Now after 141 years, these diaries originally compiled in two manuscripts, are being published for the first time unedited and in thier entirety. Rarely are any new discoveries made of the written material on the American Civil War and this may be the last major find of Civil War period literature.

The Lost Civil War Diaries: The Diaries of Corporal Timothy J. Regan, edited by David C. Newton & Kenneth J. Pluskat, Trafford Pub., Victoria BC, 2003, 341pp.

I recently stumbled on this book quite by accident. Was doing some research on the 9th MA during the early 1900s, and came across mention of it while doing a Google search. It's a volume that was well worth getting.

Irish-born Timothy Regan was about 28 when he began his diary on 15 April, 1861, just after hostilities opened and just before enlisting in Co. E, 13th MA Infantry, which was soon redesignated as the 9th MA. He served with the 9th throughout its time of service, mustering out with the regiment in June
1864. Along the way, in 1862 he spent some time as a POW before being exchanged, in late 1863 he goes to sick call and winds up a virtual prisoner of hospital bureaucracy , and even got involved in a war time romance. Things were much different then -it took over two years before he's allowed to call his girlfriend by her first name, a privilege he makes a big deal of in his diary (he underlined the entry).

Regan was very faithful about keeping his wartime diary up. Even while he was a POW he managed to keep a record for later inclusion. Interspersed throughout the diary are poems, songs, proverbs, stories and news items (including the usual "rumors and propaganda" common to military life).

After he musters out and the war ends, there's progressively less mention of personal experiences; eventually the diaries are entirely a report of the day's news from the local scene to the international. Some entries are merely headlines, while at other times he goes into some detail. Quite a number of entries concern Fenian activities, but I didn't see any mention that he was ever personally involved with them. He called it quits with the diary at the close of 1874, but he later made an additional entry on 10 Mar, 1876.

After he died in 1897, the diaries lay unknown in a trunk until the 1950s. Even after they were discovered, Regan wasn't ID'd as the author until 1998 and not much use was made of them in the meantime. Kudos to the editors for making them available.

Unfortunately, very little biographical info is given beyond a few basic stats. Don't know for sure but maybe there's just not much of a paper trail to reconstruct his life - he evidently left no survivors, I didn't see him in the pension index at Ancestry, and I'm not sure if any census entries are him.

The editors have a website which includes some excerpts along with the artwork contained in the original diaries but not reproduced for the publication. Hey, check it out.

5 out of 5 stars The Lost Civil War Diaries.......2003-10-26

I am forwarding my comments on the above title Lost Civil War Diaries. What a Find!I agree wholeheartely that they are Civil War artifacts since they go into such depth of feelings, facts during the Civil War and for a period thereafter.

I must admit I am not one that cares for poetry as it slows one down, but, once I realized how it too portrayed what was going on during that period,I began to appreciate it.

Corporal Timothy J. Regan seemed like a man of great moral character. He is someone you would want on your side in a battle or as a friend.Through the poetry I see a strong trend of references to death, love and sadness. His love of this Country and the Union cause is apparent.

I believe Menta loved him, regardless of the differences. It is sad how he lost her in the end.It is very apparent as one reads the diaries that he had a strong sense of right is right and that is it.

I found the account of John Wilkes Booth very interesting Considering what has occurred in other assassinations in our Country this revelation is quite possible

IT IS A RARE FIND AND A TRUE TREASURE!! I enjoyed reading the diaeies immensely

Sincerely yours
Wallace Daggett

As in his previous bestsellers Care of the Soul and Soul Mates, Thomas Moore wants us to think more deeply about the spiritual implications of everyday life. Which is to say that this is serious stuff--anyone looking for sexy beach reading won't find it here. What does interest the popular theologian, therapist, and former Catholic monk are the historical, philosophical, religious, and psychological aspects of sexuality that people tend not to consider. "We have a habit of talking about sex as merely physical, and yet nothing has more soul," Moore begins. If only we realized that fact, he then argues, it might relieve us of the guilt we so often feel over our own sex lives. "The problem may be that we are accustomed to imagining morality from a purely spiritual point of view as a way of limiting rather than enhancing sexuality," he continues. Yet if we paid more attention to beauty, sensuality, and pleasure, writes Moore, we might actually enhance our spirituality.

There's much more to this wide-ranging meditation, which moves from the history of the word "orgasm" to the mythic presence of Marilyn Monroe. Those willing to follow Moore's mind as it courses through these subjects will find it a fascinating journey, one that ends by stimulating their own thinking about the relationship between sex and the spirit.

          Book Description

A highly original approach from best selling author Thomas Moore, restoring sex to its rightful place in the human psyche as an experience of the soul.

In The Soul of Sex, Thomas Moore at last restores sex to its rightful place in the human psyche. Describing sex as an experience of the soul, Thomas Moore here brings out the fully human side of sex – the roles of fantasy, desire, meaning, and morality – and draws on religion, mythology art, literature, and film to show how sex is one of the most profound mysteries of life.

While finding spirituality inherent in sex, Moore also explores how spiritual values can sometimes wound our sexuality.

Blending rather than opposing spirituality and sexuality, The Soul of Sex offers a fresh, livable way of becoming more deeply sexual and loving in all areas of life.

If you liked Moore's earlier works (especially 'Soul Mates'), or you are entirely new to his writing..there is something of wisdom and insight for everyone in this magical volume. As is true of Moore's other, related books, they invite you to a smorgasboard of ideas, knowledge and observations. You can pick and choose, take or leave, as you like. Whilst some of his chapters are slightly 'academic', there are many aspects to his interpretations that have perfect relevance to, and resonance with our own, everyday experiences. 'Intimacy within intimacies'-this book is like the candle we hold to the dark window, as we wonder how we might feel less alone in this world. It is a guide only. However, worth the journey and the read. Even if, a little indulgence does certainly go a long way.

I really like Thomas Moore's books but this one was definitely not one of his best. I found it very boring and it was kinda one of those books that just made no sense at all. I found it hard to continue to read the whole book even tho I did....

5 out of 5 stars Rich Exploration of the Senses.......2000-10-12

Spiritual writers have always assumed we're trying to get to some loftier plane than this one, where there's lots of love but no sensuality. A sort of endless group hug, perhaps. Without entwining sex with its sentimental partner, love, this book examines the deeper meaning and life-affirming need behind our fascination with sex. Thomas Moore isn't the easiest writer to understand, I find I have to switch to some more lyrical level of my brain to follow him, but his elliptical style fits this subject well. And it's a hidden subject, one that vanishes if you look at it too directly. For all the joy and depth that sex brings to our lives, we treat it rather shoddily, plastering it with coyness, burying it in morality, or handing it off to biologists for dissection. The danger lies not in the concealment, for the elusiveness adds to the intrigue and mystery, but in thinking that we can separate sexuality and sensuality from the fabric of our lives.

4 out of 5 stars Sexuality is a banquet from God.......2000-06-02

In the introduction to his book, The Soul of Sex: Cultivating Life as an Act of Love, Thomas Moore writes about Sigmund Freud's principal that: "we display outrageously and obsessively that which we do not fully possess or have deeply at our disposal. If we are displaying sex with unseemly exaggeration and preoccupation, then we have not found the heart of sex and made it a fully integrated part of individual and social life." Freud's statement appealed to Moore because he can see both the irony and reality of this state of nature. That given, Moore himself can not resist the pun "...we need more sex, not less, but we need sex with soul. If we are to believe and follow in Moore's teachings we must look to Eros and find the sexuality in all things. Moore gives us great license in life through, his philosophy to live life in pursuit of the fulfillment of pleasuring our soul. The Soul of Sex will be an extremely useful tool for anyone to use in ministry. What kind of a book do you give Christians to read that is not offensive and yet will stimulate their imaginations to think creatively about such an intimate topic? Moore's book may not be for all as the subject of sex is not always for all. However, I would suggest using this book as leverage into the mindset of the audience. It has so many great archetypal patterns and examples that can be translated into lively discussion and self-examination. Can we be sexually creative and free and be moral? Can people be sexually active and good Christians? Moore believes we can and that is point. How did we as a culture become so hung up sexually? Where in the bible does it say that we must live with the burden of "puritan morality?" The book will be a resource to reassure those that are questioning their sexuality. People have many different normal feelings about sex that are completely natural. These feelings need to be listen to, fed and identified. Sometimes we need to follow our hearts and listen to our gut. Moore states that our sexuality extends outward into the world. We in America need to review our art, literature, architecture, and our fundamental beliefs and see that our spirituality and our sexuality can coexist. The road less traveled comes to mind here. That road suggests Moore should be sucked up and smelled and touched and experience to it's fullest. We are more alive and more in harmony with our creator when we not only smell the roses but enjoy the arousal within us that the fragrance sets stirring.

3 out of 5 stars A diverting hodgepodge of family recipes (some good, some mediocre) and techniques.......2007-08-20

Paul Prudhomme is a well known celebrity chef in the Louisiana cajun/creole culinary scene, as well as a prolific author. This particular book has some interesting information, but it's not one of my favorites.

                  What I liked:

                  * There's some good historical information on some old regional specialties that are slowly disappearing ... blood sausage, hog boucherie, salting/pickling/canning meat, etc. Some of this information is not particularly useful or practical for modern suburban cooks (who lack access to fresh pig blood and who have refrigerators and thus no longer need to salt/pickle/can stuff to preserve it), but it's important and interesting stuff that deserves to be preserved ... touchstones from a slowly vanishing era & sub-culture.

                  * The recipes are no-frills, stick-to-your-guts, feed a hardworking blue collar rural family type fare ... and ya gotta appreciate and respect that. Many of the recipes are well honed, and have the patina of age to them, and will always have their rightful place on the American table.

                  * There's some good instructional information that many other co-called 'cajun' cooks gloss over ... things like extensive tips of making, storing and using various types of roux, tips for cleaning (and eating) crawfish, etc.

                  What I disliked:

                  * PHOTOS: There are none ... only a small scattering of indifferently drawn B&W sketchs. Call me spoiled, but I like books with glossy photos, so that I have a general idea what finished dishes are *supposed* look like, presentation-wise. I also like photos, because it helps me 'windowshop' for recipes that I'd like to try ... that way I can see at a glance if it's something I'd be interested in, rather than having to read through a recipe at length in order to get a general feel for its style/approach/flavor. If I'm paying a premium for a hardbound book, then surely the publisher can include some work by a food photographer.

                  * COVER SHOT: Another thing that never fails to irk me is books that have photos of dishes on the cover that don't appear anywhere in the book. Case in point - this book features a photo of a whole roasted piglet on the jacket ... something I was interested in attempting for a BBQ I was planning at the time, so I bought the book. You guessed it - nadda. Zip. Zilch. Not mentioned anywhere, not even in the small print buried up front in the publisher's legaleze. Typical bait & switch 'teaser' photo, to entice readers. I wrote the publisher a ... ahem ... nice note about that goof.

                  * SCOPE & POLISH: This is just a book of some assorted family recipes - it's hardly an exhaustive treatise on cajun cooking, and recipes were duplicated faithfully rather than updated or polished in any way to achieve improved results ... the result is many recipes are lackluster and out-dated. Forget about modern appliances like food processors - this is chop/grind it all by hand cookin. Anyway, just because a given recipe documents the way grandma did it forever, doesn't mean that it's the best, tastiest, or easiest recipe ... as anyone who's serious about cooking will rapidly attest.

Anyway, it's a decent, if unspectacular and rather dated book.

Add a star if you're an old fashioned Louisana dirt farmer, age 50+, who raises pigs on/near the bayou, sans phone or electricity.

5 out of 5 stars Good food from a wonderful family!.......2006-10-18

Grew up for part of my childhood in Opalousas LA. We had a local restaurant run by this great family in one of the near-by towns. They used to test out new recipes on my mother and father, but the desserts were always tested by me! This was a wonderful and loving family, full of fun and good food. thank you Prudhommes for the wonderful childhood memories!!! I'm sad that your book is out of print.

Now for others on Amazon. This is REAL cajun food. YOu get a lot of stuff that is buffed up to be cajun because it is supposedly spicey, and contains a few ingredients such as andoille sausage. But truthfully that does not make it cajun!!! Cajun food is supposed to be a mixture of creole, french and carribean influences -- but it is not those foods just mixed up together!!!! You cannot borrow this and borrow that! Cajun food is part of a culture, one of the many diverse cultures that make up our dearest US. So if you want to learn authentic, delicious Cajun cooking, pick up the Prudhomme Family Cookbook and Paul Pruhomme's Louisiana Cooking or Tastes of Louisiana.

This cook-book (written by the whole family)is a treasure, and unforetunately it's out of print. I would highly recommend buying it used even. I must own 20-30 cook-books, and yet I always borrow this one from my mom when I want cajun food.

Great book!! Should be back in print! And you can see a bit about Paul in Bon Appetite this month as well. He and his family are a generous lot.

5 out of 5 stars The Prudhomme Family Cookbook.......2003-09-29

This spectacular Cookbook is sadly out of print. I have seen it here on Amazon.com though. Be sure to purchase your copy before they are all gone. I am a big fan of Chef Paul Prudhomme, my entire family is actually. We have all of his cookbooks. This particular book contains some of our favorites. We recommend the Jambalayas. There are several different variations. The Shrimp & Crabmeat Jambalaya is terrific. It's not a spicy Jambalaya so you might want to add some of the optional hot peppers as described in the recipe. We sure did, Wow what a difference it makes. The Fried Green Tomatoes are a wonderful tart snack or side dish. Green tomatoes can be hard to find, try your local farmers market or health food stores that sell fresh produce. These are definately worth the effort it takes to find them.

Unfortunately out-of-print, this great book contains many, many recipes from Chef Paul Prudhomme's family, along with a few from the King of Blackening himself. Meticulously detailed to ensure good results, the recipes are all failproof. Some recipes, however, serve better as conversation pieces than actual things you'd want to make. Hog's head cheese? I shudder to think. Red boudin ( made with fresh pork blood )? Eeek! All the same, the coconut cake recipe is really excellent, worth preparing your own fresh coconut for. A must for serious Cajun cooking fans.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have - It's out of print; if you can find it BUY IT.......2000-05-30

This book has changed my taste buds forever. The food is SO good! IT takes a little more work than most of today's cookbooks, but the results are worth it. If you like food, you need this book.

                  Book Description

There are hundreds of restaurants in our state that have been around for more than twenty years. Some boast lots of atmosphere and a few gimmicks, like the Big Texan Steak Ranch in Amarillo. Others are more refined and elegant, like the Green Pastures Restaurant in Austin. Many double as a community watering hole, where locals gather to drink coffee and discuss what's happening around town. The Blue Bonnet in Marble Falls fits that bill.

Large or small, fancy or plain, these restaurants share three things in common: long histories, established reputations, and loyal customers.

Author Sheryl Smith-Rodgers scoured the state to find the best of these old-time restaurants and cafes, and then collected some of their tried-and-true Texas recipes, making this an excellent gift book, recipe source, and weekend travel guide.

Sometimes writers read a book and wonder "hey, why didn't I think of that?" The idea is so good, the research looks like so much fun, and reading the finished product is just effortless. Just a few pages into Texas Old-Time Restaurants and Cafes and we were getting those familiar thoughts--what a great idea! Texas author Sheryl Smith-Rodgers has come up with a real winner here that will appeal to readers whether you're living in Texas, planning a trip to the Lone Star State, or just traveling from the comfort of your favorite armchair. Divided geographically, this guide takes a look at restaurants and cafes that been serving Texas for 20 years or longer. You'll find all types of restaurants here, from ones near major tourist areas like San Antonio's Casa Rio, located right on the beautiful River Walk, to small, out of the way places like Tomball's Goodson's Cafe and Waskom's New Waskom Cafe, which isn't new at all but dates back to 1928. Each of the restaurant entries includes a history of the cafe along with directions and nearby attractions. Many of the cafe listings also include recipes for Texas favorites ranging from chicken fried steak to pecan pie.

                    Book Description

Fountain is a character in its own play, its face worn by the years, traced by the touch of familiar hands.

On the gentle slope of a Georgia hill sits Fountain Campground. For years, it has hosted the Camp Meeting, a week-long religious revival complete with tents, food, prayer, and praise. Author Dale Wiley grew up loving this great Georgia institution, an integral part of his family's life and faith. For his entire life, he heard the old stories about Fountain Camp Meeting. But when he found a treasure trove of information on the site's past, he discovered a story much different from the one of his childhood.

Full of friendship, warmth, and love, the Fountain Campground continues to represent a rich tradition of faith. Through a compelling mixture of vivid detail and personal recollection, Wiley takes you to the present-day camp area and to the Southern kitchens that make the meeting experience so memorable. He also traces the roots of its inception nearly two hundred years ago, revealing little-known facts about Georgia's history.

Part history, part memoir, and part cookbook, There Is a Fountain: Voices and Stories of an Old-Time Southern Camp Meeting takes you deep into the heart of Southern religion.
