5 out of 5 stars I had no idea.......2007-03-16

This book was a gift, literally and... I knew nothing of the Cultural Revolution. This memoir was an introduction and an education into a devasting and horrendous period of time in China, told by a young girl whose educated parents were punished as traitors to the state. Despite that blemish on her record, she strives to be Mao's Best Kid, and model Chinese. Bright and resourceful, she learns for herself.

Beautifully written, with stark and grim detail. I still get shivers thinking of the fear and insecurity when corrupt neighbors would betray friends. When the police might come and take your family away.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully written, on growing up in Revolutionary China........2001-05-16

This book held me captive until I finished it. Jaia, and her husband Douglas, have created a wonderful picture of growing up during the Cultural Revolution. I felt as if I had been transported to China during those days and was right there, living out the same experiences as Jaia. This book is a must for anyone even slightly interested in China, its people, its culture and its history.

4 out of 5 stars Its a great book about the Cultural Revolution........2000-12-13

The White Haired Girl is about a young Chinese girl who had to grow up during the Cultural Revolution during the mid 1960's. She had to overcome the many difficulties such as having her mother taken from her in order for her mother to perform labor duties for the country of China during this time. The girl was faced with being sent away to school to learn and serve the "great" Chairman Mao. After reading this book, I think it's a great portrayal of this young Chinese girl during this difficult time for the Chinese. I like this book because it was great in detail with also a lot of hardships that this girl went through. At some parts of the book, it got boring. However it always seemed to bring itself back up to many high points of the factors of the Cultural Revolution. I recommend this book to people that are interested in different stories of the Chinese and the Cultural Revolution

4 out of 5 stars Review for this book.......2000-03-10

While reading this book, I could see similarities between stories that my parents told me about their experiences. This book accurately depicts the grueling life they went through during the Cultual Revolution, and the everyday fears of survival. The fear of not being able to trust your next door neighbor for fear of betrayal. The fear of not being able to trust even your best friend.

Accurate, moving, and told it a concise narrative style, this book is a must read account of life in China.

4 out of 5 stars An honest, refreshing account.......2000-01-29

I enjoyed "The White-Haired Girl" much more than most other memoirs from the Cultural Revolution. This book really made me feel that I was experiencing events from the perspective of a child in a time of tremendous chaos and political upheaval. Although the author certainly experienced considerable hardship, her story lacks the self-pity or moralizing one often finds in similar accounts.

One proof of the author's skill is the fact that I found myself more interested in the people she writes about then in the political events surrounding them. The people who fascinated me the most were Ms. Sun's father and her friend, Little Plumb. I have a feeling that I would have been interested in their stories regardless of the environment or historical circumstances in which they lived.

One or two parts of the book irked me a little. For example, in describing the romantic evolution of her first love, Ms. Sun says something to the effect that Spring's perfect love turned into Summer's splendid passion and she didn't even tell her mother. I took this to mean that the relationship became very serious, perhaps even physical, and that she concealed this fact from her mother. While I sympathize with Ms. Sun's desire not to be explicit on this subject, I also find the metaphor to be a little weak.

But aside from such insignificant flaws, this is a powerful, honest, and well written memoir that I recommend warmly. I am curious to see the author's next project.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good Biography, a bit heavy on the math.......2005-09-02

This book has a kind of interesting way of doing a biography. The subject, Godel, is one of the pre-eminent mathematicians of the twentieth century. This biography, written by a mathematician spends a good bit of time on the math that Godel was doing as well as the story of his life.

Chapter III, for instance is a capsule history of the development of logic to 1928. This is to give background to the mathematical world as it existed when Godel was starting his work. In particular it discusses the open problems in mathematics that David Hilbert proposed in 1900. Godel resolved the second of these problems.

Coupled with his genius in mathematics, Godel also had serious psychological problems. He eventually died of starvation because he was convinced that the food he was getting had been poisoned and refused to eat. Dr. Dawson has written a compasionate and understanding biography, even if the mathematics gets just a bit deep once in a while.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent........2003-09-20

An excellent biography of Godel. Examines his personal life and mathematical work in an integrated manner. Dawson is thorough, well-researched, and shows a command of the mathematics involved. He provides the most accurate picture available of the real Godel- in contrast to the anecdotal, 'crazy-genius' stories you see elsewhere. This is not a popular account of Godel's work, so the reader will need an understanding of fundamental mathematical logic and Godel's theorem to appreciate much of the book. But Dawson does provide a lot of history of mathematical logic, including a great chapter on developments up to 1928 that could stand by itself. The appendix provides a chronology, genealogy, and "biographical vignettes" of other important logicians.

5 out of 5 stars The definitive biography of Kurt Godel.......2001-08-01

Knowing what went on in the mind of Kurt Godel will forever be unattainable. Nonetheless, John Dawson comes as close as possible to understanding what made Godel click.

Having catalogued Godel's works and personal papers, Dawson saw aspects of Godel's life that perhaps no one short of his wife had seen.

The book is a fascinating jaunt through the through the lives of one of the greatest minds of the 20th century. What is also interesting is Godel's interaction with personalities such as Einstein and Van Neumann.

While the mathematics is often abstract, as can be expected, Logical Dilemmas is a mesmerizing read.

4 out of 5 stars By a Mathematician for Mathematicians.......2001-05-20

Writing a biography of anyone is difficult. How can a writer, no matter how talented, really claim to understand someone well enough to give an overview of his life? When the subject is a genius like Kurt Godel, whose name is known by few and whose work is really understood by even less, the job must be even more difficult. Fortunately, people like Mr. Dawson are will to give it a shot and he succeeds fairly well.

In putting together this biography, Mr. Dawson has the advantage of being mathematician. Additionally, he has the advantage of being the mathematician who catalogued Godel's papers after his death. This gives him a lot of insight into Godel that other writers cannot have and he weaves quotations from these papers into the biography very well. Mr. Dawson's is a well-documented and logical biography that is short on conjecture and long on footnotes. In brief, it is a biography about a mathematician clearly written by a mathematician. This is both its strength and its weakness.

Actually, I like the purely biographical sections of this book very much. The biographical information is clear and informative, though a bit dry in the academic style favored by mathematicians and scientists. Fortunately, having lived and worked among these people, I am comfortable with this style. More importantly, I feel like I have a better idea now of who Godel was and what he was like from reading this book. His focus on his work, his relationship with his family and friends (particularly his wife) and his ultimate decent into mental illness are much more in focus for me now.

On the other hand, the sections that deal with Godel's mathematics are much more difficult to take. The discussion of mathematics in this book goes far beyond what most people are going to be able to handle. I fear the average reader even with a decent math background who comes across this book will drop it as soon as the mathematics starts and that is unfortunate. (I am always looking for books to promote math even among non-mathematicians. This one does not do it.) A reader who can handle the math, however, will find this book revealing.

5 out of 5 stars Thank you, Dr. Cohen.......2007-09-03

I have been a chronic daily headache sufferer for 6 years. The first breakthrough for me was reading Dr. Buchholtz's book Heal Your Headache: The 1-2-3 Program for Taking Charge of Your Pain. It helped me identify my triggers, it helped more than all the neurologists, alternative doctors and chiropractors combined, but I still had a headache about 15 days out of the month. Then I read Dr. Cohen's book and started taking 800mg of magnesium and this seems to be the last piece of the puzzle for me. I haven't had a headache since starting it a month ago, which hasn't happened in 6 years.

Another interesting thing, I started giving my 12 year old son magnesium too and the facial tic that he has had for years stopped. The neurologist had given him an MRI and said his brain was fine, but he had Tourettes syndrome and would need medication when the tics became too pronounced. I looked into the "dopamine inhibitors" that they were going to give him and they were pretty scary big time drugs. I'm so grateful that we won't need to put him on these drugs now. It's amazing how little doctors know about magnesium deficiencies.

My whole family is now taking magnesium, and we all feel better in different ways. Thank you, Dr. Cohen!

Good Luck to all you headache sufferers, I hope this is your answer too.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST NATURAL AND SAFE TREATMENT EVER! A 10 STAR BOOK!.......2007-08-23

THIS BOOK HAS GIVEN ME MY LIFE BACK! Before I read this book and tried the natural and easy treatment, I had migraine headaches and shoulder problems 5 out of 7 days of the week. In fact, I rarely had a day that I did not suffer from headaches and this went on for over 30 years! Since I have read this book and followed the easy to follow treatment program in it, my headaches are now fewer and fewer and milder and milder. Before this book and following it, I had to go to bed in a dark room when I had a severe headache and could not do anything but rest for days at a time. Now, I have my life back! And I truly believe that in time, continuing to follow this program, I will be pain free just about everyday. This is a very easy to follow book and it really works! If you have problems with migraines or any type of headache or even shoulder pain etc, I suggest you buy this book. It could be the best money that you ever spent on yourself. For me, the money that I spent on this book is worth every penny! Note that while I was reading this book, I also went on to research how stress is a MAJOR FACTOR with people who experience headaches and other types of pain and I have learned that STRESS is a MAJOR factor in most people with headaches, especially migraine headaches. Magnesium has not only prevented more headaches in my situation, I am now much more relaxed and do not have the shoulder and muscle aches or the migraines now.

5 out of 5 stars Magnesium works on headaches!.......2007-05-17

This is a simple to read book with such a simple solution to migraine headaches. My headaches have almost disappeared. Literally I was getting headaches daily. I am delighted that I read this book...I have shared it with many friends and at my next annual with OB-GYN, this will be a big topic with me.

5 out of 5 stars The Magnesium Solution For Migraine Headaches.......2007-03-26

Easy to read and easy to understand. I have already followed the directions and have stopped having migraines. I have been battling them for 20 years. The book should be a must read for anyone with migraine headaches. Magnesium is a lot cheaper than most medicines and all doctors.

            4 out of 5 stars Migraines.......2005-10-12

This book is short and to the point; very informative and makes sense. It seems apparent the author is well versed in the subject of migraines from a personal as well as a professional point of view. Recommend it.

I'm not a great chef but I know my way around good soups and good soup recipes. This book means well but the recipes are just so plain and unimaginative. Its good for the beginner who has simple tastes but don't look for anything complex or stick-to-your-ribs kind of fare. Further detracting from the weak recipes are the illustrations which (unnecessarily) dominate every page. Its like they wrote this book to be more of a coffee-table style book than a true cookbook.

Is It Soup Yet? has something to please everyone, from hearty Hamburger Soup for the meat-and-potatoes crowd to elegant Wild Rice and Shiitake Mushroom Soup for gourmets. Included in the 118 recipes are classics like Corn Chowder, Tomato Rice, and Seafood Gumbo, and adventures like Cream of Brie and Leek Soup. One chapter is devoted to soups made in 20 minutes, another to using a crock pot, and yet another to soups made from leftovers such as baked beans or spaghetti and meatballs.

This book has a mixed personality. Cooks in a hurry will be comfortable with some of Vartan's sensible shortcuts, such as using frozen vegetables or canned broth in some recipes. However, her use of garlic powder and parsley flakes may not sit well with more-refined cooks.

Some of the very best soups in this book are international choices like Chinese Sizzling Rice and a German Sauerkraut Soup. There are also highly creative recipes, including an Eggplant Ratatouille, Potato with Horseradish, and Chicken Passarelli, which contains bread-crumb dumplings.

As I write this, there is a pot of Hamburger Soup and a pot of Broccoli Cheddar Cheese Soup simmering on the stove. Literally, the most difficult step in making the Hamburger Soup was browning the meat. I usually do most of my cooking on weekends so that I don't have to come home from work and start cooking a dinner meal. But these recipes are so easy and quick that you can easily put them together in minutes... I also appreciate that the recipes reflect the trend to use ingredients containing low or no-fat. I used skim milk in making the Broccoli Cheddar Cheese soup with the same amount of flour to make a roux, and it turned out beautifully. This is a book that belongs on a coffee table as the illustrations, similar to those found in a children's book, are striking.

Soup is a great comfort food and this book won't disappoint. This will make a great gift for novice or experienced cooks.

I love soup cookbooks - so I'm always looking to add some new ones to my collection. The recipes in "Is It Soup Yet?" are good and cover a fairly broad range of soups. In addition to traditional recipes for chicken noodle soup, international soups and "20 minute" soups are represented.

However, I found the format and pictures to be a bit too precious for this male soup lover. Although it's the recipes that ultimately matter, a cook is always influenced by cookbook aesthetics, and this one just didn't do it for me. Fortunately, the pictures are included here, so you can judge for yourself. I do, however, think that it would make a good gift for people who enjoy cookbooks with country flair.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best!.......2002-01-28

Smaller in size than many other soup cookbooks, this one offers a great recipe on just about every page. Great to use by themselves, more adventurous cooks will also be able to use these recipes as great starting points for some personalized variations. Just a great soup cookbook!
