Book Description
Following German reunification in 1990, East Germany's centrally planned economy was abolished and replaced by West Germany's social market economy. Western Germany has since provided vast financial support to aid the transformation, and enable eastern Germany to catch-up with western Germany's productivity and living standards. This book evaluates the main events and their outcomes since mid-1990 and the associated policy issues. The authors assess the medium to long term growth prospects of eastern Germany and the wider implications for western Germany and Europe. The Economics of German Unification analyses the economic process of assimilating eastern Germany into the institutions and performance levels of western Germany. It includes original research as well as providing an overview of existing literature. Among the topics discussed are: - the relative backwardness of East Germany's economy - the impact of monetary and economic integration - restructuring and privatization - labor market and industrial policy, including an analysis of wage restraint and cost reduction - the prospects for eastern Germany catching-up economically with western Germany - the repercussions for German competitiveness nationally and within the wider European context This book will be welcomed by academics, researchers and undergraduates interested in the economics of transition, comparative economic systems, political economy and the European business environment.

Book Description
Although German unification has had a profound impact on European integration and economic development, very few studies of the East German economy exist. The editors of this volume have therefore brought together specialists in economics and politics who analyze such important issues as privatization, monetary reform and unemployment. The aim is to provide scholars and generally interested readers with a critical understanding of the complex processes of German unification and to identify the general lessons that can be learnt from their analysis for economies and societies that undergo such profound transformations as has been the case in East Germany since the early 1990s.

Product Description
Credit Scores & Credit Reports provides the first thorough examination of the all-important, but little understood, Credit Scoring and Credit Reporting systems. The Second Edition of this highly-acclaimed book enables consumers to understand how both of these systems actually work, and what they can do to improve their FICO scores, and to ensure their credit reports are accurate. Importantly, the book also describes how the system sometimes doesn't work, and how hundreds of thousands - if not millions - of consumers have been frustrated in their efforts to correct errors in their credit reports. Moreover, it explains: *Link between credit reports and the burgeoning problem of identity theft *How credit card companies use credit scoring to raise your interest rates *The role of credit scores in auto and homeowners insurance *The difference between mortgage rates for consumers with excellent, good, fair and poor credit scores *The damages to consumers and their creditworthiness flowing from credit report inaccuracy and identity theft *Credit reports and debt collection *The debate over credit scoring and discrimination *The politics of credit reporting The current credit reporting system keep detailed financial histories on more than 200 million Americans. That is why virtually everyone has a stake in the system, and why Stephen Brobeck, executive director of the Consumer Federation of America said, "There are few books I think all consumers should read. This is one of them. It is a well-informed, informative, and a well-written guide to a subject of great and growing importance to consumers."
Customer Reviews:
Bravo for Evan Hendricks! He hits the nail on the head! .......2007-08-27
He not only explains the costly effects of our severely flawed credit reporting system, but he paints a remarkable picture of the incredible maze most have to travel when simply trying to maintain an accurate credit identity. It appears that Mr. Hendricks has ruffled a few feathers in the credit industry -and for that, we should all be thankful! Give Me Back My Credit!
A must read for every American consumer out there.......2007-02-04
Very well thought out book. Well structured and a must read if you are a consumer in America - otherwise the system could be hurting you...
Plenty of eye openers in the book...Well worth the price...
My only negative comment is it can be pretty technical and have a lot of legal verbiage, but with the subject's context, it has to be...
I disagree with the one comment saying it was repetitive...the only insight we have to the intrical parts of the credit system is through legal cases...so the history is very important...if anything, I'm anxious for developments to take place to fix the system...
It's another one of those topics where just because you're born, you have to be aware of it and understand how it works...
A Necessary Read... but Very Repetetive-.......2006-11-21
As a mortgage lender I knew this book would be a necessary read. The first half of the book talks about the in's and out's of the FICO scoring model. The information is extremely useful for both consumers and those in the lending industry. However, the second half of the book just repeats over and over the same things. 'id theft causes emotional trauma' is talked about at least 15 times in different examples and it starts to get useless. Additionally the author goes through dozens of court cases, papers written, and quotes different people on things regarding the credit industry. Again its just turns into a repetetive and useless history lesson. I rated it 4 stars though just because there aren't many good books on the subject, and this one did contain some great gems of information.
Mis-leading title and expected more about scoring.......2006-07-02
This book doesn't follow through on analyzing the credit scoring process a the title suggests. It focuses mostly on court cases involving consumers and credit reporting companies instead of getting to the meat and potatoes of credit scoring. In short, it has some pretty enlightening information but not about credit scoring. I'd recommend Liz Weston's Your Credit Score and KE Varner's The Insider's Guide to Credit Repair for additional information.
Great.......2006-01-06
A great book with important and useful information!

Good reasonable information.......2006-05-02
Level headed approach to handle a problem that could be desaterous.
The book is easy to read and follow the steps for protection from and recovery of damaged credit.
A Home Security System .......2005-06-19
This is not the feel good book of the summer, it almost scares the pants off of you given the many different ways faceless criminals can rudely interrupt your life with identity theft. This book details out many of the identity theft scams that are prevalent today. It shows you, maybe in a way that is a touch over the top, just how vulnerable you are. On the positive side it also gives you the tools to fight back and the steps you can take to protect yourself. It also instructs you on what you can do if you become an identity theft victim. The book details out how the world of credit operates and your rights and responsibilities.
The current world we live in enables us to be discriminated against in the credit world because of our age, gender or marital status. The privacy of our financial information may be compromised and is so widely disseminated that it is making it more and more vulnerable to identity theft all the time. That is why this book is important, it gives the reader some tools to help us remain safe or at least less vulnerable. Overall the author gives the reader a number of useful and well described tips for how to keep as safe as possible and how to fix problems if they come up. It is a bit on the dramatic side, but if you are a victim of this type of crime then the descriptions are probably right on the mark.
