Book Description
In a world whose seasons are defined by Christmas sales and Spring Fashions, hundreds of tiny nomes live in the corners and crannies of a human-run department store. They have made their homes beneath the floorboards for generations and no longer remember -- or even believe in -- life beyond the Store walls.
Until the day a small band of nomes arrives at the Store from the Outside. Led by a young nome named Masklin, the Outsiders carry a mysterious black box (called the Thing), and they deliver devastating news: In twenty-one days, the Store will be destroyed.
Now all the nomes must learn to work together, and they must learn to think -- and to think BIG.
Part satire, part parable, and part adventure story par excellence, master storyteller Terry Pratchett's engaging trilogy traces the nomes' flight and search for safety, a search that leads them to discover their own astonishing origins and takes them beyond their wildest dreams.
Customer Reviews:
A children's book for adults.......2007-05-15
These stories have everything. Humor, imagination, satire, an exciting plot, plucky characters, adn philosophical musings. Pratchett gently makes fun of religion and pomposity, making you laugh all the way.
As good as Discworld.......2007-05-12
I say this with a caveat. Some discworld novels just are not for kids. Also, I had no idea what these books were about when I bought this anthology so if it seems strange for a 34 year old to burst out laughing at a children's novel, just forgive me.
The fact that Terry Pratchett was the author was the reason I bought this and by the second page I was in love all over again. It was like finding a new discworld, this "store." Some of the absurdities that we adults take for granted in our crass commercialized world get a good seeing to from a child's point of view.
Pratchett's wit once again has bowled me over and I would recommend this to any child or adult that I know.
Great Terry Pratchett!.......2007-03-26
This book is a great read. Very interesting writing and yet simple enough my 3rd grader could read it too!
I highly recommend it to those that love sci-fantasy with a lot of humor.
Inventive, endearing, great read-aloud. .......2006-09-26
When we finished "Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince" I read this trilogy to my 11 year old daughter. What fun! The plot is lively, the characters are endearing and Pratchett gets his point about religion across with precise use of analogy. The story drags in places, but never for long. The witty dialogue and thought provoking ideas more than make up for it. I enjoyed it at least as much as my daughter did, if not more.
Oh my Gosh!.......2006-02-09
My teacher who has over 3,000 books in her classroom reccomended this book. And I also like Terry Pratchett. bUT THIS WAS A FLAT OUT DISSAPOINTMENT. I quit after the 1st 30 pages. He was very slow in his writings. And he overloads a tad on his British sense of humor.
If you like it thats great. But it was very dull and boring for me. No offense to all 14 or some 4 or 5 star reviews. But I do reccomend Only You Can Save Mankind ( Terry Pratchet). It it's a great book about a computer game with connections to aliens. I also reccomend any book by Cornelia Funke. Inkheart and The Theif Lord are my personal favorites. And 2 of my most favorite series are A Series of Unfortunate Events and Harry Potter. Reading Rocks. Get off the computer and read a book!
Book Description
Gina "Gold Digger" Diggers, her adopted were-cheetah sister Brittany, and their friends Genn the Rakshasa and Seance the mage travel to Antarctica to investigate an ancient alien city-ship, unaware it's already been commandeered by cosmic canine villain Dog Supreme! Then, on a trip to Ireland, they have to escape from heavily armed leprechauns, only to run into well-intentioned werewolves. They find out that the infamous and immortal werewolf Brendan, who betrayed both his own clan and the were-cheetahs, has been freed from his prison, and Brittany's number one on his vengeance list!
Book Description
Gina "Gold Digger" Diggers is still on the go all over the world and beyond in search of old treasure and new knowledge. She briefly loses a valuable artifact to Ryan Tabbot, a cute (but self-centered) competitor, in Istanbul, but trails him soon enough to an ancient underground spaceport in Egypt. Ryan then joins her, arch-rival Penny, and friend/transport man Ace on a trip to the Bermuda Triangle, where an anomaly leads them into chronospace and onto the trail of a time-traveling genius dog and his pet boy. But if they don't bring this mutt mastermind to heel, he'll change history to ensure a future where Caninekind rules over Man!

Gold Digger Pocket Manga Volume 9.......2004-08-28
Volume 9 collects the following issues from the black and white (original) Gold Digger series:
Issue 36. The Chains of Aebra
Issue 37. "Form Blazing Shillelagh!"
Issue 38. A Fatal Flaw
Issue 39. Death of a Prince
Issue 40. A Bride's Tail.
Follow were-cheetah Britanny "Cheetah" Diggers, her sisters, and friends on her quest to reunite with Cheetah's fiance, the Kryn Prince Stryp'Gia "Stripe." Together will they be able to save him and his homeworld or is the wedding off for good?
Although this volume is a complete story arc, starting just after the Time Warp arc ends, I recommend starting from the beginning with Gold Digger Pocket Manga Volume 1. However, even if you get this volume first, you'll love the series so much you'll have to have them all.
Bonus material:
Volume 9 has unique cover art. The covers for the 5 issues that are contained within are depicted on the Contents page in black and white (one page has all 5 covers). There is a Main Character overview page featuring brief bios of all three Diggers sisters and Stripe. There is a The Story So Far... summary page and Next page giving a brief preview of what is to come in Volume 10.
Features that make buying the Pocket Manga better than buying the Gold Brick Volume II trade paper back that contains these issues and more:
Thicker Manga quality paper stock.
Page numbers and a table of contents with the names of the issues contained within.
No flipped pages, eye lashes on the proof pages, or blurred pages.
This time Fred Perry's beautiful art and inspired storytelling get the star treatment they deserve in this collection.
The only possible complaint I have is that the covers of the originals don't get a full page in this book, which also leaves out an easy to see break between issues. But that is not really a big enough deal to hold anyone back from buying this well-done compliation.

Book Description
When sixteen-year-old coal digger Andy Stewart decides on his first day at work that there must be better and safer ways of extracting coal from the earth, he sets about learning and developing technology to do so. But his lifelong friend and neighbor, Nick Rakos, takes a different route, through unionization, and they become enemies. Both make marriages of convenience, but learn to love their wives with great passion. Caught up in the turmoil of the changes in the coalfields in the middle of the twentieth century, Andy reaches a high-level management position, while Nick becomes an efficient union organizer. After two decades of personal and professional antagonism, they cement their friendship again when they are hopelessly trapped in a mine cave-in. Based on real-life experiences, this is the story of coal camp people, their lives, their fears, their triumphs, their loves, their hates, and, yes, even their deaths.

Book Description
From the award-winning author of Children of the Dustbowl comes a sobering look at two of the most frequently romanticized events in American history. For the native peoples of California, the period from 1769, when the first Spanish Mission was founded, to the 1850s, when the Gold Rush was at its height, was one of terrible violence and destruction. First, Spanish priests and soldiers sought to convert the Indians to Christianity and a "civilized" way of life. Yet for the Indians the story of the missions was one of hunger, disease, rebellion, and death. Then, during the Gold Rush, Indians were frequently kidnapped, murdered, and sold into slavery by white settlers. By the end of the nineteenth century, the surviving California Indians had been forced onto reservations and their way of life had been largely destroyed. With maps, a timeline, and glossaries on California's Indian tribes and mission history, Jerry Stanley tells the story of modern California from the poignant perspective of the Native American.
Customer Reviews:
Should be mandatory for CA grade school kids studying the Mission era.......2006-08-18
I bought this book for my daughter's 4th grade class to supplement and challenge the standardized 'pablum' on the politically correct view of CA mission history. You'd be suprised how diffuclt it was to find an alternative history book with this perspective for grade schoolers. It's not perfect. We cherry picked relevant chapters.
It's about time more revisionist books for this time period and and grade level get published.
Carefully researched, thoroughly absorbing work.......1998-04-08
Jerry Stanley has written another carefully researched, thoroughly absorbing work, this time concerning the fate of the California Indians, who had to contend with both the Mission Settlement and the Gold Rush. Opening with a description of their lifestyle and culture before the impact of the white man, the book is not only an invaluable resource for the student, but also a compelling read for anyone wishing more information about this sorry time in American history.
Digger is a definitive work on California Missions........1998-03-26
Jerry Stanley has written a much needed book on the California Missions and the effect they had on the lives the Native Americans of California. Stanley conducts first-rate research and carefully documents his work. A "must read" book.
book means well but falls short.......1998-02-16
It's past time somebody wrote a definitive study of the massacre of the California Indians but this is not it. The author means well but does not know his subject, and especially slights the perspective of today's native California peoples.

In Jamba Juice Power Jamba Juice founder Kirk Perron shares dozens of his easy-to-prepare smoothie recipes (a blender is the only equipment required), his nutrition advice (developed with a team of scientists and physicians), and his twenty-one-day lifestyle-changing plan with daily tips for mind, body, and spirit and a relevant smoothie recipe. Jamba Juice Power is filled with Jambaisms-"Do unto your body as you would have it do unto you" (Jambaism #3), health fast-fact sidebars, illustrations, and testimonials, all delivered with the hip, irreverent attitude that has made Jamba Juice a phenomenon.
Customer Reviews:
Regaining part of my youth. Refreshingly WOW.......2007-01-11
Wish we had a jamba Juice store nearby, I'd visit it often. Would like some more information about the vita ingrediants in the book. Never knew Peanut Butter, Mango, Banana, Peaches, Orange Sorbet and crushed ice could taste so good
.
Disappointed even after reading other reviews.......2005-02-23
I had read earlier reviews about the book being more of a "life style" book than a recipe book (there really are only about 40 smoothie recipes), but my biggest disappointment was that ALL of the recipes include either sherbet or frozen yogurt. For me a real smoothie is all fruit.
Different than I was expecting - but a wonderful book!.......2005-01-23
I honestly picked this one up because I just wanted some good smoothie recipes. I wasn't expecting to get a comprehensive 21 day life changing health plan or a brief history of Jamba Juice. I might not have bought it if I had known that was what more than half the book contained.
Good thing I didn't know that because I think the book was well worth the price. There are great recipes in it like I was hoping. Also, the lifestyle advice and the 21 day plan are all very practical and doable and simply focus on getting more produce & fiber in your life and exercising more. Much more sound "diet" advice than everything else out there right now.
A good read and a fun recipe book that is motivating!
A Tasty Read.......2004-03-29
I absolutely looved this book, I have purchased several copies for friends and family. It is full of easy-to-read important health info (not usually my favorite reading subject) and practical tips for staying (or getting) healthy, becoming energized, and de-stressing! The recipes are simple and delicious, with a wide variety of flavors; with a family of five, this was especially helpful. I have been able to sneak my children?s vitamin and mineral supplements into their morning smoothies (a tip I had read in an article written by Dr. Oz regarding his own children). I hope to read more work by these authors in the future, until then I intend to keep my family Jamba Juicing at home- Thanks!
Best book I've read in a long time. A must for all........2004-03-27
Jamba Juice Power is a must read. I am forty years old and the last program I tried was Dr. Phil's, to no avail. This book changed everything. I learned that well being is not just physical but emotional and spiritual also. The recipes were realistic and my family loved them. The authors touched on many great tips that perhaps we all know are correct, just hard to put into practice. This was also made easy to digest by a 21 day program that was easy to follow. (Not a bunch of prepacked food to buy, meetings to attend and money to spend). After I write this review I plan to write the publisher and give a thank you for a book that every person should read.

Book Description
Celebrated as much for their exceptional taste as their vibrant health benefits, these versatile gifts from the sea have now made their way into nearly every supermarket in the country. But while high-quality fish is easy to find, many cooks are baffled by its preparation. Simply Shrimp, Salmon, and (Fish) Steaks reveals how easy it can be to turn the catch of the day into a flavorful, satisfying, and healthful meal.
Leslie Glover Pendleton begins with helpful hints for selecting the very best fish and shellfish, and goes on to offer a delicious range of dishes that can be made using America's favorite seafood: shrimp, salmon, swordfish, halibut, and tuna. Pendleton builds on familiar ingredients and simple techniqus (no filleting or scaling here), but the results are such spectacular creations as Orange-Glazed Shrimp with Gingered Cucumber Salsa, Roasted Swordfish Cuban-style, and Crisp Salmon on Lentils with Fried Onions. Most of these incredibly tasty dishes can be made in less than thirty minutes, making it easier than ever to add fish to your culinary repertoire. Pendleton completes Simply Shrimp with more than thirty appealing accompaniments to the fish to create a full meal. Each and every recipe is flawlessly written, giving even the most inexperienced cooks confidence to prepare perfect seafood and side dishes with minimal time and effort.
So rejoice, because the bounty of the sea can now become the bounty of your table. Cooking fish at home has never been easier -- or more delicious.
Customer Reviews:
Delicious and Different.......2001-02-10
I love cookbooks, and try a lot of recipes. The recipes in this book are wonderful. They're easy, varied, and use a wide selection of produce, which is important to my family. We eat no meat but fish, and no dairy. I often get dismayed that so many cookbooks base recipe after recipe on these "forbidden" ingredients, but few of the dishes in this book rely on dairy; those that include some cheese are perfectly delicious without it, such as the Salmon Cobb Salad.
Ms. Pendleton has created many dishes which are healthy and out of the ordinary. She has a real flair for giving meals an ethnic flare, for instance Asian or Mediterranean, yet they are unique, not cliched. And they are not elaborate or difficult, yet have a very gourmet result, especially for how easy they are.
This is a very different cookbook; you will not find it redundant to your collection, even if you have dozens of other cookbooks. I highly recommend it, especially if you're trying to eat healthy. You will not have a boring diet with this book to give you ideas!
A sea food lovers delight.......2000-06-07
I am always looking for good, simple to prepare fish recipes. Simply Shrimp, Salmon, and (Fish) Steaks, fits the bill perfectly. The text is well written, the recipes are easy to follow, and the menu suggestions helpful. A creative use of ingredients gives these recipes distinct flavor. Dinner guests have been pleased with the results so far. I particularly enjoyed the salmon baked with apricots and water chestnuts and the swordfish (I used halibut instead) with onions, raisins, and pine nuts. I will eat a lot more fish because of this fine book.
Customer Reviews:
Thorough Coverage of an Important Food.......2004-03-14
This is one of the easiest types of cookbooks to review, as it is largely a matter of determining whether the author has covered all the bases you can think of and whether the quality of the information on a quite limited range of information is up to snuff. As people who write these one-topic books are usually experts on that particular field, the likelihood that the book will be of a high quality is very good.
James Peterson does not disappoint us in this book all about the various methods for cooking salmon. Peterson is a culinary writer of the first water to begin with, having written many award-winning books already, including a book on fish and shellfish.
Since Peterson has already covered salmon in his seafood book, one can wonder what else there is to say. It turns out there is very much else to say.
One of the most valuable parts of the book appears before we even start thinking about cooking. Peterson describes all of the commercially available species of salmon you may find in your fish market, the relative price of these species, depending on whether they are farm raised or caught from the wild. This is important because there is a very big difference in price between the least and most expensive, and the difference in price is not fully returned in difference in value.
Another chapter in the book gives detailed instructions on how to both cold and hot smoke salmon. This is a doubly section in that I suspect the same techniques could be used for most types of finfish. Be warned, however, that unless, like Alton Brown in his popular Good Eats episode `Junkyard Chef', you are exceptionally handy, cold smoking can be rather expensive and messy.
Peterson is always an engaging writer, as his opinions and personal tastes often come through in his writing. One may object to this if these opinions are unfair or needlessly critical of other writers, but they are not. They simply leaven the discussion and make his work more fun to read. One example is that while he claims to have covered virtually every method of cooking salmon, he does leave out steaming, as this is simply too boring to deal with. I will not miss this discussion.
The presentation of techniques he does cover is very, very thorough. In dealing with poaching, he covers techniques and special equipment needed for poaching a complete fish as well as salmon steaks and salmon fillets. He is especially careful to warn the reader about overcooking while poaching. The anomaly with poaching is that if the poaching liquid is heated to a boil, the fish will actually be too dry when removed from the liquid for service. The treatment of sautéing, grilling, curing, roasting and baking, broiling, and other methods, including serving raw as with sushi and carpaccio are equally thorough.
The book includes sources for special materials required for smoking, as well as good sources for spices and the like.
This book is doubly important with the recent findings on the food value of salmon. The book was published before the recent concerns with farm raised salmon, but it does give intelligent information on what kinds of salmon are available farm raised and what species are available caught wild.
My only complaint about the book may be that Peterson describes how to create a medallion from a steak, but provides no pictures of the technique, even though he has published pictures of this technique in other books. He does not even refer one to these other volumes.
Highly recommended. Better than his book on duck cooking.
-.......2003-06-08
It goes without saying that this man is a pioneer of his craft, however there are throngs of contemporary chefs who are doing things with food that show that they know their ingredients better than Peterson does- good cooking is a result of knowing your ingredients and knowing them well. Peterson claims that there is little, if any, difference between Wild, farm-raised, and Atlantic salmon. This is preposterous! The difference is oceanic. Perhaps Peterson has never eaten Wild King Alaskan salmon or Copper River Sockeye salmon or anything from the Yukon River, which is a real pity, because one of our lifetime's greatest foodies is missing out on the greatest culinary experience of all time! Save you money and spend it on Peterson's Fish & Shellfish. Even the salmon recipes are better.
An aphrodisiac for passionate salmon lovers!.......2002-10-15
Salmon is my favorite fish, so I borrowed this book from the library, but I'm buying it now! Mouthwatering recipies with lots of good pictures, lots of information about different kinds of salmon and different ways to cook it, how can you go wrong? The recipes are so interesting I read them out loud to my sister, a chef! He covers the basics like grilling and and sauteing, but also gets into smoking, curing, roasting, making lox & even making salmon ravioli. Each recipe is described in detail by an author who obviously has made each dish and loves every one! Try sauteed salmon with Thai-style coconut broth, salmon "saltimbocca" (wrapping the salmon in prosciutto), or one of the many salsas he includes to go with grilled salmon.
The author teaches at the French Culinary Institute, after running a restaurant in New York City, and he obviously knows and loves this fish! Altogether an excellent introduction with lots of scope for more experienced cooks too!
