In the second part of his Reminescences, the German fugitive Carl Schurz describes his arrival in the pre-civil war USA, his active role in the political life of the young nation, and the events leading to the Civil War. The paperback is a facsimile of the original book published in 1907, and it includes anecdotes with and pictures of political figures of the time, including Abraham Lincoln, Jefferson Davis, and Charles Sumner. The book is beautifully written and it displays an active mind and a great sense of humor. 5 Stars.

      Book Description

The biography of Carl Schurz is a story of an amazing life. At the age of 19, Schurz, a student at the University of Bonn, became involved in the Revolution of 1848. Participating in the revolutionary army, he managed to escape through a sewer during the siege of Rastatt, flee across the Rhine to France, and come back to rescue his professor, Gottfried Kinkel, from a jail near Berlin. This deed made him famous, and when he came to American in 1852, Schurz was nominated for lieutenant governor of Wisconsin on the Republican ticket. He quickly rose in the party and was the head of the Wisconsin delegation at the 1860 National Convention. He worked hard for the cause, and Lincoln rewarded him with the post of Minister to Spain. At the outbreak of war he returned to join the Union Army, became a Major General, and took part in several important battles. After the war, he moved to Missouri, was elected Senator from that State, and became a role model for his fellow German Americans. In 1871 he became one of the main figures in the Liberal Republican movement, and in 1877 President Rutherford B. Hayes appointed him Secretary of the Interior. After his retirement from the cabinet, Schurz became active in the politics of New York, as an advocate of municipal and civil service reform. He was a leading Mugwump who supported Grover Cleveland in 1884 and at the end of his life became a violent opponent of imperialism. He died in 1906. Carl Schurz, the man, his story, his ideals and his example, are particularly appropriate today because of the light his life sheds on the never-ending problems of immigration, assimilation, and the retention of ethnic identity. Carl Schurz's career furnishes a model example for all of these.

4 out of 5 stars Schurz bio thorough, easy read.......2007-04-05

The biographer has obviously pored over all the relevant documents to produce a bio that is thorough as it is comprehensible. The author does not gloss over Schurz' flaws and does a good job of taking the reader step by step through the world of American politics during the latter half of the 19th century.

3 out of 5 stars Who is Carl Schurz.......2000-04-04

Carl Schurz is a very important and very interesting personage from the 19th Century. It is unfortunate that he has become a rather obscure figure in this century. Hans Trefousse wants to make him a little less obscure. He has written an excellent biography which should satisfy anyone interested in learning more about Carl Schurz. The book provides a comprehensive picture of Schurz's entire life. In fact only a quarter of the book covers the Civil War years. The revolutionary upheaval in Germany in the 1840's is given extensive coverage and may be the most intriguing portion of the book. There is also a complete anyalysis of the postwar years when Schurz was a leading political figure in the United States. Trefousse's 386 page work is exhaustively researched. He waded through dozens of manuscript collections and newspapers. The bibliography alone takes up 22 pages! Nineteen illustratons augment the narrative. If you are interested in Schurz, this is the book to buy.

                Book Description

Text extracted from opening pages of book: AN ESSAY BY CARL SCHURZ Edited by Arthur Reed Hogue The University of Illinois Press, 1951 U RB AN A COPYRIGHT 1951 by the University of Illinois Press and printed in the United States of America by The Haddon Craftsmen, Inc., in Scranton, Pennsylvania Charles Sumner Introduction CARL SCHURZ, the author o this essay, possessed unique qualifications for writing a biographical study of his contemporary, Charles Sumner. Schurz could draw upon first-hand knowledge of many of the events and excite ments in which Sumner achieved prominence, and Schurz understood thoroughly Sumner 's thought and feeling. Both men worked for the same causes, both men invoked the same principles when dealing with the tragic issues and aftermath of the Civil War in the United States. Yet behind these similarities were some differences in origin and background which undoubtedly gave Schurz the advantage of a critical perspective, for he entered American politics after receiving a German university education. In addition to his personal knowl edge, and perspective, Schurz could bring into play a literary talent which enabled him to deal skillfully with his materials. Schurz was born in 1829 in Liblar, a village in Rhenish Prussia. He attended the University of Bonn; li ^ HjJruaiJlp 6612460 2 CHARLES SUMNER :^ rz Essay by Carl Schurz joined, as a liberal, in the revolutionary activities of 1848; and spent some years in exile, living in France, Switzerland, and England, before coming to the United States in 1852. After several months of indecision about occupation and residence, he made his home in Water town, Wisconsin. There, as a Republican, he took part in the political campaign of 1856. His campaign speeches four years later brought him into national prominence in the course of his extraordinary exertions to secure votes for Abraham Lincoln in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indi ana, Illinois, Missouri, and Wisconsin. From this time until Sumner 's death in 1874 the two men, Schurz and Sumner, agreed upon fundamental policies and principles. Schurz, like Sumner, pressed Lincoln toward a policy of emancipation. He urged it from Spain, following his appointment as Minister in 1861; he urged it from camp, after his appointment as brigadier general in the Union army in 1862. When the war ended, Schurz, like Sumner, opposed President Johnson and felt the necessity of Congressional recon struction to secure for the Negro the equality of rights which abolitionists had long advocated. Sumner en couraged Schurz to accept President Johnson's assign ment of a tour of inspection through the South in 1865. The result was a famous report on postwar conditions which strengthened the Congressional rather than the Presidential plans for reconstruction. In 1869, representing Missouri, Schurz had oppor tunities to work even more closely with Sumner in the United States Senate where Schurz agreed with Sumner on the need for civil service reform; he opposed, as Sumner did, the corruption of President Grant's ad CHARLES SUMNER: Introduction 3 ministration; and he attempted, like Simmer, to defeat Grant's re-election in 1872. When Sumner died, in 1874, the people of Boston recognized the close association of the careers of Schurz and Sumner by inviting Schurz to deliver the eulogy at memorial services for their representative. It is now possible to prove that twenty years after the eulogy Schurz addressed himself to the project of a biography of Sumner. By 1894 he had demonstrated his ability as a biographer: first, with a two-volume life of Henry Clay for the American Statesmen Series, and second, with a masterful article on Abraham Lincoln, published in the Atlantic Monthly, June, 1891. In the latter he reviewed, ostensibly, the ten volumes of John G. Nicolay and John Hay. Actually, after brief men tion of their Abraham Lincoln, A History, Schurz launched into a biography of his own, soon to be pub lished by Houghton Mifflin Company in the f

                    Book Description

The British archaeologist Grahame Clark was a seminal figure in European and world archaeology for more than half of the twentieth century, but, at the same time, one whose reputation has been outshone by other, more visible luminaries. His works were never aimed at a wide general public, nor did he become a television or radio personality. Clark was, above all, a scholar, whose contributions to world archaeology were enormous. He was also convinced that the study of prehistory was important for all humanity and spent his career saying so. For this, he was awarded the prestigious Erasmus Prize in 1990, an award only rarely given to archaeologists. This intellectual biography describes Clark's remarkable career and assesses his seminal contributions to archaeology.

Clark became interested in archaeology while at school, studied the subject at Cambridge University, and completed a groundbreaking doctorate on the Mesolithic cultures of Britain in 1931. He followed this study with a magisterial survey, The Mesolithic Settlement of Northern Europe (1936), which established him as an international authority on the period. At the same time, he became interested in the interplay between changing ancient environment and ancient human societies. In a series of excavations and important papers, he developed environmental archaeology and the notion of ecological systems as a foundation of scientific, multidisciplinary archaeology, culminating in his world-famous excavations at Starr Carr, England, in 1949 and his Prehistoric Europe: The Economic Basis (1952). Clark became Disney Professor of Public Archaeology at Cambridge in 1952 and influenced an entire generation of undergraduates to become archaeologists in all parts of the world. He was also the author of the first book on a global human prehistory, World Prehistory (1961).

Lindner manages to mix together various of his life's lessons learned, his career as a media/entertainer rep, his tennis experience, his battle with weight and his parents' wisdom and lack-thereof into a somewhat difficult-to-read to the end self-help book. There is nothing new here in the self-help genre (not that there ever is) just a lot of repackaging and sprucing up with italicized terminology (Heart-of-Hearts) and self-help advice.

The advice is generally good (delay gratification, go with your heart, etc) and Lindner is a good story-teller. The book is most captivating when he is recounting epsiodes from his life that have affected him to this day (his mom's advocacy for his college recommendation in high school; his dad's challenging his mom on her extreme lateness habit). As somenone who is knee-deep in media entertainment representation, Lindner probably has a good novel in him about media personalities and behind the scenes shenanigans.

There are some glaring weakenesses. Roger Maris' difficulty handling the attention during his quest to break Babe Ruth's home run record is oversimplified as a matter of "not seeing the big picture". Also, on the one hand Linder appropriately gives us Kobe Bryant as an example of someone who made a bad decision during his so-called "Crunch Time", then at the end of the book give us Madonna as a role model of ends-over-means decision-making.

Lindner could have used better advice from his editorial support. He introduces key terminology at the beginning, the so-called Heart-of-hearts, for example, without defining it and giving examples (this comes near the end), and he provides other how-to's at the very end of the book as well.

I have to admit that I'm naturally cynical of self-help books, and it was just a coincidence that I was at a book store clearance sale and happened to be thinking about life decisions on the same day. The cover of this book is catchy (don't say it) and it became a seven dollar impulse buy. I was actually sort of excited to start reading it, but it didn't take long to become designated "toilet reading," and it probably wouldnt even get that if I wasn't so cheap to try to get my seven dollars worth. The book seems so silly at times, I'm even embarressed to be reading it on the toilet. The author keeps repeating stupid terms like "heart-of-hearts," and "strata-gem" that have no meaning as far as I'm concerned. Here's an example of advice that you'll get from this book (paraphrased rather heavily): [Use "Out-Of-The-Box decision making" sometimes, making an unconventional rather than conventional choice. I did, and now I'm extremely successful in everything I do. My clint so-and-so also did, and he is successful as well, for example this one time he chose to ...]. It just doesn't do anything for me.

Ken has put together a clear and easy-to-understand guide to making decisions for your career and your life. His method is simple and it WORKS. I also enjoyed his stories about his clients and how certain decisions immensely influenced their careers in a positive direction. Very practical and a must read!

Unless you're really clueless in the area of social skills, or maybe if you're just really young and haven't lived long enough to learn skills us older folk take for granted, this book would be a waste of your time. I'm amazed intelligent people like Matt Lauer actually have a need for a strategist. For the rest of us, its unlikely you're going to read much of anything that you dont already know.

First Lindner book I have read. How does a self-aggrandizing daddy's boy manage to get the puffy endorsements from celebs? Amazing, and this book should be an emabarassment to a smart guy like Matt Lauer, who is the star of the author's claim to fame. Boring, trite material which could be summarized if the whole book said only "carpe diem." Maybe he is smart -- he got my money and evidently from others who were taken in by "reviews".

I'm a Personal Chef specializing in dinner parties and I bought this book as inspiration for fine seafood entrees.

What originally attracted me to this book is that almost all the recipes are illustrated and the overall theme: no fish in this book is in danger of being over harvested. I like the idea of being a responsible cook.

All the recipes I've tried (including the pistachio encrusted trout with cilantro-citrus hollandaise) have been accurately written and the end result matches what's described in the recipe. It's obvious that the recipes in this book are tried & true and not just a bunch of random recipes thrown together in a book.

I highly recommend this book for the experienced cook who's looking new ways to prepare great seafood.

Access to fresh seafood is a 'must' for complete appreciation of OCEAN FRIENDLY CUISINE: SUSTAINABLE SEAFOOD RCIPES FROM THE WORLD'S FINEST CHEFS - but those with such access will find here an exceptional guide which explains different seafood available to cooks. The Monterey Bay Aquarium endorses the contents of a guide to how seafood is harvested and how chefs prepare dishes cooked with seafood from fish farms. Each dish has been designed by a leading chef - and each explores the possibilities of seafood. Color sidebars of information comment on environmental status of each fish while introductions and color photos provide discussions of the ecology and nature of each: a perfect - and unusual - compliment to the gourmet dishes.

I have tried a number of the recipes in the book and they are delicious and not difficult to make (no exotic or hard to find items). I have also found myself looking for the "friendly" fish when purchasing and avoiding the ones identified as endangered or stressed. I would recommend this book to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars The love of food.......2005-05-03

Ocean Friendly Cuisine is a great overview of fresh and saltwater bounty that can be enjoyed without the descimation of a species. The recipes reflect the inspirations of a lot of good chefs and organizations that quite simply love to cook and to present a variety of seafood that reflects the complexity of what is fish and shellfish. It's important to free ourselves from sinking into a culinary sameness that seeks to destroy specific species of fish such as the Orange Roughy, Chilean "Sea bass" not a bass, Red Snapper, Black Grouper, Atlantic halibut, bluefin tuna and wild abalone to name a few. This cookbook shows the way.
There are more fish in the sea than we are usually exposed to and the insights of this book, the Montery Aquarium, Seafood Choices Alliance, Sea Web and the chefs and restaurants involved in this effort go a long way to show how great the underutilized seafoods are today. I am lucky enough to have recipe included in this book, and can attest that the recipes represent the best of contemporary cuisine, cuisine well worth cooking both at home and professionally. If we shop wisely and dine with attention to the details of sustainable seafood then we can make a mark on making this a better world through taste and farming/fishing. As M. Cousteau tells us in the forward, seafood is our last hunted species commercially sold in markets and restaurants and we should respect the life cycle of our greatest food.

To J. Fraioli's credit he brings it all togther. There are so many flavors and textures in so many different seafoods that it is amazing how cooks are lured into preparing the same fish over and over, and Ocean Friendly Cuisine joins the ranks of interesting and easy to use books that inform, teach, show, and lead the cook towards being better at cooking and at being a part of the world. Tilapia, trout, farmed abalone, PEI mussels, wild coho/chinook/silverbrite/sockeye salmon, Opah, trevally, blue crab, stone crab, farmed oysters, clams, striped bass, white bass, octopus, sea urchin sablefish, white sturgeon (farmed), wahoo/ono, and this is just to name a few, a few who each have a distinct flavor and texture all it's own. The book has ample illustrations to show how beautiful fresh seafood looks. Ocean Friendly Cuisine explores the suggested seafood and shows how to ask questions when you shop either in the International markets, by purveyor, butcher shop, grocery store, or online for the best possible fish of the day. We should always be able to have a true fresh fish of the day, and by respecting what is sustainable this will always be possible.
