Book Description
Do Taxes Matter? is the first systematic examination of the actual effects of the Tax Reform Act of 1986, the most important U.S. income tax reform of the last four decades. It presents basic information on and an analysis of a variety of different aspects of economic behavior in order to discover whether the observed changes coincide with the predictions of standard public finance models. Prior to implementation of the new law, supporters and opponents made numerous forecasts about its effect on savings, corporate investment, and other major determinants of the country's economic health. The general finding of these original contributions is that the effects of tax reform turned out to be smaller than had been anticipated.
Commissioned by the Office of Tax Policy Research of the University of Michigan, eight of the studies focus on different sectors of the economy, reviewing the predictions and carefully analyzing the evidence to determine actual effects. The ninth study draws together the results to find lessons for future changes in tax policy. Joel Slemrod is Professor of Business Economics and Public Policy and Director of the Office of Tax Policy Research at the University of Michigan.
Contents: The Economic Impact of Tax Reform Act of 1986, Joel Slemrod. Investment, Tax Policy, and the Tax Reform Act of 1986, Alan J. Auerbach, Kevin Hassett. The Impact of the 1986 Tax Reform on Personal Saving, Jonathan Skinner, Daniel Feenberg. Effects of the Tax Reform Act of 1986 on Corporate Financial Policy and Organizational Form, Roger H. Gordon, Jeffrey K. MacKieMason. Taxation and Housing Markets: Preliminary Evidence on the Effects of Recent Tax Reforms, James M. Poterba. The Impact of the Tax Reform Act of 1986 on Foreign Direct Investment to and from the United States, Joel Slemrod. The Impact of Tax Reform on Charitable Giving: A 1989 Perspective, Charles T. Clotfelter. The Impact of the Tax Reform Act of 1986 on State and Local Fiscal Behavior, Paul N. Courant, Edward M. Gramlich. Foreign Responses to U.S. Tax Reform, John Whalley. Book Description
Global warming is a serious threat to the stability of world climate and to economic prosperity in some regions. The book offers a theoretical analysis which focuses on double dividend issues. Moreover, the ecological tax reform in Germany and the options of modern energy policy are described and evaluated. The volume presents innovative model simulations and analyzes, in the context of the model, the benefits of a modified tax reform, based on a Schumpeterian approach. Finally, implications for the European Union and other countries are discussed.

Book Description
During the past decade the issue of a general welfare double dividend (an improvement in environmental quality combined with a positive welfare effect) triggered by a tax shift from labor to energy resources has been extensively debated. In this book, Kurt Kratena studies the employment effects of revenue neutral tax shifts from labor to energy, and measures the impact on theoretical and empirical models of the European labor market.
A common theoretical framework is devised to analyze the impact of environmental tax reform. Various `labor market regimes' (competitive labor markets, union wage bargaining and efficiency wages) are derived and taken as the starting point for different specifications of the labor market. The theoretical outcomes of tax shifts in these different labor market regimes are then analyzed and compared. The results reveal that whereas an econometric-based multi-sectoral model yields significant double dividend effects, a general equilibrium model only finds employment double dividend effects. The book also highlights the potentially positive economic consequences of environmental tax reform such as a shift in demand from energy to non-energy goods.
This book provides a concise appraisal of the general double dividend question combined with an innovative analysis of the employment double dividend effect. It utilizes extensive empirical evidence and reveals the sensitivity of the various theoretical concepts surrounding the debate. This book will be of interest and relevance to academics in the fields of environmental economics, labor theory and fiscal studies.

Book Description
Fiscal and environmental policies should be made mutually reinforcing. Green tax reforms imply not only the introduction of specific ecotaxes, but also the removal or modification of a number of existing taxes and tax provisions having detrimental effects on the environment. New ecotaxes can be compensated by the reduction of other existing ones such as income and labor taxes. Most OECD countries have introduced various ecotaxes, but only a few are implementing comprehensive green tax reforms. This report reviews the state of the art and the lessons which can be drawn as to the competitiveness, social equity, and employment implications of green taxes.

Hospitals In Need Of Funds.......2001-04-28
This book outlines a unique problem in America--hospitals are hurting for money. Many of us, after being hit with high cost for medical care do not understand when a medical center comes to us for a donation. This book explores the real need and why it is relevant. It is a great rference for those of us who raise money for hospitals, and provide us with answers to questions when asked "Why should I give."
Product Description
This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A970604. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Starting with Hungary in 1984 and followed thereafter by other countries in Eastern Europe and former Soviet Union, the process of transition from centrally planned socialist economies to market oriented economies has been characterized by uneven performance. Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, and Slovenia have each made significant progress in economic, political and judicial reforms while Russia, and many other countries of the former Soviet Union have lagged in implementing broad economic and political reforms and their economic performance has suffered as a result. Other countries from Central and Eastern Europe are placed between those two extremes. The objective of my thesis is to examine the development of effective and efficient tax systems in the transitional economies and the influence of tax reform on economic performance. Without an effective tax system the state is unable to collect revenues for financing government expenditures; 'gray zones' develop in the economy, which discourage investors and private entrepreneurs; and the rule of law diminishes over time. Without systemic tax reform economic growth will slow or decline; the social costs of reform will increase; and political pressure will mount to slow or reverse reforms.

From the author: Benefit reductions will likely be a part of the eventual Social Security reform in the United States. This research attempts to quantify the intragenerational and intergenerational impacts of different benefit reduction proposals on the incomes of the elderly. Reforms include across--the--board benefit cuts, price indexing, and reductions to the cost--of--living adjustment. Restoring the projected 75--year balance for the Trust Fund through benefit reductions will significantly lower benefits, though the impacts vary by type of reform. Nonetheless, the savings for the Social Security Trust Fund will exceed the accompanying increases in the poverty gap, leaving room to provide minimal income guarantees.

Excellent Reference.......2003-06-05
Although not the most interesting "read", this is a great reference book for gardening in South Florida. Straight forward without too much fluff. The section on pest control is a little heavy on identifying pests and little light on how to control them but the rest of the book is very clear on the basics. Probably not the best book for an advanced gardener but I highly recommend it for the novice like me who wants the nitty gritty on how to get going in Florida but doesn't care about a fancy looking book.
Very good reference for selecting bedding plants in Florida.......2001-09-22
I thought this was an excellent reference for selecting Florida bedding plants. I wanted a book that had lots of pictures of various plants and told me when and where to plant them. This book does that. It is limited on pest control, but has a good basic section on digging and prepping your bedding areas. It would be a great reference to take with you to the nursery when you are trying to decide which plants to purchase for your beds. It has more color photos for identification of bedding plants than most of the Florida gardening books out there.
Poor.......2000-05-18
I was so dispappointed in the presentation made in this book that I sent it back. The cover and even title give the impression that the book will include photgraphic and descriptive information regarding landscaping. What actually comes across is a very boring, poorly presented reference type of book that simply seems like an elaborate dictionary on various landscape terminology. The photographic connections were especially done poorly; all pictures relating to topics were simply united together in a large section at the back of the book. When a reference is made by an author regarding a specific subject, it is certainly best understood and appreciated by the reader when both are on the same page. It was also misleading in their title reference to Florida plants, shrubs, etc., that there would be direct inclusion of information of those subjects, but all that comes across is very general information relating to the words themselves. I have been working on my own Florida yard area now for over 5 years, enjoying what I have been learning by simple hands-on techniqe and questions to my neighbors. None of my own 26 personal plants were even directly mentioned in the book. Again, possibly some of the topics regarding pests or plant diseases might have been appreciated if the information would have been on the same pages as the related photographs--needing to turn clear to the the back of the book every time was a frustrating way to try and understand the connections.
Book Description
The diversity of woody plants in the Southeast is unparalleled in North America. Native Trees of the Southeast is a practical, compact field guide for the identification of the more than 225 trees native to the region, from the Carolinas and eastern Tennessee south through Georgia into northern Florida and west through Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Arkansas into eastern Texas. For confident identification, nearly 600 photographs, close to 500 of them in color, illustrate leaves, flowers and fruits or cones, bark, and twigs with buds. Full descriptions are accompanied by keys for plants in both summer and winter condition, as well as over 200 range maps. Crucial differences between plants that may be mistaken for each other are discussed and notes on the uses of the trees in horticulture, forestry, and for wildlife are included.

Florida Landscape Plants: Native and Exotic.......2007-01-09
I bought this book about 10 years ago and it turned into my Florida "Bible". Just about every plant, especially garden plants, is included. On one page you can see all the necessary information that is needed to be a successful Florida gardener.
I loaned it to a friend, a plant "nut", recently transplanted from Pennsylvania. She was trying to grow plants the old northern way, which wasn't working out. Eventually success is growing in her garden.
The book became a Christmas gift and a "Welcome to Florida" gift (and a gift for me, my old book is very worn) this year. Use it and enjoy.
The Florida plant chronicles.......2005-12-31
FLORIDA LANDSCAPE PLANTS lists native and non-native plants growable in the northern, central or southern parts of the state. It's an updated version of the late Professor John V Watkins' book. Professor Watkins taught landscape horticulture at the University of Florida. But he was well known outside the campus, for his gardening- and landscape-related radio series and writings published as books and magazine articles.
Professors Thomas J Sheehan and Robert J Black fill the empty space left with Professor Watkins' death. They've added to and modernized his classic landscape plant manual. Throughout, they've stayed true to Professor Watkins' original mission of writing for an audience of university students, nurserymen, master gardeners, and homeowners of our Gulf states.
Their book is nicely organized for that purpose. There's a listing of over 400 plants. The book closes with a helpful model planting guide, list of invasives, glossary, and an index of common and scientific names.
Their book gives more information and puts in more plants than the original work by Professor Watkins. But their book isn't comprehensive. It's not a case of everything Professor Watkins listed, along with add-ons. In fact, they've left out some "old favorites," partly because some have been called "invasive" by the Florida Exotic Plant Council. In part, too, they wanted the book to fall within the page range known as "popular size."
FLORIDA LANDSCAPE PLANTS is nevertheless very workable, with a lot of clearly illustrated and organized information and with no useless information. Each plant is listed by common name. The scientific name is given below, with the way to say it and the English meaning. There's also a sketch of each plant. I miss the beauty of color drawings and photos. But the black-and-whites are so well done that the plants should be easily known by form and shape, often more telling than color.
The information is conveniently slotted into family; relatives; type of plant; height [in Florida]; zone [in north, central or south Florida]; how to identify; habit of growth; foliage; flowers; fruits; season of maximum color; landscape uses; habitat; light and soil requirement; salt tolerance; availability; culture; propagation; and pests. Sometimes, there's a note slot, such as for sweet acacia "This plant is cultivated in the south of France for its flowers, which are made into a very fine perfume."
FLORIDA LANDSCAPE PLANTS would be an interesting read not only for gardeners and landscapers. I was impressed with how many of the plants are already common household words as household plants: Dieffenbachia, ficus, jade plant, spider plant, and wandering jew. Others are already known as "public places" trees, such as my favorites: American hornbeam, black olive, geiger, gumbo limbo, lignum vitae, red maple, river birch, and southern magnolia. Still others are already known as rock garden plants, such as my favorites: agave, aloe, aluminum plant, bush zinnia, Florida yew, kalanchoe, peperomia, ponytail palm, prickly pear, royal fern, spineless yucca, and variegated pineapple. And still others are already known as water garden plants, such as my favorites: African iris, Asiatic jasmine, black tupelo, firecracker plant, galingale, ginger lily, oleander, peperomia, pittosporum, primrose jasmine, sweet bay, and torch ginger.
It was particularly interesting to see how many of my favorites were listed as natives, such as: Adam's needle, beauty berry, buttonwood, coontie, frangipani, fringe tree, seven year apple, Spanish bayonet, sweet shrub, and tulip tree. In many cases, with natives we reduce the use of hazardous materials such as pesticides. For natives have their own natural controls. They're part of wider plant, bug, bird and animal communities that have built up a balance between over- and under-population in the same space over the same time. Just as important, natives reduce yardwaste. So many have attractive flowers, fruits and parts that can be reused as and recycled into artistic creations, such as dried bouquets and holiday wreaths.
Helpful for the new Florida resident.......2005-10-08
I purchased this book because it was highly recommended in a Florida Gardening magazine. I am new to Florida recently moving here from the Northeast. I was looking for someway to link plants I see in neighbors' yards with what might work in our spaces.
The only thing I was disappointed in is that the book's pictures are not in color. Colors would help me better link plants I see with what's in the book.
Florida Landscape Plants.......2000-04-19
This is a worthwhile book for a number of reasons, however, it has one major omission. The positive factors: 1) Excellent plant descriptions including details like salt tolerance level; 2) wonderful (and most appreciated) treatment of botanic names by giving the pronunciation and derivation of the Latin words (Thanks!). The omission concerns color photographs of the plants discussed. The publisher included a few color pages of plant drawings which are mostly useless and confusing. A good garden book needs to have extensive color photographs. I am sure that the author would agree!!
The absolute last word on Florida Landscape Plants!.......1999-05-24
This is the text book used to teach horticulture classes and plant identification at the University of Florida. All Horticulture graduates and Landscape Architecture graduates at UF have studied from this book. Dr.s Watkins and Sheehan have put more than 5 decades of combined Florida horticultural expertise into this book.

little new information.......2004-01-10
This is Don Hastings second book about trees.Little new ground is covered in his second book.Hastings offers little to no information on newer cultivars that have been produced since his last book on trees. He also reuses some of the photographs from his first book. His first book is much better and also covers shrubs, roses, and lawns.A more detailed look on specific pests ,plant diseases, and their controls would have benefited the book also.

Book Description
The inferiority of women, and the inherent sinfulness of humanity, are demeaning ideas arising from a literal acceptance of the Jewish Creation Story in Genesis. But Kabbalah (Jewish mysticism) shows these concepts are false, and in explaining why Dr. Judd reveals the inner beauty of Scripture that contains no such negative or limiting ideas.

The Symbols of Myth.......2004-12-01
The Female, The Tree, and Creation
James N. Judd, 2000
"...the symbols of myth form a picture language which enables us to integrate both the inner and outer consciousness and so receive the benefits of greater wisdom from the central core of our being." ~ J. N. Judd
I cannot remember the last book I read on a "religious" topic but with a title like The Female, The Tree, and Creation, I could not resist further investigation! James N. Judd takes the traditional Judeo-Christian interpretation of the story of First Man and First Woman, dissects it, and returns it to us with the original archetypal symbology renewed. Dr. Judd's assimilation of the creation mythologies of the Christian Bible, the Torah, Kabbalahist tradition, ancient Egyptian worship, Eastern metaphysics, and Native American cultures brings us a renewed sense of the hope of the story of Adam and Eve and how that story is still relative to our daily mystical journeys. We cannot afford to continue to ignore how the creation story evolved from a celebration of the life-force vibration to the presumed guilt of the female. James N. Judd raises the bar for self-published books by writing a clear, insightful, and intelligent treatise with introductions by Rabbi Joseph H. Gelberman and Dr. Carol Parrish-Harra.
Dr. Judd explains in clear, layman's language the difference between reading the story of Adam and Eve as a teaching myth as opposed to an accurate historical account. Drawing on evidence as long ago as the Sumerian culture in 7500 B.C.E., Judd offers us insights into the ancient view of the serpent as a symbol of a powerful life-giving force and the female as the symbol of our receptiveness to our mystical connection to all that is. In this context, the serpent is seen as the one who encourages Adam to step out into the world and know the existence of our duality in order to truly understand where consciousness begins. God does not cast out his children for eating forbidden fruit but rather allows his children's souls to experience the fullness of creation.
In The Female, The Tree, and Creation, Judd examines each archetypal symbol in the creation story, how the creation story represents the evolution of our human spiritual experience, and the turn that the creation story takes from one of the life-force to one of guilt and shame. Judd does an excellent job of engaging us in the history of the agricultural societies of the middle east and the advent of the hunter society of the Semitic tribes as they conquered those societies. It appears that this change in political power was also the beginning of the turn from the Kabbalahist mysticism inherent in our myth of creation to the current Judeo-Christian interpretation. Now we have the serpent as a slimy creature that seduces the female who in turn seduces the male and everyone winds up thrown out of the house! When you think about it, God must have really been off his game the day he created a couple of humans with so little intelligence. Dr. Judd truly excels as he finishes with an analysis of the "if" and where modern religious practice is going in the 21st century.
James N. Judd is a thoughtful author who has presented us with a clear vision of the creation story in relation to the Jewish mystical tradition of Kabbalah. The appendix of the book gives excellent details of the similarities of the ancient Egyptian gods and goddesses and the concepts that became an integral part of the Kabbalah. References are contemporary and thorough representing a broad range of sources. As a female fortunate enough to be born in a society and in a time when women have fought for and achieved greater equality, I recommend reading The Female, The Tree, and Creation by anyone seeking a greater understanding of the perception of women in those middle eastern societies that have become part of our heightened global awareness since 9/11.
