    Book Description

Terry de la Mesa Allen’s mother was the daughter of a Spanish officer, and his father was a career U.S. Army officer. Despite this impressive martial heritage, success in the military seemed unlikely for Allen as he failed out of West Point—twice—ultimately gaining his commission through Catholic University’s R.O.T.C. program. In World War I, the young officer commanded an infantry battalion and distinguished himself as a fearless combat leader, personally leading patrols into no-man’s-land.

In 1940, with another world war looming, newly appointed army chief of staff Gen. George C. Marshall reached down through the ranks and, ahead of almost a thousand more senior colonels, promoted Patton, Eisenhower, Allen, and other younger officers to brigadier general.

For Operation Torch, the invasion of North Africa, Allen, now a two-star general, commanded the Big Red One, the First Infantry Division, spearheading the American attack against the Nazis. Despite a stellar combat record, however, Major General Allen found himself in hot water with the big brass. Allen and his troops had become notorious for their lack of discipline off the battlefield. When Seventh Army commander George Patton was pressed by his deputy Omar Bradley to replace “Terrible Terry” before the invasion of Sicily, he demurred, favoring Allen’s success in combat. At the end of the Sicily campaign, with Allen’s protector Patton out of the way (relieved for slapping a soldier), Omar Bradley fired Allen and sent him packing back to the States, seemingly in terminal disgrace.

Once again, however, George Marshall reached down and in October 1944, Terrible Terry was given command of another infantry division, the 104th Timberwolves and took it into heavy combat in Belgium. Hard fighting continued as Allen’s division spearheaded the U.S. First Army’s advance across Germany. On 26 April 1945, Terrible Terry Allen’s hard-charging Timberwolves became the first American outfit to link up with the Soviet Union’s Red Army.

Terrible Terry Allen was one of the most remarkable American soldiers of World War II or any war. Hard bitten, profane, and combative, Allen disdained the “book,” but he knew how to wage war. He was a master of strategy, tactics, weaponry, and, most importantly, soldiers in combat.

Prior to Hubble, the universe was known to consist solely of the stars in the Milky Way and believed to be relatively stable in size. But because of Hubble's discoveries, we now know that the universe consists of an unimaginably large number of galaxies (containing Carl Sagan's beloved "billions and billions . . ." of stars) and that this unimaginably large universe is continually expanding. In this first serious biography of Hubble, Christianson deals both with the enormous importance of these discoveries and, paradoxically, the apparent unimaginably small-spirited and petty nature of the man himself. Highly Recommended.

    Book Description

In 1923 Edwin Hubble confirmed the existence of other galaxies. By the
end of the decade, he proved that the universe is expanding, thus laying
the very cornerstone of the big bang theory. A revealing portrait of a
scientific genius at work, this book also offers an incisive narrative
of the history of astronomy, and an evocation of what we see when gazing
    at the stars.

"Displays remarkable strength in its steadfast balance and scrupulous
honesty. The greatness of the discoveries is set off against the

For my physics class I was required to read a biography on any scientist I wanted...and I choose to read about Edwin Hubble.

Before reading this book I had little knowledge of this great astronomer. While reading this book, I was generally impressed of the author's intense knowledge of Hubble's entire life. I soon found out his entire family social status, his early childhood, his success in high school and college sports as well as his interest in school and greatly respected work. His Rhodes Scholarship introduced him to a field of law which pleased his father but resumed his early childhood interest, once his father passed away. The rest is history....His system of classification (which is still used today) put Hubble on an International status but it doesn't end there. His studies of the Nebulae Red Shifts proved very useful and his data proved that the galaxy his greater than the Milky Way and later, was a key piece of information in the Big Bang Theory. Hubble's famous law V=Hd was so groundbreaking, that Einstein himself changed his General Relativity Equations to accommodate Hubble's law.

Edwin Hubble, by Gale E. Christianson, is an extremely well written and well organized biography. However if a reader was not deeply interested into Hubble and his life work, he/she may find the book a little on boring side. Not to say Hubble did not live an eventful life, but I personally do not find astronomy deeply interesting.

3 out of 5 stars Thoughts On the Book.......2005-04-03

Gale Christianson's biography on Edwin Hubble is the story of possibly the greatest astronomer of our time. The book includes interesting nuances about Hubble's life as well as all of his discoveries in his work. It was obvious that the author had a great amount of respect for Hubble's discoveries as well as a lot of fascination over his life. The book is extremely informative, sharing all of the details of Hubble's life as well as those of the people important to Hubble. The book is quite recommendable both as a biography, and also as an astronomy book. It teaches a significant amount on the basic terms and ideas of astronomy as well as touching on some of the more advanced concepts. The book is a wonderful account of the life of a great astronomer and the history of astronomy.

4 out of 5 stars A compelling, engaging book that you won't put down........2002-06-13

If you ever wondered why the Hubble Telescope is called the Hubble Telescope, I have a book that has the answer for you. In an age where all you have to do to have a highway or bridge or named after you is get elected to some minor office (the "Eric Winkler Parkway" ???) and where all you have to do to be referred to as a "genius" is guide an NFL team to a winning record ("Tampa sure has turned around since Smith arrived to handle the coaching chores haven't they Dandy? Yes Frank, they sure have, Coach Smith is a genius"), it is sobering to meet true genius -- warts and all.

When I was in high school, I studied nothing but sciences - with a particular emphasis on Physics and Astronomy - As a child I dreamed of being an astronomer - I built my own telescope. But then fate intervened and I ended up studying English literature and becoming a music lawyer. But later in life, in my early forties, I returned to my first love via a series of general interest science books. One of those books was "Edwin Hubble, Mariner of the Nebulae".

This compelling, lovely book was written by Gale Christianson, the author of an equally engaging portrait of Isaac Newton. Christianson is a Professor of History and writes with a down to earth, straightforward style. He writes for the general reader and does not presume that you are grounded in science or astronomy. So do not fear - dragons be not here.

Hubble is easily one of the most important figures to have graced the 20th century - or for that matter all of history. If you think that is an overstatement, then factor this into your thinking. This one man is responsible, virtually single-handedly, for several of the most important discoveries of all time. It was with reference to a discovery of Hubble's that the famous Harlow Shapley remarked, "here is the [discovery] that has destroyed my universe".

    1. It was Hubble who confirmed the existence of other nebulae, what are now called galaxies, outside of the "Milky Way". This seems trite now, but it was not at ALL obvious at the time. Having discovered a Cepheid variable in Andromeda he was able to measure the distance to that body of stars -- the results of his calculation (using the period/luminosity relationship (discovered by Henrietta Leavitt in 1912) that makes Cepheids the standard candles of the universe) proved beyond a doubt that Andromeda was much farther away athan any star in the Milky Way.

    2. It was Hubble who proved that the universe was expanding (and worked out the famous "Hubble Constant")- an insight of incalculable significance that laid the cornerstone for the Big Bang theory.

    3. It was Hubble who developed the system of classification for galaxies that is used to this day.

    4. It was Hubble who brought forward evidence that the universe is homogenous - i.e., the same in all directions.

Incredibly, he never won the Nobel Prize - he died before they got around to recognising him.

But this is only part of the story. For Hubble was probably one of the most unlikeable men of all time. He was arrogant, unkind, a publicity hound, revoltingly condescending and patronising, and at times even dishonest. A considerable portion of the book is devoted to exploring his extraordinary "reinvention of himself". A polite way of saying that he made up stories about his past life to enhance his reputation - for example he claimed to have practised law.

Shinning out of the pages of this book, like one of his Cepheid Variables, is the story of his truly extraordinary wife Grace who put up with everything and was constant and faithful to a fault.

I guarantee that you will not be able to put this book down. You will be by turns elated, repulsed, amazed, disappointed, astounded and saddened. I very nearly wept during the achingly touching Epilogue. It is one of those special books that you will return to more than once.

    5 out of 5 stars A worthy biography of a complex subject..........2001-12-03

One of the most remarkable astronomers of all time, and the one who generally gets the credit for the biggest revolution since Copernicus: Hubble was the one who recognized that the universe is expanding, and who first articulated the principle that bears his name, that of the expansion constant, the "Hubble" constant.

This outstanding work does a good job of tracing his early years, a task made difficult by the fact that his wife destroyed many of his personal papers after his death. Hubble was enigmatic, aloof, and possibly disingenuous. He shed his Missouri roots and donned the polished exterior of a Brit. He was a shameless anglophile to the end of his life.

He had a knack for asking the right questions at the right time, and being a talented enough observer to get the data needed to address those questions. (...)

Christianson's work is an honest treatment of a difficult and complex subject. She doesn't gloss over the rough spots or try to sugar coat his scientific accomplishments. This is thoroughly researched and well written work.

4 out of 5 stars Good, readable and intersting biography of Edwin Hubble.......2000-04-22

I believe the biography presents a complete and balanced account of the life of Edwin Hubble. The account covers his early years, family, education, military service, and his notable scientific career. The account of his education was interesting, especially his time at Oxford, England. Hubble's brief military career was covered, and his use of the image of "Major Hubble" afterwards tells much of his character. His scientific career, his work and professional controversies were covered in detail. If I were to be critical, I feel Hubble's early life received too much attention, I would prefer to have seen his scientic career covered in more detail. I brief, an interesting book, it almost makes me feel that I've met the man.

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully easy recipes, invaluable information.......2007-06-06

The layout and title of this book gives the strong impression of a guidebook, yet quite a cast of recipes lies within. In fact, the latter half of the book is all cookbook, with over 100 recipes. I was elated to find that each recipe was free of dairy, eggs, fish, gluten, peanuts, shellfish, soy, tree nuts, wheat, and yeast. How refreshing to find a book that actually lives up to its title / subtitle. It was so nice to not have to sort through which recipes were "safe" and which weren't, the whole book was a go!

As for the first half of the cookbook, it seems to be a culmination of food allergy knowledge from among the three well known authors, Vesanto Melina (MS, RD), Dina Aronson (MS, RD), and Jo Stepaniak (MSEd). I have read and perused more than a few food allergy books, and this is certainly one of the best. The authors touch on the required material, such as explaining food allergies / sensitivities and food allergy testing, but they then move on to cover new ground that is seldom discussed in the surface world of food allergies.

Though the book reads fairly well, some sections do get bogged down in biology and other details. Some sub-chapter listings would be helpful to make this a true reference book. Each chapter is truly dense with information, and per standard, the index is a bit too muddled with keywords to serve as a quick and easy guide.

I have already trialed several of the recipes, including the Chickpea Pizza, a Mediterranean style flat bread, the Beannaise, a soy-free, dairy-free mayonnaise alternative, and the Hot Fudge Sauce (pretty self explanatory). All worked out but the sauce, which I will retry. I have been very pleased with the ease of the recipes, spending less than 30 minutes on each, even when preparing them for the first time! Not to mention, aside from an inexpensive bag of chickpea flour (easier to find than I thought), I haven't had to purchase any out of the ordinary ingredients. It should be noted that all of the recipes are also vegetarian / vegan.

              5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-03-15

I recently found out I had a gluten allergy and had been desperately looking for recipes for old favorites (breads, muffins, cookies, scones etc...) when I stumbled on this book. I hurriedly got it at Politics and Prose in Washington D.C. and went directly to the grocery store to procure all the new ingredients I will need to eat gluten-free. I made the Sunny Seed Bread as soon as I got home (with the book's recipe for all purpose allergen-free flour). It is AMAZING! Not only the best bread I've ever made (gluten breads included, and i've tried MANY) but one of the best breads I've ever tasted. ANYONE would love this bread, and there is no giving leniencies because it's "gluten-free" - no one could ever tell. Not to mention gluten-free, but the book really does cater to all allergies - corn, yeast, egg, nuts, dairy ETC ETC ETC. How can these recipes be so delicious when they are free of so much? It's a true phenomenon and PHENOMENAL book. I knew that if Jo Stepaniak was working on the recipes, they would be outstanding. She definetly delivers, as she always does. Another author I knew to trust was Vesanto Melina, from the wonderful "Becoming Vegan" book. I am thoroughly impressed and CAN'T WAIT to try all the other recipes - ultra fudgy brownies, berbere (ethiopian) spice mix, graham masala, muffins (with so many varieties possible), scones, etc. Although I mention a lot of sweets (i have a sweet tooth) the book has MUCH MORE than sweets; all kinds of vegetable and bean recipes, savory crepes, spreads, dressings, savory baked goods, etc. etc. etc. I am SURE that all of these recipes will be delicious, tried and true by the dependable Jo.
As well as delicious recipes, the book contains a ton of information on all the common (and even some less common) food allergies. This information is incredibly interesting and useful; the authors are a lot more thorough than one might expect from a book with so many delicious recipes. A feature I particularly appreciated: For each allergy there is a table with all the foods that definetly contain the allergen and a table with all the foods that possibly contain the allergen. I especially enjoyed a section where new foods are introduced. These foods, like buckwheat, amaranth, miso, quinoa to name a few are not new to the world, and the brief histories and tidbits explain this and much more.
Overall, it's a wonderful book. It's clear the authors put a lot of time and TLC into creating this marvelous book. I can't praise it highly enough. I'm so glad I bought it. For the size and length of the book, especially for it's quality, helpfulness and enjoyability, you're definetly your money's worth and much, much more. Thank you SO much Jo, Vesanto and Dina.

4 out of 5 stars comprehensive and easy to follow.......2007-01-11

Very thorough and readable guide to alternative foods if you suffer from common food allergies. The author didn't just give the usual alternatives but made suggestions for a varied, interesting and tasty diet! Good if you like trying new things and have the time to make the recipes (some can take a while).

5 out of 5 stars Food Allergy help.......2007-01-10

This book is wonderful! I bought one for myself and one for a friend. She has some food allergies even worse than mine. We are both using it! It doesn't just cover the question,"what if I eat the wrong foods?", but it also covers the "how to not eat the wrong food and still feel like you've eaten something". I'm very glad I got it.

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic, resourceful guide - Vegan Cookbook.......2006-04-30

This book is very helpful, especially if you are newly diagnosed with food allergies. Or, if you want to dive into the depths of analysis of food allergies and many related issues (ie Asthma). It covers all the A-Z's, including label-reading and hidden allergies, along with cross-contamination risks. A good starter "guide."

However, if you are looking for a cookbook, unless you are a Vegan, you probably want to seek an alternative, as 100% of the 100 recipes are Vegan.

3 out of 5 stars Great food, but accurate?.......2007-05-08

              I've had this book forever.
I cooked out of it for years and then in my last move, lost the book. I came across it again recently. With me being on weight watchers, the nutritional information is really handy....or is it? I have found several of the recipies to be way under the actual calories and fat.

It's still a really awesome little book, but if you are concerned about the nutritional information, you may want to double check the values.

5 out of 5 stars My new favorite cookbook!.......2006-12-10

After searching long and hard for a quick and healthy cookbook, I purchased this one. This pillsbury cookbook is just what it states; "fast and healthy". However, it is so much more! First of all I love all the pictures. As a somewhat inexperienced cook, I really like to know how something is going to look before I make it. Once I discovered how delicious and easy the recipes were, I ventured into making the non-pictured recipes as well. And to my delight, they turned out great!
Another thing that I like about this book is that each recipe doesn't have a million ingredients listed nor are the ingredients weird or difficult to find in the stores. I have found almost everything I needed in Walmart Supercenter which is where I do the majority of my shopping.
Finally, this book is different from other "healthy" cookbooks out there in that the recipes are not only healthy, but they have some actual "taste" to them as well. Sometimes I forget that I'm actually eating a low-fat meal!
I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to keep their diet under control but does not want to spend all day in the kitchen slaving over the stove!

              5 out of 5 stars Fast, Healthy, Delicious...and You'll Shed a Few Pounds Too!.......2003-07-24

I have owned this book for several months now but not until recently have I taken it out and actually used some of the recipes. Well actually, I have taken up Weight Watchers again and I was looking for some recipes that wouldn't remind me that I was dieting. I just finished a Garden-Fresh Tuna Salad Sandwich (4 points) that was just packed with flavor with just a scant 3 grams of fat. The photograph of the sandwich is what caught my eye and that is one of the big selling points of this and other Pillsbury cookbooks.

The book begins with a comprehensive discussion called, 'A Guide to Healthier Eating'. Here you will find information about the soon to be amended Food Pyramid and just what is meant by a 'serving'. The authors then give the reader the 'Seven Steps to a Healthy Diet' which include suggestions for improving your food intake. Additionally, there is a glossary of health and food-related terms, some suggestions for using the nutritional information included in the book and some suggested menus combining some of the recipes.

Like many cookbooks, Fast and Healthy covers the culinary experience from Appetizers to Desserts. Aside from the many beautiful photos, the book is replete with many sidebars. These give the user tips that will enhance not only the recipe, but the expertise of the cook as well. Nutritional information for each recipe is provided and dietary exchanges for diabetics are also included. Weight Watchers clients like myself can easily calculate the Winning Points from the information provided and most of the recipes will fall into weight loss plans. For the chocolate lover, who can resist Cocoa Mocha Brownies or Double Chocolate Chip Cookies....two and one point respectively???

As you can tell, I like this book. I am a big fan of Pillsbury's cookbooks and this one is going to be a good friend over the next three months...and well beyond!

1 out of 5 stars NO LOW FAT COOKING FOR ME!!.......2003-04-05

Why do you keep inserting low fat and diet books into my lifestyles and favorites???? That's a real no-no for a fat man who enjoys his food and is happy being fat!

5 out of 5 stars an excellent investment!.......2006-12-12

I bought this book when I got married in an effort to help my husband and I support a more healthy lifestyle (ok, we wanted to lose some weight!). This book has by far exceeded my expectations--i use it at least three to four times a week!
              the highlights:
-meals that truly can be prepared quickly
-"normal" ingredients that I can find at a regular grocery store and won't sit in my fridge for months after using them once
-truly tasty recipes that rarely taste "lowfat"
-a wide variety of recipes with a multitude of flavors and tastes that suit both the adventureous eater or a more conservative palate.
-directions that are easy to follow with helpful information sidebars. Even you 'non-cooks' out there can use this book!
-It lists nutrition info with each recipe, so you know exactly how many calories and how much fat you're taking in with each dish.

The book is divided into sections for each type of food (ie chicken, fish, breads, etc), and it has a pretty good index in the back so it is easy to find things.
The only thing I would do different is that the entrees don't list suggestions for sides, which would be helpful for those of us who don't have an intuition for that sort of thing.
A book that does do this is "Make it in Minutes", a book by weight watchers that is my second favorite cookbook. Ignore the WW thing, and pick this book up too. It has some great recipes as well!

5 out of 5 stars Great Cookbook, Easy to Use.......2006-11-01

I was very satisfied with this cookbook that I saw in a bookstore but got on Amazon for half the price.

So far I have made 3 of the recipes (the ratatouille stew, tuna sandwiches, and salmon with leeks) and they have all been delicious. They were also easy to make and the ingredients were not hard to find or expensive.

The recipes are healthy while still having lots of flavor, so your family will likely enjoy them.

The only thing I might object to would be the use of some artificial or highly processed ingredients (like canned salmon or some prepackaged foods), but these wouldn't be hard to replace. It just might require a little extra time, but if you prefer to eat natural/organic foods, these recipes could be easily modified.

I would definitely recommend this cookbook.

5 out of 5 stars EASY AND YUMMY.......2006-05-12

This cookbook has it all! Normal recipes, easy to follow large print, beautiful glossy pictures and pages, and nutrional information. It tells you to use yogurts etc instead of sour cream and healthier versions of cooking. It has general calorie information for foods, and general cooking tips and suggestions for things you can throw into the recipe if you have leftovers. Something I have never seen before. It has tips on how to spot good produce and the right cuts of meats. I can never seem to find recipes in other books I have bought that I would actually use, but I have used this book several times. I have made the meatloaf several times, and everytime my family loves it. I like it because it tells you that you can use breadcrumbs or smashed crackers as I stated above, it gives options in the recipe, with tips above the recipe. Most cookbooks don't do that. I would reccommend this to a beginner or a parent that doesn't want to spend a lot of time in the kitchen after a long day at work, like me.

              5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Cookbook!!!!.......2006-02-08

I have only had this cookbook for a week but I have used it every night for dinner. The recipes are delicious and so easy to make. I have been searching for a low fat, fast, and easy cookbook that included nutritional information for a long time! I love that it tells you ALL the nutritional info, not just calories. The pictures seem to be a true representation of what you end up cooking. My husband and my 3 year old have been very pleased with the past several dinners. I'm happy because most of the recipes take less than 30 minutes to prepare. I know I will enjoy this cookbook for a very long time. It is a must have!!!

              5 out of 5 stars Excellent Cookbook.......2005-08-23

When I first bought this book I didn't utilize it as much as I should have. Now that I have become more driven to eat healthier but don't want to spend much time in the kitchen I find this book to be extremely useful. It's full of big full color pages of the finished product, easy recipe instructions, and even comes with a section in the beginning explaining the food pyramid and portion sizes. I thought with the name "Pillsbury" it would call for some of it's own products like those "grands" rolls and other fattening products they sell but I haven't seen that anywhere in the cookbook. Just healthy foods that you probably have onhand or at least should already have in your fridge and pantry. All in all I'm finding it to be a wonderful resource in the kitchen. My husband even recently looked through it and thought he ought to be able to cook up some things from this book since they looked simple enough.
