JEB through the eyes of his staff..........2002-07-09
An excellent compilation of observations of various members of James Ewell Brown's staff officers. Insights of the war and of their commander give the reader a true "you are there" approach.
Trout's framing sequences offer a nice chronology, along with many helpful maps. I read this after having first read some general biographies of Genl Stuart. Well done, indeed.

insightful view of young woman's life in Civil War south.......2000-03-06
This is a compelling diary of a young woman, dedicated to her family and community, who demonstrated great maturity during an extraordinarily difficult time. It shows an interesting side of what life was like for southern woman during and after the Civil War. Pauline was a strong and intelligent woman who had the courage to confront a Union General about a wrong done to her family. It is a remarkable account which gives much insight into the life of a woman - daughter, sister, wife and mother - in the Civil War south. Despite the comment from the reader in Moscow, those who read this book know they must be content with this one, and only, account of the author's life.
This book is good.......1998-03-03
I really liked this book. It was funny and interesting. I hated it when she died, but it was still funny. I can't wiat for the sequel!

Whispers from the Grave.......1996-08-20
The Women of the Confederacy speak. Culled from journals, diaries and published memoirs of the most cruel war of all, a Civil War, these women tell of hardships endured and unbelievable savagery on both sides. If this book was fiction it would be a good read. As eyewitness accounts it is a great read. Experience the horrors, the insights, the frame-of-mind of a violent time from our past. This book will enrich you

Book Description
Confederate Letters and Diaries brings to modern readers many interesting, fascinating writings of Confederate soldiers. Colonel Swank has included numerous eyewitness, and often heart rending accounts of battlefield scenes, hardships faced in camp, on the march, or in prison-this collection even includes a diary of a Virginia cavalryman held in a Federal military prison. The words of those soldiers from Dixie bring their turbulent years strikingly alive.

Jean Berlin's Inflated Resume.......2002-03-14
I direct your attention to the back cover of this book, wherein it states that Jean V. Berlin taught history at the University of Virginia. Turns out all she was was a teaching assistant! I guess you do't have to win the Pulitzer Prize to be found out as someone who makes stuff up about themselves!
Seriosly, this sort of inflation gives writers a bad name. Let's hope it was all just a misunderstanding.
Typical ..........2000-10-27
Nothing Ms. Berlin says in her introduction allows us to escape the fact that Ada Bacot, while pretending to assert her independence and find her self-esteem, simply came to the front and did what Dorothea Dix feared women nurses would do ... find another husband. How pathetic.

Good Book for Novice Civil War Diary Readers.......2004-08-03
Avid civil war women's diary readers may want to take a pass on this book. While Ms. McKinely is definitely a fiesty southern sympathizer with a Union heritage, I didn't find this book to present anything new or that much more interesting than other southern women's diary.
What draws me to diaries is not only the historical value of the diaries but the chance to become initimately involved in the lives of these women and their families. Whether it be the editing, Ms. McKinely's writing style or the sparse details of her background, I didn't connect with Ms. McKinely. In my opinion, the best diaries are those that have left me wanting to know more, wishing that the diary hadn't ended and feeling as though I know more about the writer and the plight of civil war women then when I started. From that standpoint, the book fell short.
That being said, I would recommend the book to someone who hasn't read any or only a few diaries. Ms. McKinely's fiestiness is typical of women in the south and much of what she goes through is similar to other women across the south.
Brings to life the travails of living under Union occupation.......2001-11-13
Historian Gordon Cotton's From The Pen Of A She-Rebel: The Civil War Diary Of Emilie Riley McKinly is the fascinating and informative story of Ms. McKinly, told in her own words, as she and her rural Southern neighbors witnessed the depredations of the Civil War. What made Ms. McKinly unique was that she was a Yankee by background, yet she personally embodied deep sympathy for her Confederate neighbors. Extensively annotated vignettes bring to life the travails of living under Union occupation, and paint a vivid picture of a corner of America that was uprooted and changed forever by the surge of history. An epilogue provides as much historical closure as is available concerning Ms. McKinly and her neighbors after the war. From The Pen Of A She-Rebel is a unique and welcome addition to the growing body of Civil War literature available for readers and students today.

Book Description
Although modern authors continually produce important studies of the War Between the States, the firsthand accounts of those who were in the conflict remain the most valuable tools for understanding. This collection of letters and diaries provides glimpses into the lives of a diverse group of South Carolinians.
Among the seventeen accounts are the voices of women, including a Confederate spy; of officers like Captain Obidiah Hardin, who left his beloved Palmetto State to fight and die in Virginia before the war was even a year old; and of common men, like German immigrant Augustus Franks, whose love for his adopted state compelled him to staunchly defend the Confederacy. Collected from the archives of Winthrop University, these remarkable documents give voices and faces to the war as it affected South Carolina and her citizens.

Confederate experiences recorded in letters and diaries.......2001-03-11
Edward Lee and Ron Chepesiuk collaborate to compile Confederate experiences recorded in letters and diaries in their superbly history, South Carolina In The Civil War. Seventeen accounts provide us insights into the lives of a Confederate spy, a German immigrant, the voices of ordinary women, and common men whose love for their state led them to risk their lives and liberties in its defense during the harrowing years of the American civil war. Highly recommended for academic collections and Civil War buffs, the informative, engaging text is enhanced with photographs of many of the contributors, along with maps placing events in context.

Book Description
Compelling oral histories from many of the most interesting and important field investigators who came into their prime in the 1950's through the 1990's, describing the role of mentors and students, field courses and field experiences in determining their careers. Backgrounds, education and scientific contributions are elucidated through interviews. Presented in chronological sequence by generation and placed in the context of broader societal influences, these oral histories are used to examine how the pendulum in modern science has swung from description to theory; from generalization to specialization; from emphasis on teaching to domination by research and administrative hierarchies. Read at one level, these vignettes portray the profound sense of fun and joy of science, both as an activity and a career. At another level, the text provides a historical tale of science and scientists that is not normally told.

Women having difficulty conceiving or carrying a pregnancy to term will gain much wisdom from this book. Basing her program on the mind-body connection, author Niravi Payne has developed a therapeutic program for connecting with one's inner self to uncover the reasons behind fertility problems. In a nutshell, that means that women who can't conceive may not want to conceive in the first place. They may have other psychological barriers to conception, such as feeling that their partner isn't right for them, or ambivalence over what they see is a trade-off between motherhood and their career. "Emotions, whether conscious or unconscious, provoke physical responses," says Payne. She says that the most sophisticated fertility treatments in the world won't help women whose infertility is purely emotionally based, but for women who are using in vitro fertilization and other high-tech treatments, her program will greatly enhance the chances of conception.
(While she's helped hundreds, if not thousands, of women become pregnant, she doesn't reveal the percentage of her patients who've successfully given birth. She says that all her clients are given a new ability to heal themselves, which makes the process of adoption and other parenting alternatives--including the choice of not having children--easier to consider for those women who eventually come to terms with their infertility.)
Because the emotions that affect fertility have roots as far back as childhood, Payne's program--a "healing journey"--is very thorough and requires a great deal of self-exploration and analysis. What are your attitudes toward childbirth? How has your past molded your present? Have you fully mourned for past abortions, miscarriages, or stillbirths? How have repressed emotions contributed to your infertility symptoms or other female health problems?
While Payne's book focuses on women's fertility, she also includes information about how the mind-body program can apply to men. She also includes copious recommendations for additional reading and resources for biofeedback equipment, lists of holistic medical doctors, and addresses and phone numbers of foundations and associations for further help and support.
Customer Reviews:
A lot of theory and little substance.......2005-06-16
This book tries to establish a relationship between your frame of mind and your ability to conceive. While stress may not help your chances I do not believe that somehow something in your past blocks an egg from being fertilised just like that. No evidence is provided that this happens.
There are plenty of people with trauma and unhappy backgrounds who have had no problems in bearing children. There are also plenty of people who are well balanced, have had happy marriages and childhoods who have difficulty in conceiving.
I felt that in a subtle way this book encourages people toward self blame and encourages a mentality that you can make it happen if you really want to. This is not always the case, sometimes despite all efforts by all concerned it just doesn't happen.
In most of the client cases in the book the female solves her emotional baggage and then just gets pregnant. Get real.
I much prefer "Conquering Infertility" by Alice Domar. I feel this book is much more substantiated, more realistic in recognising that it may not happen but uses the mind body approach to manage the inevitable stress of fertility treatment.
The Whole Person Fertility Program.......2003-09-30
I whole-heartedly recommend this book and its results. In addition to reading this book I went through about two years of therapy with Niravi, which changed my life. I think the readers who interpreted what she is saying with the attitude that if you don't get pregnant by following what she suggests, that it's all in your mind, and it's your fault, have it all wrong. That is exactly the thinking that I was stuck in, and had created as a self-blame mechanism that I carried around with me all of my life. Her goal is not to have you blame yourself, but to look at your life and try to understand how and why you have come to have the beliefs that you do, which may not be your fault at all. They can be very strong family influences, work influences and society influences that keep you and your mind locked in patterns of behavior that affect how your body responds to stress, illness or disease. I believe the mind has a huge affect on your health and how well your body works, and I believe medicine is only just starting to catch on to this idea. That is the basis for Niravi's program. I finally examined how I was really living my life and whether that way was compatible with what I was saying was my goal to have a baby. My life was not compatible with having a baby before I worked with Niravi. I tried for 10 years to get pregnant. I finally forgave myself for all the mistakes and failures, but it took a long time to do. I am now 7 1/2 months pregnant, which I had not expected to happen. I give a lot of credit to Niravi for helping me stop blaming myself and to get on with my life. Hope she can help you too.
Not for everyone.......2002-02-06
I purchased this book since I haven't been able to conceive after many years of trying, and it was recommended in "Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom". I believe in the mind/body connection but there is an inherent risk in focusing on this: we feel even MORE guilty when we don't conceive since it MUST be in our minds! This book is written in a very positive, supportive tone, however.
I was turned off by the focus on older, "professional" infertile women and lesbian couples. Why not give examples of a more average type of woman? I understand that these minority groups need support and perhaps their stories exemplified what the author was trying to convey, but I just couldn't relate to them. I also have a hard time believing that the mind is to blame for all ailments. One example is a woman with "hard" eggs who became a softer person and got pregnant. Please! Perhaps unbalanced hormones are caused by an unbalanced psyche but I hesitate to blame my "family patterns" for my fibroid, polyps and blocked tubes.
I tried doing the suggested exercises but found myself yawning and procrastinating. Hopping on the wings of a butterfly...all I could think of was that the butterfly's wings were going to break and I would fall to my death in the lovely meadow below.
I would only recommend this book to women who have unexplained infertility, especially older women.
I think the other reviews are based on the free preview..........2001-10-24
I've *actually* read the entire book and it's a peice of trash, I actually threw it away it disgusted me so much. The author said that if you don't tell people you're pregnant your baby will think he/she is not wanted and you can miscarry because of that! Unbelievably ignorant, this author has obviously never dealt with miscarriage or infertility. I picked up this book thinking it would have natural remedies(you know like herbs) and it's a lot of meditations and visualizations which is fine and good for anyone trying to conceive but with infertility I don't care how many times I pray to buddah it's just not going to happen without a doctor's help. Don't waste your time on the rest of the book, it's not worth it and they wouldn't give a huge preview if it was
Mind body link.......2001-06-06
Great book with lots of providing lots of insight to all the things we carry with us from childhood and adulthood that affect the way we handle infertility. It helped me face my fears and realize how my families attitudes towards pregnancy and failure have affected me. Highly reccommend...

The Many Dimensions of Peter Reinhart on his Journey.......2003-07-12
I discovered only one of the many dimensions of this truly amazing man, Peter Reinhart, a few years ago while trying to learn to bake bread. After meeting him in his bread classes, I became a "Reinhart Groupie"---for he truly is amazing!---as is this book.
Published in 1994, he has described in vivid verbiage in this book his continuous quest for the best in all things, including but certainly not limited to food and all its components as they relate to each other and to the human body and soul.
The recipes in this book are absolutely outstanding! Peter's commentary is even more so, reflecting his unfailing faith in God, his spiritual journey, and his understanding of the communion between the joy and comfort of good food and the human spirit.
It's a good read! It's also a great cookbook with fantastic recipes you will die to try before you finish reading even one!
And if you ever have an opportunity to attend one of his classes, by all means do so---even if it's just to meet the man. You will never forget him or be quite the same again.

If you like garlic, this book is for you!.......2003-03-07
I love cookbooks. They are as exciting and gripping as novels. But, very few cookbooks are made to be read like a novel-but this one is. Before each recipe is a short essay by the author explaining the addition of or the history behind each recipe or group of recipes. Some of the stories are wildly funny, such as the author's quest for the perfect barbecue sauce...
The recipes really shine, though. The only weak part of this cookbook is the section on soup (although, the Lentil-Spinach-Chorizo Soup is one of my all-time favorite soups). Otherwise, this cookbook has definitive recipes for some popular food: the Hummus, Baba Ghanouj, and Tabbouleh. The Tuna Salad (in connection with the Tuna Grinder in the sandwich section) is stellar, as is the Coleslaw. But, the very best recipe in the book: Caesar Salad with the accompanying croutons. Once you try these recipes, you will never, ever look at other recipes for these foods! Be warned, however: Br. Peter Reinhart LOVES garlic. This is not a book for people who are squeamish about garlic!

Here is little selection of everything from soup to dessert, and between. Some caught my attention that are delicious: Lemon Walnut Muffins, Tuna Cheese Grinder,Spanish Lentil and Sausage Soup,.
Received free. Likely would not have paid for it. Interesting tales with recipes.
A unique cookbook that's fun to read as well as to cook from.......1998-05-02
Reinhart has a real storyteller's gift, as he relates stories of cooking for a tiny restaurant and bakery for his small religious order located in Forestville, in the California Sonoma wine country. Funny anecdotes introduce each recipe - the barbecue sauce story is one of the best. The recipes are easy and many are fresh twists on old favorites, including cole slaw that will make you change your mind about slaw.
Usable, yummy recipes with stories that add extra........1997-10-01
This is one of my most favorite cookbooks, with easy-to-prepare, unique recipes such as tasso sandwiches and cream of watercress soup that are fun to make and delightful to eat. Stories that accompany the recipes give an added special flavor to each one.
