history buff would enjoy.

The big weakness in the book is the lack of pictures or portraits. How do we know what these old codgers looked like? And the book only goes through Rubin. Come one guys, how about a pocket part update? Wouldn't the entry on O'Neill be worth it?

      Book Description

First published in 1984, Gerald Bordman's Oxford Companion to American Theatre is the standard one-volume source on our national theatre. Critics have hailed its "wealth of authoritative information" (Back Stage), its "fascinating picture of the volatile American stage" (The Guardian), and its "well-chosen, illuminating facts" (Newsday). Now thoroughly revised, this distinguished volume once again provides an up-to-date guide to the American stage from its beginnings to the present. Completely updated by theater professor Thomas Hischak, the volume includes playwrights, plays, actors, directors, producers, songwriters, famous playhouses, dramatic movements, and much more. The book covers not only classic works (such as Death of a Salesman) but also many commercially successful plays (such as Getting Gertie's Garter), plus entries on foreign figures that have influenced our dramatic development (from Shakespeare to Beckett and Pinter). New entries include recent plays such as Angels in America and Six Degrees of Separation, performers such as Eric Bogosian and Bill Irwin, playwrights like David Henry Hwang and Wendy Wasserstein, and relevant developments and issues including AIDS in American theatre, theatrical producing by Disney, and the rise in solo performance. Accessible and authoritative, this valuable A-Z reference is ideal not only for students and scholars of theater, but everyone with a passion for the stage.

      Book Description

An introductory survey of the industry's history precedes the dictionary proper--articles arranged in alphabetical order which describe virtually every facet of the industry. Institutions, personalities, legislation, terminology, histories of breweries and distillers, and more. Twelve appendixes enhance the book's usefulness.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Concise and Informative.......2005-11-10

With some 25,000 distilleries extant, it would be impossible to produce a comprehensive reference of American brewing. As a representative history, the book is excellent- clear, concise and informative.

      2 out of 5 stars Decent enough... I guess.......1998-02-12

This is an expensive book, at $70, and should provide much greater detail than it does. Hundreds of important regional breweries are not mentioned. The American distillery industry is also short slighted. The book makes no attempt to compile a "picture" of the brewing or hard liquor industries at any particular point in history. Nor does it provide any insight into the operational behaviors of any of the breweries or distilleries.
