Nobel laureate, leader of operational research during the Second World War, scientific advisor to the British government, President of the Royal Society, member of the House of Lords, Blackett was also denounced as a Stalinist apologist for opposing American and British development of atomic weapons, subjected to FBI surveillance, and named as a fellow traveler on George Orwell's infamous list.

After returning from Nationals, our Coach recommended this book to the fencers at our club looking to improve our overall performance next year. Although coming back with a 2nd in Sabre isn't too shabby! I bought 2 copies, one for my son who is going into his 3rd year of fencing and 1 for myself, a beginning fencer. We are both finding it very useful. My son likes the review of the basics and we both like the drills in each section.
I would suggest this book to any fencer looking to perfect form and skill. I think experienced fencers even need a look back to the basics sometimes. The only reason I gave it 4 stars out of 5 was because I had a hard time giving 5 stars to a book that makes me break out a sweat!

Another classic. Good pictures and easy to understand text. Full of drills to perform alone or with another person. Quite simply one of the best American texts available.

A great source of information.......2006-11-06

We use this as a textbook for our beginner fencers. The illustrations are very clear, with multiple viewpoints, and the directions are very clear. It also is great for my assistant instructors to use for the tips on what to look for when a fencer is doing something wrong! A great book! I reccommend it for all the salles!

Excellent "How To" Book For Beginners.......2004-11-24

Ms. Cheris' "Fencing: Steps to Success" is a worthwhile purchase for new fencers. (My 5 star rating presumes that the reader is a novice fencer.) As a new fencer myself (1 year), I've read several books on fencing in addition to taking weekly lessons. Ms. Cheris' book provides clear, concise instructions and excellent diagrams; and includes numerous recommended drills that help beginners properly form their technique. While no substitute for lessons, the book is great as a companion to live instruction. For beginners, I strongly recommned this book over Nick Evangelista's "The Art and Science of Fencing". (Although Mr. Evangelista's book does do a better job in giving the reader the historical context of today's modern sport fencing.) "Fencing: Steps to Success" is a valuable learning aid for those new to the sport.

A good book on fencing.......2002-01-19

This is one of the best books on fencing writen by an American. It's major weakness is that it often attempts to teach both foil and epee and the same time . The author does address modern fencing , a subject often ingored. This book is good for the person that knows how to fence and wants some pointers; not a good read for beginners . A good book but kept me wanting more, for example the author tells nothing of how she took up the sport and what it's done for her. Close only 4 of 5 stars.

Good book for people who like to try new things.......2007-05-31

"Feast Without Yeast" was necessary for me since not only do I have CRS but am also extremely allergic to yeast. However, because I was sick for three years before doctors realized what was wrong, my body (or my mind) learned to dislike 'new' foods in fear of becoming ill.

This book is fantastic if you're not a picky eater, or if you don't like eating the same dozen items over and over again. I appreciated the depth in which the author discussed the reason he write this book, and am glad it's on my shelf for reference!

Feast Without Yeast.......2007-05-15

I was so happy to find yummy salad dressings in here that will work for me. I have to cut down on fruit and eat more veggies, but I couldn't have vinegar or dairy. This pretty much eliminates all the store bought dressings. I like the garlic tomatoe dressing. It was really easy and very good. There are a lot of great receipes if you suffer from systemic yeast, although those who are very severe need to stay away from the receipes with clover honey in them.

This guide is so chock full of great information and useable recipes for the yeast free needy. More and more people are finding serious allergies to yeast, wheat, and milk, the very foods we find challenging to avoid. Lots of wonderful recipes to try also.

Good For Someone That Knows Something About Candida.......2007-01-05

Because if you DON'T know anything about Candida, you would not be able to avoid the pitfalls of the "avoid" foods that are mentioned in this book.

Proceed with caution and always listen to your own body where this book and its recipes are concerned. Not sure I would recommend it.

This book is just what I needed........2006-05-20

I've seen some bad reviews of this book, but those people must not have needed it as badly as I did. I found this book after working through my chronic yeast infection for a year.
The authors make it relatively easy to start eliminating problem foods from your diet, working your way through the process as far as needed. I happen to be one of the 'bad' cases. I can't even eat everything on the strictest level-- #4.
The recipes are 'real', things that somebody with problems could eat. Almost all the recipes are uncomplicated (only a few being detailed), many very easy, and straightforward. Many could be considered 'fast food' if you have a crockpot or can handle leftovers remade. Many recipes help you understand how much of certain fresh herbs to use, too.
This book is valuable for those who are serious about this topic. I appreciate it very much.

Good Choice For Wheat-free!.......2000-04-21

This is one of the few books that I have found for individuals with just wheat-not wheat and gluten-allergies. I suffer from wheat allergies, and it has been difficult to find recipes that don't exclued gluten as well(which makes it more difficult to find ingredients). This book is great. The only reason that I gave it 4 stars instead of five, is that I wish it had more spelt recipes!

This book kept me sane........2003-11-05

When I was told to put my autistic son on a dairy and gluten free diet 6 years ago I did not have a clue, I had never seen the point in baking a cake or a loaf of bread if you could buy it! Although we can get staples on prescription the book has made birthday cakes and treats a pleasure and surprise for all my children and the breads and pancake mixes vary his diet, the recipes are easy to adopt to dairy free if necessary.I have tried other books for variety, one used chickpea flour in everything which tasted wierd, I wonder if the recipes were tested! Others just specify a proprietory GF flour which seems pointless, and expensive if you cannot get them on prescription. Faced with the challenge of putting a family member on this diet, if you can get hold of this book it will be the only one you'll ever need, ours is reinforced with sticky tape and covered in food stains!

I never cooked for myself before, but this book told me exactly what to do. Now I'm enjoying my food again. My meals had gotten much the same, but now I'm trying all the different things and putting weight back on.

The kind of book a food chemist would create.......1999-05-21

Obscure ingredients, and odd mixtures could characterise this book. Although the recipes are definately gluten free, they are complicated. Three or four different types of flour are used in many of the recipes, and include bean flour, soya flour, cornflour, teff flour....etc. If you are used to the usual rice, tapioca and potato flours, then this book is not for you. Also, ingredients have to be weighed instead of measured, which is very time consuming. I by far preferred "Special Diet Solutions" by Carol Fenster. It is far more practical.
