    Book Description

China and India's new-found interest in trade and investment with Africa - home to 300 million of the globe's poorest people and the world's most formidable development challenge - presents a significant opportunity for growth and integration of the Sub-Saharan continent into the global economy. Africa's Silk Road finds that China and India's South-South commerce with Africa is about far more than natural resources, opening the way for Africa to become a processor of commodities and a competitive supplier of goods and services to these countries - a major departure from its long established relations with the North. A growing number of Chinese and Indian businesses active in Africa operate on a global scale, work with world-class technologies, produce products and services according to the most demanding standards, and foster the integration of African businesses into advanced markets. There are significant imbalances, however, in these emerging commercial relationships. These can be addressed through a series of reforms in all countries:

*"At-the-border" reforms, such as elimination of China and India's escalating tariffs on Africa's leading exports, and elimination of Africa's tariffs on certain inputs that make exports uncompetitive *"Behind-the-border" reforms in Africa, to unleash competitive market forces and strengthen its basic market institutions *"Between-the-border" improvements in trade facilitation mechanisms to decrease transactions costs *Reforms that leverage linkages between investment and trade, to allow African businesses to participate in global production networks that investments by Chinese and Indian firms can generate.

¿The Road To A New Africa, An Essay To The African People¿ is a comprehensive analysis of the difficulties facing Africa and a comprehensive proposal of how Africa can overcome these difficulties. The book is intended to offer concrete proposals to the African People to help address the two of the three fundamental sources of Africa¿s problems ¿ political structure and political system. A third fundamental source of Africa¿s problem is political ideology, which is addressed in another book. "The Road to a New Africa, An essay to the African People" is a proposal for Africans to consider as Africa searches for a way to a better tomorrow. The essay is my contribution to the search for an appropriate and acceptable means to achieve the aspiration of the African People, which is Peace and Prosperity. The essay is to instill a new understanding of the imperative need to create United Africa in order to achieve Peace and Prosperity in Africa and to establish that there is an acceptable way to reach total African political union.

1 out of 5 stars Incoherant rambling. Not a book........2007-03-01

Wow. I finished reading this book last night and I'm still in shock and awe that such a worthless piece of crap was published. The book isn't an autobiography. It's merely a bunch of rambling opinions given by Bill on a variety of basketball-related topics. There is no mention of Bill's early life, his high school career, or his family. The book isn't organized in any obvious way, and contained several typos and grammatical errors, which wouldn't be found in a serious publication. I found myself glossing over many parts of this book, simply because Bill repeats himself over and over. What was especially annoying was that he constantly refers to John Wooden as "John Wooden," when everyone else is referred to by their first name. For example, Larry Bird is referred to as Larry, after first mention, which is normal in an informal book like this. But, after being mentioned five thousand times, John Wooden is still John Wooden, as if readers would confuse the legendary coach with a different John who coached at UCLA for over 30 years. What a freaking retard Bill is! I got this at the library. I refuse to spend any more time on this. Have fun with it.

Bill Walton has lead an interesting life, an ideal life for autobiographical purposes. He has always been reflective and opinionated. He has always marched to the beat of his own drum. He was also one of the greatest collegiate basketball players. He very well could have become one of the greatest pro players, too, if not for continual foot problems. Still, he managed to win 2 NBA titles.
Walton discusses all of these things in his book. Unfortunately, he also leaves a lot out of this book. Not much is said about his private life. Not enough is said about the Patty Hearst incident. Perhaps most important for a basketball autobiography, not enough basketball stories are told.
Walton discusses his love and admiration for legendary coach John Wooden. He also talks about Larry Bird and Kevin McHale. Still, Walton played with so many great players and characters, I expected more interesting stories. Walton is known for doing his own thing, yet at too many points in this book, he comes off as restrained. That is the real shame of this book.
Overall, basketball fans will enjoy the book. To be honest, I ended up being a bigger fan of Walton after reading it. You will probably gain a bit of respect for him along the way as well or at least you will enjoy the journey.

4 out of 5 stars THE RED HEAD SCORES.......2004-11-02

I ENJOYED THIS BOOK. I FOUND BILL TO BE HONEST, REFRESHING AND OPINIONATED. I DON'T AGREE WITH SOME BUT HE MAKES MANY GOOD POINTS. HE DOES NOT GET INTO HIS PRIVATE LIFE TOO MUCH BUT THAT IS WHY IT IS CALLED PRIVATE. I ENJOYED HIS STORIES AND PHILOSOPHIES OF JOHN WOODEN AND THE OTHER COACHES HE PLAYED FOR. WALTON WAS A REBEL IN HIS YOUNGER DAYS BUT HAS CALMED DOWN. HIS FEET INJURIES TOOK AWAY A GREAT CAREER. HE WAS THE BEST PASSING CENTER I HAVE SEEN. THIS BOOK IS FOR BASKETBALL FANS AND DEADHEADS. (GROUPIES OF THE GRATEFUL DEAD)

2 out of 5 stars LIKE WALTON'S CAREER, SOMETIMES HE'S THERE, AND SOMETIMES..........2002-05-14

I still remember Bill Walton's 44 point performance in the NCAA Championship game in 1973, maybe the greatest NCAA final performance ever. Walton followed his collegiate career at UCLA at the end of the 1974 college basketball season with an injury filled NBA career with just three full seasons, his championship year with the Portland Trailblazers in 1977 in his first full pro season (he was hurt most of the 1974-75 season and the 195-76 season)--still Portland's only championship--1985 with the LA Clippers (he missed all of the Clippers' 1981-82 and 1982-83 seasons), and an unusual season as Sixth Man of the Year in 1986 as he won a championship with the Boston Celtics.

After more injuries Walton retired and started a new career as a basketball announcer for NBC, and I've been impressed:he's good, he's honest, and he's funny! And he's parlayed the broadcasting into a career as an entertaining writer, too, as his articles are a blend of former New York sportswriter Dick Young and every ultraliberal who ever played a guitar, protested, or smoked marijuana. So I was expecting a lot from NOTHING BUT NET, but as much as I hate to admit it except for the stories about his 3 seasons with the Boston Celtics--particularly a one on one game with Kevin McHale and his thoughts about Larry Bird--Walton leaves out too much of the obvious, like what happened to his wife, the mother of his 4 sons? And what about all the controversies involving drugs, the Draft, and Patty Hearst that he got into at UCLA? And what about the feud between him and John Salley at NBC?

Just like Walton's career, sometimes in NOTHING BUT NET Walton is there, and sometimes he's not.

David Stauffer gives out some reasons why Cisco is so successful in the Internet industry. Among all the factors, I think ...people¡¦ is the most important one. It is because they can generate creative ideas for the company and so they are valuable asset. The term ...internet ecosystem¡¦ and last minute management¡¦ are important terms as well.

The author, David Stauffer, illustrate a clear picture of Cisco's business and management to readers.

Stauffer refreshes our view of today's business world. Stepping into internet age, IT should become an important issue for every business. "Internet Ecosystem", created by John Chamber, helps Cisco to be an sucessful international organization. By this internet ecosystem, Cisco forms a diversified and close relationship with it's suppliers/customers/partners, etc. leads to "last minute management", which is widely adopted by most business.

Apart from IT, Cisco treats innovative employees as their valuable assets. Cisco creates a superior working environment for them to enhance their performance/team work spirit/self-esteem, etc. Cisco makes many acquisitions for new technologies, but more specific, they acquire people for knowledge/creativity, say for the next generation products.

This book would help you to know more about the fast changing business world. Be well-prepared, are you ready?

David Stauffer's impressive new book seeks to explain why Cisco is one of the world's most important companies. At the heart of the book - and perhaps the company - is the management style of Cisco CEO John Chambers, who once worked for IBM and Wang. The book illustrates how Chambers noted the problems at both of his former employers and resolved that they would never show up at Cisco. The author also covers Cisco's famed acquisition strategy, and explains how the company targets employees, rather than profits, in its acquisition sights. Although the author seems enamored with the company, it's tough to argue with his main points, especially when he cites other companies, such as Oracle and Microsoft, that have replicated Cisco strategies. We [...] recommend this definitive and entertaining book as an insightful look into a pivotal new-economy company, and the strategies that got it to where it is today.

This is a good, solid book detailing many of the basic management attributes that have made Cisco successful. The combination of consistent management principles joins a unique company culture instilled by John Chambers with the result that Cisco has enjoyed remarkable success through the last fifteen years.

Core lessons include: 1. Put people first before products, profits and everything else. Cisco has had only 7% attrition while typical Silicon Valley turnover is closer to 25%. 2. Listen constantly to customers. Serve your core customers from start to end. Rumor has it that John Chambers gives his home phone number to every customer he speaks with! 3. Cisco's philosophy towards growing the business through acquisition in order to reduce time-to-market while also maintaining a technology leadership position. And more!

                      Good lessons.

I think Nothing But Net was okay, but it wasn't too exciting. I think it could be better, it wasn't too extreme. I thought Miles should have told the Coach that he didn't like that he was getting on his back more than the others. But Miles shouldn't have showed off that much, he should have just shaped up! I thought this was going to be a better book.

The Cape Breton Grizzly Bears are a bad news basketball team--they haven't won a single game all season. But the rules say a team from their region has to play in the Nova Scotia Invitational Tournament in Halifax, and they're it.

Their "star" player is the harebrained Chip Carson, whose constant scheming and practical jokes keep his coach and teammates permanently on edge. Once in Halifax, however, Chip's antics rally the team, driving them on an improbable run for the title.

Nothing But Net is the hilarious story of a bedraggled group of basketball misfits who turn certain defeat into heart-warming victory.

                                    Book Description

While there have been many recent biographies and autobiographies of famous basketball players and coaches, fewer books have come out which explore the game from the street player's perspective. Behind the scenes, at playgrounds all across the country, men and women of all ages and backgrounds are playing pickup basketball, with each court developing its own culture and identity, with rules all the regulars learn to obey.

Much of Nothing But Net! looks at the behavior of these "characters" and examines what draws them to the court in the first place. From the guy who threatens "to get his piece" to the player who commits an even graver offence--never passing the ball--Nothing But Net! shows how these relative strangers learn to form social contracts and in most cases to respect one another.

At once quirky and absorbing, Nothing But Net! provides a fascinating look into a multicultural subculture, one which says much about the identity of the American male.

                                    Book Description

A remarkable feature of the period since 1970 has been the patterns of rapid and turbulent change in financing behaviour and financial structure in many advanced countries. These patterns have, in turn, often been marked by rising indebtedness, default on loans and periods of financial instability, whether in the non-financial sectors, the financial sector or both. This book explores, both in theoretical and empirical terms, the nature of the relationships between underlying phenomena; namely levels and changes in borrowing (debt), vulnerability to default in the corporate and household sectors (financial fragility), and widespread disorder in the financial sector (systemic risk). Davis focuses on the wider generality of the phenomena at issue whereby similar patterns are observable in several countries, but not in others, as well as in the international capital markets themselves. Particular attention is paid to the importance of the nature and evolution of financial structure to the genesis of instability. Given the international scope of the analysis, the work is germane to the study of the devlopment of financial systems in all advanced countries, as well as the euromarkets. It will be of particular relevance, however, in the US, Japan, Germany, France, the UK, and Canada, Italy, Australia, Sweden, Norway, Finland, whose experience is examined in detail. In this expanded and revised edition, the macroeconomic consequences of fragility and the appropriate policy response are examined in particular detail, with the analysis focusing on macroeconomic performance in eleven countries over 1988-93. A wide range of issues relating to financial stability, including risk in payments systems, derivatives, and property lending, are also considered.

Having re-read this book for the second time,I have to confess that I still have severe doubts about the validity of the underlying assessments. The fundamental problem of the book is its pre-occuptation with the anglo-saxon shorttermist mentality which leads to ultimately misleading conclusions regarding monetary policy. Ultimately a firm orientation of monetary policy towards the medium-term objective of price stability - in the context of an 'ordnungspolitische' well-based broader economic and social framework - it the best guarantor of the financial and economic stability which is essential to reap the full fruits of economic progress. The experience of Germany over the last 30 years - which, in contrast to the poor record of the anglo-saxon economies, is characterised by a solid track record of price stability combined with the absence of notable financial fragility - is powerful evidence of the enduring truth of this proposition. While this view may not be en vogue with many financial commentators - especially those in the anglo-saxon presse - I am convinced that this will change radically in the near future, as events unfold in the US and reveal the inherent weakness of monetary policies orientated to cyclical fine-tuning and the support of stock marktes.

5 out of 5 stars A tour de force of economic analysis.......1998-05-01

This book - authored by E.P. Davis the foremost expert in the study of financial crises - provides a comprehensive overview of the theory of financial fragility together with a review of a detailed review of a number of case studies. These range from the Herstatt crisis of the 1970s to the housing booms/busts in the UK and Scandanavia in the 1980s/1990s. It is essential reading for all economists seeking to understand the underlying factors at work in generating financial fragility. It should be required reading for those responsible for the supervision of financial institutions.
