The destructive nature of confiscatory taxation.

A Masterpiece on the Political Economy.......2002-07-26
Taxation and Confiscation is yet another great Freeman Classic for your political economy bookshelf. It features a selection of essays by various luminaries addressing various facets of economic issues surrounding taxation, government fiscal policy, deficit spending and the regulatory state. Among the distinguished contributors are: economist Hanns F. Sennholz; historian Clarence Carson; political writer and theologian Gary North. Carson offers a witty tract on how the "power to tax is the power to destroy." North tackles the issue of school vouchers. Robert Higgs and John Hood offer two insightful essays that elaborate why the culmination of public sector growth (federal, state and local) has long outstripped real economic growth and is putting a burdensome strain on the nation's economic health. Eric Brodin tackles the myth of the Swedish Welfare State and the "third way between capitalism and socialism" myth. Other essays deal with issues such as confiscatory taxation caused by 'double taxation', tax equity, the middle-class tax-squeeze and how various public policies have stifled capital formation. It is a must for the free-market apologist. Though, if you don't already own any books from the Foundation from Economic Education than I recommend you at least get the book 'Cliches of Politics' first.

This is the inaugural volume in an annual showcase of new talent, complimenting our annual flagship anthology. They are presented here in a deluxe package to introduce them to new fans of illustrated fiction.
Book Description
The annual comics anthology of emerging cartoonists
The Drawn & Quaterly Showcase new talent series stands out among other anthologies on the shelf, as it is the only anthology to have the focused editorial vision of D+Q editor in chief Chris Oliveros, who is responsible for launching the careers of Adrian Tomine, Seth, Julie Doucet, and more. Five years ago, Oliveros was impressed by the talent and vitality of the new generation of cartoonists. Each volume has been lauded for its short stories, and by selecting the best cartoonists
every year, Oliveros gives each artist more than twenty-five pages in the Showcase to spotlight their storytelling and artistic abilities. The D+Q Showcase is where you find tomorrow’s critically acclaimed graphic novelists today.
Book Four features three North American cartoonists: Dan Zettwoch (The Ghost of Dragon Canoe) of St. Louis, Gabrielle Bell (When I’m Old) of Brooklyn, and Martin Cendreda (Dang!) of Los Angeles. Zettwoch and Bell have both contributed to the award-winning anthology Kramer’s Ergot. Cendreda is a frequent contributor to Giant Robot magazine.

A Prize Whether You Call It Visual Literature, Sequential Art, or Comics.......2007-01-13
Drawn and Quarterly presents three, deftly told stories that have nothing more in common than a shared medium. All are stimulating in their own way.
The first is by Gabrielle Belle, a subtle tale featuring Anna, an art student who deals with criticism for her life drawings, and Felix, the 12-year-old boy she tutors. In small ways, the two grow closer as the comic progresses, but Anna becomes unexpectedly drawn to Felix's father. It's a deceptively gentle story with complex emotion underlying many panels. I've read through it at least twice, discovering something new and revealing about the characters each time.
While Belle goes for the heart, Martin Cendreda goes for the nerves in "Dog Days" where the comic wanders across the lives of a number of characters at the end of summer, including children, dogs, and a man trying to sell his TV. Marlon is a soon-to-be high school graduate and, along with the rest of the town, is speculating on a string of recent murders. Marlon's grandfather, however, insists that the crimes are being committed by an aswang, a vampire-dog common to the Phillipines. The monster's alleged presence dominates the story, as apparent as humidity.
"Won't Be Licked! The Great '37 Flood in Louisville" by Dan Zettwoch is a refined and realistic piece of history. It follows a young man's adventures through a flood with the use of his boat, constructed from a refrigerator box. The comic's attention to detail is staggering, documenting the flood's effect on a variety of people literally trying to stay afloat. Monuments are submerged and buildings are trashed, each site documented wonderfully.

A Must Have.......2002-03-03
If you're a Drawn & Quarterly fan, then you already have this.
If you're not a Drawn & Quarterly fan, then you have never read this or any of their publications. Yes, they are that good. And this is one of D&Q's best efforts (also see Best of Drawn & Quarterly).
magnificent talent, beautiful package.......2001-12-11
(regarding volume three.)
another great release from D&Q. thick luxurious pages, mat-finish cover, signature binding. so don't you worry about that.
"the shepherd," pennti otsamo (helsinki--??): three-color short story in the typical d&q vein of twentysomethings struggling to understand life. but it's good.
"monsieur jean," dupuy/berberian (france): 55 pages, the centerpiece of the collection. it's a very well-executed romantic comedy (with a little detour into art history). someone else colored it, which makes the colors a little removed from the art. but the story is great and the cartooning is great. And it's very funny. Great characterization.
"the pillow" and "a senseless story," franco matticchio (italy): *beautiful* B&W linework telling two stories -- silly and nonsensical, respectively.
"safety instructions," jason little (usa). i love jason little. this is a very funny story laid out like an airline safety card, but the story is about two teenagers on a plane while it's crashing. funny and refreshingly lowbrow.
"dostoyevsky comics," r. sikoryak (usa). Sikoryak continues his series of crossing classic books with comics, this time combining "crime and punishment" with 40's "batman." hilarious, as always. printed on special rough paper, very nice.
"fist to fist," hincker blutch (france): b&w. "an early history of heavyweight boxers" -- funny and informative, of the larry gonick school of nonfiction comics. gorgeous inkwork.
"fourteen sketches: selected drawings from the late 20th century," seth (usa). full-color, hand colored. just some great pictures of people and places in the U.S. from his recently released sketchbook, "vernacular drawings." seth is wonderful. it's in a classic "New Yorker" style.
"the peasant and the snake," mark lang (montreal). gorgeous two-color adaptation of a Chassidic folk tale.
"the other one," harry mayerovitch (canada). two pages of drawings from his 1973 book, "the other one." funny little "new yorker" style cartoons with people and their shadows.
"paul, apprentice typographer," michael rabagliati (montreal). classic "clear line" two-color style (there's a spumco reference in one panel, and it's not out of place) telling a story of a boy growing up in montreal. calm kind of story.
"gasoline alley," frank king. a sampling of his classic sunday pages, reprinted for the first time. beautiful classic comic art. of course, they're reprinted about half size from the original huge pages, but that's a complaint i have with every classic comic reprint collection.
the covers and inside covers might be the best part. they're by Chris Ware in homage to Frank King, with a story about Frank King in the inside back cover. It's beautiful, really.

Book Description
D+Q presents the latest anthology of new comics talent from around the world.
D+Q publisher Chris Oliveros started the company by publishing a quarterly magazine of the world’s best comics talent, which over the years became an award-winning deluxe coffee-table anthology that featured cartoon classics of yesteryear, such as Gasoline Alley, and today’s French comics superstars Dupuy & Berberian. Fourteen years later, Oliveros noticed an explosion of new talent from around the globe, so he decided to combine two of the things he does best—publishing anthologies and nurturing talent. The result is the Drawn & Quarterly Showcase, which is one of the most exciting outlets for readers to find new comics talent.
Book Three features three cartoonists from around the world: Genevieve Castrée from Canada, Matt Broersma from England, and Sammy Harkham from the United States, whose previous graphic novella, Poor Sailor, was excerpted in the David Eggers–edited Best American Nonrequired Reading 2004.

Good work.......2007-01-06
I enjoyed Sammy Harkham's work but the rest were a joy to find. Pretty much anything from Drawn and Quarterly you have a certain expectation level, but this book was beyond what I expected.
Book Description
The Annual Celebration of the Hippest & Best in the Popular Cartoon Arts.
Now in its 13th year, this multiple award winning series returns in another deluxe full-color coffee-table edition. D+Q presents a mix of cartooning, illustration and art and graphic deisgn. Another wry, sophisticated story from New Yorker favorites Dupuy & Berberian join a spectacular retrospective of the work of French-Canadian Albert Chartier. Chartier brought a European style to his witty strips about life in mid-century Quebec and one can trace his legacy in the new story from D+Q fave Michel Rabagliati. Wuthering Heights gets the classic EC horror comic treatment from postmodern trickster R. Sikoryak, and Harry Mayerovitch turns his funny, classy pen to the subject of death and dying. Features an introduction from writer, scholar and critic Alberto Manguel, best-selling author of A History of Reading and Reading Pictures: A History of Love and Hate.
Book Description
Drawn & Quarterly Showcase returns featuring two more of the brightest new talents working in graphic novels today. This edition focuses on new stories by two cartoonists from opposite ends of the globe: Chicago's Jeffrey Brown and from the other side of the Atlantic, Pentti Otsamo of Finland. Brown's story is a tense-murder-mystery: a co-worker at a factory has dreams about dogs attacking a girl two nights in a row. The next day he unloads a truck and finds dirty clothing in the trailer, clothing that looks like a young girls'. As it happens, a young girl was abducted and murdered the night before, and the truck had picked up the load in that area the same day. Brown deftly paces the story, drawn in his expressive line, never quite revealing more than we need to know. Pentti Otsamo writes about a boy's move to a new town and of the nastiness of the local kids who do their best to shun the new arrival. Otsamo's moody and atmospheric drawing style is perfectly suited to the subject of the story. His artwork is reminiscent of some of the best D+Q cartoonists, with the warm colors of Seth and the sensitive, yet expressive linework of Chester Brown.

Disappointing.......2000-07-03
I LOVE Wallace and Gromit but found this book to be just too fluffy. It wasn't droll enough and definitely not substansive. Perhaps I was hoping for too much?
It's like a W & G video come to life!!!.......1998-01-03
Wallace and Gromit (Cheese Lovers's Yearbook) will keep you abreast of the two's life and lifestyles. You will be exposed to behind the scenes activities that one would not normally find in their videos. You will definitely feel a part of Aardman Animations as you will come to know Wallace and Gromit like close neighbors.
