Customer Reviews:
Amazing autobiography.......2007-06-12
Aline, Countess of Romanos has written a spectacular book. I had to keep reminding myself that I was reading an autobiography and not a work of fiction. Aline is an agent for the OSS during World War II. She blends into Spanish high society and manages to complete her mission and introduce the reader to the thrills and chills of being an undercover agent. She also gives us a glimpse of Spanish Aristocracy, bull fighting and the inner workings of a nineteen year olds dilemma of befriending people who may be targets of her investigation. I have read all of her books but like this one the best. It is full of action, drama, and even a touch of romance. I have recommended it to all of my friends.
Great books.......2007-03-20
I have purchased 4 books by Aline Romanos. I absolutely love them. The fact that there is truth behind the story and that she really was an upper-class lady as well as a spy excites me. I find myself wishing I lived an adventurous life. She has a talent when it comes to recreating her life and exploits. I could not put it down!
A counterfeit spy.......2006-01-28
The most respected historian in the field of espionage, Nigel West, studied all of Aline's spy books marketed as nonfiction and concluded "...all four of Aline's books should be regarded as fiction, and nothing more..." Read "Counterfeit Spies, Chapter 3, by Nigel West, 1998.
Fascinating Page-Turner.......2005-01-13
Written like a fiction novel, this factual, first-person account of a young woman spy during World War II is absolutely enthralling. You'll get a first-hand look into what it's like to be recruited and trained as a spy, then go on your first assignment, mingling with the highest Spanish society while secretly risking your life to uncover essential Axis secrets. The characters in the novel are rich and compelling, and you never know what's going to happen next to the protagonist/ingenue Aline.
I read this book in the '80s and have remembered it ever since. I finally found it again and reread it. It's just as fascinating now as it was then.
The only drawback: If you read at night, you won't get much sleep because this book is nearly impossible to put down.
A Spanish teacher recommends "The Spy Wore Red"...to ALL!.......2004-04-29
Reading and re-reading The Spy Wore Red is a wonderful experience! Most of your other reviewers agree, but there are two aspects they seem to miss: the richness of Spanish cultural information and the possibility of a change in role for women. Aline Griffiths is bright, well educated, and departs from traditional women's work to lead a daring, adventurous, downright-dangerous job.
As a Spanish teacher, I have recommended The Spy Wore Red to my high school students for years. Several students who later spent their college junior year in Spain have come back to tell me how much this book meant to them and how much more they appreciated it following their sojourn there. They could catch glimpses of the old Spain in the new, simply because they had read this thriller.
World War II began as the Spanish Civil War ended(1936-1939), so Aline Griffiths arrived as huge social changes were about to occur in Spain. This book provides a superb peek into the "old" Spain, the Spain of high romance and extraordinarily traditional, now-antiquated values. Yet it is described in context of a delightfully novel-like autobiographical tale. Although it reads better than most spy fiction, one can take notes on Spanish culture on virtually every page. It is engrossing, culture-rich, and shows a young American girl from Pearl River, New York, doing the kinds of things of which only a grownup Nancy Drew type might have dreamed.

Book Description
Only master of mayhem Wally McDoogle can turn an innocent game of laser tag into international espionage. From the Swiss Alps to the African plains, Agent 00 1/7th bumblingly employs such top-secret gizmos as rocket-powered toilet paper, exploding dental floss and the ever-popular transformer tacos (don't laugh, they get great gas mileage) in a desperate attempt to stop the dreaded and super secret . . . Giggle Gun. It isn't until Wally finally takes responsibility for his actions (which unfortunately involves leaping out of a jet fighter traveling 1.2 gazillion miles an hour), that he is finally able to save his life. . . And while he is at it, the entire free world.
Customer Reviews:
My life as a screaming Skydiver.......2006-05-11
This book is funnier than any TV show. The characters in this super funny book are Wally (the human catastrophe), Wallstreet a girl who wants to make $1,000,000 by the age of 13, and Opera who's pretty much a human vacuum. There are many settings in this story - The Swiss Alps, a laser tag store, the sewer, CIA headquarters, and 5,000 feet in the air. The problem in this story is BIG - REAL BIG and simple, Wally becomes (insert James Bond music here) 007th.
In the beginning of the book Wally meets James Blonde, goes to the CIA headquarters, and rides in a limo. Next, he finds out Wallstreet and Opera are coming and finds out James Blonde is evil. To find out what happens, read My life as a Screaming Skydiver.
The theme in this book is to take responsability for your actions. This book reminded me of James Bond. Boys all over the the world would love this book.

REALLY REALLY SPIFFY!!!.......2000-11-23
I've been a long time fan of Bill Myers ever since I was about 7. I got this when I was about 11 years old and I was laughing my butt off! It would make a nice gift for younger kids...or even teenagers. I mean, I'm 14 and still enjoy reading books of this series!
One of the Best.......1999-05-29
This was most definately one of the best Wally McDoogle I've ever read(and I've read them all). It might help to read some of the other ones first, though. Most books in the series relate to the others.
GEARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRT!!!!!!!!!!.......1998-11-19
the book was a little far fetch but not for Wally mcdoogle this is a good book but my life as polluted pond scume is the best.
This book is hilarious.......1998-08-07
One of the funniest books I've ever read. It's exciting, funny, and surprising. I am a big fan of the Wally McDougle books and I think this is one of the best. I would certainly recommend this book to anyone who likes a good laugh.

Customer Reviews:
Dated but inspiring.......2005-03-27
Lord Baden-Powell's autobiographical treatise on the basics of spy trade craft is dated, around a hundred years old at this point. The technological innovations since then have changed many aspects of the intelligence profession. On the other hand, the work is inspiring. B-P's passion for human intelligence collection is contagious. Based on this work, it is clear that he loved what he did for the thrill and challenge of it and it was a fringe benefit that it served his country (I am not questioning his patriotism, but his writing makes it clear that his work was his true passion).
There are numerous vignettes to illustrate different techniques and principle of tradecraft, mostly with some humerous aspect. My personal favorite was the incident where B-P was collecting on German fortifications in the Balkans. He walked through the German military site drawing pictures of the facility, was stopped, and was able to walk away without being detained. How did he pull this off? It was the butterfly net, book about butterflies, sketch book full of drawings of butterflies, and having the nerve to ask the German soldier if he had seen a specific butterfly. Where were the sketches of the fort? Concealed inside the drawings of the butterflies....
The book is short and aimed at 10-15 year olds, but is enjoyable to anyone with an interest in espionage or the history of espionage.
Caveat: If you are a parent and feel that a career in intelligence is not acceptable for your child, keep this book out of your child's hands!
Oh, and Baden-Powell went on to found the Boy Scouts. "Scouts" as in "soldiers specializing in tactical intelligence collection"....

L'avion de mon oncle.......2007-10-09
When John, a boy from Wyoming, breaks his leg in a horse accident, he relies on his father, who is in the army, to talk to the army doctors to fix him up. John and his parents go to France were only the best doctors are located and gets operated on. While in Paris John gets strolled around in a wheel chair by a mysteries hotel porter named Victor, who keeps going to one park to buy tobacco. While Victor is in the store a scary French men keeps coming up to John and talking to him about his mother's house in St. Chamant, a little town in the mountains of France. John gets very angry when Victor takes him to the park after he asked him not to. After a couple of days the scary French men threatens John to give up the house and almost kidnapped him until a stranger came and Victor and the kidnapper ran away. Soon John realizes that he is going to this little French town of St. Chamant with his uncle Paul. His parents are going to London to look at some codes sent by the Germans when they were still occupying France. In the town John sees the scary French lurking around and then finds a German gun and fresh bread in the old ruins of the house of his mother. His uncle is busy building an avion (airplane) so he can't help John find the German who is living in the house of his mother, he does find two kids his age to run along. Charles and Suzanne Miehlac help him out. Read the rest of the book to find out if uncle Paul's plane will fly and if there really is a German in the Mountains of France. Read the book to find out the ending of this book.
My comments.......2006-12-10
Have you ever had to go some where else for a holiday instead of your standard holiday sight? Well in this story Johnny Littlehorn kicked like a steer when his parents sent him to a boring French town instead of their Wyoming ranch with his uncle. But all is not totally boring upon arrival, he learns his uncle is constructing an avion (French for aeroplane) and he is going to be the one to test fly it! He meets new friends along the way. But all is not well in the town when he discovers a ruined house with a backpack hanging on a wall, and shockingly discovers a pistol hidden in a loaf of bread. As he investigates further, he soon gets on the trail of a fugitive Nazi spy! This is the story of Cyrus Fishers "The Avion my uncle flew". Over all this is a nice book about believing in yourself and persevering in overcoming your disabilities. But this book could have been nicer if the author did not put too much French words. It was okay in the start I learned a few French words but some times, the characters spoke French with no translations. This really irritates me, just trying to know what the words mean. I recommend this book to any age...if you like speaking French . I give this book a three stars rating.
A must have book for French students.......2003-03-20
This was absolutely the best book! I homeschool my children and we are learning French. This book integrates french vocabulary words throughout. We kept a list of all the new words we were learning and by the time we got to the last chapter--which was completely in French, we could read and understand it. It was fabulous. The plot was very intriguing, keeping us on the edge of our seats. It was educational as well as entertaining. I just wish this author wrote more books on this order of integrating French into the English. What a painless way to learn a language!
Bring It Back!.......2000-07-24
"The Avion My Uncle Flew" is a classic, a book that I use in the classroom as a teacher, year in and year out. My students find it full of suspense, intrigue, history and humor. They also like to keep track of the French they have learned as they read-- which amounts to pages and pages. If you can't find it in print, I recommend that you scour your library shelves or ask your child's librarian if they have it somewhere in the school district to borrow. Johnny Littlehorn is a very realistic hero and fun role model. At the time that it was written, Homefront Americans took on patriotic roles to support our men and women fighting the Axis overseas, whether it was recycling, rationing, etc. Johnny Littlehorn gets to take a more active role while visiting his uncle in France, even though the war is over. Intrigue and spies go up against All-American Johnny, whose dream it is to have a three-speed bicycle with a lighting dynamo. Refreshing and fun.
What a great book.......2000-05-05
I read this book, and not only found it to be extremely interesting, but also educational. I am so sorry to know that it is out of print, that is a major loss of society. It is suspenseful, easy to understand, has a good plot line, and makes you think. It is a great portrayal of how a young boy in the USA deals with a major change in his life, and I would reccommend it strongly to any one of any age. I loved that book!

Stephanie goes undercover to find John Muir's missing mascot.......1999-06-22
This Full House book was not one of the best in the series, yet was one I enjoyed. It just didn't draw me into the story as the other Full Books do. Yet it does show how school rivalry can go too far, which is a strong point in the book. It was a good effort, yet this story just lacks the special sparkle that most of the stories in the series have.
Bingo is missing and Stephanie is out as a spy to find it!.......1998-06-18
Bingo, John's Muir's lucky mascot is missing! Stephanie is convinced the Kennedy's students stole it, since they are John Muir's biggest rival. So, Stephanie pretends to be a Kennedy student just to spy on the Kennedy students. Will she find Bingo? Read the book yourself to find out!

Book Description
In 1957 two young scientists, Matthew Meselson and Frank Stahl, produced a landmark experiment confirming that DNA replicates as predicted by the double helix structure Watson and Crick had recently proposed. It also gained immediate renown as a "most beautiful" experiment whose beauty was tied to its simplicity. Yet the investigative path that led to the experiment was anything but simple, Frederic L. Holmes shows in this masterful account of Meselson and Stahl's quest. This book vividly reconstructs the complex route that led to the Meselson-Stahl experiment and provides an inside view of day-to-day scientific research--its unpredictability, excitement, intellectual challenge, and serendipitous windfalls, as well as its frustrations, unexpected diversions away from original plans, and chronic uncertainty. Holmes uses research logs, experimental films, correspondence, and interviews with the participants to record the history of Meselson and Stahl's research, from their first thinking about the problem through the publication of their dramatic results. Holmes also reviews the scientific community's reception of the experiment, the experiment's influence on later investigations, and the reasons for its reputation as an exceptionally beautiful experiment.

This is the hardest to read textbook I have ever owned. Textbook authors need to understand that they are writing for students, not their peers. I want the basics. I want to be able to read it in my own language and not have to continually look up words that the majority of people never use. I have other things to do with my time besides trying to decipher what the authors are trying to say. It's as if it's written in code and you have to figure out what it means. It's like learning a different language. They could have put the important stuff in a book about 50 pages long and left out 400 pages of filler.
Poorly written.......2005-02-17
This book is hard to read. I would rather have a book that is not filled with extra large words, nominalizations and third person perspective. Here is an example:
Policy makers and care managers assert that physicians' expressed concern over quality is a way to resist scrutiny and accountability without regard for economic efficiency.
And another:
In spite of its impressive accomplishments, the American health care system exhibits inexplicable contradictions in objectives, unwarranted variations in performance, effectiveness, and efficiency, and long-standing difficulties in its relationships with the public and with governments.
Can you imagine paying $64.95 for this book if you were a student and had to buy it? Why must academics write this way!?!?!
Thank goodness I only paid $10 for the used version.
