Book Description

Voices From the Rear should be recognizable to many Vietnam Veterans. It deals with the inequalities of the draft system of the 1960s and provides a social history of the U.S. Army during 1969-1970. It is a story of rear echelon soldiers in Vietnam, who comprised the majority of troops that served in that war, often harboring festering animosities towards the war and the Army. They often maneuvered craftily to cope with the situation and created a culture and shared comradeship that helped them survive and endure the Army.

"This story will ring bells with most Vietnam veterans who served in a non-combat capacity." Walter J. Boyne

"This is an extraordinary memoir in several ways but most particularly because it chronicles the experiences of a college educated draftee through his year in Vietnam with an elite combat unit." Dan Cragg

"If you have ever served in the Army, even in peacetime, George Watson's Voices From the Rear, will bring back memories. If you have never worn the uniform, you will nevertheless enjoy this glimpse of mind-numbing routine, punctuated by terrifying moments, and the attempts of soldiers to escape the boredom and cope with the terror." Bernard C. Nalty

1 out of 5 stars A weak voice.......2003-03-24

I served in the same unit as the author at about the same time and find his recollections to be widely off the mark. Readers will get a distorted view of the 101st Airborne Division from this book.

It seems as if the author had tried to avoid military service and had a bad experience when he finally got into uniform. He should be grateful that he was selected for a job in the rear rather than being assigned to the engineer battalion, where he would have faced real danger. I lost several friends who were in the 101st at the same time. This book is an insult to their memory.

5 out of 5 stars A differing viewpoint on "Voices from the Rear".......2002-10-01

Having served during the Viet Nam conflict, but not in the combat theater, I was gratified to read the honest reactions and share, vicariously, experiences of someone who was there. I enjoyed the book, for all its gritty candor and blunt expression make it a valuable memoir, an unvarnished look at war as it is, not as some think it should be. I strongly recommend Voices from the Rear to readers who appreciate a vigorous examination of reality. However, I would suggest some points a recent Minneapolis reviewer may wish to reconsider.

The Minneapolis reviewer seems to vilify the author for once having been a young man, presenting that viewpoint. In what way is that a problem? Is that not the method of memoirs, reconsideration of the past? How else can lessons and examples of history be assessed?

One has to ask what are the Minneapolitan reviewer's qualifications? Is the critic an historian by training, or an historically inclined dilettante? A veteran of a unit which served in Viet Nam? A disaffected writer with a penchant for writing acerbic reviews? A recently minted Ph. D. candidate, eager to demonstrate his emergence into the field? There was no personal identification or relevant organizational affiliation (if applicable) appended; henceforward in this piece, that reviewer will be designated MR for "Minneapolis Reviewer".

Memory, photographs, and letters have always been considered valid sources, whatever their inherent biases. Many excellent and credible memoirs and histories have been written with various combinations of these sources. It is the writer's choice to incorporate these in his work, and it remains for the intelligent reader to consider their possible biases. One might rightly expect personal bias in a memoir; without such a slant, the memoir would hardly be personal. The long odds suggest that no work is entirely without some bias of viewpoint or suspicion of source. That has to be accepted in the writing arena. If the memoir writer is castigated for injecting bias, dependent on personal sources, into a memoir, what, then, would be the ultimate value of a bias-free, viewpoint-absent memoir? How else could one know an author's perceptions or opinions?

MR next mentions "three major flaws" in the Watson memoir, then proceeds to enumerate six "major flaws", as he defines them. Since MR seems dedicated to punctilious accuracy in taking Watson to the woodshed for presumed "errors of fact", MR should be no less scrupulous in enunciating precisely just how many flaws he does indeed perceive when crafting a review.

Wars are seldom tidy, as veterans of such contests will attest and as the history of warfare underscores. The best-laid campaign plans more often than not go astray, evidenced by debacles such as the charge of the Light Brigade and the Battle of the Somme. So, too, events proceed in the writing and editing world. Watson, like other competent historians, should rightly be credited with knowing that no manuscript is ever totally error-free, and wishing that he could have had just one more proofreading or editorial iteration before packing things off to the publisher. However, dread realities do creep into this business (as well as into waging war), and not every written product necessarily emerges from the publisher as a simon-pure bound copy, free of sinful editorial errors (mortal or venial).

Profanity, swearing, obscenity, execration exist in the real world, especially in the military. War invites freer oral expression, there being a suspension of most other moral, social, or cultural constraints, a natural concomitant in war. Did MR imagine some chivalric code existed in Vietnam forbidding untrammeled oral expression? Most informed readers would have grave doubts about the authenticity of books purporting to portray authentic soldierly dialogue if all profanity were expunged. Carping about obscenity misses the point of what is said versus how it is said. One should at least assume that Watson had sufficient integrity to report and to transcribe honestly what he heard. How could he do else, surrounded daily with war's argot? Watson shouldn't be condemned for having a good ear for warriors' dialogue; however reprehensible it may be thought to be, such talk occurred consistently in Viet Nam,and in countless past wars, and it likely will in future.

Whether the book's tone is whiny is debatable. Much writing about military life, especially memoirs and war fiction, has established firmly that whining, bitching, and grumbling are part and parcel of the soldiers' life, as inextricably linked with the warrior ethos as obscenity. No amount of yearning for a sanitized, politically correct martial environment is ever likely to reverse that trend.

The reviewer also writes that "Joseph Heller is able to take a much more dire situation, and less fair, and write a brilliant story. " Presumably the reviewer refers to Heller's Catch-22, a fictional piece based on Heller's experiences during World War Two. As accuracy and attention to detail are at the core of many of MR's complaints, it is only fair to note that his review might more accurately reflect this same correctitude, through appropriate choice of the past tense, as Mr. Heller passed away December 12, 1999.

Whether the title, Voices from the Rear, was an unintended double entendre will likely never be known, the richness of English vocabulary and its potential for elected or accidental synonymy being what it is; moreover, what point is served by determining if double entendre occurred, except perhaps to demonstrate a rather picayune finesse on the part of the reviewer?

As Voices from the Rear is a memoir, which the author forthrightly stated, and not a history, then MR should accept this and not insist on reviewing the book as a history and excoriating it for its shortcomings as a history.

The writer of this review, Dan W., is a librarian and a military history buff who lives in Olney, MD.

1 out of 5 stars Too many flaws.......2002-08-05

Historians tend to see events from the perspective of kings and generals. George Watson, in Voices from the Rear, looks at a two-year period during the Vietnam War from the perspective of one young man drafted into the United States Army from an academic career, trained as a combat engineer, sent to Vietnam in the summer of 1969, and assigned to a personnel job in the rear echelon. That young man is the author himself, and therein lies the problem with this book.

There are three major flaws in the book, and they appear to derive from the author's sources: his memories, his collection of photographs, and his letters to his fiancée. As a historian, Watson should have some more evident skepticism regarding his sources. Memory is a particularly unreliable source of historical evidence; critical incidents may deepen one's emotions, but they may also distort objective reality. Photographs, while adding some interesting visual background information, add little relevant evidence to the story. And the letters, if they are anything like the text of the book, are likely filled with accounts of incidents filtered through the emotional screen of an angry and frustrated young man conscious of and sensitive to the unfairness of his situation.

The first major flaw in Voices from the Rear is its clear errors of fact, which are simply too numerous for one who has earned a Ph.D. in history. Many of these errors could have been avoided with somewhat more diligent research. A few examples:
(1) Headquarters, 101st Airborne Division (Airmobile) was not located at Camp Evans, as Watson notes in several places, but at Camp Eagle. Camp Evans, some distance north of Camp Eagle, was the home of the Division's 1st Brigade.
(2) General George S. Patton did not carry "pearl revolvers," as Watson notes. Indeed, this myth has been so often addressed in authoritative histories that it should not need repeating. Patton carried a Colt .45 with ivory handles (and sometimes a Smith & Wesson .357 Magnum).
(3) Headquarters, Military Assistance Command, was located in Saigon, not at Long Binh, as Watson writes. (The book variously places MACV in Long Binh and "Long Bien."
(4) Omission of the 3d Brigade, 82d Airborne Division, from the "other American units in the Quang Tri-Phu Bai area" will surprise and disappoint readers who served in that distinguished organization.
(5) The notion that a married soldier loses his housing allowance when his wife lives with a parent is a piece of pure fiction.
Some errors, some more obvious than others, mar the telling of the story for one who recognizes them, but they may not be readily apparent to the casual reader. At least one comment, however, bears some scrutiny: "The blacks were not being exploited any more than the whites were." One wonders if any reasonably well informed and fair-minded person can agree with such a judgment.

The second major flaw of the book is its prodigious and largely gratuitous use of obscenities. This characteristic of the book precludes its use in a class trying to understand the Vietnam experience from the point-of-view of a rear-echelon soldier. A sophisticated reader might expect some swearing, given that such language is commonly heard in barracks around the world, but the quantity of it in the book gives the impression of poor writing. One may find other examples of poor writing in the book, but they may be excused as mistakes that got past the editor or proofreader. For example, "Nancy was quite nauseous...," a gratuitous insult to someone who appears to be a hero of the story; and one may wonder how the author, in commentary rather than in quoting barracks talk, could write, "The gooks had moved ..."; this may be an editing problem or a choice by the author. The obscenities clearly reflect the choices of the author.

The third major flaw in this book is its tone. We do not hear "voices" from the rear; we hear one voice, the author's, and it grows tedious with its whining. The author notes at the end, and in passing, that the book is a memoir (presumably, rather than a history). Still, the reader can only stand so much whining and self-pity. Millions of young men have been conscripted into armies all over the world and throughout all historical time. Some barracks griping may be expected, but this book is simply too whiney. Joseph Heller is able to take a much more dire situation, and less fair, and write a brilliant story. Voices from the Rear (which itself may be an unintended double entendre) deals with a similar set of emotions, but it simply grows tedious long before the end of its 316th page.

In summary, Voices from the Rear appears more like a Mommie Dearest "get-even" book than a wartime memoir. I cannot recommend it.

Book Description

At a time when women could not vote and very few were involved in the world outside the home, Annie Montague Alexander (1867-1950) was an intrepid explorer, amateur naturalist, skilled markswoman, philanthropist, farmer, and founder and patron of two natural history museums at the University of California, Berkeley. Barbara R. Stein presents a luminous portrait of this remarkable woman, a pioneer who helped shape the world of science in California, yet whose name has been little known until now.
Alexander's father founded a Hawaiian sugar empire, and his great wealth afforded his adventurous daughter the opportunity to pursue her many interests. Stein portrays Alexander as a complex, intelligent, woman who--despite her frail appearance--was determined to achieve something with her life. Along with Louise Kellogg, her partner of forty years, Alexander collected thousands of animal, plant, and fossil specimens throughout western North America. Their collections serve as an invaluable record of the flora and fauna that were beginning to disappear as the West succumbed to spiraling population growth, urbanization, and agricultural development. Today at least seventeen taxa are named for Alexander, and several others honor Kellogg, who continued to make field trips after Alexander's death.
Alexander's dealings with scientists and her encouragement--and funding--of women to do field research earned her much admiration, even from those with whom she clashed. Stein's extensive use of archival material, including excerpts from correspondence and diaries, allows us to see Annie Alexander as a keen observer of human nature who loved women and believed in their capabilities. Her legacy endures in the fields of zoology and paleontology and also in the lives of women who seek to follow their own star to the fullest degree possible.

4 out of 5 stars Inspirational Biography about Naturalist.......2005-05-02

I was unaware of Alexander until I encountered this book at the Smithsonian's gift shop. It is a well-written biography of an important figure in biology. Alexander was not merely the patron of two natural history museums at U.Cal Berkeley, she and her partner collected thousands of animal, plant, and fossil specimens for it over the course of decades.

Worth reading for a portrait of turn-of-the-century collecting, science, and the role of an extraordinary woman at that time.

The text does meander a bit at times in the time periods discussed in each chapter and it could use a few more maps, but it is otherwise well researched and well-written.

    1 out of 5 stars A reader.......2007-02-24

I couldn't get past a glaring mistake in Chapter 1 - specifically the author's explanation of Step 4 in 12- step programs. Step 4 DOES require "a fearless and searching" moral inventory of yourself. It DOES NOT, however, ask for a list of "those persons you think you may have hurt . . ." as a result of your addiction. That is Step 8. How could the editors have missed this?

    1 out of 5 stars Revictimization.......2003-11-11

I have only read portions of this book... and what I've read of it exemplifies a punitive and callous approach to working with trauma survivors. Making an analogy to Frankenstein for a trauma survivor experiencing intimacy/relational difficulties serves to revictimize trauma survivors. Also, I think this book is quite reductionistic... and frankly serves to categorize trauma survivors' diverse relational transactions as "trauma reactions." This unfortunately can be fuel for partners who read this book to label any and all of a trauma survivor's thoughts, opinions, and feelings (especially if slightly intense) to be "trauma reactions." Then, the partner can in essence blame the abuse-surviving parter for relationship difficulties which may have absolutely nothing to do with the trauma. This book can be quite damaging in its simplicity.

1 out of 5 stars Sorry I bought this book.......2003-08-07

This book misses the mark. I am a survivor of trauma with years of recovery behind me. This book takes a tough love approach, constantly reminding the reader of his/her limitations and can't say enough about how those limitations may never be healed to his/her desire. The correlation of survivors to Frankenstein's monster is a pity. I get the analogy, but couldn't the author come up with something other than the truely heinous? I would rather recommend "Legacy of the Heart" by Wayne Miller--a much gentler and realistic approach to healing trust.

5 out of 5 stars Trust After Trauma.......2001-07-11

I have read this book three times over the last year. Each time gave me new insights into healing the pain of chilhood sexual abuse. The author knows what she is talking about. I found the book very painful to work through, but worth the effort toward healing. My partner found it enlightening. Now he knows some of the issuses I am dealing with.

5 out of 5 stars This book is simply outstanding.......1999-11-06

This book is wonderful. It provides information so that trauma survivors understand their emotions, and behavior, it also offers insight for loved ones and partners of trauma survivors. I recommend it and have recommended it to many people. I can only thank the author for her work!

    5 out of 5 stars Wedding Present.......2007-06-09

I've given this book a couple of times as a wedding present, it is awesome and thoughtful.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Newlyweds.......2007-05-21

This is a really cute book. It would make a great gift for a wedding shower. The pictures are fun and the chapters are very informative. I will be buying more as gifts!

5 out of 5 stars Delicious all the way through.......2006-06-27

I have had success with the recipes I've tried from this book, so it already wins a thumbs up. But it's the writing that I really have to rave about--in fact, I found myself abandoning whatever novels I was reading at the time and curling up in bed with this book to read instead! It is such a wonderful conversation from someone else who is new to marriage, and her charts, tidbits, and cheese play are amusing and helpful. My husband has taken her suggestions on salt and made them law in our house.

On a practical level, this book is well put together. It does not overwhelm you with recipes but instead gives you one wonderful new meal to try each month, plus some other must-have recipes, all with the goal of getting you to sit across the table from your spouse. I also liked the book because the author is young, busy, and crammed into a city-style apartment with all its limitations. It addressed many real-life challenges I face in my own life and kitchen, making it more relevant than Betty Crocker.

Everyone we love who gets married this summer is getting this book as a gift from us.

5 out of 5 stars Delighted, Charmed and Inspired Newlywed.......2005-06-05

I received Not On Love Alone: A Year of Delicious Dinners and More for Newlyweds, by Jessie Carry Saunders, as a gift from my mother-in-law and I absolutely adored it! In fact, upon finishing it, I went out and purchased another one as a birthday gift for a friend. I read it like a novel: while the food narratives and recipes are meticulously detailed and delicious-sounding in every way, equally enjoyable are the charming anecdotes about the author's husband (JS), father (Pops), family vacations, and dinner parties, as well as the whimsical illustrations, done, I understand, by the author herself. As a newlywed myself and a culinary novice, I feel inspired by Jessie to tackle and conquer my own kitchen! I'm particularly looking forward to making her chicken noodle soup and her peach bellinis, and as my experience grows, I may even feel confident to tackle her recipe for doughnut bites with chocolate ganache filling! This book is a great read as both a cookbook and a piece of art: I promise you that you will be absolutely charmed and delighted by it, as was I!

5 out of 5 stars A Must for Every Home Cook.......2005-05-28

I loved this book! Jessie Carry Saunders's writing and recipes combine the elegant authority of Elizabeth David with the infectious enthusiam of Rachel Ray. It's clear she knows and loves her subject.

Of the recipes I've tried so far, I particulary recommend Roasted Poratoes with Shallots and Toasted Walnuts, Green Bean and Hazelnut Salad, Roasted Asparaugs, Fried Chicken, Sort of (sounds weird but it works), Lemon Ginger Tart and Wrong Way Torte. Perhaps Saunders timed the release of the book to coincide with the strawberries that go in the torte.

Saunders's drawings are evocative and inspiring. I can't believe she did them as well as wrote the book. How talented can one young woman get?

JS (her husband, to whom the book is dedicated) must be one lucky guy. Her family sounds kind of kooky, but very close-knit and loving.

I'm really looking forward to this writer's next book(s).

4 out of 5 stars Usually great, sometimes needs some help.......2007-03-19

I bought this book as a gift for a girlfriend getting married because I loved my copy so much! This is a great book for any newlywed - new to the kitchen or seasoned cooks. Lots of great ideas & recipes in here for everyday and for special occasions. I have found some of the recipes when followed exactly to be "missing something" in taste. My husband and I have experimented and made some the recipes "our own" for this reason. Overall a great book.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Bridal Shower Gift!.......2006-01-30

This book is great for newlyweds. It has sections for holiday meals, and romantic cooking for 2 meals. Most meals are made to serve 2 people. There are sections about entertaining, hosting a Thanksgiving meal, etc. Great for a couple who are new to living together and are learning how to cook for two. Full color pages. I gave this book as a bridal shower gift to my friend, along with Betty Crocker's Cookbook - Bridal Edition.

4 out of 5 stars For a more intimate present, you may want to try . . . .......2005-05-18

I am an avid, but amateur chef and am getting married in Fall 05. I've looked at a number of bride-groom cookbooks. So far, my favorite is NOT ON LOVE ALONE by Jessie Carry Saunders. It has a friendlier, more intimate tone than any of the others -- it feels like something written by a bride for other brides.

It has a friendly, appealing feel, like the author is in the kitchen with you, telling you stories about the recipes as she teaches you how to make them. Also, it's just a higher quality book -- it's a hard cover, the pages are nice and thick, and the watercolor illustrations on every page make the book seem like something you could display on your coffee table as easily as you could use it in the kitchen.

If you want a good cookbook, any of the various newlywed cookbooks will work fine. If you want an excellent present for a wedding or a bridal shower, my recommendation is NOT ON LOVE ALONE.

4 out of 5 stars Where's The simplicity for "New"lyweds?.......2004-02-06

Although this book has some great ideas, I don't find it very helpful for newlyweds just beginning on the journey to a new life, whom may need some simple recipes for starting out. These can be complicated at times. The name and a few recipes referring to candlelight meals you may wish to take time to do is about the only thing that puts this book into the gift category if anyone is looking for that special cookbook to give to Newlyweds. I also recommend "Honeymooner's Cookbook" and it's a more practical approach for newlyweds because the recipes are quite simple yet some very elegant to serve by candlelight. Also it has special features such as a cute recipe pocket & tabbed dividers that are simply pretty, tons of tips too on the back of each one to make things a little easier around the kitchen and whole house. With a nice custom designed cover, even a Wedding bouquet on the back cover, I would suggest it along with this cookbook or by itself.

2 out of 5 stars I was expecting more tips and tricks.......2003-07-26

From the blurb on Amazon, I was expecting more tips, tricks and handholding from this book. Basically it's just recipes with a glossary in the back of cooking terms and herbs and spices.

There are some entertaining tips but I would go to [online store] for a book like that. Not exactly what I expected when this book arrived. Also, I'd like to have nutritional information because we like to plan our meals to be moderately healthy.

2 out of 5 stars Strange, Fishy, Very Gourmet.......2007-07-14

Recipes such as "tomato salad with anchovy vinaigrette", salade nicoise, duck breasts with peppercorns, mussels with fennel, tomatoes, garlic, & saffron, smoked salmon & scrambled duck eggs with caviar"...

Now I like the more gourmet foods...but this is over the top gourmet. The only reason I didn't give it 1 star as opposed to 2 is the fact that there are a handful of decent recipes such as "lemon spice chicken" and "braised pork chops with tomato, orange, & chile"...which are about the only two.

5 out of 5 stars A comprehensive, important recipe guide to the major events a newlywed couple can anticipate in their first year together.......2006-05-23

Marriage often brings with it additional or new cooking demands, which can be a pleasure or a pain depending on how much cooking experience has been had before the event. The newly joined couple at last has a cookbook which encourages cooking for two in THE NEWLYWEDS' COOKBOOK, which opens from an introductory chapters on kitchen basics - necessary pots and pans to tableware, which can also be part of a bridal registry - to recipes for snacks, quick meals, family gatherings and special occasions alike. The focus on elegance and ease of preparation makes NEWLYWEDS' COOKBOOK a winner!
