A Traitor.......2007-06-01
How could a Marine (North) even consider selling weapons to a nation (Iran) that financed the suicide attack (carried out by Hezbollah) that murdered over 140 of his fellow Marines in Beruit in '83? It boggles the mind. He is a traitor who should have been sent to Leavenworth, along with all of the morally challanged officers and politicians above him.
Ally of fascism and terrorism.......2005-12-11
The main issue, unacknowledged in North's disgusting, self-justifying book and unmentioned in most of these reviews, is not whether North was acting 'illegally' or without Reagan's consent - it's the fact that he was involved in siphoning money to fascist death squads so that they could overthrow a democratic government. The Contras murdered, mutilated, tortured and raped civilians; 30,000 people lost their lives in the civil war between the Contras and the government. The victims of the Contra attacks were not 'evil Communists', but priests, teachers, nurses and schoolchildren.
The Sandinista government itself was not, as another reviewer claimed, a Soviet stooge, but a non-aligned, Leftist government who favoured a mixed economy, human rights and democracy. The Sandinistas introduced free healthcare and education, land reform and fair elections; they started a massive literacy campaign and abolished the death penalty. The Sandinistas' only serious human rights violation, their treatment of the indigenous Miskito population, was acknowledged as such after pressure from human rights groups, and the Sandinistas ultimately granted the Miskito full autonomy. This is in marked contrast to the US's refusal to even acknowledge, let alone attempt to rectify, its many abuses...
Many of the Contra fighters were loyalists of the previous Somoza regime, a vicious military dictatorship that the US had supported for years. All of the guff about restoring 'democracy' to Nicaragua was either a lie or a gross misunderstanding of reality; it would have been more accurate to talk about restoring fascism. The freedom-loving US appears often to get these two political systems mixed up, given that they also funded, armed and trained barbarous military juntas in Guatemala, Chile, Brazil, Argentina and El Salvador, a country where 70,000 people were killed.
So the issue is not the 'illegality', by US terms, of North's actions. The shocking reality is that North was only carrying out standard US foreign policy. The crimes here are not those of a lone individual, but of an entire administration. After all, in the early 1980s, the World Court indicted the US for conducting a campaign of state terrorism against Nicaragua.
This said, North's role in the funding of the Contras makes him, by any rational standards, a war criminal, an abetter of terrorism, an accomplice in mass murder. That's the real story here.
colonel makes more hits than a nicaraguan death squad.......2005-09-26
colonel north does it again by giving the reader a searing and fascinating look into his life all while importing enough cocaine into america to finance a large village in columbia, what a busy guy!!!. The only thing that disapointed me was the colonel's lack of detail's regarding the time he spent destroying incriminating documents after former head of c.i.a william casey gave him the heads up to get rid of the documents, nice work ollie!!!......
Almost bought it........2005-06-01
I almost bought this book but then read the 9/11 report and was reminded that Mr. North broke the law, was indicted, and then was pardoned because of a technicality;and now for some reason, there are those trying to make a hero out of him....he's taken advantage of his ill begotten fame and has made himself a millionaire...Fox news loves him....I then decided not to contribute to his coffers....
Under Fire : An American Hero.......2004-03-28
This book is a very well written account of Oliver North's life. It details the Iran-Contra situation, his time at Annapolis Naval Academy, his time serving in Vietnam, and among oother things his family life which gives us some personal information about Ollie.
From the time I picked up this book I couldn't put it down for more than the time it took to rest my eyes. This book is very interesting from start to finish and gives you a great look inside the life of a true American Hero.

Book Description
It is almost impossible to capture, in a single word, the enormous impact Dustoff had on the Vietnam War. However, John Cook has done it in a most compelling, sensititve manner. Here, for the first time, is one of the most incredible stories produced by Vietnam. This is the story of the men who risked everything to fly their evacuation helicopters into the teeth of the most intense fighting the war produced to achieve a single goal Ð evacuate the wounded. And that is what they did, day after day, night after night, under every condition imaginable. They flew through enemy fire, cloud banks, monsoons, fog, and darkness to reach the wounded. When it was all over, the men of Dustoff had performed an unbelievable feat Ð hundreds of thousands of wounded had been snatched from the battlefield. After exhaustive research and countless interviews, John Cook has skillfully woven all the threads of this epic story into a seamless fabric of dedication, sacrifice and courage. While it reads with the smoothness and consistency of a first-rate novel, there is no fiction here. The Dustoff crews are real, these events happened and Cook provides the absolutely critical human dimension that makes this story come alive. John Cook is also the author of The Advisor: The Phoenix Program in Vietnam (available from Schiffer Publishing Ltd.)., over 100 b/w photographs, 6" x 9"

A shinning, positive example of what went right in Vietnam........2002-10-12
As the son a Major Charles Kelly, I am gratified that there is a least one mainstream book that tells the story of the Dustoff pilots. It is sad that their story does not have the widespread recongition it deserves. I have access to hundreds of personal documents and have spoken with many of the men that flew with my father and as far as I can tell this book is very, very authentic and relies on fact not fiction as some articles have done. Not only that, but it is very well written and written from the heart. Thank you John Cook from the entire Kelly family......
EXCELLENT HISTORY OF DUSTOFF IN VIETNAM.......2001-09-01
I've read Rescue Under Fire several times and heartily recommend it as an overview of the history of Dustoff (aeromedical evacuation) in Vietnam. I served two tours as a Dustoff pilot and the book contained a great deal of historical information that I had never known and wouldn't have ever learned without John Cook's well researched book. I've given copies of the book to my father and both of my sons so that they can better understand what I did in Vietnam. Perhaps even more incredible than the missions under fire, which were performed over and over on a daily basis, is the effort that the early Dustoff pilots and commanders had to go through just to provide the kind of support that eventually became the standard by which present aeromedical evacuation procedures are measured. Far too frequently the egos of high level commanders stood in the way of dedicated Dustoff crews simply trying to do their job and to get the equipment and support necessary to do so. Two Dustoff pilots were awarded the Medal of Honor, but that doesn't even begin to recognize the job that was done by each and every Dustoff crew. I'm proud to have been a part of it and I thank John Cook for telling our story so eloquently.
Recommendations Matter.......2001-03-31
Do recommendations matter? You bet. After reading what the two pilots said below, the way I figured it was, they had to know what they were talking about. So, I read Rescue Under Fire. Once I started, I could not put it down. John Cook made the Vietnam war make sense, something no one else had ever done for me. He tells one hell of a story and he does not let up. He takes the reader on a fantastic ride and, at the end, you wind up staring out the window for a long time. One word of caution--if you are not willing to deal with what Cook has to say, don't read this book. If you are a bleeding heart liberal, he will shatter all your myths and leave you in a bloody heap. However, if you can deal with the truth of what Vietnam was all about, then I suggest you read this book. Cook tells the story of the real heros of Vietnam, the men who flew the evacuation mission, under fire. The part that got me was the end, where he lists the names of all the men who died performing this dangerous mission. He didn't have to do this, but he did. If you only read one book about Vietnam, make it this one.
Impressed By Recommendations.......2001-03-31
Do recommendations work? You bet! I admit that this is not the type of book I would normally read. However, what impressed me was the recommendations of the two pilots below. The way I figured it, if they thought John Cook had done a great job, and they were there, then maybe it was worth the effort. I'm here to tell you, they were right! Having grown up after the Vietnam war, I was always confused about what really happened there. All I ever heard was how the Americans were the bad guys and the Viet Cong were the good guys. John Cook blows all that away. There were real good guys in Vietnam and they flew the evacualtion missions. Now, for the first time, I understand. Cook's style is very easy to live with. He actually takes the reader along for the ride. The part I liked best was the end. He actually took the trouble to list the names of all those brave men who died saving the lives of the wounded. He didn't have to do this but he did. That got to me. Now, when I think of Vietnam, I'll remember Rescue Under Fire. Thank you, John Cook, and thank all of you who flew these missions.

You've seen the good movie -- now read the excellent novel.......2002-01-05
Mr. Duncan captures the military world perfectly... from squad level all the way up through the political ether-zone that is the brass-filled Pentagon. The dialogue, especially the banter between common soldiers, is realistic and enjoyable to read. The chilling descriptions of the barren Desert Storm environment -- the land, the battles -- are dead-on accurate. I know... I was there with the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force! I highly recommend this book, and I'd love to see more work from Mr. Duncan in the future.

A first person impression of military justice ( or injustice???).......2007-04-15
This is a book about the subject of Son Thang 4 by a combatant that was actually there. I have read the other two books about this incident; Gary Solis' book as well as Denny Garrison's. I enjoy this book the most because it is written by the man who was actually there.
The story is a history of Randy Herrod's time in Vietnam. The story begins with him serving under Lt.Oliver North, yes that North, and being recommended for the Silver Star for courage under fire (which he later receives). It ends with his trial for a war crime (sixteen counts of premeditated murder) and acquittal of the same.
MR. Herrod gives the impressions he received of the military without pulling any punches. The book is raw but well written and a easy read. (I read it cover to cover in a day). It is the accurate depiction of what happened to MR. Herrod in Vietnam.
For an equal read, read the book by Gary Solis which explains the Prosecutions version of the case. I believe this (Solis')is a one sided view of the incident. Leaving out key pieces of evidence or placing the evidence in a different area. I do not question Mr. Solis' military prowess, writing ability, or legal mind; but it is difficult to piece together what happened at the trial of these marines without actually being at the trial. Trnascripts do not do jury trials justice. However, it is my understanding that there were no transcripts produced of the Herrod trial.
I believe that Denny Garrison's book is also good because Denny was there in the Courtroom for all of the trials and refers to his trial noted taken from the actual case in preparation of the book. The key to the Garrison book is the fact that there was evidence of an M-60 machine gun nest used by the VC to fire onto the village at US troops. The only defendant that had the benefit of this testimony was Herrod; although the nest was discovered shortly after the Son Thang incident, and the gun was turned over to military intelligence-who misplaced the weapon. This is key to the defense because the ear witnesses to the incident remember the distinct sound of an M-60 being fired although Herrod's Killer squad did not have a 60.
Overall this is a great read. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Herrod before I read the book and then talked with him after reading it. Mr. Herrod is the one who recommended the other two books to me. I have read all accounts and believe that the report of this crime is the tragedy. Wars are drastic things that call for drastic measures. Life or death decisions are made on instinct. Perhaps in the future of warfare ID badges and enemy cards will be issued to better identify who is a combatant and who is not. Interesting however, that the village in Question was SON THANG 4. According to research into the area the Vietnamese government numbered there villages 1-4. 1 was all friendly. 2 was mostly friendly with a few enemies. 3 was enemy with a few friendly's and 4 was all enemy. Another piece of evidence kept out of the trial.
Perhaps we will never know exactly what happened at SON THANG 4. As it goes in the justice system our guilty defendants are proven to be innocent by the media and our acquited defendants are proven to be guilty.
Herrod's side of the Son Thang Massacre........2006-02-27
I thought the writing for this book was above average and the story was very readable. I guess I am going to have to read Son Thang, An American War Crime by Solis to get the other side. Herrod portrays his story of serving under Oliver North during the Vietnam War. His portrayal of Lt. North resulted in me gaing a new respect for someone I don't like politically. As another reviewer has already stated, Herrod's account may be self serving.
What did happen at Son Thang. Herrod says that people shot at him and his four companions on the hunter-killer team. One bullet grazed the neck of his buddy, and shot away the rifle stock on his M-16. They were then chased but to the fire base. North provided compelling testimony of Herrod's character. His defense resulted in his acquittal. At the end, there were 16-17 dead civilians, some of whom may have been Viet Cong.
The story is very readable. This tells one side of the story. The book on Son Thang tells the other side. Marines were placed in the difficult position here. At this point, I am not sure what is true and what is not.
Lies, all lies!!!.......2005-03-25
This whole book was not true. The author stated a bunch of falsehoods in this book. I agree with the other 2 ratings up here. If you want a TRUE account of what happened, read the book by Gary Solis.
War fiction at its worst.......2001-07-18
A blatant example of self-serving prose meant to whitewash the heinous crime that was committed at Son Thang. Based on a faulty premise, that the investigation was sparked by a report from a green lieutenant, Herrod's book reads like the whine of a child caught in mischief. The mischief this time, though, was the murder of non-combatants, all women and children. Herrod managed to get off with an all-star defense team. Maybe he should hit the lecture circuit with OJ
Good book, but get the facts straight on Randy Herrod.......2000-08-07
Read Son Thang, Am American War Crime, by Gary Solis, to get the whole story on Oliver North's actions in the court martial case of United States vs. Randy Herrod. Herrod was never sentenced to death. He was not even convicted for his role in the killing of 17 Vietnamese women and children. Although the other members of the fire team he lead were all convicted or plead guilty, Herrod was acquitted, based in no small part on the testimony of his former Platoon Commander, Oliver North.

Terrific combo of Suspense and Medicine.......2004-04-23
I am a patient of Dr. Andrews and I enjoyed reading this book because of the detailed medical descripions and because of the references to the bay area. I'm amazed that Dr. Andrews could find the time to write a novel. I look forward to reading Dr. Andrew's other novel, "The California Mille" that has the same main character.
Great reading, especially if you are a patient!.......2002-01-08
I was a patient of Dr. Andrews and was not only impressed by his work on me, but also by his work on this book. It moves quickly, and if you are from the SF Bay Area, you will find the references to the local geography fun and interesting. My family enjoyed this book as well.
patient of Dr.Andrews.......2000-02-09
I had three surgeries on my lumbar spine done by Dr. Brian Andrews and while I used to wait in the waiting room of his San Francisco office I would read his book.It was quite interesting. He is a great writer, but he is an exceptional neurosurgeon.I would have to say that he is the best neurosurgeon in the bay area.
san francisco, mystery and medicine.......2000-01-18
What a great book. If you like the way reading a Ludlum novel makes you feel the atmosphere of the locale his characters carry out their confidential assignments in, you'll be thrilled with this book. You'll feel the atmosphere of the old city. You'll see the beauty of nature and breathe the heavy damp air as you drive in your personally restored porsche roadster down from the million dollar homes in the hills surrounding San Francisco. You'll feel the rush for life that seeing the early morning lights of the city brings as the momentum of the city grabs you and pulls you in. If you like the way Tom Clancy makes you smart, makes you feel that you too understand the technical workings and tactical useage of a complex nuclear submarine, you will feel equally well treated by this book. You will feel the mental exercise and emotional weight of a nuerosurgeon literally accepting the responsibility of another human beings life into your hands. Now, add to all of that a great story line and mystery and you have Knife Under Fire. This book is a good read.
Slow, boring and stuck in the mud........1999-02-09
The book never gets off the ground and simply stays in one place. I suffered reading this novel and finally used it to put me to bed.

Book Description
"Now patients can have the best of both worlds -- freedom from depression and freedom from side effects. Dr. Robert Hedaya offers a wealth of wisdom drawn from years of clinical experience, research, and teaching. This book is a much-needed lantern in the darkness."
-- Norman Rosenthal, M.D., author of
St. John's Wort: The Herbal Way to Feeling Good
* Restore the vital vitamins, minerals, and hormones necessary to maintain good health.
* Optimize your body's metabolic system.
* Restore your ability to experience pleasure in life.
An estimated twenty-five million Americans take antidepressants to combat depression, but most continue to cope with a host of debilitating side effects that equal, and sometimes outweigh, the medication's obvious benefits. Many doctors consider side effects such as weight gain, lethargy, and sexual dysfunction to be necessary evils. Finally, there is a doctor who refuses to trade a patient's total well-being for the treatment of depression.
Clinical psychiatrist Robert J. Hedaya, M.D., has developed a comprehensive mind-body program to restore lost vitality and sex drive and control weight. A Washington Post bestseller in hardcover, his book offers a proven program of nutrition, exercise, stress reduction, and hormone supplementation that not only lessens the side effects of antidepressants but enhances their benefits as well. Now everyone can benefit from the prescription that has worked wonders for his own patients.
Customer Reviews:
a cautionary tale.......2007-07-29
I read this book soon after I started seeing Dr Hedaya for depression. There are some useful nuggets in the book about the benefits of good nutrition, regular exercise, and meditation. However, after following Hedaya's treatment plan to the letter for almost two years - including a regime of up to 30 supplements a day and various diets - and spending over $40,000 on appointments - he charges $400 per 50-minute appointment - and expensive lab tests, I got no results. His so-called integrative holistic approach ('whole psychiatry'), which is supposed to reduce a patient's dependence on medications, had me increasing the number of medications I was on, including an anti-convulsant. His claim to be able to restore a patient's vital biological factors and hormonal balance through nutritional supplements and special diets has not been supported by the available scientific evidence. If you do read the book, I recommend getting a second opinion before acting on its recommendations.
finally!.......2007-07-21
Finally an integrated approach to long-term management of depression. This book bridges the gap between traditional and "alternative" approaches to depression. If you are an intelligent, educated person coping with a serious mood disorder, this is the ideal guide. This approach maximizes the benefits of diet, exercise, and vitamins; while acknowledging that SSRI medication is still a critical part of treatment for many. The author has impressive qualifications and backs up his advice with solid research references. The best popular work on the management of depression that I have read since my diagnosis over a decade ago.
Hardly covers the cause of depression.......2006-01-03
Like all we need is another book justifying why people need to stay on these dangerous psychotic drugs. Well educated and informed people know already that imbalances in brain chemistry are due to imbalances in the chemistry of the body. Start educating people about outstanding nutrition and "miraculously" the chemistry of the brain changes and improves as well.
Mediocre/Dubious.......2005-11-05
One glaring omission is that he fails to mention that SSRIs can cause permanent sexual side effects even after discontinuance. Long overlooked by the medical community. Do google search for details.
Helpful BUT..........2005-05-10
Dr. Hedaya gives some good advice. He points out how important antidepressants are for the well-being of many of us. He also discusses, rightly, how the SSRI's are far from being side effect-free. Finally, he gives some good tips on coping with these problem.
But I believe his advice is too extreme. Asking people to cut out all flour, sugar, caffeine, and alcohol is just not realistic for many folks, as anyone who knows about harm-reduction strategies in treating addictions can testify. If Dr. Hedays would be willing to modify his approach a bit, I think it would be more helpful. My impression from his tone, however, is that he would not be willing to do this.

Book Description
Flavors worth splurging for with little effort. Readily available ingredients. Perfect results time and again. These are the principles behind No-Bake Cookies.
It may be a surprise to learn that some of the best-tasting cookies and bars can be made without turning on the oven. No magic is involved, just a few time-honored techniques for producing irresistible goodies while the kitchennot to mention the cookremains cool. With an assortment of cereals, crushed graham crackers, cookie crumbs, butter, nut butters, cream cheese, and chocolate (and some delicious options for adding flavor such as dried fruits, nuts, toffee, coffee, vanilla, spices, and more), no-bake cookies are a matter of mere minutes in the making.
The recipes in No-Bake Cookies are a boon for busy home cooks with a penchant for sweet treats. They make "first time" cooking fun for kids, too. Even the youngest of children can help with measuring and stirring the ingredients while Mom, Dad, or big brother handle more demanding tasks such as chopping nuts and melting butter on the stovetop.
Most people are familiar with Rice Crispy treats, peanut butter bars, and chocolate-oatmeal no-bakes. No-Bake Cookies expands the horizon with such mouth-watering treats as Maple Praline Drop Cookies, S'Mores Clusters, Quick Caramel Delightfuls, Mixed Fruit, Seed & Nut Energy Bars, PB&J Bites, Maui-Wowie Macadamia Bars, Irish Creamy Mousse Bars, Key Lime Squares, Butterscotch Pudding Bars, Blackberry Mascarpone Bars, and dozens more.
So whether one is looking for a fun-time treat for the kids, a healthy snack for the lunchbox, a dreamy chocolate indulgence, or a creamy-cool summery icebox bar, a recipe from No-Bake Cookies cookbook always fits the bill.

Unexpected.......2007-01-10
There are so many nonbaking recipes. That is great because I don't have an oven to use. They are easy to follow and are they good! I will enjoy this this cookbook for a long time.
Keep the cookie monsters in your house at bay!.......2006-08-24
Reviewed by Kelli Glesige for Reader Views (8/06)
If you are like me and try to keep the cookie monsters in your house at bay, even on hot summer days, you must get a copy of "No-Bake Cookies." Without heating up your kitchen, you can make special treats for your family and friends, and they will love you for it. "No-Bake Cookies" would also be great for those who are too busy to bake, for most of the treats included here go together quickly and easily. The included recipes would also be terrific when the kids want to help out in the kitchen. Several of the steps are well suited for a younger child to handle, leaving only a few advanced steps to an older child or adult. With the oven off, most parents will feel more at ease when the youngsters are helping. And even better, the results deliver a fairly consistent and excellent product if all directions are read and followed. A section is included on selecting the proper ingredients to achieve the best results.
Most of Saulsbury's no-bake cookies are only a matter of minutes in the making. The results are big on taste and little on effort. All the required ingredients are readily available at the grocery and common to most. There should be something for everyone with icebox bars, simple drop cookies, shaped cookies and bar cookies, as well as the well-known cereal bars.
Most cooks are familiar with a few common no-bake cookies such as rice crispy treats and chocolate-oatmeal cookies, but SO MUCH more is included here. And once you see the variety of ingredients Camille Saulsbury uses, you will likely come up with your own variations. A big surprise for me was the inclusion of three packages of ramen noodles in Orange Cream Clusters. Interesting!
I received my copy of "No-Bake Cookies" in July when the mercury was pushing 90 degrees daily, my cookie jar was empty, and my family wanted something sweet to snack on. Therefore, I can personally attest to several of the recipes. The chocolate lovers in my home gave thumbs up to Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Bars and Chocolate Peanut Butter Crisp Rice Bars. We also found Pink Lemonade Squares to be a cool treat on a warm day, but I recommend using regular cream cheese, not a lower fat variety. My recipe turned out a bit too runny. Otherwise, the taste was great.
I enjoy making desserts for my family, and "No-Bake Cookies" did not disappoint me. It will be a welcome addition on my cookbook shelf. I recommend it to all!

Excellent Cookbook for So Many Reasons.......2006-07-24
Just got this last week and am drooling my way through it. Made 2 batches of bars (peanut butterscotch bars with chocolate topping and cappuccino bars) for a work party and people inhaled them. Easy recipes, great introduction, incredible variety of recipes (even some healthy ones that I plan to make for lunch boxes)--a winner in every sense.
Fabulous! get ready to (no-) bake up up a storm!.......2006-06-19
This is such NEAT BOOK! My 8-year-old and 6-year-old are every bit as excited about it as I am. I could not get over the variety of flavors and options in here--all you favorites, but mostly entirely new ideas. We have tried 4 recipes so far, all perfect (Rocky Road Drops, White Chocolate, Coconut & Lime Cookies, Caramel Mallow Goodies, and the Karma Krunch Bars). So yummy, and the girls helped with all of them. I think it took us about 15 minutes total to make each batch in its entirety, if that much time--easy! We are going to be using this all summer long and then throughout the school year. Great for kids, great for adults, lots of fun, delicious cookies.
