Great for reading with Chinese studnets. The goddess Qin tries to steal a beautiful brocade but has difficulty when a little boy decides to fight for it. Nice little chinese story with Chinese style illustrations.

Book Description

It takes extreme measures to get a response out of the stubbornly indifferent Billy in a wry little tale that readers of all ages will surely relate to.

Billy can be very difficult to please. Show him something very tall or very small, and he'll say, "whatever." Let him play inside the bounciest castle, and he'll shrug and say, "whatever." Take him for a ride in the smokiest train or the speediest spaceship — it doesn't matter. Billy's reaction is always the same. What might the surly boy say if a hungry tiger came by and his nonchalant dad gave Billy a taste of his own medicine? William Bee's quirky illustrations give an amusing new spin to a familiar scenario that will have both children and adults laughing in recognition.

Horrible book not suitable for children - unless you are fine with children's book's that end with a tiger eating the child and the father walking away saying "Whatever". (Literally this is how the book ends - quite a shock as I was reading it as a bedtime story to my 2 yr old son).

The author must be some sick person who never got enough love as a child. The type of person that should NOT be writing children's books.

I actually can not believe this thing ever got published.

5 out of 5 stars again! again!.......2006-10-11

My 2 1/2 yr. old daughter cannot get enough of this book. Actually, it is the only book she asks for and will sit down for. Laughter every time.
I hope William Bee writes more books!!

4 out of 5 stars My son loves this unconventional book........2006-08-01

Not your typical picture book ending, my son likes to chorus "Whatever!" as we read. He thinks it's hysterical, but my daughter finds this book offensive! It makes me chuckle-- I gave it as a gift to my friend with a sense of humore.

5 out of 5 stars a classic.......2006-01-02

lovely book - very funny.
particularly for dads reading to sons.

5 out of 5 stars Subtle BRILLIANCE!!!.......2005-12-24

As with all of the very best childrens' books, this book is full of multi-layered metaphor, meaning and symbolism. The text is wonderfully unencumbered. The art is unique, imaginative and endearing. The moment I read it, I was delighted and couldn't wait to share it with my family. Mr. Bee's book is full of creativity and humor, both of which engage and delight young (and not-so-young) readers. Look a little deeper than the surface and you will be rewarded by a wonderful book by a very talented writer!

Book Description

The nursery rhymes which we attribute to a mythical Mother Goose are the anonymous poems which have survived hundreds of years because of their popularity with small children, and the ease with which they can be memorized. There is no fixed list of Mother Goose rhymes. There are many hundreds, and many variant forms. We have selected our favorites, which include almost all of those with wide appeal. We have illustrated each rhyme with favorite pictures from our huge library of nursery rhyme books. More than 70 illustrators are used, including Arthur Rackham, Lois Lenski, L.L. Brooke, Kate Greenaway, Frederick Richardson, Margaret Tarrant and E. Boyd Smith. We believe this edition is one of the most remarkable ever made from this still vital body of poetry.

Beautiful vintage illustrations that make the perfect gift for a new grandchild. I was very pleased with this book. All nursery rhymes are presented beautifully in alphabetical order. I would purchase this book again for a keepsake gift.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Edition of Mother Goose.......2004-09-29

My wife and I had been searching for a high-quality, hardback edition of Mother Goose both to read to our daughter and to treat as a keepsake, and we struggled to find something we were happy with. This edition ended our search - it is just fantastic. It has a great range of nursery rhymes - all the traditional ones and plenty of less common ones; and each nursery rhyme is accompanied by two beautiful illustrations (that come from notable illustrators from the turn of the century through the 40's and 50's). The production quality is very high for the whole book - especially the illustrations. And my daughter loves it...she asks for it every night, stares intently at the illustrations, and has started repeating the rhymes throughout the day.
The book has preserved the traditional language of the nursery rhymes as well, for better or for worse depending on what you are looking for. Some of the language is very British, and there has been no modern updating of either language or themes for any of the nursery rhymes - something that some Mother Goose books have taken on.
All in all, we have just been thrilled with this book. It has absolutely served the purpose of being fun and readable and being a special, high quality edition worthy of treating as a keepsake/special book.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic to Keep For Years.......2004-09-02

This is a truly beautiful book. The illustrations are museum like quality -- no amateur artists here. The selection of Mother Goose tales is impressive. The paper is thick stock, high grade. This is a book that you will want to keep for many years, that both children and adults will enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars It is a good book for western readers........2006-08-25

The book is useful for western readers who are interested in Taoism (Taiwan only). However, I agree with some previous comments that the sub-title "Blue Dragon White Tiger" is not necessary. By the way, we Chinese say "Green Dragon White Tiger" actually, Green means East, Trees and wood, Growing etc while White means West, Metal and Fading etc. Most Feng-shui masters use the above theory as well as Taoist priests.

If you want to know more about Taoism in academic aspects, I'd like to recommend "Daoist Identity - History, Lineage, and Ritual" edited by Livia Kohn.

5 out of 5 stars Ian Myles Slater on: Chinese Religions' Foundation Concepts.......2003-10-17

While I agree completely with the previous reviewer's enthusiasm, prospective readers should be aware that the "Taoist Rites of Passage" subtitle is slightly misleading. Although Michael Saso is best known for excellent works on Taoism in modern Taiwan (and latterly the mainland), "Blue Dragon White Tiger" is a description of the ritual life of Chinese popular religion (Confucian and Buddhist as well as Taoist), which closely relates the practices to underlying philosophical and cosmological concepts. I have found nothing at once so comprehensive and concise in English.

Taoism, which most broadly and effectively incorporates distinctly Chinese concepts, does receive the major attention. These portions of the book cover some of the same material as Saso's earlier "Taoism and the Rite of Cosmic Renewal" (1972, revised 1989) and "The Teachings of Taoist Master Chuang" (1978; corrected edition as "Taoist Master Chuang," 2000). Taoism as a living religion has been seriously studied only in the last few decades, and Saso is a leading figure in this field. He has also worked on classical Taoist texts, non-Taoist popular beliefs, and Chinese Buddhism, however, so he is not presenting his own narrow specialization as the whole of Chinese religion.

The publisher informs us that "camera-ready copy was supplied by the author," which gives the reader some confidence that the Chinese characters and the many charts, diagrams, and illustrations have been inserted at the right places. It may also account for some inconsistencies in layout, and possibly some less than sparkling passages on non-Chinese subjects.

As mentioned, Saso's reports on Chinese practices, and the beliefs associated with them by at least some Chinese, are based on solid research and personal experience. The author acknowledges the assistance of various Chinese scholars and ritual specialists, and of western Sinologists, including several of the Jesuits who had assisted his earlier fieldwork on Taiwan with Master Chuang. It is, however, fairly obvious who DIDN'T check the text for errors. In a passage comparing rituals of adult status on page 134, his references to Judaism confuse Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement -- part of a "world-renewal" ritual of a type familiar to Saso!) with the Bar Mitzvah (presenting a 13-year-old male as an adult for some important religious purposes). Not a big problem, but a sudden jolt to the reader who is aware of the difference. And a lost chance for an interesting comparison.

5 out of 5 stars Taoism from the inside out.......2001-01-12

"Blue Dragon White Tiger" is an in-depth description and explanantion of the underlying philosphies that have permeated Chinese culture from antiquity to the present day. This is not an exhaustive history, but an exploration of the major philosophies/practices that underpin Chinese society and cultural norms. Chief among these are the yin/yang concepts of the "I Ching" and the five-element (wood, fire, metal, water, earth) system of natural processes of change. My teacher Michael Saso is an initiated Taoist priest and ordained Buddhist priest, so he is able to give us a look at the various rites of passage of Chinese culture such as birth, death, marriage and the annual cycle of festivals from the inside out. He not only describes rituals as an observer, but understands the underlying energetic processes such as Taoist emptying that inform and empower the rites. This level of understanding is rare in the West, to say the least. While there are surely descriptions of these rites elsewhere, the inner meaning based on experience from practicing the Taoist alchemical inner transformation and emptying yogas eludes the most educated and astute scholar-observer. It is precisely this meaning that the author provides. He ends with an overview of the state of religion in China today. Each chapter has notes and a select bibliography, however there is no index.

            Book Description

Innocents on the Ice is based on the author's experience and writings as part of a U.S. Navysupported scientific expedition to establish Ellsworth Station on the Filchner Ice Shelf. This expedition, undertaken from November 1956 to early 1958, coincided with the International Geophysical Year (19571958) which initiated the "scientific age" in Antarctica.

Behrendt describes the stress of experiencing the dark Antarctic winter of 1957, during which intense personal conflicts arose at the most isolated of the seven U.S. Antarctic stations. The tension was unrelieved by contact with the outside world, since there was no mail for the 9 civilians and 30 Navy men living beneath the snow and only occasional radio contact was made with families for a year. The author also describes his explorations with four others of the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf system during the following summers of 19571958. Along the hazardous 1300-mile oversnow traverse in two Sno-Cats, the field party measured ice thickness and snow accumulation as part of an international effort to determine the balance of the Antarctic ice sheet, and they also made the first geological observations of the spectacular Dufek Massif in the then unexplored Pensacola Mountains. Finally, Behrendt draws upon his 40 years of continual participation in Antarctic research to explain the changes in scientific activities and environmental awareness in Antarctica today.

            Customer Reviews:

            5 out of 5 stars A historically important book.......2006-11-06

Behrendt's account of his winterover and subsequent traverse is a very interesting read, and most importantly, a very relevant contribution to the history of Antarctic science. It shows the clash between the old generation of explorers rooted in the "Heroic Age" with the younger generation of scientists, ultimately marking the beginning of the "Scientific Age" in Antarctic exploration.

5 out of 5 stars When military authority goes wrong ..........2000-10-26

The book is reasonably well-written although in a strange style: a mixture throughout of diary entries from 1957 and current commentaries. The narrative about the science and logistics is interesting enough, but the real heart of the book is the battle between the scientists and Captain Finn Ronne of the U.S. Navy. Captain Ronne, who wrote his own version of the IGY expedition at Ellsworth Station, appears to have been a completely arbitrary martinet, a self-serving dictator and political string-puller, and a bad-tempered paranoid and coward. He repeatedly put the expedition in danger by his refusal to provide equipment. He censored much of the communication in and out. He insisted that the scientists share dishwashing and other duties even when they were barely able to complete their scientific assignments. He evidently believed that the Navy support team of 30 or so men had more important things to do than assist the scientists, even though the sole purpose of the whole expedition was scientific. The sad tale of how he killed two emperor penguins 'in the most brutal way imaginable' is enough to turn one's stomach.

There are parallels, as Behrendt notes, with Captain Queeg of the Caine Mutiny. Unfortunately in the nonfictional world of the Navy, Ronne's outrageous behavior, although known to his superiors, apparently went unpunished.

The characterization of other individuals in the book is rather thin. But I would strongly recommend the book.

5 out of 5 stars What actually happened at Ellsworth Station IGY?.......1999-06-11

The title is very appropriate for Behrendt's diary of events at Ellsworth Station on the Weddell Sea margin of the Filchner Ice Shelf and their long geophysical traverse as far south as the Dufek Massif during IGY (1956-1958). The diary, that of a graduate student geophysicist and neophyte Antarctican, is made much more interesting by the running commentary from one of Antarctica's most accomplished, still active, scientists. The underlying plot describes a group of young scientists trying to cope with a system designed for the Navy and the harsh realities of exploring an unknown part of Antarctica. Many of the stories are amusing and almost unbelievable; they show the stress of wintering over and working in harsh conditions. I am amazed at how much was accomplished by Behrendt and other pioneers in the IGY program who worked with the relatively primitive equipment of the time. We need to hear more of their stories!

4 out of 5 stars An interesting read on several levels.......1999-03-14

Behrendt's book is an interesting and rewarding read on several levels. At the core of the book are the extremely complete field notes of a 20-something scientist-adventurer on an exploratory journey into an unmapped part of Antarctica during the 1957 International Geophysical Year. Interspersed with this narrative are the reflections of the same man from a vantage point 40 years in the future. Part history, part science, part an examination of expedition psychology, this book will be of interest to a wide audience.

Time does not heal all wounds, warns grief counselor Donna Schuurman in her brave and practical book about the challenges adults face in coming to terms with the loss of a parent before age 18. Her premise in Never the Same defies the common wisdom. "Forget the stages of grief. There is no magical moment when you can say, it's over." Using thoughtful self-assessments and examples, Schuurman persuades readers that grief must be reprocessed at every stage of life. First, she invites readers to look backward, examining their reactions and coping strategies at the time of their parent's death. Moving into the present, she asks, what meaning do your make of your parent's death as an adult? Schuurman details the high cost of unresolved grieving, including depression, anxiety, pessimism, underachievement, and troubled relationships. She then outlines suggestions for dealing with the legacy of a parent's death and choosing healthy traditions for remembering. Adults and parents will find this a wise and compassionate book—-an indispensable guide to the unfinished business of losing a parent at an early age. --Barbara Mackoff

              Book Description

Few people are ever the same after the death of a parent. This especially holds true for children whose entire worlds are turned upside down by the loss and whose questions are left unanswered and feelings silenced. As a result, they may carry their anger, guilt, or loneliness with them into adulthood and if left unre-solved, these feelings can negatively influence every aspect of their life. In Never the Same, Donna Schuurman helps those who have lost a parent as a child reflect on their unique experience, understand its impact, and learn how to heal. The only book of its kind, Never the Same is an essential resource for those who have either survived this experience themselves or know someone who has.

As an adult who lost a parent during my childhood and as a professional who has worked with grieving children for more than 18 years, I was looking forward to reading this book with the hope that it would be an invaluable resource. Unfortunately, although easy to read, I was disappointed. There are better books out there. I recommend anything by Alan Wolfelt and also recommend Never Too Young To Know by Phyllis Silverman. If a child has a seriously or terminally ill parent, I highly recommend Wendy Harpham's books. If you are an adult who lost a parent during your childhood, take a look at The Loss That Is Forever by Maxine Harris or Hope Edelman's classic, Motherless Daughters.

              5 out of 5 stars A "Keeper!".......2006-04-21

This practical, sensible guide has a permanent place on my bookshelf. Like a stone thrown in a pond, the death of parent will impact a child or teen forever. Anything to ease this process is a gem.

              5 out of 5 stars Wow, What a Gem!.......2003-04-19

Never The Same is a book that weaves a straight talking, light-hearted tone with accurate academic information. My father died when I was eleven and through my subsequent studies, I can see the relevancy of its contents.

Dr. Schuurman uses her experience and anecdotes from children and families at the Dougy Center to aid the reader in understanding the bereavement issues discussed.

I have shared this book with adults who attend our Center. Overwhelmingly they agree that reading Never the Same sheds light on their childhood history and provides insight into the current (and possibly future) experiences of their bereaved children.

One of the best things Shuurman has done is to include questionnaires triggering memories that provide insights. This book is easy to read and written with a hopeful tone.

5 out of 5 stars The First Book of Its Kind.......2003-04-19

If you, or anyone you know, had a parent die in childhood, drop everything and read this book. Dr. Schuurman's wisdom, humor, and conventional style engages the reader with thought-provoking insight and practical suggestions. This is not 'just another' self-help book: it could, quite literally, change lives.

Never the Same gives information for adults about their experiences with a parent's death during childhood that clarifies, for many, the issues carried into adulthood. Specifically this book addresses intrapersonal and interpersonal issues stemming from the death of a parent.

Reading this book not only gives hope for those investigating the impact of a parent's death but also gives specific recommendations about what can be done now in an adult's life.

Those to whom I've recommended this book have joyously thanked me for giving them an easy to read personal inventory. Dr. Schuurman has intersperced Never the Same with activities and inventories designed to integrate the past with the present.

It is the first book of its kind that I've seen. Buy it now and you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Turn Off The TV and Read This Book!.......2003-04-09

I avoided the television Sunday evening and sat down with a book. I spent my time well! I chose Donna Schuurman's new book, Never The Same - Coming To Terms With The Death Of A Parent (from St. Martin's Press, New York, 2003).

Adults who have experienced the death of a parent during childhood must read Never The Same. Family members, friends, and support professionals who wish to better understand the impact that parental loss has on children throughout their life should also read Donna's book. This book blends scholarly and anecdotal research with the compassionate exploration of some of the roots of thoughts and feelings experienced by adults who mourn the death of a parent during their early years.

Schuurman offers more than a simple list of "here's how you may be affected by the parental death in your past." While reading Donna's book, I felt the two of us were sitting down in a one-on-one relationship, with Donna exploring, coaching, and guiding me along the path of grief.

Never The Same reads like a storybook, a textbook, a workbook, and a guidebook -- all in one. The dust cover of the book contains this statement: Although we can't relive childhood, we can choose to live healthier, fuller lives. From opportunities for introspection to the practical suggestions for dealing with childhood loss, Donna Schuurman's book provides tools for healing and moves the reader toward a healthier, fuller life!

Rabbi Marks explains how the Jews, spreading to all corners of the world beginning with the Diaspora, adapted their recipes to local ingredients and adopted the local fare, often giving it new twists. A historian and a chef, he provides a clear explanation of what makes a dish Jewish and why so many Americans associate Jewish cooking with Eastern European food. You don't have to be Jewish to enjoy the more than 500 recipes Marks includes. A wealth of historical and culinary information, as well as photos and drawings, accompany the recipes.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful cookbook and cultural lesson!.......2003-01-27

This is absolutely my favorite cookbook. The recipes are simple and delicious and the variations that are included offer even more ways to prepare the same dish. Everything that I have tried from this cookbook has turned out so good and have resulted in some of our favorite dishes.
Rabbi Marks also includes information about spices and vegetables and Jewish culture making the cookbook a fascinating read as well (I actually read the whole cookbook before I even tried any of the recipes!).
It is well worth the money!

5 out of 5 stars The recipes work........2002-02-05

This is one of those rare and wonderful cookbooks in which everything you make turns out the way you hoped it would. I've made many, if not most, of the recipes in this book, with no disasters, and without my usual fiddlings and substitutions--the recipes are great the way they are. Some of them are the basic Jewish fare--honey cake and potato kugel--and some of them are more exotic Sephardi recipes. They're all delicious. It's also a good read, but primarily I like it because I can pull it out for every Shabbos and find things to make that I know will come out.

4 out of 5 stars Superb book on Jewish food - history, symbolism and recipes.......2001-09-05

If you're looking for a glossy coffee-table book with lots of stylish photographs, this is not for you. That said, it is an attractive book, well laid-out, printed in two colours and illustrated with old engravings and photographs. The illustrations are of people and markets rather than the dishes themselves, which underscore the book's focus on the origins of the dishes and the people who made them.

Marks does a great job of explaining why Jewish food is so diverse and how the Jews adapted their recipes to local ingredients, and also adapted the local recipes to the laws of kashrut. He includes recipes from India, Poland and Morocco, and everywhere in between. For many recipes he includes an anecdote or a little bit of history, which bring the dishes to life.

One of the things this book brought home to me was how important food is in Judaism: everything has a symbolic meaning and you don't eat things just because they taste good, but also because they represent something. At Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, apples dipped in honey represent hopes for a sweet coming year, while the challah (bread) is shaped into a round loaf (instead of being braided as usual) to symbolise the cyclical nature of time. Matzo is eaten at Pesach because when the Jews fled Egypt, they did not have time for their bread dough to rise. Thus at every festival meal the participants are reminded of the meanings of the festival and why it is celebrated.

The recipes themselves are clearly laid out and look easy to follow, although I haven't tried any of them yet. I didn't notice any impossible-to-find ingredients and the techniques are mostly within the average cook's capabilities.

The only thing missing in this book (and the reason it got 4 instead of 5 stars) is a more comprehensive section on each festival with a description, which foods are traditionally served, and some sample menus. As it is, if you want to create a Rosh Hashana meal you have to look up the individual recipes in the index. Otherwise a lovely book and well worth the money!

This book is a great compendium of Jewish recipes from around the world. Just as informative is the history of Jewish cuisine, and food in general! You not only get the recipe for the dish, but the history of it as well
