too mushy.......2007-01-26
It makes Peter Horry and Francis Marion to mushy. I wanted the fighting side not the staring into each others eyes and appearing to fall in love scenero.Peter Horry was not pleased with it and told the Rev. to do what he wished with it and it was printed. This could have been addedlater but for the beginning it turned me off.
It's not about poor Marion:.......2001-03-05
Poor, good and brave General Francis Marion. A true american hero. What a hack job this book is. This book is actually about General Peter Horry, who served with Marion during our American Revolution and uses poor Marion as a backdrop to blow his (Horry's) egotistic horn. Some may accept the author Weems, use of flowery language as "the style of the times," but it is no more than silly platitudes towards Marion, that quickly become offensive as one realizes the real purpose was/is to build up Horry through association with the great Marion. Horry just isn't up to the compairson. This is not a book worthy of it's proported subject.
Truly outstanding.......2000-08-19
Written in 1824, the poetic descriptions are seldom found in todays authors. Captures the spirit of the times and causes one to cheer the heroics of the brave American soldiers. The citizens of the USA today owe such a debt to those who fought for our freedom, yet, we hardly hear a word about these times. Should be required reading in schools and universities.
LIFE OF FRANCIS MARION............2000-06-30
THIS BOOK IS ONE ONE THAT MAKES THE SWAMP FOX GLOW. ITS PREFACE ALLOWS THE READER TO SEE THAT IT WAS WRITTEN BY REV. WEEMS WHO HAS A VERY ROMANTIC VIEW OF THIS FINE REVOLUTIONARY OFFICER. IN THIS BOOK THE GENERAL CAN DO NO WRONG AND IS BASICALLY FLAWLESS. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE AUTHOR STARTED THE MYTHS ABOUT WASHINGTON NEVER BEING ABLE TO TELL A LIE AND CHOPPING DOWN THE CHERRY TREE. OVERALL, IT IS A FEEL GOOD BOOK THAT MAKES ONE ROOT FOR THE CONTINENTALS. THE ONLY NEGATIVE IS THAT THE BOOKS SCOPE IS TOO BROAD, AND DRIFTS FROM THE SWAMP FOX TO OTHER PLAYERS IN THE WAR FOR INDEPENDENCE
Book Description
The year 1781 commenced under auspices more propitious than those of the last year. The British had exercised so much oppression and rapacity over all those who would not join them, and so much insolence over those who did, and were in the least suspected, that the people of South Carolina found there was no alternative but between a state of downright vassalage and warfare.

Customer Reviews:
Bogged down in chapter 3.......2004-09-11
Revolutionary War buffs will be aghast at my short attention span, but I just couldn't make it past chapter three. I think my problem was I picked up the book wanting to read about Frances Marion, The Swamp Fox. The writing just seemed stiff and was taking too long to get to Marion.
Remember watching "The Swamp Fox" on Disney and the weekly confrontation with the red coats and slipping away into the swamp?
This story follows Augustin Drummond and his adventures with the Swamp Fox during the war, but it didn't match my memories of the television series.
Book Description
Watson was terrified. He was heard to say that "he had never seen such shooting in his life." There was no effecting the passage in the face of such enemies, and stealing down to the banks of the river, on the side which they occupied, and wherever the woods afforded shelter, the British skirmished with Marion's flankers across the stream until night put an end to the conflict.
Download Description
The facts, in the life of Francis Marion, are far less generally extended in our country than his fame. The present is an attempt to supply this deficiency, and to justify, by the array of authentic particulars, the high position which has been assigned him among the master-workers in our revolutionary history. The task has been a difficult, but I trust not entirely an unsuccessful one. Our southern chronicles are meagre and unsatisfactory.

Book Description
Ralph Roberts's is not a household name in Nevada, but it should be-it was he who discovered the Carlin Belt gold deposits that created a major mining boom in the state in the last four decades of the twentieth century. But this discovery was only one episode of his remarkably eventful life. A Passion for Gold is Roberts's account of that life, a story as colorful and adventurous as that of any fictional hero.
Roberts's engagingly told autobiography traces his life from its beginnings in eastern Washington State to his fame as a world-renowned geologist, skillfully alternating personal experiences with the development of his understanding of the structure of Nevada's geology and the forces that shaped it. His fascination with ore-bearing minerals led to a long and productive career with the U.S. Geologic Survey, which took him to extended postings in Central America and later to Saudi Arabia, where he was instrumental in the redevelopment of the ancient gold mines at Mahd adh Dhahab, possibly the site of the biblical Ophir. But he returned again and again to Nevada, intrigued by its geological complexity and the precious minerals that lay hidden beneath its convoluted surfaces, and was involved in the development of a number of the state's most significant gold-mining areas.
Roberts's account conveys his abiding enthusiasm for the processes of geology, and his captivating text allows his reader to share and understand that enthusiasm. His story is that of a geologist of unusual astuteness, a man whose professional successes were only part of a life marked by devotion to family and an unremitting curiosity about the world and people around him.
Customer Reviews:
A Passion for Gold is golden.......2006-01-02
While doing due diligence on The Cortez Trend in Nevada I came across this wonderful autobiography of the geologist that reinterpreted earlier work in the Nevada basin and range and discovered the Carlin Trend gold belt, also the Battle Mountain Trend and the Cortez Trend. Nevada had been scoured by prospectors since the gold rush of 1849 and the Comstock Lode silver discovery. Virtually all surface deposits had been found and exploited. The Carlin Trend is micro-gold which does not show up when panning, it must be assayed. With the advent of heap leaching Nevada has produced in excess of 600 million ounces of gold and this will continue for quite some time with the prospective development of The Cortez Trend. Dr Roberts tells of his work in the USGS in Central America during WWII, Nevada, Utah and Saudi Arabia. He gives us his reasons for believing the Ophir mine that produced the gold of King Solomon is in Saudi Arabia. It was very interesting to read about the life of a field geologist.
This book is gold for those with any passions........2002-11-05
Excellent read with good intermix of personal and professional history. It is inspiring to read as well as educational. Thank you Dr. Roberts.
Thrusting Often Occurs During Orogeny.......2002-08-10
Ralph J. Roberts has found that a devotion to family and geology can lead to a life well lived and he relates the story of his life well in A Passion For Gold. Roberts spent 44 years with the United States Geological Survey and after retiring, became a private consultant. His most important discovery was the Carlin-type gold deposit. The reader with a non-geologic background will want access to a copy of the Glossary of Geology to help with the few technical sections included in the book [there is a glossary at the back of the book, but it is not thorough enough]. There are a few awkward sentences and some extraneous commas [I think, being the extra comma and awkward sentece king myself], but this is a suprisingly comfortable read considering that most of Mr. Roberts' earlier writings were technical papers. I trained as a mining/exploration geologist and so it was easy for me to relate to this autobiography, but non-geologists should find much of interest in Ralph Roberts' life story. It was on top of one of the mines near Battle Mountain, Nevada that Mr. Roberts writes about that I found myself deciding to abandon my masters thesis in geochemistry and to devote my life to the education of America's younger citizens [I teach earth science at the high school level]. I knew I couldn't help folks did big holes in the ground just for a little gold. I enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone with an interest in geology, but I can't give A Passion For Gold a full five stars because I think the technical sections could have been handled in a way that would have made this book a little more accessible to a wider audience.

Customer Reviews:
Just started and am astounded!.......2007-06-04
Well I've jsut started reading this book and am already astounded at the wealth of information. I have already learned details that i haven't in the other thyroid sources I've been reading. (they were good each for their own reasons though) This is the first book I've come across that seems to address T2 (something my doctor told me didn't exist!!!) as well as how other endocrine functions can really affect the thyroid. Even though I am still in tghe beginning chapters I am already so glad I bought this book!
Great book.......2007-01-08
Just a great book, very well written, easy to understand with great insights towards the functioning of the tiroids and how it affects the whole body.
No book is perfect, but this is a good one. .......2006-09-20
Really good book. Throw out every diet idea before it kills you, and soak up the advice Ann Gittleman (a recovering Pritkin - or any - "diet" fan) has to tell you. It's a great guide for women, and for anyone who wants to know some basics about good nutrition. No book is perfect, but this is a good one. Don't miss the many good reference sources she lists at the back of the book.
Best book I've read on thyroid disorders........2006-04-03
This is easily the best book I've read on thyroid disorders and I've read many. Because of this book I still have my throid and my Graves disease is in remission! Several doctors recommend I have it removed and be forever in need of synthetic hormone treatments. But this book taught me about the condition and I learned how to correct the imbalance in my life and remedy my situation. The book is easy to read and informative. The goal of the author is to help the reader comprehend the endocrine system and it's relation to the body and mind as a whole. It blends western and eastern philosophies and knowledge to help readers make informed decisions on how to live with a thyroid disorder. Exceptional, exceptional, exceptional. I am forever grateful to the author.
Excellent layout of all Thyroid disorders and treatment.......2004-09-22
This is a must have for anyone who thinks they might have thyroid problems and a must for those of you who have already been diagnosed and are still suffering, or not feeling good, like me. I recently found out I have Hashimoto's Hypothyroidism, Adrenal gland failure, and an enzyme deficeincy, all covered in this book... This is a must have before you see a doc.... -Kris Brunkhorst, Waverly, Iowa

Customer Reviews:
fantastic food.......2006-03-05
I'm a lapsed vegetarian who enjoys the beefy food my Korean friends cook--but nothing tops the recipes in Flavors of Korea. Vegetarians and meat-eaters alike will enjoy these recipes: great flavors and simple presentation in an accessible introduction to a foreign (or perhaps familiar) cuisine.
Recipes May Be Good, but There are Factual Errors in This Book.......2005-12-03
I was really turned off by the evident lack of cultural research that the author did on the subject of Korean culinary customs. It is laden with errors, which could have easily been picked up by anyone familiar with Korean cooking. Koreans generally don't have dessert. It is more of a western concept. Though sometimes fruit or a fruit drink is served after dinner, this is usually in a restaurant, not at the family dining room table.
She says that Kimchi and other side dishes can be prepared days in advance. Kimchi can be prepared weeks in advance. Kimchi has to ripen and will ripen according to how it is pickled and the environment it is pickled in. This statement made me lose credibility in her.
Also the glossary does not consistently give both the American and the Korean names of items, making it more difficult to identify the item in a Korean grocery store.
I was looking for more authentic Korean vegetarian recipes and I lost faith in my guide as I read the book. But some of the dishes I have made do taste good. So if you're not in pursuit of authenticity, this is a good alternative.
Terrific, thorough, and lots for Vegans in here too..........2005-02-10
I grew up eating my mom's wonderful Korean food, and while it is certainly healthier than the usual American fare, going completely vegetarian while eating Korean seemed difficult. Although Korean side dishes and standards like bibimbop and daenjang chige are obvious vegetarian treats, many other dishes incorporate beef, pork, or chicken, although they are not the main focus of the meal. And then, of course, the wonderful barbecued meats were certainly hard to give up after becoming vegetarian.
But the wonderful thing about this cookbook is that it has narrowed down those selections of Korean foods that are truly vegetarian, without trying to replace or substitute for the original meat dishes. There are also a lot of wonderful vegan options, and calorie and nutritional information are included at the bottom of the recipe.
Most of the recipes are quick and easy. All in all, this book is the perfect addition to a vegetarian's library. It will nicely supplement other ethnic cookbooks and contains many meals which are easily prepared in a short amount of time. Highly recommended.
The best of both worlds.......2001-07-21
I grew up eating Korean food at least half the time. When I became a vegetarian, one of the sacrifices I made was most of my Korean food. Although I was able to make some dishes (like the spinach and bean sprout salads), it was difficult to feel like I was getting a complete meal.
This cookbook allowed me to enjoy the flavors of my childhood. It's so nice to be able to flip through a Korean cookbook and know that I can cook everything in it (that's a luxury I think only vegetarians will understand!). All of the recipes I've tried so far are delicious- two thumbs way up!
Good, simple...but limited Korean food.......1999-12-22
This is a good VEGETARIAN cookbook for those who want to cook meatless Korean food, but in my opinion, it is missing many delicious and meatless Korean dishes. The receipes are simple and easy (and they offer substitutes for certain Korean foods that might be hard to buy in the US.) Overall, good stuff, but you might want to also get a general Korean cookbook for more variety. You can always leave out the meat...
