Book Description

A masterpiece of historical Þction—and a ferociously gripping adventure tale. Oliver Tressilian, a Cornish gentleman who helped defeat the Spanish Armada, is betrayed by his half-brother, throwing him into circumstances where he becomes a Barbary pirate and a follower of Islam.

2 out of 5 stars A melodrama, not a swashbuckling adventure.......2007-07-03

The book is a melodrama. The first part consists of the main character wanting to marry a 17 year old girl but her brother objects. Lots of talking. Very little action. A duel is almost literally described as "in a few minutes it was over". The second part consists of a woman urging her husband to dislike the main character. Scene after seen of this.

If you just read the plot it reads like a swashbuckling adventure. But the book expands the drama scenes and barely mentions any action. It is well written if you like melodrama. The characters are not all that deep but they are well written and distinct.

5 out of 5 stars Escape Into Fascinating Characters.......2007-04-19

"Captain Blood" is adventurism with lots of action and good character studies. "The Sea Hawk" is also adventure but with far less action and more fascinating character studies. Sabatini invents intriquing thought processes for the leading characters that lead to the unexpected . He is almost as good as Tolstoy in opening up heads. The translation is excellent as the words just flow making it difficult to put the book down.

5 out of 5 stars Action from cover to cover.......2005-03-17

I find it hard at times to pick up novels written a century ago or so, the language can be archaic, the pace a little slow... Not so this novel. It amazed me how quickly I could adapt to Sir Oliver and his world. The heroes were larger than life, the villains deliciously captivating. I found it incredibly hard to put down. It's just nice to read about a hero that stands for something, a person true to their beliefs. Purists would say Sabatini relies on coincidence to move his plot forward, but the world he creates makes it all believable. If you are hesitant about reading the prose of classic swashbuckling literature, read the first three chapters, I guarantee you'll be hooked ;)

5 out of 5 stars No Superficial Linguistic Dust Here.......2005-01-21

Having recently read several modern novels by contemporary authors, I was transported by THE SEA-HAWK back in time to an earlier style of writing and a distinctly different use of language. How many books, for instance, have you read lately that use the verb "trepan" very frequently? Didn't think so.

Having found modern authors' use of language to be pretty bland and, in a few instances, actually to violate grammatical convention, I was thrilled to encounter Sabatini's 1915 novel with its beautiful, effective use of the language. For a lad born and educated in Europe, Sabatini wrote in English with a felicity that usually eludes native-born American writers, and, dare I say, quite a few British authors, too. Thinking of the modern American authors I have read lately, I can say with pleasure that reading Sabatini is like taking a fresh, invigorating intellectual shower and thoroughly ridding oneself of the superficial linguistic dust lingering from their various works.

Of course, there is far more to THE SEA-HAWK than its sparkling use of language. Sir Oliver, or, to use his Muslim name, Sakr-el-Bhar, is a complex character who responds to his changing fortunes as a real person who wishes to survive and even prosper, yet who retains his dignity in the face of undeserved adversities that could have easily crushed a lesser man. The plot is truly gripping, and the reader eagerly pursues the story to learn what will befall Sir Oliver next and whether he can somehow extricate himself from this new quandary and perhaps even turn the situation to his advantage.

All is believable. The settings in which the plot unfolds are exotic but realistic. Though he knows it is fiction, the reader can easily accept the reality of the setting, the characters, and the action. While certain fortuitous coincidences do occur from time to time, no miraculous escapes or incredible rescues are foisted upon the hapless reader. Nothing untoward jars him from his vicarious participation in this great adventure.

Enjoy THE SEA-HAWK for its wonderful use of language. Enjoy it for the variety and depth of its characters. Enjoy it as a swashbuckling adventure on the high seas. (One simply cannot write about Sabatini without using the word "swashbuckling" at least once.) Enjoy it for the reality of its settings and events. There are critics who say that THE SEA-HAWK does not reach quite the same degree of excellence as do some of Sabatini's other novels, such as CAPTAIN BLOOD and SCARAMOUCHE. However, I beg to disagree with them. If you have enjoyed any of Sabatini's other novels, do not hesitate to read this one, for it is equally enjoyable. If you are coming to Sabatini for the first time, you will find THE SEA-HAWK to be a fascinating introduction to his work, and you will be as motivated as I to follow it with several of his other novels. Once begun, Sabatini is habit-forming!

4 out of 5 stars Marvelous.......2004-06-17

I hate to be another person to write a glowing review of "The Sea Hawk," but I can't help myself. Sabatini is one of my favorite authors, and this is one of my favorite books by him. It's the sweeping saga of an English gentleman's transformation into a Muslim pirate circa 1590, and its themes of family betrayal, religious revenge, and tormented love are worthy of a Verdi opera. Sir Oliver and Rosamond are familiar Sabatini character types, but I personally feel they have more depth and vitality here than, say, the leads in "Captain Blood."

"Hawk" does have a few problems though, shared by other books in the Sabatini canon. Like "Scaramouche," there's the slightly awkward three act structure. "Hawk" gets off to an exciting start, then bogs down a bit when it introduces the North African setting and the Muslim characters, and in Act 3 finally careens to a terrific and breathless finish. Also, as another reviewer pointed out, the Muslim characters, especially compared to their English counterparts, are not particularly convincing. In fact, their overly stilted and archaic dialogue bears an amusing resemblance to the historical speechifying satirized by Thackeray in his 1850 burlesque "Rebecca and Rowena." But all in all, these are minor complaints. "The Sea Hawk" is a ripping read by one of the 20th century's masters of historical fiction.

From beginning to end, "The Sea Hawk" is also irresistably cinematic, from the initial descriptions of Sir Oliver's mansion to the final shipboard embrace. However I don't expect that this will be remade into a movie any time soon, given today's political climate. I read this shortly after the Madrid bombings, and it was decidedly unsettling reading about a Western guy who converts to Islam and takes up a jihad against the wicked Spanish. Yes, times have certainly changed since "Hawk" was written in 1915. One wonders what Sabatini would make of John Walker Lindh...

2 out of 5 stars Good Book- Poorly Written.......2001-03-20

Having read most of the books available on WWII PT Boats, I find this work full of factual and biographical material, but alas, very poorly written. I would wonder how the publisher let this text material reach the publication stage without some severe editing and/or rewriting.

3 out of 5 stars PT boats are a great subject for memoirs, but..........1999-11-16

One of the most neglected aspects of World War II combat was the service of the shallow water hunters, the PT boats. These small warships, the most heavily armed for their size in the war, and their brave crews did some pretty extraordinary things. This memoir by a boat commander and later squadron commander could have benefited from some editing. Not for errors necessarily, after all the events recounted occurred 50 plus years ago, but to clean up the writing. The author repeats himself and it almost seems that he was thinking that he would be paid by the word. The style itself is bombastic and full of braggadocio in places, but is frequently leavened with rather straight-forward recitations of brave events. The author too recounts his amorous exploits, thankfully not in too much detail as that really would be bragging, and that detracts somewhat. Makes you wonder what the sailors were doing while the officers squired the nurses around... All told, this is a fairly good read and has the advantage of being written by someone who actually rode the boats into battle.

4 out of 5 stars Great Read!.......1999-07-20

Great summer reading. This whopping tale of one mans service in the PT boats is great history and adventure. There are awkward bits but all in all I think this adds a key element to the PT story!

    Book Description

This 1940 swashbuckler is one of the best examples of the old Hollywood studio system at work. Scholars and film buffs will learn much about collaborative filmmaking on an exceptionally large scale as Rudy Behlmer traces step-by-step the evolution of The Sea Hawk. The very anti-thesis of an auteur film, The Sea Hawk illustrates the ways in which creative input from just about everyone on the Warner Brothers lot—producers, writers, art directors, director, cameraman, special effects team, editor and composer-conductor—resulted in a film in the familiar Warners house style.
This book includes the complete screenplay.

      Book Description

On March 31, 1854, Commodore Matthew Perry signed the Treaty of Kanagawa on behalf of the United States’ government. This moment signalled the end of the ruling Shogunate’s policy of isolationism, which had been in place since the early 16th century. Although foreign nations—the Portuguese, the British, and Spanish—had once traded there, the perceived threat from the spread of Christianity led to Japan’s borders being closed, a policy rigorously enforced by the Shogunate, who signified their resolve through systematic expulsion, detention, and execution. Perry’s success, however, contrived to open up what had once been "the curiosity of Christendom" to the nations of the world. Commodore Perry and the Opening of Japan is the official account of this historic expedition. Written in a fluent and engaging style, this first-hand report details the colorful minutiae of the voyage to "terra incognit," while situating its enterprises and motivations within a wider social and cultural context.

In 1936, a 20-year-old artist using the name Willis B. Rensie jump-started the comic-book medium. Writing and illustrating an action-packed weekly serial called Hawks of the Seas-a pirate adventure series set in the 18th-century Caribbean-the artist created one dynamic strip after another, honing his storytelling craft and shaping the comics medium with each one. That artist was none other than comics grand master Will Eisner! From 1936 to 1938, Eisner's Hawks of the Seas weekly stories were translated into several different languages and distributed all over the world, and now they're collected here in this handsome hardcover edition. The stories themselves stand the test of time, as thrilling and exciting as they were almost 70 years ago. Featuring an introduction by comics veteran Al Williamson and a new foreword by Eisner himself.

Born by mistake, or connivance, to struggling parents in a small Lancashire cotton town in 1903, an uninspired Darlington inadvertently escaped the obscurity of farming life and rose instead, against all odds, to become within a few short years the world's greatest expert on chromosomes, and one of the most penetrating biological thinkers of the twentieth century. Harman follows Darlington's path from bleak prospects to world fame, showing how, within the most miniscule of worlds, he sought answers to the biggest questions--how species originate, how variation occurs, how Nature, both blind and foreboding, random and insightful, makes her way from deep past to unknown future. But Darlington did not stop there: Chromosomes held within their tiny confines untold, dark truths about man and his culture. This passionate conviction led the once famed Darlington down a path of rebuke, isolation, and finally obscurity.

As The Man Who Invented the Chromosome unfolds Darlington's forgotten tale--the Nazi atrocities, the Cold War, the crackpot Lysenko, the molecular revolution, eugenics, Civil Rights, the welfare state, the changing views of man's place in nature, biological determinism--all were interconnected. Just as Darlington's work provoked him to ask questions about the link between biology and culture, his life raises fundamental questions about the link between science and society.

                  Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Dawkins' predecessor brought back to life.......2004-10-06

This biography of Cyril Darlington is of a renowned scientist who enjoyed a long career, first as a microscopist exploring the workings of the chromosome, then as a leader in the fight against Lamarckism, Lysenkoism, Marxism, and suppositions on the equality of men. His early career was built primarily on a book, "Recent Advances in Cytology" which brought together a coherent picture of the chromosomes and their role in evolution. Perhaps a key insight, new with him, was that though the chromosomes contained the hereditary information, they could be understood better by seeing how evolution affected them as well.

Darlington was a confirmed materialist, hard headed scientist, but was positively attracted by controversy, and a rather intolerant, arrogant character to boot. He had many enemies, but was a forceful and prominent public voice, who relished his role. This combination makes for a lively biography, and deserves serious consideration by anyone interested in the history of the development of the "modern synthesis" of evolutionary thought. He was a driving force for much of it.

Darlington was during the 1940's to the 1980's a sort of early version of Richard Dawkins, and was opposed for many years by JBS Haldane, who was a sort of early version of Stephen Jay Gould. Many of the controversies, being rooted in deep-seated views of human nature, have hardly changed. There is the Marxist version of a faith in the malleability of man by wishful thinking, opposed by hard lessons drawn from science, evolutionary theory and the observation that man is a creature acting in accordance with hereditary behaviors which have developed differently in different races. Not for Darlington the notion that race is a "social construct" or that IQ is a "reified" useless hypotheis, the same for all races. He was a sociobiologist well before the term was invented.

The first part of the book that deals with Darlingtons cytogenetics is not the easiest read, dealing as it does with a pretty arcane subject in perhaps a little too much detail, even for the informed reader. The old controversies about such things as parsynapsis vs telosynapsis, are enfolded in a vocabulary that will be intimidating to many readers. I wish, though, that he had covered in a little more detail the methods of cytogenetics, the stains used, the sample preparation methods, and so on. Just how hard was it to prepare an informative experiment? A little more about the influence of Darlington's cytological insights on the conventional modern practice of the art would have been welcome too.

No matter--skip on to the major part of the book where Harman covers the course of the debate over the nature of man and the insights brought by an evolutionary perspective. The meat of the book is here.

In his later years, as for all scientists who live a long time, the main developments in his science began to become too much for him--molecular biology, psychometrics, and a bevy of new techniques were to add much that he could appreciate, but could contribute very little. Exploring the big picture, speculating, theorizing and publicizing became his game, and we are better off for it.

Harman has done a splendid job in this biography--he writes clearly, and has a very good understanding of his subject. It is based on exhaustive research and interviews and will be the definitive work for a long time. The many pictures bring the story to life, and make for a lively read. I enjoyed the book a lot and even re-read much of it for a second time!

                  5 out of 5 stars A deep book.......2004-09-09

Harman has produced one of the deepest books about biology and evolution I have encountered in over 30 years of more-than- amateur interest in the field. He has been able to pinpoint the true paradoxes of life: foresight versus randomness, the individual versus the group, the past as against the future. And he has done so with a wonderful pen: understated, deeply intelligent, deeply modest. I believe that while lesser intellects may not comprend its true value, really smart people will recognize it as nothing short of a brilliant book.

                  5 out of 5 stars great read!.......2004-07-20

This personal biography is really a biography of biology in the 20th century. any one interested in how scientific and cultural/political ideas interact, and in how scientists have attempted to understand large issues like human culture and history with the help of small evidences, like genes and molecules, will have a ball reading this lovely, well written book.

                  5 out of 5 stars fascinating!.......2004-07-02

I thoroughly enjoyed this engaging and fascinating tale of one of the most controversial and thought provoking scientists of the twentieth century. I recommend it highly to anyone interested in science, biography, and history.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptionally interesting - great for non-scientists as well.......2004-06-23

I am not a scientist, but very much enjoy biographies. I read this book on a friend's recommendation, and literally could not stop turning the pages. Darlington, the man and the scientist, is truly brought to life on these pages.

I found the story behind Harman's `unlikely scientific hero' consistently engaging. The author does a superb job of seamlessly weaving together the many colorful strands of the social and scientific fabric that served as backdrop to Darlington's life. With Harman as a guide, the reader gains a unique first-hand appreciation for Darlington's days, reliving them as heady times for genetics in particular and for society as a whole.

A must-read for all those in the know. Amongst the best biographies I have come across.

5 out of 5 stars great bread book.......2006-09-04

I have started baking for the last 2 months. Ms. Moore's book has delicious and various recipes. So far, all the recipes I have baked came out tasting great. Especially, the Hearty Brown Bread!
I would definitely recommend this book to anybody who is interested in baking bread and is a 'Home-Baker' (like me).

5 out of 5 stars The Complete Authority on Bread Baking!!.......2005-07-17

There aren't any secrets in Marilyn Moore's "The Wooden Spoon Bread Book." She has carefully and lovingly shared them all in an easy to follow, step by step format. Whether you have baked bread for years or are just starting to think about it, "The Wooden Spoon Bread Book" will take you where you want to go. I actually have the older edition from 1987 so I can't comment on the new illustrations. What I can say is this book has never been stored away or replaced since '87 and has been a staple in my kitchen from the beginning. A true sign (for me) that a recipe book is a classic is its physical condition. If the pages are crisp and clean, chances are it hasn't seen much use, probably for a good reason. My copy of WSBB is worn and the pages have swelled from constant use. For close to 18 years, this has been the only book I have ever turned to for bread baking. That has to say something. Two of my all time favorite recipes are Beignets (page 229) and Classic Croissants (page 236.) Both take some time (overnight rising) but are simple and lead to professional results. If you buy the book for these two alone, you have made an investment in culinary pleasure for a lifetime. I am not exaggerating, they ARE that good.
I don't think there is a loaf of bread that has not been included in this collection. There are the traditional yeast loaves, international varieties, sweet breads and snacks. Marilyn Moore has produced a classic encyclopedia you will refer to time after time.

5 out of 5 stars This one gets it right!.......2002-09-24

Several years ago I began baking bread as a hobby, and this hobby has now fed my family on a fairly regular basis. In an effort to expand my horizons and add good recipes to the collection I already had, I chose this book after perusing it on a store shelf. After looking at book after book after book, I found that this one was better than most.

Many books on bread rely on pictures and diagrams to sell themselves. This one is not so -- you will not find pictures in this book accompanying the recipes. What you will find, though, is a series of well thought-out and tested recipes that are clear, concise, and easy to follow. The author has done a fine job of keeping things simple, even on the most complex recipes.

I have not made all the recipes in this book; to do so would take more time than I have in the evenings. However, I have made many of them and all of the ones I have tried have been successful. One of the best recipes in the whole book is "Cut Vienna Loaf" -- if you try no others, I encourage you to try this one.

This book has an interesting organizational layout. It begins with a section detailing basic bread making, including a couple of recipes, some terminology, and a very short primer on how to create your own recipes by modifying other recipes that you already have. It then plunges into a section called "One Baker's Dozen" which is a collection of very good recipes that the author has chosen as her favorite. Sections following that one include white breads, quick breads, and even snack breads and crackers.

Many authors of bread cookbooks like to add their commentary on their personal experiences with the sections or even the recipes in their books; this one is no exception. Where this book differs is that the commentary is not fluffy, look-at-all-the-cool-things-I-have-done type of drivel that can be found in many other books. It fits with the sections and the recipes and adds a nice dimension to it. While certainly not necessary, it's not out of place here, either.

This book is well-suited for the beginner and the expert alike. Anyone who is interested in making good homemade breads will benefit greatly by having this book in the ready. It is clear and easy to follow, and the results are superb.

5 out of 5 stars The Wooden Spoon Stands for Magic in Your Bread!.......2000-12-01

I bought this book several years ago when it was first published. I have worn out the original and have purchased another copy. Bread has been a hobby of mine for about twenty years, yet I learned new techniques from this book. My favorite recipes in here are the Irish quick bread (great for making and taking to work) and the Granny Smith Apple Bread (great, period).

While the Clayton bread books are more comprehensive, I find that this reference is both more reable and easier to understand.

Whether you are new to bread or an old hand at it, this book will have something to offer you!

5 out of 5 stars For every level of baker..........2000-08-31

I highly recommend this book for every level of 'baking skill' - as an experienced baker, I continue to enjoy the recipies in the book. My husband requests "anything from the bread book!"

The book is an excellent book for novice and experienced bakers. There is an excellent introduction and 'lesson' for those who want to learn - as well as those who jst want to understand how to bake better bread.

An excellent addition to any collection.
